After last year’s toe-in-the-water visit, the M7RC returns to the former home of the Dutch GP, set amid rolling sand dunes on the North Sea coast. While the Challenge titles might already be decided, on paper at least, the finale action is expected to be no less hard fought in both categories MINI SE7EN + S-CLASS With eight wins from 14 rounds this season, Ashley Davies has more than fulfilled the promise Quick Links

race on track when mechanical problems may have derailed their campaign. The battle for the remaining top numbers next season looks to be between onetime champion Max Hunter, and Spencer Wanstall, and the latter may have a slight advantage having raced to a podium finish here in 2015. Hunter was only a spectator in Holland on that occasion, but has won twice this season. Another podium visitor at last year’s race was Kieren McDonald, and his recent debut victory at Snetterton will surely put him among the class favourites this time around. Likewise, three-time former champion Andrew Deviny knows

how to win, but will be hoping to finish the season on a high after a somewhat disappointing run of form. Others in the entry who might be expected to challenge for the lead include Charlie Budd and Darren Thomas, while Graeme Davis was racing Se7ens before many of his rivals were born, likewise 1993 champion Tina Cooper, and Dick Hunter (father of Max) who is driving a borrowed car in the Invitation category. Look out too for the S-Class champion-elect, Josh Collins, who is also in the race for the Novice title against fellow newcomers Leon Window and Dom Burger. Expect a cracker!

However, the Cambridgeshire youngster has not raced here before so expect the likes of 2015 and 2014 champions respectively, Kane Astin and Rupert Deeth to be right in the mix with the added experience of knowing their way round from last season’s visit. Deeth lies second on points too, but Quick Links
will also have one eye on third placed Sam Summerhayes, who could overtake him in the standings. Equally, James Coulson, Rob Howard and Aaron Smith can all sneak into the top three overall, and the latter took both Miglia victories here last season. Also in the entry is veteran campaigner Tony Le May, while Pieter Van Cleemputte makes the relatively short trip from Belgium

Chairman’s chat W hen Zandvoort is mentioned, I always think of that tragic accident during the Dutch Grand Prix in 1973 when Roger Williamson lost his life in his March, even after the brave attempts to save Roger’s life by his F1 driving friend David Purley. The section of circuit where this happened has now gone. This brings it home, that the sport we love is dangerous. Driving standards are even more important when considering the possible consequences!
I hope you have all seen the notification on our website of our Annual General Meeting and Technical discussion on November 13th at our normal venue, namely The Chiltern Hotel in Luton. Ever since I have been a member of the Mini Se7en Racing Club, approximately 28 years.... I have not know a year where as many bulletins have been issued. Some bulletins have been of an informative nature, but many have clarifying various aspects of our regulations. To make our regulations 100% crystal clear is an ambition I have had for many years. The Technical Sub Committee has been useful in this respect. With an input from all members, I would like to think 2017 will be year where there will be no need for technical questions. Maybe this will be a topic for discussion at the AGM. So please send in your proposals and any nominations for Committee positions. One new Committee position that we are hoping to fill in 2017, is that of a
Quick Links
Mini 7 S class drivers’ rep. A topic of concern following the round at Snetterton was the mixed grid. Colin did try to change this, but with zero success. It does raise the topic of mixed grids in the future. This is something that nobody wants, but with the Miglia grids typically around 13 cars, race organisers will ‘naturally’ combine the formulae. The invitation class and the Miglia S class has not really worked, but the Committee have decided to boost the number of cars on the Miglia grid but introducing the Mini Libre formula. Ideally more Miglias is what we want!. The Mini Libre formula is still being finalised, but in principal the cars must look like classic Minis, use front and rear subframes, must use an A series block etc. We will even allow Clubman fronted cars, Mini Vans/ Estates and Riley Elf / Wolseley Hornets. The main difference

will be that there will be a Championship for the Mini Libre formula. This is still early days, but this is the Committee’s feelings at the moment. Yet again, food for thought for the AGM. Finally the Awards evening has been set for 21st January at the same location ~ The Stratford Manor Hotel, Stratford Upon Avon. www.qhotels. co.uk/our-locations/stratfordmanor/. I personally think the location and evening works very well, although we are making every effort to reduce the time taken for the presentations. Any suggestions on how to achieve this are always welcome. See you at Zandvoort

