Hello and

Welcome...

... to our annual magazine! This is our 3rd publication in as many years and if I do say so myself, this one is our best yet. We decided to create a magazine to give our readers over the Christmas week something beautiful to enjoy, whilst also allowing ourselves some much needed time off. We also wanted to find a way to celebrate the eighth year of Love My Dress and so this magazine is packed full of some of my personal favourite weddings from 2017. Eight years! I have to pinch myself to believe it sometimes. I started Love My Dress in November 2009 and back then, it was nothing more than a hobby project. I had not the faintest idea at the time how it would develop and create a whole new career path - that eight years on, I’d be sat here earning a living from a job I love and adore and working to support many wonderful, creative and talented wedding suppliers - individuals and businesses who inspire me every day. It is such a dream come true, even if I rarely get chance to step back and appreciate it as much as I should.

It fills me with joy to see such diversity in the weddings we share on Love My Dress. As our community of loyal blog readers and social media followers has grown, so has the scope and breadth of our content. In the introduction to last year’s magazine, I talked about how we’re expanding our content through our ‘From the Heart’ series. From the Heart became a huge success and has enabled us to explore more about life and love and focus on our passion for storytelling. It was such a success in fact, that this year, we took a bigger, bolder step forward and launched our own FRONT COVER CREDITS lifestyle blog, the response to which in the short space of time PHOTOGRAPHER BRIDE’S HAIR that has passed since it’s 10th S6 Photography ACCESSORIES December launch, has blown us Etsy DRESS + VEIL all away entirely. You can read Catherine Deane GROOMS SUIT more about A Life Loved® on ASOS BRIDE’S SHOES pages 16 - 19. Aldo 2

Our writing team has expanded this year, we now have six writers producing our real wedding features. Each of them hold a passion for storytelling and weddings and takes the greatest of care to produce each feature with sensitivity. Your weddings really could not be in better hands. If you would like to submit your own wedding to Love My Dress, take a look at our submissions page. Social media has continued to have a huge impact on how we connect and interact with our blog community throughout 2017 and we’re constantly working to ensure we’re a step ahead of the changes and challenges and ever-changing algorithms. We’ve also seen our Instagram account grow and flourish this year. As I write this, we are nearing 100K followers - an achievement that has been a true labour of love. I’m proud of our Instagram feed - we only ever share content that you will find on our blog, or that supports our wonderful family of advertisers - those people who enable and make Love My Dress possible at all. This authenticity is at the heart of everything about

Love My Dress. We’ve never strived to have the most or be the best for the sake of it, I take much greater pleasure in focusing on realness, and promoting genuine content that completely reflects what we’re all about.

FAMILY IS EVERYTHING I think without any doubt, the biggest change for me personally this year has been the introduction of my much-loved younger sister, Camilla, into our team. My sister leaves a 15 year career as a teacher in social sciences to join us, and our blog community is all the richer for the passion and experience she brings with her. Camilla has already shared a number of excellent and thought provoking features for our new blog A Life Loved - you can read them here. Love My Dress truly has become a family business, and of this, I feel immensely proud. Which leads me on to a final thank you, for the team behind this much loved wedding blog - all of whom I adore and owe so much to for their loyalty and for working so hard to make Love My Dress so beautiful - and all of whom you can find out about on this page, with one important exception that is. My husband, Philip - the unseen force behind my daily energy levels and ability to commit so much time and love to the job I adore and blog that I love with all of my heart. Philip inspires me more than anyone I know. He is kind hearted and patient. He has an insatiable curiosity for the natural world and possesses an encyclopedic style knowledge of all things flora and fauna. He’s also the most talented pattern cutter and dressmaker and has taught me everything that I know about bridal fashion! Kind of helps to have a husband who loves a good frock as much as I do ;) Whilst we are business as well as life partners, I feel so lucky that I get to work with my husband in a creative capacity at Love My Dress, producing brand campaigns and content for the blog, as well as partnering on strategy and long term goals. If it wasn’t for he, this blog would not exist and at this time of year, when burnout is real and we’re all feeling the need to stop and reflect and recharge, I want to thank my husband from the bottom of my heart for his endless commitment, support and encouragement and for enabling Love My Dress to thrive.

