WORDS: Richard Williamson
While the headline act at Donington is leviathan-proportioned truck racing, the Mini Se7ens are undeniably the premier pint-sized performers. And along the straights and around the swoops of Donington Park, expect nothing but full-blown, tyresliding action from the perky 1-litre machines. Not forgetting the more powerful 1.3-litre Mini Miglias that put many saloon car racers to shame, racegoers will be mesmerised by the sheer speed and grip of these slick-shod mini Touring Cars. Pit & Paddock Sitting atop the points after eight of the 14 rounds is thrice former champion Paul Spark, who has used all his experience to be in the right place come flag fall to tot up the big points, including a pair of wins at Castle Combe and Snetterton. In second lies Jabez Dyer, who has shown good consistency by finishing all of the races to date, with a couple of podiums thrown in, while in third, and also a former champion, Max Hunter would be higher but for an off at Brands in the last round, but arguably scored the victory of the season at Rockingham in round 6 when he sprinted from last on the grid to lead within a lap! He also won round 3 at Snetterton. Ashley Davies in fourth overall has learnt how to win in the past couple of seasons but is still awaiting his first in 2015, while in fifth and sixth we have the top

two from 2014, runner-up Darren Thomas getting this season back on track after a few mechanical woes with a fine brace of wins at the Brands Hatch Mini Festival last month, to add to his season opener at Combe in April. He also won at Donington in 2014. Meanwhile reigning champion Andrew Deviny has caught the inconsistency bug, with a solitary victory, four seconds but three DNFs, including a crash at Brands last time out. Behind these top six, expect Kieren McDonald, Graeme Davis (a winner here too last season) and Ross Billison to be around the top positions, with Lewis Selby and Nathan Burge coming into form as well. Ian Deviny still holds a clear lead in the milder-tuned S-Class in the absence of reigning class champ’ Shaun Tarlton, but the experienced Jim Burrows could make inroads.

On
MINI MIGLIA (+ INVITATION) current form, 2015 looks like being the year for Kane Astin in his bid to finally win The Peter Collins Trophy for Mini Miglia, having been runner-up on several occasions. Five wins (at Combe and double-headers at Rockingham and Brands) plus three further podiums have elevated him into a 32-point lead over reigning champion Rupert Deeth, and the latter is no slouch with a pair of victories himself, at Combe also and at Snetterton. The remaining victory (also at Snetterton) has gone to Mark Cowan who currently lies seventh in the title race after a couple of lowly finishes, while filling out the top half-dozen are Sam Summerhayes in third overall from Dave Drew, Dan Wheeler Quick Links
and Aaron Smith. The former has yet to register a top spot but has impressed in only his second full season, while the other three have all been victorious in the past, Wheeler a double winner here last season in the car now driven by Cowan. Experience is very much a byword in the Miglia ranks, with Colin Peacock, Niven Burge, Mark Sims and Rob Howard totalling many seasons and Mini racing laps between them, although the latter faces a race against time to repair his car after a hefty roll at Brands at the end of June. Also welcomed to join the grids are Invitation Class Minis which, although not running to Challenge specification or for points, are eligible for their own race-within-a-race trophy.

Chairman’s Chat
F
irst of all, apologies for the lack of a contribution in the last newsletter… a newsletter that has come up to all expectations. I hope that you all agree with me, that a ‘big thank you’ is due to Craig and love:mini........ thanks Craig. Please make sure you carry the love:mini decals, along with the other Club sponsors decals, on your cars. As I write this, we are only a few days away from our fifth gathering of the year, namely Donington Park. I have to say what a great turnout you all put on at the Brands Hatch Mini Festival...... the cars looked fantastic and what with the Club awning, merchandise and the Graeme Davis staging with the grid girls, along with the excellent grid sizes, this made the whole event a winner. As for the BBQ.... great food and yet again this raised a considerable sum of money. Thanks to all who make this happen. Of course the excellent racing also ‘helped’! It was a pity to see some really nasty accidents ~ Rob Howard and Andrew Deviny to name just two. Thankfully they got out uninjured from their cars. Let’s all hope they will be with us as soon as possible. Since my last Chairman’s Chat, we have held two Technical SubCommittee meetings {Snetterton and Rockingham} with various items being clarified via excellent Technical bulletins from Richard Williamson. The whole point of these meetings is to discuss and clarify anything that is of concern to those present........ dry decking, Mini 7 wheels are two such topics. The meetings are held when we think there is something to discuss that needs clarifying in the current regulations. I think these meetings have been very successful and I would like to thank all of those who have

volunteered their time. On a personal note, I attended the British GT Championship round at Spa Francorchamps {July 11th} to watch my Grandson race. This circuit has changed dramatically since I was last there approx 14 years ago. I hardly recognised the place......... amazingly, it didn’t rain the whole weekend!! On the Saturday afternoon {after the British GT race}, the 25 hour VW Fun cup started....... it was ‘gob-smacking’ to see 105 cars, yes 105 cars on the grid. One of these cars was being driven by our very own C o C Steve Burns. The car came 2nd in their class .... well done Steve. The meeting brought back some ‘lovely’ memories of the Club visits to Spa.......... especially the drive into the town with the race cars.......... lots of drinking and then driving back to the circuit!!!! Surely not I hear you say. Finally on two issues that are concerning to the Committee and the Club as a whole........ the first is the disturbing news that cars are being tampered with in the paddock. Several situations have been reported following Brands Hatch. This is not only dangerous to the drivers of the cars affected, but totally not in the spirit of our Club. THIS MUST STOP! Secondly, tyres are in very short supply........ there is nothing that we can do about this. Dunlop is aware of our concerns and is speeding up the process as much as they can. Can I ask all of you to bring any tyres that you have to Donington to help out those who might need help. See you at Donington

