Despite Storm Katie’s best efforts back in March when the opening rounds were flooded out, the M7RC has re-scheduled a quick return to Combe as part of the Club’s landmark 50th Anniversary season MINI SE7EN & S CLASS With four races run since the abandoned fixture here two months ago, Welsh speed demon Ashley Davies has established himself firmly at the head of the Quick Links

Max Hunter and Andrew Deviny, along with seasoned campaigner Graeme Davis, also scoring topthree finishes. The revitalised budget-tuned 1275cc S-Class has seen a healthy take-up of entries this season, and although 2014 champion Shaun Tarlton has been best in class
twice, newcomers Justin Cooper and Josh Collins have taken a class win apiece too. Expect a packed entry and plenty of thrills from the mini buzz-bombs to keep up the entertainment factor – as it has done for the past half-century!

Cadwell, and a third win at Brands before a DNF in the second race there reduced his tally. 2014 champion Rupert Deeth started well at Brands with two high finishes but will want to forget his Cadwell trip after a crash and a lowly finish, while Aaron Smith in third overall is a proven race winner. An equally healthy line-up is promised for Combe, but picking a winner won’t be easy - or keeping up with the pace of the action as these mini Touring Cars reach speeds in excess of 120mph!

MINI SE7EN: RACE 1 errific 26-car grid for the Se7ens was headed by Charlie Budd, recording his first ever pole position in the category, ahead of three-time champion Andrew Deviny, Spencer Wanstall and Brands double-winner Ashley Davies. Quickest S-Class was Josh Collins in 16th overall, while making his M7RC debut was Andy Dickinson on the 10th row. Missing for the mid-afternoon race however would be Ian Deviny after being taken ill. The race itself was shaping up to be a real humdinger, with a train of cars all vying for Quick Links
the 20 points top prize. Until lap seven that is when, having led impressively for some distance, Wanstall overcooked it into The Mountain and found himself facing the wrong way. As the first couple of cars either dodged by or were forced to brake, the unsighted Max Hunter (on a charge up from the back of the grid) firstly caught Deviny a hefty whack in the left rear corner before cannoning into the stationary Wanstall with some force. The emergency vehicles were scrambled and Max was eventually taken away suffering from a severe winding, although the race

remained under yellow flags, at least at the crash scene. After this the pace naturally dropped and the flag was shown at nine laps, which left Davies again in front for the third time in three races, by 0.739s from Budd who scored by far his best Se7en result to date, and with Graeme Davis in third. Impressive performances too came from newcomers Tom Sanderson and Robert Pearson in fourth and fifth respectively, while Lewis Selby completed a great drive from the back into sixth place, like Hunter having only recorded one lap in qualifying. Andrew Deviny led away from pole and held the line into Coppice, with Budd and Davies all over him like a rash. The inevitable soon happened though, and with what seems a new-found cool head under pressure, Davies found a way past and thereafter barely put a wheel wrong on his way to a relatively comfortable 4.959s victory. Almost unnoticed in sixth, Sanderson collected another hefty lot of points with a smooth run, likewise Billison in seventh was happy to have cured his early season problem with ‘boggo’ chaindriven timing, and Proctor also had a more fruitful run than the day before. The next trio along should have been Davis, Daniel Budd and Window, but only the latter survived a threeinto-two-won’t-go scenario cresting The Mountain, the other two ending up against the Armco on the grassy downslope… The S-Class battle was reversed on this occasion, Collins edging clear of Cooper after the latter encountered a misfire, both sandwiching Briscall in 12th spot. GUIDERY GETS THE NOD
A
WET WILTSHIRE track for the seventh round of the National Miglia Challenge didn’t dampen the action; Martin Guidery led a fantastic four-car blur over the line.
Motoring News reported:
“The steady downpours did nothing to dampen the ardour of the Mini 1000 competitors. Mike Fry kept a watching brief of the place swapping duel between Dave Carvell, Martin Guidery and Chris Hampshire for half the race, and when Fry made his move he quickly took second place at Camp. Roy Kwei and Rick Cutting had a good scrap over fifth and if the race had been a little longer Kwei might well have challenged the leaders. A delighted Guidery grabbed first in the usual last lap, last corner sort out.”

From the Archives: Castle Combe Race of the Day Autosport said:
“The top four shuffled themselves avidly”
“If only every class of racing produced the spectacle and excitement of the National Mini 1000 Championship. This seventh round, sponsored by Hartwells of Bath, began with David Carvell leading fellow second row qualifier Martin Guidery with Chris Hampshire, Mike Fry and championship leader Rick Cutting hard on their heels from row one. Cutting got left behind to scrap with Roy Kwei while the top four shuffled themselves avidly to finish with garage proprietor Guidery heading Fry, Carvell and Hampshire - first to fourth covered by 0.5sec! - while Kwei eventually broke away from Cutting RESULT: to finish fifth. Amazingly, these guys BRSCC – SW Monday 25 May 1981 receive no financial reward for their NATIONAL MINI MIGLIA (1000) splendid efforts.”

ini 7 is not just a racing series, it’s a club. It’s where like-minded people, just like you can socialise and get to know each other, chat cars and Minis and find people who just get it. You don’t need to be a racer to join the club, and if racing is something you’re just getting involved in, then this is a great way to learn from and chat to the pros.
