What has now become a regular fixture on the M7RC calendar, Oulton Park offers the Minis a range of topographic challenges to showcase their crowd-pleasing antics; indecently quick, bite-sized saloons, and arguably the closest wheel-to-wheel, door handle-todoor handle, action around! MINI SE7EN + S-CLASS The 50th Anniversary of Mini Se7en is shaping up to be a real humdinger in the closing stages of the season, and with six rounds Quick Links

starts indicating the 2011 Novice champion has really come of age in the formula. However, with 20 points for a win, his campaign is far from done and dusted, as Lewis Selby and Max Hunter in second and third overall respectively have won this season too, and chased Davies onto the podium in both races at Brands last time out. Behind this in-form trio lie halfa-dozen winners-in-waiting, including Spencer Wanstall, Charlie Budd, former champion Andrew Deviny, Graeme Davis and Kieren McDonald, all of whom know how to run out in Quick Links
front. Of course, there are plenty of other top-step hopefuls among the well-subscribed entry, with 46 drivers having already appeared so far. Competition among the budget S-Class runners is equally intense, with Josh Collins leading the way, and Zack Booth pulled off the shock of the season by winning overall at Donington in June. A year ago, Davies went away with a win and a third, so expect him to start favourite, but either way whoever wins around the sweeps and dips of the scenic Cheshire venue will have earned their laurels the hard way!

MINI MIGLIA (+ MINI INVITATION) petition at the head of the ‘youthful’ 46 years young category is closer on paper than its longer-established sibling – just 4 points separates the top three. However, the story so far has been all about Shayne Deegan, the Cambridgeshire driver, and double-Stock Hatch champion, pretty much dominating with eight victories in the Peter Baldwintended machine.
Com
In the two races he didn’t win - both at Brands Hatch – he fell off, leaving Bill Sollis and Rob Howard to take the spoils. These two sit further down the table though having missed some races, likewise 2015 champion Kane Astin who has had a mixed bag of results. So it is the consistent Quick Links
high scoring of Dan Wheeler and 2014 champion Rupert Deeth that has enabled both to sit on the shoulder of Deegan going into this meeting. Other likely frontrunners should be Aaron Smith, who set a new lap record 12 months ago, James Coulson and Sam Summerhayes, while one or two Invitation cars may be in the mix too. With dropped scores coming into play at season’s end (the best 13of-16 rounds count), then Deegan is sitting pretty if he can keep up his winning

ratio, but then again the Miglia class is all about experience, and with two afternoon races in quick succession to ramp up the pressure, there are some wily old foxes around to try and slow down the title leader’s charge!

Wanstall joined the leaders and was putting Budd under pressure; they diced closely for several laps before both got sideways on the entry to Paddock Hill Bend on the 16th lap, Budd turning sharply left into the gravel trap where moments later he was joined by Steve Trench, prompting the red flags, and the results declared at 14 laps. MINI MIGLIA: RACE 1 the 20 drivers, Paul Thompson was out for the first time this season, and raffle winner Stuart Gilby was in the Invitation class along with Damon Astin and Ian Fraser. Once again, Shayne Deegan set the pace to clinch pole ahead of Kane Astin. Colin Peacock’s weekend came to an abrupt end on his third qualifying lap, when a tiebar failure sent his car into a series of rolls on the approach to Druids, leaving his once pristine car in a sorry state, fortunately with no personal injury. Aaron Smith was another non-starter after mechanical issues. Kane Astin was quickest off the start, enabling him to switch across and claim the inside line into Paddock Hill Quick Links

