ington Park in Leicestershire has been a regular fixture on the Challenge trail in recent seasons, and this year’s meeting sees a return to a double-header format for both classes. And, as the penultimate weekend of the National campaign, there will be a lot riding on the outcome of these races before the Mini circus heads off to Croft in North Yorkshire for the finals next month…

National Mini Se7en Challenge completed, the race for the 1.0-litre title is shaping up to be a real humdinger! After 10 rounds, reigning Champion Andrew Deviny looks to have a clear lead of 34 points from nearest challenger, Darren Thomas, but with only the best 11 scores to count from the scheduled 14 on the calendar, dropped scores will invariably come into play after Donington. Thomas has had two retirements so far, whereas Deviny has a 100% finishing record, so potentially the

Pit & Paddock August 2014 Issue 5 latter has the bigger scores to drop… Waiting in the wings for any slip-ups from the title leaders is Graeme Davis, the longtime campaigner who scored his first National victory last time out at Oulton Park, 30 years after his first race in the category! Regular finishes in the top-six have elevated Kieren McDonald and Leon Wightman to outside bet contenders, and Wightman was the man on a charge last time out with a tigering drive from midpack to second behind Davis. Of the rest, fast Welsh youngster Ashley Davies has been unlucky not to take more than just a single win at Brands Hatch back in May,

while in the milder-tuned S-Class, honours have swung back and forth between leading novice, Shaun Tarlton, and seasoned campaigner, Ian Deviny. Last time here, for the opening round of 2013, the race was a head-to-head between Paul Spark and Max Hunter, which Spark won, and he could well be a factor if he enters, having only raced at Thruxton this season. Either way, predicting the outcome of both races is as difficult as always… that’s the beauty of Mini Se7en, there is never really a dead cert, which is why it has remained such an enduring formula for half a century!

MINI MIGLIA the Mini Se7en title chase is close, then the competition among the bigger-engined 1.3-litre siblings is even tighter! Having won both Oulton races last time out and taken his winning tally to four for the season, Rupert Deeth has sneaked ahead by six points from previous leader Kane Astin who has three victories. Twice winner Dan Wheeler is just three points behind Astin but has an exclusion counting against him after a collision at Oulton with the other race winner this season, Aaron Smith, although that exclusion may be subject to an MSA inquiry… Sitting just behind the leading trio, on points, and as they have done on-track for much of this season are Colin Peacock, Tony Le May and Rob Howard, and any of these three are potential race winners at Donington. Howard’s form has dramatically improved thanks to the preparation input of 2011 Champion, Endaf Owens, while others who could mount a podium challenge include James Coulson and Dave Drew. With two races at 10 laps apiece expect to see some dramatic,

Mini Se7en News MACMILLAN DONATION

In memory of Graham Edwards, the Mini Se7en Racing Club has made a donation of £406.84 to the charity. The cancer charity sent this letter back in response which we would like to share with you all.

BRIAN JONES Sad news reached the M7RC recently of the passing of Brian Jones at the age of 67. Very much a dedicated racing enthusiast and proud longtime M7RC supporter, Brian competed in several Mini Miglia races in the late 1980s and early 1990s, his best result being an eighth place at Silverstone in the 1987 Southern Mini Miglia Series. Brian’s self-built ‘Jones Mini’ - also known as ‘Gumdrop’ - always carried #17 and was invariably powered by a Manx-tuned engine, as were many of the other Miglia racers that Brian either helped build or run on a regular basis, including those of Peter Allen, Dave and Trevor Hancock, Alan Whittington, Owen Hall and Mike Fry. After he finished racing in 1992, Brian and his son Robin built an early 90’s-spec 1000cc Miglia which they used to take out for a bit of fun on-track over the last few years. Brian’s funeral took place at Oxford Crematorium in early June, and to Brian’s family and friends, the M7RC wishes to pass on its deepest sympathies for their sad loss.

A great start for all the Minis saw them keep their positions into the first corner. The top five of Deviny, Davis, Thomas, Ashley Davies and Gareth Hunt made a break for it leaving Kieren McDonald to lead the following pack. Lap two saw Davis and Thomas battle for second into the Island Hill bends, as they reappeared at Hill tops Davis still had his place. Davis also had a very sideways moment at Knickerbrook Corner provoking some fantastic driving from Thomas and Davies to avoid him. Davies used the confusion to try and get past Thomas but was fended off. Elsewhere Steve Trench had a problem and pulled off. Further back there was a great battle between Ian Deviny and Tarlton for seventh and eighth but Deviny kept the place. Lots of trying but no passing was the story of the last lap with Deviny taking the win and the fastest lap. Thomas was second, Davis third, Hunt fourth, Wightman fifth. A delve into the M7RC Archive helps us to recap what happened over the decades at Donington Park around this time of year.

