In what has been another action-packed season, the mega Mini racing circus visits Snetterton for the penultimate rounds of its 50th Anniversary campaign, and we may well see both Se7en and Miglia titles decided in Norfolk over the weekend MINI SE7EN + S-CLASS With appropriately seven victories to his credit so far this season, young Welsh racer Ashley Davies looks on course for his first major Quick Links

Mini se7en Records should be coming into this meeting full of confidence. A clash last time out at Oulton Park has left it all to do for second- and third-placed challengers respectively, Lewis Selby and Max Hunter but, like Davies, both have won this season so it is still all to play for among the top spots. Spencer Wanstall has also raised a few eyebrows on his way to fourth in the standings but awaits a debut win, while others who know how to finish among the trophy positions are Charlie Budd, Graeme Davis, Andrew Deviny and Kieren McDonald. Current reigning Miglia champion, and onetime Se7en champion too, Kane Astin scored a first and second last time out and may well be Quick Links

giving Se7ens another bash alongside his Miglia campaign. It is well worth keeping an eye on the S-Class battle too, the #700-andabove numbered cars currently led on points by Josh Collins, and this season has seen no less than five category winners to highlight the budget formula’s appeal.

As expected, points leader going into the weekend, Ashley Davies grabbed a spot on the front row, but had to settle for second alongside… Kane Astin, out once again in the car of Paul Thompson he raced at Brands in July.

Max Hunter lined up third alongside Spencer Wanstall on row 2, with Lewis Selby. Back on the fourth row. Further back, James Bull needed a tow after pulling off along Lakeside, while come racetime Tom Sanderson and Andrew Deviny were missing from the grid. The 19 cars all got away ok to head into the first corner and soon Davies was out in front from Astin in second. We lost the first of six retirements after two laps, both Tim Stanbridge (in his first Se7en race for nearly 2 decades, although

Steve Trench was next to go on his fourth lap, retiring at Knickerbrook, followed at the same time by Malcolm Keat who dumped his car in the Druids gravel, which required a safety car whilst the marshals dragged him clear of harm. Meanwhile, Astin was through into the lead with Selby further demoting Davies down the order, but then Davies fought back to retake the lead once more and Astin dropped to third, which is how they crossed the line after 9 laps and just over 21 minutes on the clock. The

MINI MIGLIA: RACE 1 Miglias’ qualifying session was somewhat drier than the Se7ens’, but there were no real surprises as Shayne Deegan took pole position by 0.062s from Rupert Deeth in a 10-car field. Reigning champion, Kane Astin set third quickest time but would be absent from the grid after pulling off with engine maladies midsession. was soon in front and initially tailed by James Coulson before Deeth moved back into second after a slow start. Sam Summerhayes also joined in the leading chase before Deeth then spun down the order on lap 6 as the weather deteriorated further to the point where the safety car was sent out, the race then being curtailed after 18+ minutes and 8 laps with no sign of improvement from the skies. Deegan was thus declared the winner ahead of Summerhayes and Coulson,

The battle for fourth came home several seconds down the road, Budd, Hunt and Deviny completing the Those ominous clouds leaderboard, with Sanderson were hovering to make track not far behind these after conditions tricky, but that another good run in the didn’t deter Davies who led top half. a new lap record too. With Deeth out of the picture, it was left to Summerhayes to lead the forlorn chase but still an impressive second all the same. Arguably, third-placed Howard may have been closer had he and Burge not collided with each other at the start, and he was bringing the gap down to Summerhayes each lap before he ran out of laps. Green always seems to go well at Oulton and he came away with a welcome fourth ahead of Burge in fifth, then Warburton sixth. That left Coulson a lap down after his delayed start, along with Burrows a lap down too.

A healthy 30 cars graced the Se7en entry in its 40th Anniversary season, 26 starting and only five dropping by the wayside in 12 laps. Max Hunter won what was arguably the spectators’ race of the day, nipping past poleman Andrew Deviny on the last lap to win by 0.796s, and the top five covered by just 1.981s in the order of Paul Thompson, Geoff Letts and Niven Burge, the latter setting the quickest lap. Kane Astin completed the top six, with the likes of Paul Clark, Damon Astin, Graeme Davis, Paul Spark, Anthony Towey, Steve Baker, Darren Thomas, Tristen Knight

In the Miglias, Tim Sims proved the quickest of 20 starters, also leaving it late to take victory after starting the last lap in fourth, ahead of James Hall (in the Baldwin car) and Bill Sollis, while poleman Kelly

20 Year here were s Ago four visits to the 1.952-mile Snetterton circuit, with round 4-of-12 of the Unipart-DCM National Challenge coming on 2 June at the BRSCC-hosted ‘Rover Race Day’. In the Se7ens’ race, Phil Manser benefitted from a red flag at 9 laps, edging Dave Percival on countback by 0.27s, with Shaun King, Matt Hayman, Rob Selby and Steve Bell all within a whisker! Polesitter Rob Cullum had to settle for seventh and a new lap record, but was still ahead of established frontrunners Dave Braggins, Tim Sims, James Hayman and Dave Banwell among the 30-car grid. laps and gave Stewart Drake victory once early leader Peter Baldwin’s gearlever broke, the winner however having started from pole and set a lap record. Richard Wager and Jonathan Lloyd entertained with a dingdong battle for second, ahead of Myk Cable, Steve Young and Gordon Pocock. Joining Baldwin on the DNF list were Bill Sollis and Ian Curley, seven of the 22 starters dropping out. The ninth round on 1 September was a BRSCC ‘OneMake Raceday’. The 21-car Miglia grid went first and over 10 laps champion-elect Drake again took victory, by now driving with great confidence to demote both Sollis and Curley to the lesser podium

