After a year’s hiatus, the Lincolnshire venue returns to the M7RC calendar and it offers a perfect setting for the thrills and spills of Mini racing. With undulating hills and tight, twisty sections, expect close, first-class action to celebrate the Club’s 50th Anniversary. Ashley Davies from Wales went home with a double helping of top points, with ex-champion Max Hunter hot on his heels in both races. Spencer Wanstall and extriple champion Andrew Deviny took a third place apiece, while seasoned campaigner Graeme Davis lies third in the points thanks to consistent fourth place finishes in both. Runner-up for the past two seasons, Darren Thomas lies a bit further back in the standings after a dnf in the opener, while others to run up among the

leaders included Gareth Hunt and Charlie Budd. In the revamped S-Class for budget-tuned 1275cc cars, 2014 class champion Shaun Tarlton also scored a double victory to hold a clear lead from former triple class champ’ Julian Affleck, and Josh Collins, the latter also one of a crop of new novice racers. Last time here in 2014, Deviny scored a double victory ahead of Thomas and Davis in both races, but this time around he may find it much harder. Bring it on!

MINI MIGLIA (& INVITATION) seasons ago, Cadwell proved to be the turning point in Rupert Deeth’s season, scoring his maiden Miglia victory just before mid-point in the calendar, which later helped him to the title by just two points. This time Deeth comes to Lincolnshire level on points with reigning champion Kane Astin, the Cambridgeshire pair just one point ahead of Mini racing expert Bill Sollis, who has returned to the category after several years in historics and running a MINI Challenge team. Sollis scored a memorable victory at

Quick Links

his home track last month in the second race, having been fifth in the opener, which was won by newcomer to Minis, Shayne Deegan before the latter crashed out in the second. Other past winners to look out for include Aaron Smith who lies fourth overall in the standings thanks to a pair of fourth places at Brands, Colin Peacock and Dan Wheeler. There may also be one or two Invitation cars sharing the 1.3-litre Miglia grid, with a trophy in the offing for the first of these past the chequered flag. Either way, it should be a busy old weekend on –track and the usual heart-in-themouth manoeuvres. Enjoy!

Chairman’s Chat Words of wisdom from the man at the top.

W

ell the first rounds of the Dunlop & Mini Spares Mini Se7en and Mini Miglia Championship didn’t happen........ storm Katie had her way!! I gather, from those who stayed at the circuit on the Sunday night, that most people didn’t get much sleep and the rain seemed to go on and on. In all the 50+ years that I have been following motorsport, I can’t remember a meeting being cancelled due to flooding on the circuit, before this one. I have to say, the track officials at Combe tried their very best to pump the water away, mainly around Quarry corner, but I’m afraid nature won in the end. A great pity, as many people had turned up, but ‘That’s Life’. So our first race in our 50th season was Round 3 and 4 on the Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch. Was this coincidence or planned? The Mini Se7en Racing Club’s first ever race was at Brands Hatch on April 17th 1966. I have to admit, I didn’t realise it was the same date until I got home. What a fantastic turnout from the Club, with 46 cars {the maximum grid size} lining up for the first race. Thinking that we might be oversubscribed, we had made a request to the MSA to increase the grid size to 50, to commemorate our 50th year...... but with no luck; in the end it was not required. What an impressive sight the cars made........ viewed from the commentary box; it took your breath away.... and on top of that, we put on two great races. I was sorry to see some cars

Quick Links

damaged, especially Kelvin Edgar’s car. It looked so pristine before the race......... I hope that we will soon see you Kelvin, back in the paddock. It was also great to see some newcomers to the M7RC and some returnees. Since the meeting Colin has put some effort into arranging another meeting at Castle Combe. The information for this has been posted out, the date being May 29th / 30th. This will be regarded as Round 1 and 2. Richard Williamson has issued a bulletin about this meeting...... see the website under downloads. The Committee has also issued a bulletin regarding 4 way shock absorbers in the Mini Miglia Formula. This bulletin has clarified the subject and indicated that the ‘banning’ of 4 way adjustable shock absorbers, was the result of a Membership vote at the 2014 AGM/ATD. Turning to our next round at Cadwell Park.......... the last time the Club raced at this testing Lincolnshire circuit was in 2014, when Andrew Deviny won both the

