The magnificent Mini Se7ens and Miglias return to Brands Hatch for their second visit of the 2016 campaign, and once again a full-tobursting entry is expected in the M7RC’s 50th Anniversary season. MINI SE7EN + S-CLASS Four wins in the first four races, including a brace on the full GP circuit here in April, has helped Ashley Davies from South Wales to a healthy lead in the 1.0-litre Quick Links

Pit & Paddock time out at Donington, Lewis Selby, so expect them to be up front. Also in the mix should be Max Hunter who lies sixth overall with a pair of first and second places but who missed the last meeting, while Spencer Wanstall, Charlie Budd, Graeme Davis and Kieren McDonald have also visited the podium to date. In the S-Class for milder-tuned 1275cc units, Zack Booth caused a shock last month by winning the Donington opener overall, but the car’s

regular driver Justin Cooper is scheduled to be back behind the wheel in his attempt to challenge current category leader Josh Collins, with James Bull splitting the pair of them. The S-Class are numbered in the #700s and carry green championship decals. It is 50 years since the Mini Se7en formula first graced the circuits, at Brands Hatch, so there should be just as much excitement from this weekend’s grid as there was back then. Happy half-century!

MINI MIGLIA (+ MINI INVITATION) hough ‘only’ in its 47th season, the powerpacked 1.3-litre class is still one of the most revered racing formulas on any racecard, such is their lightning pace and super-sticky, wide slicks. Quite unusually however, one driver is dominating the charts, Cambridgeshire’s Shayne Deegan racking up seven-out-of-eight victories, and only failing to finish once when he went off into the gravel at Brands in April.

Alt

In second overall, Maidstonebased Aaron Smith has been steadily picking up points to lie just 11 shy of the lead, and has won here before. Likewise, Mini racing expert Bill Sollis is another who knows this circuit like the back of his hand, triumphing here in April, Quick Links

but a limited campaign means he is not due to enter this time around. At nearly all the meetings so far, the chase behind the leader for second has seen anything up to 10 cars all in with a shout, with current and former champions Kane Astin and Rupert Deeth to the fore, along with Dan Wheeler and Rob Howard also picking up high scoring finishes. Look out too for newcomer Stuart Gilby in an Owens Fabrication car, the lucky prize winner of a Miglia race competition. In recent seasons, the non-points Invitational class has seen one or two cars along for the ride and their presence certainly helps create a busy grid, but keep your eyes on the front of the pack to see who can derail the Deegan express. Should be a corker!

the result would be in doubt to the end as the leading trio were all over each other, whilst further back the action was getting rather too close at times, with loose bootlids, headlamps, wheelspats and tyremarks all too evident. The leading trio became four when Booth shook off the attentions Biggest surprise however of Spencer was row 3 which saw Kieren McDonald joined by an S-Class, Wanstall, Gareth Hunt the car of Justin Cooper but and Charlie pedalled by late replacement, Budd, while and former 1.3i Mini racer, Daniel Budd, Zack Booth. and to everyone’s surprise, himself included, Booth exited the chicane with a clear road ahead and, in a first for the S-Class, took the flag almost 2s ahead of… Selby, who had recovered from his clash to take second, with Deviny gathering it all up to salvage the remaining podium position! The next bunch also contrived to bounce off each other, Wanstall emerging from the kerfuffle to take fourth (and fastest lap), then C Budd, Hunt, D Budd, Sanderson and Collins the second S-Class along. Several seconds later Dom Burger headed Steven Hopper for 10th after Steve Trench, Julian Proctor and Leon Window were shuffled Quick Links

On the DNF list therefore were McDonald who crawled into the pitlane with a puncture after his bash, Steve Baker, David Robinson and Tom Hartwell (running #189 but not an Invitation class), while Leon Wightman (running #45 but actually still an Invitation class) went off on the fourth lap, likewise Graeme

Not

MINI MIGLIA: RACE 1 the biggest entry to date, and Kane Astin’s withdrawal dropped it to 11. Pole went to 2014 champion Rupert Deeth by 0.130s from points leader Shayne Deegan, then Aaron Smith and Dan Wheeler on row 2. Deeth made the better getaway to lead out of Redgate but by the end of the lap Deegan was in front and stayed there for the next nine laps, despite Deeth’s best efforts to keep him in sight. The gap was ‘only’ 3.428s at the flag but the winner had also lowered the lap record by well over a second! The battle for third however was where most attention Quick Links

was focused, with eight cars all in a constantly changing train, although the leading duo had escaped up the road by 20s. First it was Wheeler leading Rob Howard and Smith, then the gap to them was closed up by Tony Le May from James Coulson, Colin Peacock, Mark Sims and Sam Summerhayes, with a further gap to Gary Warburton. Soon Howard moved into third for a spell before Smith pulled off a daring manoeuvre into McLeans to hold station, and then the final lap saw the usual frantic jostling into the chicane for the final time, with Howard timing his sprint onto the finishing straight to pip Wheeler for the last podium spot, followed in blink-quick

