In recent poll of members, Donington was voted the favourite venue to go racing, so expect the usual exciting action as the Mini Seven Racing Club celebrates its 50th Anniversary MINI SE7EN + S-CLASS Despite not quite making the podium last time out, young Welsh hotshoe Ashley Davies still holds a healthy 18-point advantage over his nearest rivals, having Quick Links

drives up the order helped maintain his series lead. Bedfordshire’s Max Hunter scored two wins in Wiltshire to move into second overall, with Andrew Deviny and Charlie Budd next up on points, Deviny also forced to start from the last row, while Budd suffered mechanical woes in the races having qualified on pole position for the opener. Excellent front-running drives came from Lewis Selby with a second and third, likewise Spencer

Wanstall and Kieren McDonald who also made a podium apiece, while Josh Collins scored a brace of S-Class wins to extend his category lead, but lies 4 points adrift of Leon Oli Window in the Novices standings. There should be a healthy entry for the smaller capacity cars, and also plenty of close battles around the East Midlands circuit – as we have come to expect!

MINI MIGLIA (+ MINI INVITATION) elation of 2016 has been Mini newcomer Shayne Deegan in the successful Peter Baldwin-tended car, the Cambridgeshire driver having racked up five wins from six races to lie 2 points clear of Kent-based Aaron Smith. Previously a title winner in a Stock Hatch Saxo, Deegan’s pace last time out at Combe left his rivals trailing, and he also lowered the Miglia lap record by well over a second!

of three second places have been tempered with a blown engine in the last round. Former multiMini champion Bill Sollis won round 4 on the full Brands GP layout in April (his home circuit) but was absent at Combe so sits further down the table than might be expected. Others to look out for near the front are Sam Summerhayes, 2015 champion Ruper Deeth, Colin Peacock and James Coulson. Like the Se7ens the Miglia entry should be a strong one, and all eyes will be on a seriously competitive pack chasing down the series leader’s tally – should be a corker!

Max-imum assault by hunter

In

MINI SE7EN: RACE 1 the 1-0-litre category, the battle for the lead was somewhat closer than in the bigger-engined category, and Saturday’s scheduled 20 minute dash produced 18 laps of ding-dong action among several cars. However, it was Max Hunter who emerged from the leading pack to snatch a 0.694s victory from Lewis Selby, with Spencer Wanstall third and, along with Hunter, a good result for both after their unfortunate Cadwell damage. Having missed Cadwell, Kieren McDonald had a terrific run to fourth, including fastest lap, while pre-race favourite Ashley Davies stormed up to fifth from the penultimate row after breaking a crank early in

qualifying. Similarly, Andrew Deviny climbed from the back row to eighth, his practice curtailed after collecting a spinning Tina Cooper at Quarry. Finishing in between Davies and Deviny were Steve Trench, a welcome result after a few mechanical woes, and Leon Wightman who, as he had done so at Cadwell, was running his car as an Invitation. In ninth place seasoned campaigner Graeme Davis showed a pair of newcomers the way home, Dom Burger and Tom Sanderson both running well in their first season of Se7ens, a little way ahead of Leon Oli Window. On the DNF list were Tina Cooper, Robert Pearson, James Bull and Charlie Budd, the latter having set an impressive pole position but then suffering engine problems thereafter.

MINI SE7EN: RACE 2 right Monday afternoon again saw a terrific scrap for top spot, but once again Hunter found the knack of being in front when it mattered, this time by just 0.856s over a reduced 11 lap distance and also setting the fastest lap. However, putting in his best performance yet in the category was McDonald who not only started from pole but bettered his weekend with a second place finish, just edging out Selby who went away with a decent helping of points too. In fourth, Davies produced another championin-the-making charge from the back up to fourth, just ahead Quick Links

of Wanstall, and maintained his series lead by a healthy 18 points. Completing the top six was Deviny, also repeating his climb through the field but this time relegating Trench and Wightman back a place apiece. In ninth, Window was the best of the Novices this time after a good duel with Sanderson, while in 10th Collins took a double S-Class victory after Cooper and Bull dropped out. Completing the finishers were Proctor, Hopper, Burger and Briscall in a close four-car group, with Budd once again hampered by engine gremlins at the tail. Davis and Pearson were the other pair on the DNF list and Tina Cooper failed to start.