Wishing you all a wonderful, love and joy-filled Christmas. All my love and best wishes for a happy, healthy 2018.

For some years now, I’ve had a niggling feeling that we should and could be doing more through Love My Dress to help connect people and create community. There is, after all, a huge and loyal following behind Love My Dress - blog visitors who are drawn to the warmth and realness of the blog, individuals who are keen to make genuine connections with like-minded others. It is for this reason that we set up a closed-Facebook group in 2016 - an action that changed everything for Love My Dress. So many people will tell you that ‘Facebook is dead’, but I beg to differ. Used in the right way, Facebook can play a pivotal role in nurturing 16

L OV E M Y D RES S - C HRIS TM AS 201 7

online community. Our closed Facebook group was an enormous success from the off and has thrived throughout 2017. But the content was naturally very wedding focused. And for those readers who were already married and still craving the support of the community (of which there were/are many), that presented an issue. Where could they go to still hang out online and support one another in a space that was mostly free of wedding talk, and allowed them to expand their conversation and explore all kinds of other life issues? We knew, as early as the start of last year, that we wanted to create a lifestyle blog to facilitate this community and in October 2016, we took the first, secret steps to making this happen - registering the domain name ‘alifeloved.com’ and applying for trademark protection status.

In February 2017, we announced our upcoming new lifestyle blog with the creation of a new Facebook page. Just like our closed Facebook community for Love My Dress, this new space was an instant success and thrived from the off. It wasn’t long before online friendships were spilling over into real life, and meet-ups across the country were being organised. The group felt safe, secure, and all manner of life issues were being raised; trying for a baby, buying a house, coping with difficult family members, processing grief, career changes, pursuing life goals, dealing with illness everything and anything was popping up, including how to find the perfect pair of kitchen scissors! All the while, my team and I were busy behind the scenes developing the blog that would

become the heart of this community and finally, after weeks of planning and tweaking, on 10th December, we hit the ‘go live’ button and unveiled A Life Loved to the world. As I write this piece, it has been 11 days since we went live and in that short space of time, the blog has amassed almost 300 comments and thousands of unique visitors and page hits. A sign, I hope, that the blog will thrive and be as successful as both Love My Dress and our Facebook communities are. I’ve struggled with the term ‘lifestyle blog’ and so feel I need to clarify that my hope is for A Life Loved to be a lifestyle blog with a difference and a strong focus on storytelling.. Through storytelling, I wish to help make and facilitate human connections. I want to share

stories of joy and success and achievement alongside stories of struggle and vulnerability. I want our readers to ‘feel’ and be inspired, to have their views and opinions challenged. I want to never be afraid to tackle the more taboo subjects with absolute honesty and authenticity. I want to focus on diversity and mental health as much as I want to focus on those amazing home renovations and fancy frocks and fashion and beauty pieces. I dream that A Life Loved will be a place that encourages and motivates readers into taking risks. I wish to produce content that will help build confidence and offer empathy and trust and support. I want anyone who visits A Life Loved to feel they have found their tribe and to experience a sense of affinity – a warmth, a familiarity, comfort.

I am absolutely determined to create a different kind of lifestyle blog that respects and supports both women and men from all walks of life and today, as you read this, I would like to invite you to join us at the start of this exciting journey. We’ve received so many wonderful comments since the launch of our new blog, but this one, for me, stands out the most...