positions, the latter lowering the lap record to 1:23.59. Chris Lewis was right on their tails, then came Wayne Grayer and Lloyd to complete the top half dozen. Baldwin had been on pole but retired, as did Mike Jackson, while Cable was excluded for a black flag infringement. With the meeting behind schedule the Se7ens only got 8 laps, but that was plenty of time for another cracking affair, champion-to-be Manser just nicking it with a last lap draft past Selby (new lap record of 1:31.67) to hang on by 0.10s, and Percival, King, Tim Sims and Matt Hayman right in their shadows. The 28 starters also included Banwell, Mark Sims, Tim Stanbridge and

n the 15-round unsponsored National Challenge, just the one visit on 13 April, for the BARC-hosted third round. A relatively small 14 cars contested the 20th Anniversary 850cc Se7ens race, won by Steve Mole by a comfortable 4.8s once poleman Gary Hall dropped out from the lead with engine woes, likewise champion-elect Chris Tyrrell. The leaderboard was completed by Peter Kavanagh in second from Graham Penn in third, Derek Miller, Ralph Budd and Ron Phillips, with Alan Jackson and Bill Sollis further back. Graeme Davis and Tina Cooper were among the non-starters. Perhaps the biggest talking point however was newcomer Nicholas ScottFell who misread the starting procedure and proceeded to

race from last on the grid on the warm-up lap, realising his error as he sped onto the starting straight with cars pulling up in front, then attempting to drive back down the grid as the starter dropped the flag! That was his only appearance… A three-way dice for the lead in the 1-litre Miglias had the crowd rapt, pole position man Chris Lewis finally grabbing the 10 points ahead of brother, Jonathan and eventual champion Russell Grady, the latter with a new fastest lap on the 1.917-mile circuit. Filling out the top places some way back were Graham Chivers, John Bailey and David Morris, while also in the 18-car entry were cousins Keith and Peter Calver, Richard Colburn, Gerald Dale and Myk Cable.

n the first season of huge Leyland Cars backing, no less than 11 races took place on the 1.917-mile layout, two apiece for the three 18-round National Challenges, a trio of TEAC (Southern) Mini 7 rounds and a pair of non-points invites. BL’s headline act, the 1275 GTs went first on 28 March (BRSCC) for their opening round. On the support bill to the monster Shellsport Formula 5000 series, 14 cars took the start and after 10 laps it was reigning Miglia champion Alan Curnow who took the win by 1 sec ahead of poleman Glyn Swift, and eventual champion Roger Saunders in third, followed by Malcolm Leggate, Terry Harmer (on-theroad winner of the very first Formula Mini-7 race in 1966, but

The southern-based Mini 7 series run by the Thames Estuary Automobile Club (TEAC for short) had its second round on 9 May, the 19-car entry led after 12 laps by Jim Mancey from Bob Addison and Martin Moorhead, all three sharing the fastest lap too! A week later on the 16 May (BARC) saw the Mini 850s/ Se7ens appear for round 5 of the Nationals, the entry big enough to warrant a final and consolation. In the main race, polesitter Addison dropped out, leaving Chris Tyrrell to gradually pull away by 10.8s after 8 laps, although second placed Terry Pudwell matched Tyrrell’s lap record of 1:28.6. podium spot ahead of Hugo Shipley and Martins Goodall and Moorhead. Five non-qualifiers joined the Forward Trust 1000 Special Saloon grid, David Lapworth the leading 850 in 11th overall from Derek Hawkins and (Mrs) Denny Hulford. There were no points on offer for BARC’s Mini 7 invite race on 13 June, 1972 champion Reg Armstrong leading an 8-car field all the way from pole position, Hawkins and Gus Bost the next pair along. A BRSCC-run meeting on 27 June was National round 8 for the Mini 1000s/Miglias, and in record-breaking summer temperatures it was obviously too much for several cars which wilted in the heat. This didn’t deter Mike Curnow who finished the 10 laps with a whopping 19 secs gap to next along, Geoff Robson. Third went to Phil Spurling ahead of David Abbott, Eric Groves and Peter Morris, while Derek May’s fine pole position start ended with clutch failure. John Hazell had been in a strong second before he too dropped out, but had the consolation of sharing fastest lap with Curnow. A second non-championship bash on 4 July came courtesy of the Romford Enthusiasts’ Car Club, and drew half a dozen Minis to the special saloon grid. Andy Devine’s 1000 was second

Norman Finn (he of Fastest Lap trophy title) was fourth, while also among the 20 starters was the late Frank Gillibrand, whom the current-day ‘Original Spirit of the M7RC’ award is named after. The BRSCC hosted round 13 of the National 850 Challenge on 30 August, for 10 laps on the BBC Radio 1-supported meeting. Champion-elect Graham Wenham scored a narrow 0.2s victory over Julian Cutler in absolutely soaking conditions, so much so that points leader up until then Chris Tyrrell (having been automatically placed on pole due to a shortage of timekeepers) fell right down to the tail of the 24 starters after a muddy off. Out of nine cars, Paul Taft dominated the 10-lap GT race, leading from pole and setting fastest lap on his way to a 23 secs victory. Mike Curnow went one better than his brother to win the Mini 1000s (and ultimately the title), but by a tiny margin of just 0.4s from Steve Harris, the latter setting off from pole and recording fastest lap in a fantastic lead-swapping duel that lasted all race. Title challenger Ian Briggs completed the podium ahead of May, Groves and Rick Cutting. The penultimate TEAC Mini 7 round drew 20 starters for 12 laps on 31 October, Addison taking victory to help secure the title, with Vanson and Fisher joining him on the winner’s rostrum.