MINI MIGLIA: RACE 2 day’s overcast but dry race proved a lot closer, Deegan’s winning margin down to just over 3 secs from Deeth, although on this occasion the result was taken at 7 laps after the first part was red-flagged. That was still enough laps however for the race winner to further lower the lap record to a scintillating 1:16.466. The cause of the red-flag had been a hefty accident at Tower for Drew, rebounding off the tyrewall back onto the track. However, this incident then took a bizarre twist when one of the safety trucks pulled sharply onto the circuit giving Humphreys Quick Links

and Burrows no chance of avoiding a collision with each other, the latter unable to take the restart along with the shaken Drew due to damage incurred. Astin also failed to finish after his engine let go on lap 5 when leading the chase of the runaway Deegan. onington’s spot on the calendar was held over the 21-22 October weekend, for the 12th and final round of the Dunlop Challenges. The Mini Se7en title had already been decided by then, Andrew Deviny clinching his first National crown at the previous Rockingham meet. Nonetheless, the runner-up spot was still up for grabs, and Geoff Letts served his intent by setting pole ahead of brother Alan, with Deviny third, Niv Burge fourth and Max Hunter fifth. In a race titled ‘Fabulous Fun’ in Pitlane annual review, the result was in the

Although he set fastest lap, Deviny was to spin off near the end after contact, leaving Hunter to get the better of a sideways Paul Thompson to snatch victory and second in the overall standings, the latter dropping to fourth behind the Letts pairing, followed by Ian Deviny from Gareth Hunt. Also among the 24-car field were Kane and Damon Astin, Paul Spark, Graeme Davis, James Coulson, Tristen Knight, Anthony Towey, Malcolm Keat, Paul Clark and Darren Thomas.

here were two visits to Donington during the Mini Se7en 20th Anniversary season, the first for rounds 5-of12 in the National Challenges on 14-15 June as support to the Thundersports Trophy, and on the full 2.5-mile GP circuit including the Melbourne Loop. The 850cc Se7ens were on early Sunday morning, and a superb 10-lap dice between early leader Gary Hall and pole position man Chris Tyrrell was finally decided in favour of Hall who fended off two attempts at a pass on the last lap. Ben Dutson briefly split the pair before settling for third ahead of Steve Mole, Peter

Brown and Alan Jackson, with Graeme Davis and Tina Cooper also among the 19 starters. The race winner also set a new lap record. Concluding the meeting on late Sunday afternoon 1986 were the 30 Years 1000cc Ago Miglias, and while Russell Grady made the best of his pole start, it was Chris Lewis storming up from the back of the grid who starred, setting a (new) lap record some 1.89s quicker than anyone else could manage on his way to second, just 2.90s shy of Grady after 10 laps. Filling the next places were Gerald Dale, Graham Smith, Peter Calver and John Bailey, with 14 of the 18 starters making the finish. For rounds 8 of the Challenges on 7 September it was back to the shorter 1.96-mile layout, each class again set for 10 laps each. In the Se7ens race,

poleman Chris Tyrrell managed to hold onto his lead throughout, despite a lack of brakes from early on. Steve Mole was his closest challenger until forced to ease off with falling oil pressure, which allowed Gary Hall to close in third having eased past Ben Dutson in fourth. The top three all shared the fastest lap too. The next three to finish are all still around the M7RC paddock today, Bill Sollis taking fifth from Tina Cooper, then top Novice Alan Jackson in seventh out of 18 starters. Chris Lewis took control of the Miglia race from the start but had Russell Grady closing to within 3.1s at the flag, with Graham Chivers best of the rest ahead of poleman John Davies, Malcolm Harrison and Richard Colburn. Thirteen of the 19 starters finished.

…thus it would be over a decade before the groundbreaking 850cc Mini category visited the East Midlands venue.

ini 7 is not just a racing series, it’s a club. It’s where like-minded people, just like you can socialise and get to know each other, chat cars and Minis and find people who just get it. You don’t need to be a racer to join the club, and if racing is something you’re just getting involved in, then this is a great way to learn from and chat to the pros.