“I live in a tenement building in Edinburgh city centre, I have lived here for ten years and yet I know only a handful of my neighbours. I grew up in the countryside in central Scotland. Community in its most traditional sense is not necessarily something I have experienced, save perhaps my university years. My husband grew up in a village where you could walk into the pub on your own and know everyone already in it; no need to plan and assemble a group of friends for a night out. Part of me always envied his experience of just being able to turn up and have support, chat and friendship waiting. In their own, very tangible way, that’s what these groups have done for me. Love My Dress saved my sanity on more than one occasion during wedding planning, whether it be inspiration, advice or the ability to vent when bridesmaids or husband were driving me batty. Part of its original appeal for 18

L OV E M Y D RES S - C HRIS TM AS 201 7

me was the ability to seek unbiased, objective advice from a group of supportive but diverse, considered and highly intelligent strangers. However, a number of these women are now my actual friends, fondly referred to as my ‘internet friends’ so that my family can place them. We have laughed, cried, vented and drank together. In a city where many leave after university, where work opens doors in other places and many of my closest friends are now far from local, A Life Loved and Love My Dress have provided me with the community and network that I now realise I was missing. In a world where we turn to the internet for shopping, directions, advice and love, it is perhaps not all that surprising that we have found community. Thank you Annabel and team, the blog is fab and I know the girls of ALL and LMD will rally behind it.” — Emma Badzmirowski I am beyond excited about what the future has in store for A Life Loved and very much hope that it will become a space that you can draw support and inspiration from yourself.

HAVING A WEDDING GIFT LIST IS A NO-BRAINER, SO WHAT’S STOPPING YOU? Prezola is the UK’s favourite wedding gift list. They’re known for being stylish, on-trend and the most flexible wedding registry where you can have everything you want, all on one list (and it’s free too!).

If you’re thinking: Gift lists are too traditional The rule book has officially been thrown out the window and you can add whatever you like to your gift list. Have all of your favourite brands, furniture, experiences, honeymoon funds and even donations to your favourite charity. Mix traditional brands such as Vera Wang, Wedgwood and Le Creuset with modern brands including GoPro, Fitbit and Crosley - and if there’s something you want that isn’t on Prezola, they can add it for you!

Amazing choice With over 50,000 gifts from 500 major brands to choose from, your dream home is just a click away. Unlike traditional department stores, Prezola has all the best brands in one place including The White Company, KitchenAid, Smeg, Made.com, Oliver Bonas and many more! Plus Prezola has 200 exclusive brands that can’t be found with any other gift list including Sofa.com, Soho Home, Habitat, Graham & Green, Mr & Mrs Smith and more.

If you’re thinking: We already live together and don’t need anything Many couples now live together so gifting is less about setting up home and more about upgrading to luxe items that you’ve always wanted. If you’re not into wedding china heirlooms, think about fun gifts you’ll keep forever like wall prints or cocktail sets. These days, it’s all about choosing presents that reflect your personality and as long as it’s important to you or helps you on your way, guests will love to help.

If you’re thinking: I don’t feel right about asking for gifts... It’s time to get over the registry guilt. Your wedding gift list is a once-in-a-lifetime mega wish list for your dream home - who can say no to that? But if asking friends and family for stylish china or the latest candy-coloured KitchenAid mixer makes you feel uneasy, it shouldn’t.

Group gifting Benefit from group gifting where multiple guests can contribute an amount of their choice to a gift and work together to get what you want. Say goodbye to registry guilt and get the luxury items you really want without the price tag. There’s no limits, no minimum spend - guests simply pay any amount that they’d like to contribute. Easy!

Guests love wedding registries as it makes life easy for them when choosing a gift you really want and will actually use. Don’t forget many of your guests are expecting to get you a present for your big day, so you’re actually doing them a favour by choosing things you’ll enjoy. Guests will want to buy a gift that reminds you of them instantly, so add imaginative items such as prints or ornaments that reflect your personality. Registries are a great way to add investment heirloom gifts to cherish for years to come.