ENTHUSIASM DAMPENED
Arr
SE7EN & MIGLIA: RACE 1 iving in Norfolk for the penultimate rounds of the 2016 Challenge, one could be forgiven for thinking it was a Winter clubbie such was the grey, wet and miserable conditions. This general malaise didn’t really lift all day either in the Mini paddock, having been shifted well away from the main hardstanding zone - the headline Truck Racing filled most of this bit - to the outer grassy areas of the Snetterton infield. The grids were to be mixed too, for the second time this season after the Brands GP circuit back in April, and what it highlighted was the 2-to-1 split of Se7ens to Miglias, in fact 25-to-11 respectively, and one of the latter was Invitation class. Qualifying was a revelation Quick Links

for Miglia points leader, Shayne Deegan, posting a time no less than 5.076s quicker than next up, James Coulson, with Tristen Knight and Rupert Deeth on row two. The race was even more of a runaway for the #50 car, Deegan opening up a ridiculously huge margin of just under 44 secs in just 8 laps! Thankfully the battle for second injected a spark of warmth into the day, Coulson, Aaron Smith and Knight swapping places throughout. Dan Wheeler had been in the mix too until the wet track got the better of him on lap six exiting Murrays’ chicane, the closely following Dave Drew unable to avoid broadsiding him into retirement with damaged steering, the latter continuing but falling behind

the Invitation-spec car of Damon Astin. Deeth had hoped to mount a serious challenge to the leader, but a lap five coming together with Niven Burge at Nelson saw both of them playing catch up thereafter, the pair sandwiching Rob Howard to finish in seventh-to-ninth places respectively. Sam Summerhayes’ slim title hopes were effectively over after struggling around a lap down mired among the Se7ens, seemingly one of many drivers hampered by ‘wooden’ wet tyres. Fastest lap went to Deegan, over 4 secs quicker than anyone else. In the numerically stronger Se7ens category, series leader Ashley Davies took a leaf out of Deegan’s book by comfortably securing pole • Archive • Contacts

Pit & Paddock position by over 2 secs from Andrew Deviny, with title rival Lewis Selby back in fourth alongside Kieren McDonald. Max Hunter wasn’t entered so his title challenge was effectively out of the window. Starting 30 secs behind the Miglias, the Se7ens encounter soon became a two-horse race, with Davies being shadowed by Deviny without the latter ever looking likely to get on terms, the gap over 12 secs at the flag, and the pair of them the only unlapped 1-litre cars. The third-place dice was much closer however, and in another impressive performance in his first Mini racing season, Tom Sanderson held on to the final podium position from Charlie Budd and Selby on an increasingly greasy surface. This trio dropped Spencer Wanstall and McDonald to fight over sixth spot, with Dom Burger (in an ex-Paul Spark car) the best of the Novices in eighth, then newcomer Nick
Croydon-Fowler in the Ian/ Lee Briscall (another ex-Spark) car just squeezing out Graeme Davis for ninth. Julian Proctor finished all on his own in 11th, Quick Links

then came Leon Window ahead of the first of the S-Class cars, driven by Josh Collins, kept company by James Cuthbertson in only his second race meeting. A little further back came Steve Trench, a few lengths clear of second S-Class, Andy Dickinson. The trio of Nathan Burge, James Bull (S-Class) and Steve Baker all had lurid moments on their way to completing the top 18 points scorers, while Tim Stanbridge admitted he was ‘all over the place’, again due to old tyres, to lead home the remaining 2-pointers, Kelvin Edgar (S-Class), David Robinson, Julian Affleck and Simon Martin (both S-Class), the latter 2 laps down after a steady run in only his second ever appearance. Worthy of an extra mention is Edgar, who had repaired his car after its mighty rollover at the Brands GP meeting back in the spring. Good effort fella! Meanwhile Tina Cooper had high hopes for a good