The

MINI SE7EN: RACE 2 re was a fair amount of refettling overnight and 25 cars (again minus Keat) lined up with Davies on pole, and hoping the gearbox rebuild would be ok. Selby was alongside, with Davis and Wanstall behind. Even before the race proper on the warm-up lap, Collins somehow managed to dump his S-Class in the gravel on the run out of Redgate, caught out by his new stiffer suspension set-up when weaving on cold tyres. The recovery tractor dragged him out but he would be playing catch up thereafter. Davies held the lead for the first couple of laps before Selby found a way past, with Quick Links

Davis, Wanstall and Thomas on their tails. Just behind these, McDonald in sixth was recovering from a half spin on the opening lap, but was being harried by Deviny, Booth in the leading S-Class, Hunt, and C Budd. Then on lap four we had yellows waved at Redgate for the beached car of Booth, who had come off second best with Deviny in a twointo-one-won’t-go clash, the resulting delay as the tractor dragged the crippled #700 car out of harm’s way bunching up the field once more. By half distance Selby was still out in front but Wanstall had sneaked past Davies as the latter’s gears began to play up again, while again behind the leaders the battle scars were beginning

to mount up. Wightman had by now retired from the top10, followed on lap seven by McDonald from fifth place and a lap later by Thomas from fourth. With a couple of laps to go the lead trio of Selby, Davies and Wanstall had found a bit of breathing space, although the latter’s rear bumper had now departed, as had Deviny’s front bumper, himself leading the rest in fourth. On the last lap Davies managed to find

a way past Selby for what seemed his fifth win of the season, but unable to hold second gear into the chicane he understeered wide, allowing Selby back past on the run to the line in a terrific finish, with Wanstall right on their tails in third (and fastest lap again). Behind them there were further lastcorner shenanigans, Deviny over the kerbs to take fourth and Hunt unable to slow in time and going straight into the gravel to avoid collecting

Davis. The latter thus took fifth, with Sanderson and Daniel Budd next through. Brother Charlie Budd led a whole train of cars for eighth, followed by Baker, Window, Trench, Hopper, Proctor and Hartwell.

Issue 6

With Hunt trundling over the line in 15th Burger led the next quartet including Robinson, then Bull a very happy winner of the S-Class by a gnat’s whisker from Dickinson, while Towey just held onto 20th from Collins who rued his early indiscretion. So, next stop Brands Mini Festival – can young Davies keep his series lead or will the older heads pile on the pressure? MINI SE7EN ROUND 8 RESULT 1 2 3 4 5

1976 n its first season 40 Years the three-tier Ago Leyland Cars Challenge offered a packed calendar, and the second National series visit to Brands for the Mini 850s (nee Se7ens) came on 13 June for round 7 out of 18. Hosted by the BRSCC, a full 20-car grid left 7 non-starters for the 10-lapper. Poleman Graham Wenham in his Micktuned car took a narrow 0.2s victory over Terry Pudwell’s Lawrence-tuned version, the pair a little way ahead of Julian Cutler in third, then Graham ‘Gramps’ Woskett (Ripspeed) fourth, John West fifth and Graham Child sixth. Chris Tyrrell had been up at the front despite overheating, but dropped out when a wheel fell off at Paddock and planted him in the barriers. Pudwell and Jim Mancey shared the fastest lap. series visits to Kent, round 12 of 18 coming on 15 August hosted by the BARC, then the finale on 10 October run by the BRSCC. In the first of these, Ian Briggs’ Harris-tuned car and Mike Curnow (Longman) led a Wessex Kentreds team one-two, Briggs starting from pole and breaking the lap record with a 0:56.0. Derek May led the rest some distance behind, with Eric Groves’ Gunk car fourth, Alan Seekings (Swiftune) fifth and Phil Spurling (Oselli) sixth from 20 starters. Five cars missed the cut but most unfortunate in the race was Martin Guidery who rolled heavily at Surtees. With Briggs absent for the finale, champion-elect Mike Curnow was joined in the WK team by the previous season’s champion, his brother Alan who set pole. The latter dropped out early however leaving the former to clean up, including another fastest lap, with May and Spurling joining him on the podium. Colin Beckwith, Roy Kwei and Bob Taylor completed the top half dozen while such was the over-subscribed entry, a consolation for the non-qualifiers was run in with the concurrent 1275 GT race, Paul Perera the best of the 1000s in 7th overall, and indeed the