Bend. Deegan drew level as the pair of them climbed Hailwood Hill before both cars went off into the gravel trap. Howard now led from Rupert Deeth, Dan Wheeler, Niven Burge, Thompson and Damon Astin. Both Deegan and K Astin were able to extract themselves from the gravel, resuming a lap adrift. Deeth took over the lead on lap two, with Howard remaining in close pursuit. D Astin moved ahead of Burge into fourth, closing quickly on Wheeler in third. Thompson climbed to fifth ahead of Burge on lap six, to head a six-car dice, also including Dave Drew, Sam Summerhayes, James Coulson and Tristen Knight. Both K Astin and Drew pulled off and retired just after the startline on the 17th lap. The lead quartet remained in close formation right up to the chequered flag, Howard’s winning margin being a mere 0.167s over Deeth, as Wheeler secured third from D Astin who clinched the Invitational class. Late dramas saw Dan Budd’s car pushed off the grid, whilst Wanstall suffered a driveshaft failure as the race started, everyone taking avoiding action of the stationary car. Davies led away from Hunter as behind them Selby and Charlie Budd raced side by side into Paddock. Dom Burger ran wide into the first corner gravel on lap two. while Collins was heading the S-Class from O’Shea. Graeme Davis and Robert Pearson had joined in the now five-car scrap for fourth, with Burge and Ross Billison having a close tussle for ninth behind them. Indeed, close dices continued right down the order, with Tina Cooper and Julian Proctor having a cracking scrap for 10th, Steve Baker, Collins, Steve Hopper and Trench poised to join in very shortly. The lead trio had now bunched up together, with Hunter taking the lead at Paddock on the eighth lap, and Sanderson had established himself in fourth. Davies remained in close company with Hunter before retaking the lead at Druids on lap 12. Tarlton had moved ahead of O’Shea into second in the S-Class, with James Bull and Julian Affleck enjoying a close dice over fourth in class.

By now though, dropped oil caused Window and O’Shea to spin off at Graham Hill Bend on the 14th lap, with Hunter running onto the grass there a lap later. The race was then red flagged with the results being declared after 13 laps, Davies’ winning margin over Hunter a very slender 0.176s, with Selby only a further 0.655s behind. Collins secured the S-Class in 14th overall. The close racing throughout ensured everyone finished the race with a smile on their face. MINI SE7EN ROUND 10 RESULT 1 2 3 4 5 6

Astin moved ahead of Coulson and Knight to reach seventh, before the train disputing fourth became seven with the arrival of Mark Sims too. On his ninth lap, Burrows retired after his engine blew rounding Druids. Meanwhile, Howard was experiencing contrasting fortunes after his first victory the previous day; a spin exiting Graham Hill Bend on the opening lap left him playing catch up. Lap by lap he edged closer to the dicing pack ahead, until in the closing laps he eased up, accepting that his valiant chase was in vain. Although a few cars fell by the wayside, there were enough healthy ones left to make for a thoroughly entertaining final race, won incidentally by AC/DC frontman, Brian Johnson, who of course still races an historic Mini today! he National 1986 Challenges visited 30 Years Oulton on 3 May Ago for round 5-of-15, a meeting hosted by the BRSCC North West centre. First up were the 998cc Miglias, a field of 16 cars tackling 10 laps around the then 2.356-mile full circuit. It soon became a Howleytuned duel between title rivals Chris Lewis and Russell Grady, the latter setting the fastest lap and taking the win, but only after poleman Lewis’ engine died just over a lap from the flag. Locally Miglia grid lines up, Grady, Lewis, Hunt front row based Howard Hunt in his ‘ShyPhoto: I Fraser Collection (H Hunt) Tot’ car thus inherited second just ahead of a terrific battle for third between Mark Jones (Slark) and Gerald Dale, with Graham Chivers (Harris) and Ian Gunn (Riley) completing the top six. The somewhat meagre 12-car 850cc Se7en grid was up straight after, a rain shower making track conditions somewhat tricky. Chris Tyrrell made the perfect start and was never caught, recording the quickest race lap and opening out an 8.2s gap by the flag from polesitter Gary Hall. The rest were headed by Ron Phillips on the road, although a false start penalty dropped him to fourth behind Derek Miller, with Peter Kavanagh fifth and, in a racelong tussle for sixth, Graeme Davis just getting the nod over Andrew Chris Tyrrell won the Se7ens race Finniss.