Mini Se7en Races, Dan Wheeler won Race 1 and Rupert Deeth won Race 2 in the Miglias. I have only raced at Cadwell once; I can remember two sections of this narrow track.... The Gooseneck and The Mountain. If you get it right...it’s a fantastic feeling. As an added ‘bonus’, don’t’ forget you are only 23 miles away from Skegness!!! I’m hoping to have our first meeting of the Technical SubCommittee at Cadwell........ so if there is anything that you feel needs discussing or clarifying in the regulations, please let me know. See you there

Mini Se7en News Build a Mini 7 model competition

H

ere’s your chance to win tickets to come watch a weekend of Mini 7 Racing Club action later in the season, whilst also having some fun! We’ve created a build-it-yourself Mini Se7en or Miglia model and are inviting you to build the best one you can. There’s two options - either download the model drawings as a printable PDF file below or visit our stand at Brands Hatch on 17th April or Cadwell Park on 14-15th May to buy a pre-printed version. Then simply colour it in, sticker it up or even Photoshop it to your heart’s content, glue it all together and upload a pic to our Facebook page wall. To keep things a bit more fair, there will be two prizes, one for smaller children (12 and under) and

one for the big children and adults (13 and over). Entries and judging will conclude on 31st May. We’ll create an album on Facebook and the two models with the most likes will win the

F

ollowing the abandonment of the Castle Combe race meeting on 28 March, the Committee of the M7RC has been able to re-schedule a new date on the calendar with Castle Combe Racing Club (CCRC), and which is now scheduled for Sunday/Monday 29/30 May. This re-scheduled championship meeting will to all intents and purposes still count as Rounds 1 & 2 in the 2016 Dunlop Mini Challenges supported by Mini Spares, as per 2016 Regulations SR.1.5. With the support of the membership, the MSA and Castle Combe, we are pleased to confirm that we will return to a hopefully drier Castle Combe, and with the meeting now over two days, the organisers are offering us extra track time with a free practice on the Sunday. The draft plan is to qualify and have Race 1 on Sunday, and then Race 2 on Monday. Read more at http://www.mini7.co.uk/news.php?p=662

The

MINI SE7EN: RACE 1 Mini Se7ens, starting on the same grid as the Miglias stretched all the way back to Clark Curve – the 13 rows being headed by Max Hunter and Ashley Davies – both drivers being touted as ‘the ones to watch’. The start was a clean one from most - Max Hunter losing out to Davies and Davis from his pole position and Andrew Deviny giving himself plenty to do after reacting to the Miglias start and dropping from his solid sixth on the grid. The rest of the field was closely contested, with a stream of Se7ens filing through Druids on lap one. Max Hunter looked to be

trying to make amends and get back on track with the leaders, getting back up to second through the first lap and during the early stages of the race there was nothing in between the rest of the pack as Davies looked to have the early advantage. The first show of unreliability struck the number 2 Se7en of Darren Thomas – inbetween the races another engine was dropped into his car – the fluid dropped through Paddock Hill Bend almost catching one of the Miglias out next time round. Shaun Tarlton had made a great start to the race in his ‘S’ and was mixing with the Se7ens – this race weekend being his pre-season test and first competitive

outing in the car all in one so there is surely more to come from the 791 car and driver through the year. Hutnter was now on the tail of Davies and after 4 laps there was little, if anything to choose between the two of them. The rest of the field had started to fall behind – to the tune of 7 seconds by this, the halfway stage. Watching Hunter – he wasn’t trying anything at this stage, was he waiting for the right moment or was second enough at this early stage of the season? The top two clearly weren’t losing anytime by being in close proximity and there was minimal defending from the leader. Their heads were screwed on; the following packs were • Next Race • Archive

Davies and Hunter were still pulling away from Davis, Wanstall, Hunt, Deviny – climbing back up from his ‘false’ start – Pearson, Burge, Mcdonald, Sanderson; who, as the top 10 had pulled clear of the lower order – a clear distinction in the lap times showing the sheer competitiveness of the head of this grid and the quality of the car needed to compete for the silverware. Tarlton maintained

his ‘S’ category class lead, catching, and passing exchamp Tina Cooper in her Se7en eventually. As the Miglias began to lap the field the top 10 remained as close as they had been – Davies taking the win from Hunter (The only two Se7ens not to be lapped). These two were the class of the field and Max admitted later on that unless there was a mistake from Ashley he wasn’t going to try anything – the points for second were in the bag. MINI MIGLIA: RACE 1 unny Spring morning greeted the 18 strong grid for the Miglias which was made up of champions past and present but, on pole position was Shayne Deegan making his championship debut. Shayne, the current Stock Hatch champion has made the move to the Dunlop Mini Miglia championship to push himself in something new – given the strength of the grid he certainly has found a challenge but with the ex-Peter Baldwin car at his disposal he is sure to feature at the sharp end of the pack with Kane Astin not looking to give up the coveted number one without a fight – qualifying Quick Links