PREZOL A TOP TIP: ADD A RANGE OF PRODUCTS WITH VA R Y I N G P R I C E P O I N T S SO GUESTS DON’T FEEL PRESSURED TO SPEND A LOT

If you’re thinking: I don’t want any hassle for my guests Prezola makes it simple for guests with free standard delivery and if you’re opting for guests to bring envelopes with cash on the day, it’s actually quite risky. There’s countless stories of money being lost, stolen or even finding cheques made out to the wrong name - nightmare! With Prezola, your money is insured and you get 100% of the cash transferred to your bank account.

WEDDING PLANNING TIPS FROM A PRO Michelle Kelly, sought after wedding planner and founder of Pocketful of Dreams has been planning weddings all across England and Europe since 2010. Her expertise lies in orchestrating authentic weddings and stylish celebrations, filled with personal touches and considered details.

Here she shares a few of her top tips... Think budget first, plans second

Always consider the practicalities

Without one it’s like shopping and not looking at price tags – you’re going to get a shock at some point. So save yourself the heartache and work it out first. Then start to plan.

You must have a rain plan, don’t just pray it won’t happen.

Mood-boards are your best friend

Work with the style of the location, if it’s a country estate with Georgian details and you want a sleek and minimal design, there’s going to be a disconnect. It is possible to blend design aesthetics but it takes expert design skill to do it well.

Create a storyboard with images, fabrics, print samples and paint swatches. This will help you to visualize and sense-check ideas, as well as communicate your vision to suppliers.

Engage the senses Walk through your day as a guest. What will they see, hear and experience? Find ways to heighten their senses through food, drink, florals, even scent. Choose ambient lighting, layer tactile textures and pick sounds that will set the right party vibe.

5 8 L OV E M Y D RES S - C HRIS TM AS 201 7

Consider the setting

Don’t overcrowd You want your guests to have the very best experience and being cramped into a too small space will inhibit this. Whatever number your venue tells you fits comfortably, reduce it by 10-15%.

David Jenkins (facing page) Helena Marie (this page)

Don’t sweat the small stuff Ensure you have all your planning done and dusted at least 6-8 weeks before your wedding. Give yourself buffer time to focus on you and shift your focus from wedding planning to getting married.

Get supported If you have no clue where to start, or you have ideas but don’t know how to bring them together cohesively then don’t think you have to go it alone. An experienced wedding planner and designer can guide and advise you every step of the way, allowing you to focus on all the aspects you love and feel excited about, handing over the rest for someone else to deal with.

Make it personal Don’t just follow the Pinterest crowd, create a wedding that’s one-of-a-kind and fully expressive of your own style sensibilities. A good designer will help to draw out your story and find ways of telling it through compelling and considered details.

Think beyond the centerpiece Bring the outdoors in and create true wow-factor with floral installations all around. Oversized, loose and deconstructed florals create such a romantic feel. Think rambling florals creeping up staircases, hedgerow aisle runners, undulating garlands and unexpected ceremony backdrops.

Craft magical moments We once printed the words of our couple’s favourite song so guests could sing along at their ceremony, at another a New-Orleans style procession led everyone down a candlelit path from dining to dancefloor. Think about ways to wow your guests and make your day truly standout.

THE RETURN OF

WEDDING DAY GLAMOUR

E

mma Horn, a fashion and commercial stylist has always had a love of weddings and in particular the whole wedding dress style. Through her job as a stylist she had never had the opportunity to style a wedding shoot. So when moving from London to Bath and meeting the famous award-winning couture wedding dress boutique owner Carina Baverstock of Carina Baverstock Couture, and the super talented photographer James Hacker she knew she would soon get her chance. This season, with designers celebrating a return to glamour and luxury, Emma was excited about shooting a story which was all about dressing up. Hacker, an established wedding and commercial photographer in Bristol, was tired of seeing the same style of wedding shoot. For example, bride in a field with floaty dress or a bride photographed in a barn with bunting and wild flowers. These styles of photoshoot have their place but Hacker wanted to break that mould and do something different. Selecting the most glamorous samples from Carina,