SE7EN & MIGLIA: RACE 2 t a difference a day makes, and Sunday was like your average Meditteranean climate, certainly warm enough to banish the damp chill from creaky bones. The huge crowds tempted along for the Truck racing helped boost the egos too! At the head of the field, Deegan sat on pole by a large margin, Coulson again in second with Wheeler and Smith lining up behind. This time however, and with a 2-lap safety car period added in for a crash among the Se7ens, Deegan was to be kept in check the whole way as Deeth stormed through from row three to hound him Quick Links

to within 0.275s at the flag, the latter having dialled in his car’s sweet spot for a blistering new lap record of 2:12.348, over 1 sec quicker than his own previous record set in 2015. The squabble behind the lead pair was however just as enthralling, Smith eventually securing himself a doublethird for the weekend, barely a sneeze between him and Astin, with Wheeler, Howard, Drew, Knight, Summerhayes and Coulson all within a giraffe’s kick of each other, the only casualty being Niv Burge who pulled way off onto the grassy infield of the twisty bit on lap seven. Despite his impressive Se7en class win from pole the day before, Davies’ hopes for a double were

tempered by having to start at the back of the grid with no second qualifying lap on the timesheets, leaving Deviny and Selby to head the category from McDonald and Sanderson. With the Miglias on their way 30 sec up the road, the Se7ens barrelled into Riches for the first time and a big cloud of dust could be seen rising on the exit. The Safety Car was immediately deployed for a car off into the barriers on the outside, that of Budd which had taken a big hit, and for two laps the field was bunched up awaiting the green-to-go. On the restart Davies had already rocketed up to the top 10, including the fastest lap, before a driveshaft then gave out on lap 5, • Archive • Contacts

Pit & Paddock followed onto the DNF list within a lap by both Deviny and Selby from the leading battle. This left the quartet of McDonald, Sanderson, Davis and Wanstall to haggle over top spot, and after coming so close on occasion, it was McDonald who held his nerve to open up a small breathing space to the flag and take a well-deserved first victory. Sanderson managed to improve on his third from the day before with second, holding off Davis and Wanstall on the dash to the line after some terrific dicing, while Nath Burge and Stanbridge’s cars were transformed in the dry to complete the leaderboard. Baker finished right on their tails but he was docked 10 secs for a false start and dropped to ninth in class behind the closely matched pair of Cooper and Collins, the latter underlining his S-Class title with win number eight of the season. The next pairing were Trench and Proctor, both happy to finish in one piece, whereas CroydonFowler’s race had been more ‘involved’, being spun down the order after contact with Window but recovering in the slightly battered black car to just pip the two yellow examples of Affleck (S-Class) and Cuthbertson’s for 12th. Robinson felt he was still down on power in his machine, but had enough pace to stay in front of the close S-Class trio of Bull, Edgar and Dickinson, then Burger trailing in with Quick Links

damage incurred when he spun near the end and was collected by Window who went no further. Finally, Martin completed 7 laps to make it four finishes from four starts in his debut season. Post-race, it seemed almost half the drivers were queueing outside the Clerk of the Course office for various ‘incidents’, including a few reported ‘overtaking under yellow flags’ which resulted in several verbal warnings but due to ‘mitigating circumstances’ no actual changes to the results, while more seriously, the opening lap crash that abruptly ended Budd’s afternoon, resulted in Selby being penalised with a 3-point endorsement on his racing licence, and a 3-place grid penalty for the next race… So, with just two rounds to go, at Zandvoort in Holland, all three titles have been mathematically won, although