UPDATE: Zandvoort
T
he Mini7 Club is delighted to be able to confirm that the planned event at Zandvoort, to be held over the weekend of October 3-4. On the Saturday, there will be a free practice session and qualifying. On Sunday, there will be two 20 minute races. As an invited club, any racing member of the Mini 7 Racing Club will be eligible to enter for free (there is no entry fee) to this non championship event, which is open to Sevens, Miglias and Invitation Class Minis. The provisional timetable is attached. There is no testing currently available on the Friday. In terms of car and driver safety, we have confirmation that we can race to MSA standards, and to this end, our regular scrutineer Steve Prior will be in attendance to ensure that MSA safety standards are applied. On noise, this is a quiet meeting, but based on tests that Steve Prior conducted at Snetterton, he is confident that all cars will be compliant to the regulation which is 93 dB(A) with the Miglias potentially closer than the Sevens. Note, the noise is measured with the measurement system of the Dutch government, with a noise listening device placed 25 metres from the racing line. We are looking to finalise a ferry discount offer, this will be communicated later, however I don’t want to raise any hopes that this will be cracking! In terms of accommodation, because Zandvoort is a tourist town, there are many bed and breakfast possibilities. Please check www.booklidays.nl, www.airbnb.nl and www.booking.com. According to my records, I have noted interest in supporting this event from the following drivers, if you are on this list but should not be, let Colin know, if you want to participate but are not on the list, please write to Colin at colinmpeacock@ hotmail.co.uk

OULTON PARK MINI FESTIVAL
M
SV are predicting this one day only event to be as popular, maybe even more popular than their Southern event with Mini fans and clubs. Due to its popularity, please get your entries in early to Colin Peacock at colinmpeacock@hotmail.co.uk and let’s again deliver amazing races and hopefully put over 50 cars on the grid (we had 49 at Brands Hatch) so please, let’s everyone get the cars out for this big festival.

ad news reached us recently of the passing of Roger Colson. Roger was an early Formula Mini-7 racer during the late-60s, but of more significance was that he prepared both the 1968 Formula Mini-7 and inaugural 1970 championshipwinning Miglia Minis of Mick Osborne. Both drivers ran highly visual dayglo green or reddishorange cars under the Mayfield Garage banner, and Roger’s preparation skills were recognised by BMC’s Special Tuning department at the 1970 London Motor Show, with the title-winning Miglia the central feature on their stand.

MINI SE7EN: RACE 2 nd 8 gets underway with a very wet and slippery track after it held off all weekend for a downpour just before the race, giving two green flag laps before the start. Andrew Deviny and Darren Thomas run side-by-side off the line into Paddock Hill Bend but Deviny runs wide and Max Hunter takes advantage moving up a place as does Paul Spark. Now the front two have a good second lead over third place Spark who runs wide with Deviny on the wet surface. Ashely Davies and Graeme Davis are handle to handle down the Cooper Straight battling hard for 5th place. Quick Links
Daniel Budd unfortunately returns to the pits to retire. Deviny loses control coming down Paddock Hill sliding wide over the rumble strips but looks to regain control only to slide the opposite direction and run over the grass and head on heavily into the tyre wall, bonnet popping clean off and ending his race but otherwise unharmed. Thomas makes a move and overtakes Hunter just in time before the yellow flags come out after the crash and the safety car comes out on track for 3 laps. On restart Hunter, Thomas and Spark group together followed by Davies and Davis. Spark runs wide off track but manages to keep going but in doing so drops five places.

Donington Park 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago laps, and once pole position man Peter Baldwin had dropped out, Chris Lewis was able to open up a 2.85s gap to the flag, including a new fastest lap, from Stewart Drake and Bill Sollis, with Myk Cable, Steve Young and Paul Brend filling the top spots. Familiar names among the 39-car entry around the Mini racing scene today also included Ian Curley, Andy Hack, Bob Humphreys and Phil Harvey. The BARC ran the 21/22 October meeting, the secondof-six Winter series rounds. Such was the competitiveness of the combined entry that a 10-lap qualifying race was held first thing on the Sunday morning, and which saw Mike Jackson (pole+fl), Mike Jordan and Phil Harvey the best of the Miglias, with Mark Sims getting the better of James Hayman in the Se7ens, and Paul Frankcom in third. Nick Maylor had started from class pole and been fastest on track until going off after contact. In the afternoon’s 12-lap final, poleman Peter Baldwin held off a racelong challenge from Steve Young and Wayne Grayer to bolster his Winter Miglia titlewinning score. Meanwhile, a lap down on the overall leaders, Dave Braggins also led from class pole, and was top Se7en in 12th overall ahead of Steve Bell and Matt Hayman. Dave Banwell set the fastest class lap.

pair of 30 Years BlowmocanAgo sponsored races on 4 August highlighted round nine-of-15 in the National Mini Challenges, a meeting hosted by the BMRMC (British Motor Racing Marshals Club). Both formulae had healthy 25-car entries, and in the 850cc Se7ens it was pole sitter Chris Tyrrell who recovered from a poor opening lap to race back up the top order and cross the line after 10 laps with a healthy 6.9s gap. Colin Rodger got closest in the ex-Chris Gould multi-title winning car, with champion-elect Russell Grady in third from Paul Brooks, Mike Jackson and Ron Phillips. Current day paddock faces around back then also included Ralph Budd, Graham Penn and Graeme Davis. In the 1000cc Miglias, title runner-up Dave Carvell (pole) put one over on defending champion Mike Fry (fastest lap), the pair of them relegating Chris Lewis into third after a good scrap. John Bailey, Gerald Dale and Bev Comber were the best of the rest.
