In-Between Spaces: An Exploratory Case Study of Parking Lots as Urban Void Spaces and the Integration of Interactive Interventions as Revitalization Strategy

Situated along the busy streets of Quirino and Regalado Highway, the SM City Fairview parking lot is the location of a revitalization project and toolkit application in this undergraduate thesis. Urban voids, or urban lost spaces, are naturally occurring, under-utilized spaces in the urban fabric that has been neglected or purposely abandoned. One of the most overlooked lost spaces are parking lots, especially during the night. These are considered as non-place spaces, an originally functional area that is devoid of social interaction. This massive occupation of land becomes more prominent during the night, where the illumination of artificial light exposes the obsolete state of parking lots.

The study focuses on revitalizing parking lots as a multiuse space both during the day and night, taking advantage of opportunities that the emerging nocturnal urbanism provides.

Through adaptive reuse, along with temporal and interactive architecture, the proposed areas could be transformed into a placemaking and multi-functional space while retaining its original function. Creating a sustainable design during the day and transforming the parking lot into a community hub during the night helps in promoting social interaction, along with enhanced economic and societal gain, as well as reduce the environmental impacts of parking lots.

This study won the “Best Thesis for Landscape Architecture” award in the 2024 CAFA In-House Research Colloquium.

SITE DEVELOPMENT PLAN

IN-BETWEEN SPACES:

01 Undergraduate Thesis

Designed as a changing and flexible landscape, the area have two site development plan, which shows peak hours and when the ladscape would transform into a placemaking area. Parts of the parking lot were changed during certain time of the day to give way to the night markets and food courts, as well as the installation of multi-level automated car paking to provided more space for development.

Below is the layout of the landscape during peak hours , where there are more cars.

At the side is also the section-elevation of some parts of the landcape, and personally rendered in Adobe Photoshop.

The rendering of the plate is done through Lumion, and in a different style than what would be seen throughout this portfolio. It is to show flexibility and an experiment during that time.

A key factor of the study and the design of is the integration of interactive elements within the landscape. These could be digital or kinetic, and shown within these spreads are some of the construction details of the elements installed throughout the landscape.

One is a pull-out table located at parking spaces, which would be closed during the night, and the tables could be pulled easily for convenience. Another are the benches inspired by the already existing “surf bench” by KALD, which is a n interactive bench that moves depending on the user’s movement.

ABANG

(Collaboration)

02 Valenzuela Botanical Park

This is a group project for a landscape design plate on my 1st semester during my third year in university. The concept that was chosen for the botanical park was “Varillas De La Ezperanza”, a Spanish term coined by Manuela Ribaderneira in connection to her art exhibit held in 2013. The terms originated in her homeland Ecuador, in which a lot of houses have unfinished floors with protruding columns intended for construction. The landscape is then designed for people to experience. The intended landscape would utilize design principles of hierarchy, sequence, and emphasis, creating a space that is compelling to its users. “Ka abang-abang”, as Filipinos would say.

Site Development Plan

This shows the design process I follow through out all these selected project. After the site analysis, the design process would then proceed to a bubble diagram. This process helps me identify key points of the design, as well as adjusment and how the whole landscape would flow.

CENTENNIAL SQUARE

03 Bulacan State University

This is a group project that is designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bulacan State University. The area would be the center of outdoor activity and are off limits to any vehicle. The chosen design concept is a “Mobius Strip” to represent unity, infinity and repetition. This was done in my second year of university. As a group collaboration, this project was done with assigned works and proper communication was needed to ensure that the landscape architects’ ideas were aligned

(Collaboration)

Aside from design and construction drawings detailing, I also did all the 3-d modelling and rendering of this plate. The programs used are SketchUp and Enscape.

KAMESTISUHAN DISTRICT

04 Master Plan

(Collaboration)

Rendered personally in Photoshop, this is a collaborative project done in large groups. We were tasked to create a master plan for a historically significant street in Malolos, Bulacan.

05 9-HOLE GOLF COURSE LAYOUT PLAN

(Collaboration)

A group project that was done as a requirement for landscape design elective: golf course architecture. We were tasked to create a layout plan for a 9-hole golf course. I personally did the rendering using Adobe Photoshop.

06 OTHER WORKS:

Roof Deck Therapeutic Garden (Collaboration)

Located at a hospital in Baguio City. A 2- floor roof deck area connected to the cancer center of the hospital. The task is to design an area that would serve as a therapeutic/healing garden for patients of the cancer center.

06 OTHER WORKS:

Pedestrian/ Commuter Park

(Collaboration)

Another group project, Pedestrian/Commuter Park is a park for pedestrians and commuters coming from Fort Bonifacio and Villamor Air Base going towards the train station & Jeepney stop (and vice versa) located along the East Service Road about 40 meters from the site. The concept of the design is Oasis, as the site would serve as a temporary paradise to commuters in the hot weather. The design follows the traditional meaning of Oasis in an island, with open spaces and relaxing palms.

06 OTHER WORKS:

Manual Rendering

Shown within the next pages are manual renderings compiled throughout my university days. From rough sketches to fully rendered with colored pencil, watercolor and markers, these man ual renders shows snippets of what I’ve learn throughout the four-year course of landscape architecture.

A residential project rendered during my 1st year in university.

Rendering of the Baguio Roof Deck Therapeutic Garden as reference for the design.

A quick 15-minute sketch of a street in Sweden, 2nd year in university.

Illustrated for a plan palette project .

AFRICAN LILY

Agapanthus africanus

A quick perspective render of a redesigned Punta Cruz Watch Tower National Historical Monument that was built in 1796 as part of the town’s defense against Moro Pirates. It was constructed in a rare triangular configuration on the first level and hexagonal on the second level. It survived throughout many years even after World War 2 when the Japanese burned the whole town of Maribojoc in Bohol. This was during my second year of college.

A rendering of guard house of the redesign parking lot of the Hotel Sofitel Manila, as part of a group project during second year of university.

Water color , gouache, and colored pencil renderings of plants from a plat palette project done in my 2nd year.

07 UNILAB

INDUSTRIAL PARK

Another collaboration project in which I chose the concept, namely the “Rod of Asclepius”. This concept was chosen to compliment the site of the project. One of the logos of UNILAB is the Rod of Asclepius, where a serpent or a snake coiled around a wooden rod. The Rod of Asclepius is the God of Medicine’s symbol, the rod formally representing medicine and the snake representing rebirth and renewal.

BUBBLE DIAGRAM

The project would utilize the shape of the Rod of Asclepius, the curve of the snakes and the lines of the rod. The snake and its curves would take prominence in the form, creating a pattern that symbolizes rebirth and rejuvenation, just like how a snake shed it’s skin, and to represent the important work done by the workers in UNILAB.

FORM COMPOSITION

PRELIMINARY DESIGN

UNILAB also believes that a “culture of care starts from within”, the landscape architects would like to reflect this culture to the design of the park. The design of the landscape, with its winding path and greenery, would offer comfort and healing to the workers of the company. It would be a place of renewal, a place to relax and find comfort, to heal mentally and relieve stress and tiredness, even for just a little while.