As the M7RC prepares to head to Zandvoort in Holland, we recap some races over the decades held a little bit further away from the more usual venues…

he magnificent Spa-Francorchamps 2006 10 Years in Belgium had Ago already been on the calendar for most of the previous decade, and this time around on 2-4 June it was a double-header counting as rounds 4+5 out of 12 in the National Challenge. A decent 34 cars in total made the trip to the Ardennes circuit, and in the opening 6-lap encounter on the Saturday afternoon a somewhat bruising last lap saw four of the top Miglia runners failing to reach the flag, Kelly Rogers and James Hall eliminated in a hefty crash on the climb towards Kemmel, also closing Colin Peacock. Third went involving Tim Sims, and then to Ralph Saunders who was poleman Bill Sollis and Peter naturally ecstatic on the podium! Sunday morning’s encounter was missing both Rogers and Baldwin, and in another last lap sort out, Tim Sims and Hall spun each other out of the lead at the Bus Stop, allowing polesitter Sollis though into what he admitted was probably “the luckiest win”
of his career, although he had set an even quicker lap record (2:59.224) than Sims’ the day before, with again Peacock right on his tail across the line. Hall and Sims recovered to third and fourth ahead of Mark Sims and Saunders, while familiar
names also in the starting line-up included Tony Le May and Phil Harvey. In another captivating Se7ens thrash, Geoff Letts again got himself into a winning position when it mattered, but this time opening up a relatively big, by Mini standards, 2.951s gap to cross the line ahead of Thompson, then Max Hunter in third by dint of hugging the inside line out of the hairpin to thwart polesitter Andrew Deviny’s last gasp effort. Clark went well to fifth, very well in fact as he lowered the lap record further to 3:13.408, with teammate Graeme Davis taking sixth. Also among the field a decade ago were Dick Hunter, Paul Spark, Ian Deviny, Damon Astin, James Coulson and Steven Hopper. 2006 – Race 1 Miglia podium Photo: M7RC Archive (Pitlane)

or the M7RC’s third visit on the trot to Spa, the meeting was shuffled back to 2729 September, and became the penultimate event of the 12-round National Challenge. A grand total of 37 cars made the trip, with only Steve Young’s Miglia failing to take the start. In damp conditions initially Ian Curley led the way, but as the track began to dry it soon became apparent that the dry tyre gamble of pole position man Bill Sollis and veteran Peter Baldwin had paid off, the pair of them gradually easing away from the rest on wets, and after eight laps Sollis just got the nod by 0.821s, having also navigated backmarkers on the run up to the final few corners! The Irish Mini 7 fraternity however appeared on occasions at Mondello Park, Phoenix Park and on the streets of Ballyjamesduff.

hough no passport may have been required, the M7RC ventured over a national border three times that year to take in the compact delights of the 1.0-mile circuit at Llandow in South Wales. The first of these came on 11 April for round 3-of-18 in Leyland’s headline 1275 GT Challenge. The 15-lapper looked set to be a Paul Taft walkover until a front wheel parted company – the second time it had happened to him. Terry Attoe then took over in front before clanging into the Armco, leaving Alan Curnow to inherit the victory, ahead of Malc Leggate, Glyn Swift, Roger Saunders, Jim Burrows and, in the Shellsport Celebrity car, rally legend Tony Pond. Going the extra mile 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago out at a dizzying 86.54mph, shared between Briggs and Groves, but not a lap record… The 850 race boiled down to a terrific three-way fight between Terry Pudwell, Chris Tyrrell and Graham Wenham, daylight only appearing between the cars near the end. Fourth place Graham Child was gaining on Wenham at the finish while Tony Styles and Hugo Cutler scrapped over fifth a
few lengths further back. Tyrrell’s 43.6s fastest lap (82.57mph) equalled that of Danny Boulton’s record set in 1972. The Mini 850s were back again on 26 Septenber for their 16th National round, and on this occasion Pudwell eventually took the win in a restarted race, and then only after Wenham’s challenge ended with engine problems. The first start was red
flagged when Tyrrell collected the already crashed machine of Derek Hawkins, both cars erupting in flames and Tyrrell carted off to hospital with shock and minor cuts. Tony Styles took up the chase in second, ahead of Child, Ron Cuthbert, Graham Larrington and Martin Goodall. Once more the 43.6s lap record was equalled, this time by Pudwell and Wenham.