64 L OV E M Y D RES S - C HRIS TM AS 201 7

Emma and Hacker wanted to make sure they showed the dresses off to their best. Rather than shoot on location they used a studio, shooting against a clean white and grey backdrop to allow the dresses and accessories to be the stars of the show. Hair stylist Abigail Constanza and make-up artist Lisa Caldognetto were on set for the shoot - which took place on one of the hottest days this summer in a basement studio, so they had their work cut out. Two strong, assertive models – Nia and Kate, were booked through Ginger Snaps. The models were encouraged to show off their confidence and strength in the images while at the same time allowing their beauty to shine. Emma explains: “We were so excited to photograph dresses from some of the UK leading designers but we didn’t want whimsical and wafty. We wanted our brides to be totally in charge and self-assured, to embody modern day glamour. Working with such beautiful and exquisitely made couture dresses was a real honour and pleasure.” Hacker tells us: “By working in the studio we could really concentrate on the lighting, getting the right camera

angles, the perfect way the model moved and their emotions. We were able to create different hair and make-up looks to suit each dress and Emma spent time styling the whole look, by choosing just the right pieces of jewellery, shoes, hair accessories and flowers to bring the whole look together.” It was important the models didn’t do their usual bride faces and stands, so they were asked to jump around, shout, laugh, be angry, give lots of attitude to shake up the usual bridal serene vibe. The models found this funny and at first couldn’t work it out, but soon they completely got into the swing of things and found their inner bite.

5.

To compliment the quality and class of the dresses Emma needed to find jewellery and hair accessories of the same calibre, so she approached Hermione Harbutt who has shops in Chelsea and Bristol. Hermione jumped at the chance to be part of the shoot and all her exquisitely made pieces of fresh water pearls and Swarovski crystals looked stunning. Coming from both a costume and styling background Emma wanted to add some drama and interest to the images so called in some beautiful stoles by Blanche in the Brambles. A bit of fur and feather always add to the wow factor. The net veil worn by the model Kate in the Stewart Parvin dress ‘Blue Moon’, was from a new Bristol based veil designer, Rebecca Anne Designs.

“IT WAS IMPORTANT THE MODELS DIDN’T DO THEIR USUAL BRIDE FACES AND STANDS, SO THEY WERE ASKED TO JUMP AROUND, SHOUT, LAUGH, BE ANGRY, GIVE LOTS OF ATTITUDE TO SHAKE UP THE USUAL BRIDAL SERENE VIBE” As well as showcasing the established frontrunners in the wedding dress world, Emma wanted to champion the up and coming stars of the future. Shoes and bags came from Chanii B in Bath, a great boutique and online shoe shop selling quirky and unique but beautifully made bridal and designer shoes, boots and bags. Last but by no means least flowers were by Flowers by Passion, also based in Bath. Owner Johanne Wood, knew exactly what was needed after Emma showed her the shoot mood board. The bouquet was made up of a soft palette of seasonal flowers and put together in the relaxed but beautiful Flowers by Passion way.

BECAUSE YOUR WEDDING CEREMONY SHOULD BE TRULY YOURS... by Tamryn Lawrence of Wild & Oak

The term ‘wedding celebrant’ is one that you’re probably going to hear a lot more of over the coming year, even if you’re not quite sure what it means right now! You see, over the last decade or so, we’ve all become rather brilliant at personalising every aspect of our wedding days apart from the most important bit – the ceremony itself.

74

L OV E M Y D RES S - C HRIS TM AS 201 7

Now I know that you can choose your readings and choose your music but aside from that, the format of your ceremony has remained pretty much untouched for years. It’s true that more locations have become registered for ceremonies but there are still a whole heap of restrictions in place that could well stop you from having the style of ceremony that you want in a spot that means the world to you at a time that suits you best.