saw Kane occupying a watching brief from the often favoured P2 on the Brands Hatch grid. The scene was set and the 2016 season could finally get underway after the Castle Combe washout! Deeth, Smith ,Peacock, Wheeler and Sollis, made up the rest of the top 7 and it was this group of drivers who, after qualifying looked to have got the most from their 1300 slick-shod Miglias around the challenging 2.4mile Brands Hatch GP circuit. From his P2 grid slot, Astin got the jump on Deegan and the inside line into Paddock Hill bend and up to Druids, Deegan made sure this wasn’t going to stick and boldly stuck to his outside line down

Graham Hill onto the Cooper straight and regained the lead on the run up to the GP circuit loop – a big statement on lap one of the championship to put the manners on the reigning champ! He means business clearly. Lap one saw the top two pull over 1 second clear of the chasing pack who were all keeping each other busy – the big winner from the opening exchange was Niven Burgees moving from 8th to 5th. Lap three saw Deeth move up to third which was already 4.3s off the leader who, in turn thanks to consecutive fastest laps was pulling clear to the tune of 1.8s on Astin. Peacock, Le May, Howard, Coulson, Summerhayes, Sims, Harvey and Knight and a closely fought battle for the final podium position was starting to develop. The racing in this pack was close, with no quarter given but it was clean and a great advert for the championship in front of the crowds who had come to see the British GT and F3 ‘pro’ drivers. As the race neared its halfway point, Sollis was starting to get back into the swing of things – it has been several years after all since the past champ raced - climbing up to 5th and looking like the man on the move passing Dan Wheeler to lead the pack as Smith was still shadowing Deeth for 3rd. Traffic started to play a factor moving into the final phase of the 10 lap race with all but the top two Se7ens being lapped by the leaders – Astin after the race acknowledged that Deegan did a much better job at managing the traffic – come the chequered flag he would Quick Links

end up 10s off the winner. The lapped cars, didn’t give Deeth any breathing room and Smith would follow him over the line only 1.2s off the rear bumper of the number 23 car – the previous lap the gap was only 0.2s so maybe Smith conceded that 4th was as good as it would get. Sollis consolidated 5th pulling 6.4s clear of the scuffle for 6th which included nine cars separated by less than 4 seconds, Peacock took 6th on the line up from 8th on the previous lap and was followed

All in all this was a great first race of the championship with some rivalries for the season certainly starting to develop and an assured drive from the newcomer Deegan, the only driver to get into the 1m 44s laptimes setting a new lap record for the Mini Miglias. From pole, it was his to win – it will be interesting to see what the rest of the season brings – in a car that Chairman Nick Cooke recalls has ‘won more races than he has had hot dinners’ thoughts of a championship assault must be on his mind. mid-summer date from the NRSCC North on the 7 July produced the only oversubscribed entry of the season, with the 24-car grid limit necessitating a qualifying race for the Se7ens’ 32-car entry. This 10-lapper was won by Mark Sims after a ding-dong battle with Jason Porter was only concluded when the latter clipped the Hairpin tyres and dropped to third behind John Pearson. The first nine home were then added to the 15 cars already qualified for the main race later on, although one of them wasn’t Rich Williamson

who could only finish 12th in the borrowed Steve Farndon, ex-Tina Cooper ’93 title-winning car. An equally entertaining 12-lap Final gave a narrow victory to Rob Selby by just 0.49s from polesitter Steve Bell and Tim Sims, season champion Phil Manser setting fastest lap in fourth, followed home by Rob Cullum and Dave Percival, with Paul Thompson further back in the order. The Miglias mustered 20 cars for their 12 laps, the margin of just 0.59s separating Chris Lewis from pole position man Peter Baldwin in second, with Bill Sollis setting a new lap record of 76.26mph

Other familiar names in the field included triplechampion Myk Cable in seventh, Robert Humphreys, Phil Harvey, Ian Curley and champion-to-be Stewart Drake.