n the 23/24 October weekend, the Leicestershire track played host to the finals of a somewhat shorter than usual best-8-scores-from 10-rounds Unipart-backed National Challenge. The outcome of the Mini Se7en title went right down to the wire and four drivers were in with a shout. The 15-lapper on a damp-to-dry track resulted in victory, and the title, for James Hall, making him the third family member to do so after dad, Steve (1978) and uncle, Gary (1981). However, starting from pole position and setting the fastest lap, he almost lost out after some robust driving tactics which saw 10 Years Ago

the Tandy brothers, Nick and the late Joe, heavily reprimanded, the latter dropping to fourth in the rankings as a result. The other title contenders, Max Hunter and Dave Banwell came third and fourth, headed home by Paul Thompson, with Geoff Letts and James Hayman completing the top six. Familiar names today among the 28 qualifiers were Graeme Davis, Gareth Hunt, Steven Hopper, Malcolm Keat and Paul Spark, with Paul Clark and Damon Astin on the retirements list, and Kane Astin non-starting in Tommo’s spare car. Despite retiring early on in the race from pole position, Peter Baldwin had already secured the Dunlop Miglia title (his fourth

in five years) and so it was left to runnerup for the second season running, Kelly Rogers, to head home reigning triple Mini Se7en Champion Tim Sims, by a scant half-a second, the latter also setting fastest lap. Colin Peacock and Mark Sims battled over the remaining podium position, with Ralph ‘Pitstop’ Saunders and Sarah Munns next of the 11 finishers from 20 qualifiers. Joining Baldwin on the retirement list were Mike Jackson and Phil Harvey, while Bill Sollis, Ian Gunn and Mark Chandler all went out in the same accident.

he longer GP circuit catered for the huge RoverSport/Unipart-DCM entry, round six of 12, which was held over the weekend of 25/26 June, and was part of the BRDC-run ‘Best of British’ motorsport calendar, including Formula 3. In the Mini Se7ens, Dave Braggins took the win by just over a second from 1989 Champion, Steve Cooper, having a part-season in the 1993 title-winning car of sister, Tina, and setting fastest lap in it. Third was Kelly Rogers ahead of pole-sitter Phil Manser, Shaun King and Neil Johnson, while Championelect Ian Curley was back in ninth behind Tim Stanbridge

and Genny Cooke. Nonfinishers included, Mark Sims, Mike Jackson and the late Steve Bell. In all, 22 finished from the maximum 32-car grid, with half a dozen reserves not even getting a start. The 32-car Mini Miglia entry was whittled down to 27 starters of which 20 finished. Heading them at the end of 10 laps was that year’s Champion Chris Lewis (his third of five titles), comfortably clear of fellow Champions Bill Sollis and Owen Hall, with Tony Hobbs, Mick Best and Ian Scott next up, while other former/future Miglia champions in the field included Myk Cable, Andy Hack, Stewart Drake and polesitter Ian Gunn who set the fastest lap before dropping out.

here were a brace of meetings in a busy Mini Silver Jubilee Challenge, the first of which was on 30 June hosted by the venerable British Motor Racing Marshals’ Club (BMRMC). Having taken his first 850cc Mini Se7en National title in 1983, Chris Gould underlined his Champion status with his fifth win in a row, starting from pole position and setting the fastest race lap at 1:36.4. Colin Rodger had been closest in practice and so it was in the race, albeit he was nearly seven seconds behind at the flag after 10 laps. The battle for third saw the closest action, with up to nine cars fighting it out, and Russell Grady stealing away near the end ahead of Barbara Cowell, Gary Hall and Ben Dutson. Of the 27 starters, 20 survived to the end, while the one non-starter was current M7RC Ambassador, Mike Jackson. The battle for 1000cc Mini Miglia honours was pretty much a threeway affair, as it was in the title chase, 30 Years Ago

Donington Park: 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago with Champion-elect Mike Fry comfortably in front from pole position on this occasion to win his third race of the year, ahead of reigning Champ’ Chris Lewis who set the fastest lap (1:29.0) during his recovery drive after sliding wide early on, and Jim McDougall settling for the ‘bronze’. In fourth a little way behind came Gerald Dale, followed by Dave Hancock and Danny Allpress enjoying a great tussle for fifth. A couple of months later on 25/26 August, the Donington Racing Club co-hosted a round of the European Formula 2 Championship (incidentally won overall by Kiwi, Mike Thackwell, at one time the youngest driver to start a GP), and on the supporting bill for this prestigious event were Mini Se7ens and Miglias… Unsurprisingly there was huge entry, bolstered by several of the Irish Mini Se7en drivers bringing their cars over too! Indeed, Irish Champion Dick Smyth finished a creditable third in the main Mini Se7en encounter (round 11 of

For Gould it was an incredible eighth win in a row, and once again he secured pole position and fastest lap in a dominant title-retaining season. Future Champion, Russell Grady showed his growing stature by shadowing Gould all the way in second. In all, 18 cars finished the 10-lap race from a full grid, leaving enough reserves from the 40+ entry for a consolation event, won overall by the reserve Miglia of Brian Brady. Dave Banwell was first Mini Se7en home, in third, in this 8-lapper. Meanwhile, the 10-lap Miglia race (round 12 of 16*) saw

another win for Mike Fry but this time by a scant 0.27 secs from Jim McDougall who had beaten Chris Lewis and Fry to pole in qualifying, and to the fastest lap in the race, with Gerald Dale again best of the rest after Lewis had dropped out of the running, along with familiar Mini racing names, Richard Wager and Bryan Slark. Rounding out the leading 1.0-litre frontrunners were Peter Calver, Ian Gunn and Danny Allpress. There were 36 entries, 27 of whom started and 18 finished.
