With the opening championship rounds abandoned last month, the Mini Seven Racing Club circus thus kicks off its 50th Anniversary season on the circuit where it all began half a century ago. A pair of races on the full Grand Prix track mixes both Se7ens and Miglias in what should be an action-packed weekend! company for Issigonis’ iconic small saloon. And what an entry it is too, with seemingly every registered driver keen to have a run out on the majestic GP layout, last tried by the M7RC 13 years ago. Last season’s runner-up, Gloucestershire’s Darren Thomas looks a firm favourite after his double victory here last season on the Indy circuit, with young Welsh hotshoe Ashley Davies a winner here too in 2014. Reigning champ Paul Spark is a potential late entry if he’s managed to replace the

now sold title-winning car, while other former title winners include Andrew Deviny, Max Hunter and Tina Cooper. There are a crop of novices too, all deciding that Mini Se7en is the ideal beginner’s category, with several plumping for the budget-tuned 1275cc S-Class, which itself is marking its 10th anniversary and has undergone a revamp over the winter too - look out for the green windscreen headers and door squares with race numbers in the #700s. Should be a belter!

Heading the list is current champion Kane Astin, also a former Se7en titleist, but he will face strong opposition from the likes of 2014 champ Rupert Deeth, and former Saxo racer Shayne Deegan in the successful Baldwin Motorsport machine, the latter carrying the ‘golden’ #50 on his car. Other previous winners in the slick-tyred, twin-choke 1.3-litre category include Dan Wheeler, Tony Le May and Colin Peacock. Either way, expect close-quarter action throughout, especially when the leaders come up to lap the slower Se7ens around the 2.433-mile track. Finally, look out for the Owens Motorsport/SBM entry of Rob Howard, as one lucky raffle winner could be racing for the team at the Brands Mini Festival in July for just £20! Mini Se7en News new merchandise range for 2016

T

he Mini 7 Racing Club is pleased to announce a new licencing arrangement. Joining other famous motor sport brands, Dunlop and Honda, the club has teamed up with Dread to create a new, exciting range of merchandising from baseball caps to waterproof track side suits. Alongside the items featuring the contemporary club logo, there are also some alternative products celebrating the original club logo. The plan is to keep the range fresh by adding new products and deleting the less popular items as we go forward. Mike and Alan will carry a few of the items at the circuits, but for the broadest range we would encourage you to think about placing all your orders from the website. Thanks to this arrangement, we can now look forward to a smarter, more Mini 7 branded, paddock in 2016. Finally, a big thank you to Dan Wheeler for his support for the club in launching this new range. Please take a look in the next few days, the range is now available to browse and purchase online. http://www.dread.cc/shop/category/mini_7/

It will be a multi-class event and the organisers are looking for around five to six cars across our three formulae. There is no entry fee to consider at this stage, and there may be flexibility to accept more than five to six if it proves popular. Please email Colin on colinmpeacock@hotmail.co.uk if you want to participate. At this stage we need firm commitments only please, not ‘maybes’. https://coventrymotofest.com

A delve into the M7RC Archive helps us to recap what happened over the decades at Brands Hatch around this time of year.

T

here were two 2006 10 Years National Challenge Ago visits to Brands, round 2 of 12 coming on 30 April. In the Mini Se7en race, reigning champion Paul Thompson started as he meant to go on by securing pole position, and then fought off a number of rivals before the red flag was flown and the result counted back to 8 laps. In second, Andrew Deviny had been within 0.662s at the time and had set a new lap record, with Damon Astin, Geoff Letts, Max Hunter and Paul Clark holding the top spots. Both Niven Burge and Kane Astin were deemed not to be running when the red flag was shown, so dropped to the DNF list, while others still racing today included Dick Hunter, Graeme Davis, Paul Spark, leading novice and S-Class Tristen Knight, Anthony Towey, James Coulson, Darren Thomas, Malcolm Keat and Red flag stoppage involved Niv Burge Photo: M7RC Archive (Pitlane)

The restart went the full 10 laps, and Andy Hack came through to take victory by a scant 0.140s after terrific scrap with James Hall (new fastest lap), champion-elect Bill Sollis and poleman Kelly Rogers, with the unrelated Tim and Mark Sims completing the top half dozen. Further back Tony Le May took 10th and Phil Harvey’s S-Class 14th.

he M7RC’s first visit of the year to Brands was at the BRSCC’s ‘Eurocar Extravaganza’ on 12 May, for rounds 3 of 12 for the National Challenges on the Indy circuit. In the opening 10-lapper for 1-litre Mini Se7ens, Dave Braggins took advantage when poleman Matt Hayman retired to the pitlane on the parade lap with a duff plug. However he was made to work for his narrow 0.31s victory, with Tim Sims setting fastest lap in second and champion to be Phil Manser in third right on his tail. and Steven Hopper further back among the maximum 30-car grid. Top novice on the day was Steve Puddiphatt. The 1.3-litre Miglias also had a full grid of 30, and Stewart Drake gave intention of his title-winning season with an impressive display from pole position to beat Bill Sollis (fastest lap), Peter Baldwin and Richard Wager, with Mike Jackson and Wayne Grayer in the top six. Of note further down the order were Miglia champs of future and past, Ians Gunn and Curley and Myk Cable, with the likes of Bob Humphreys, Gerald Dale and Phil Harvey still around the M7RC paddock today. Leading novice on this occasion was Daniel Eady.

However, the first of two National rounds (4 of 18) for Mini 850 (nee Se7en) was on 25 April and organised by the Rochester MC. A 24-car entry vied for 20 grid spaces on the 1.2036mile circuit, and after 10 laps Chris Tyrrell held sway by the margin of just 1976 40 Years 0.2s from season Ago champ Graham Wenham (pole position) with Graham ‘Gramps’ Woskett in third. In fourth, future F3 racer Terry Pudwell set the fastest lap ahead of Julian Cutler and Hugo Shipley, and only one car retired. The BRSCC were in charge of the ‘Allied Polymers Race Day’ on 2 May, the first of three National Mini 1000 (nee Miglia) events at Brands, round 4 of 18. With

This was narrowly won by Paul Perera from Peter Morris and Colin Beckwith after polesitter Kevin Johnston dropped out. Harmer’s special saloon was credited with fastest lap, but unofficially it is thought that the FM-7 lap record of 1:07.6 (66.04 mph) was set by Roy Bourne in a second Trident entry, that is before he suffered a monumental off at Clearways in which he narrowly avoided serious injury when an advertising pole smashed through the windscreen!