he BRSCC North ran the 5 May meeting, rounds 6-of-15 in the National Challenges. The first of the 8-lappers around the 2.25-mile circuit saw the 850cc Se7ens led home by Chris Tyrrell (Calbrook) from Gary Hall (Longman) by 2.3s, the champion-elect having started from pole and the series runner-up setting fastest lap of 1:57.5. Third in the season standings, Steve Mole, had been in third in the race too but dropped out, leaving the final podium position to Derek Miller in a Funneltune machine. Ben Dutson, Ron Phillips (Howley) and Dave Goodridge completed the leaderboard, while also in the entry were Alan Jackson, Graeme Davis

and Ralph Budd. Thirteen started, nine finished. A winning gap of 4.3s looked more comprehensive for Chris Lewis who started from pole in the 998cc Miglias, but early on he was challenged by Bev Comber and Russell Grady before both retired, the latter having swapped engines after qualifying.

Ian Gunn moved up to second therefore with Graham Chivers driving a blinder into third including fastest lap of 1:59.7. Dick Robinson, Gerald Dale and Rob McIntyre were next up of the 11 finishers from 16 starters, while Mini Magazine’s technical expert, Keith Calver, was also an entry. meeting for rounds 10 of the Leyland National Challenges, and 8 laps apiece for both Mini 1000 and Mini 850. It was another ‘Miglia’ victory for Ian Briggs, this time the gap a bit smaller at 1.4s from champion-elect and Wessex Kentreds teammate Mike Curnow in second. Phil Spurling (Oselli) shadowed both in third, while the battle for fourth was somewhat heated, Pete Morris (Maguire) and Paul Perera (Wadham Stringer) clashing ontrack and apparently continuing their ‘argument’ in the paddock afterwards! David Abbott (Swiftune) rounded out the top half dozen in a field of 17 cars, while Briggs completed his good day with pole and fastest lap to his name. In the ‘Se7ens’ thrash,

and despite setting fastest lap chasing leader Graham Wenham (Micktuned), Chris Tyrrell (Calbrook) only took victory out of the last corner when the former’s transmission broke, Wenham coasting over the line before third-placed Julian Cutler could pounce too. Grahams Woskett (Ripspeed) and Larrington (TW Racing) came next followed by John West, while Martin Goodall’s Tiger comic-liveried car (named Marvellous Martin, after the comic’s cartoon strip) was seventh. Pole had been taken by Hugo Shipley but he dropped out early on, while Ian Mittell very nearly landed atop the marshals’ post when he went off on the downhill plunge from The Gooseneck to Mansfield corner! Sixteen cars started, 11 finished.

Finally, the Leyland Cars Mini 1275 GT Challenge paid a brace of visits courtesy of the BRSCC North. The first, round 11-of-18 on 25 July gave Paul Taft victory and fastest lap over the course of 8 laps in his Motospeed car, edging out champion-elect, and polesitter, Roger Saunders’ Sigma example. Geoff Till claimed third with Malcolm Leggate fourth, ‘75 Miglia champion Alan Curnow fifth and A-Series tuner Glyn Swift in sixth, while touring car legend Steve Soper was a dnf after going off at the Gooseneck and clipping a course official trying to get out of the way… Also on the bill was a round of the Troy Tires-supported Northern Special Saloons series, in which Class D was effectively a ‘Northern Mini 7’ category, also taking in races at Croft and Rufforth.

By round 16 on 26 September, the previous 11 starters were down to just eight, and again Paul Taft was in front when the chequer was waved, this time after 10 laps having started on pole. However, he and Steve Soper put on an entertaining duel throughout, the pair split by just 0.2s, with Jim Burrows in third, William Pownall fourth and rounding out the finishers, Malc Leggate who had the consolation of sharing fastest lap with Soper. Roger Saunders and Alan Curnow had been in the battle up front but both crashed out.

adwell didn’t 1966 feature on 50 Years Ago the calendar for several seasons, but on 7 May 1966 the new Formula Mini-7 category went to Silverstone for its second ever championship race. Ten cars had the grid to themselves for 10 laps around the 12.608-mile Club layout, and the lead battle was a humdinger, with Bob Fox (Team 848) only securing victory after pole man Richard Bromley went off between Copse and Maggotts, although the latter did establish a lap record of 1:22.6. This allowed Brian Vawer up into second, with Gordon Line third, H Stewart (Aurelli) fourth, Geoff Gilkes (Oselli) fifth and RF Cottrill sixth.