However, with a celebrant-led ceremony, you can absolutely throw that rulebook out of the window. If you want to hold your ceremony in a park, on the beach or in a meaningful location that’s not legally registered, you can. As the saying goes - any time, any place, anywhere. Now as great as that sounds, that’s not even the best bit. What makes a celebrant-led ceremony so very special is you. Instead of repeating standard words in a ceremony led by someone you might well not have ever met before, your wedding ceremony becomes totally and utterly yours when you work with a celebrant. When you work with a celebrant, your ceremony is extra special. Instead of a script drafted by government bureaucrats, someone who’s got to know you and your amazing, wonderful, personal story writes yours with care. You can include elements from various religions and cultures that are significant to you, you can involve

many people in many ways and if you’ve got children, pets, extra special friends or adored family members who are no longer with you, they can all be included and honoured in a way that works for you. Compare that with a ‘traditional’ ceremony where to become legally married, you need less than fifty words. Your history, your relationship, your hopes and dreams for the future don’t have a place in what should be the centrepiece of your wedding day. I can also promise you that your ceremony will still ‘feel’ like a wedding. We’re so conditioned to believe that weddings can only follow a certain pattern in certain places that it’s easy to think that anything else will somehow feel ‘wrong’ or ‘less’. But this is your day, your relationship and most importantly, it’s your love story. You do have the option to tell it in the way you want and when it’s such a unique and special thing, doesn’t it just deserve the most personal celebration ever? I’m very sure it does.

Wild & Oak officiate individual and personal wedding ceremonies in Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, London & beyond. Take a look at the website for more information or get in touch via wildandoak@gmail.com. All readers of Love My Dress receive a £50 discount on wedding ceremonies.

10 INGREDIENTS

FOR PLANNING AND CREATING A PERFECT WEDDING

I

f the Love My Dress 2017 Magazine is your introduction to the world of weddings and wedding planning, then perhaps a quick introduction is in order…

I’m Katrina, a wedding planner, co-founder of Coco & Kat and Planning Redefined and as a features writer, I’ve been providing wedding planning advice for Love My Dress readers since 2015. Over the years, I’ve covered everything from social media at weddings to transparency, honesty and clarity in the wedding industry. As an introduction to my planning series, I wanted to share with you some insider planning tips in the form of ten simple yet key ingredients for planning and creating a perfect wedding. 1. S E L E C T I N G T H E R I G H T V E N U E

1

Your venue sets the tone for your wedding day so as tempting as it may be, please don’t rush this decision. Be sure you’ve chosen the right venue, take time to check what’s available and, above all, make sure you’re comfortable and confident in your decision.

Actually, I feel like a bit of a fraud just saying that because the truth is, there’s no such thing as ‘perfect’. You see, everyone has their own individual take, style, preferences, requirements (you get the drift), especially when it comes to weddings, so imagining and saying that one style of wedding or one way of planning a wedding is perfect is just not right. The joy about modern weddings is that they can be whatever you want them to be and you can go about planning them however you want to – that’s what makes them so special. That said, there are definitely ten things that will help you perfect the planning process and make the actual day itself the perfect day for you:

IF YOU WANT TO, THROW OUT THE RULEBOOK, DITCH THE ELEMENTS THAT YOU DON’T LIKE OR DON’T SUIT 2. BEING ORGANISED

2 3

Reading terms and conditions, replying to emails, completing booking forms and managing admin definitely isn’t the sexiest part of planning a wedding but it’s essential. Get organised and stay organised! 3. MANAGING YOUR BUDGET

Again, keeping a record of your finances doesn’t sound overly exciting (unless you have a thing for Excel!) but managing your budget will ensure that you get through the planning process without any added worry or stress. 116 L OV E M Y D RES S - C HRIS TM AS 201 7

4. TA K I N G T I M E O U T

4

This is absolutely essential! Your wedding cannot and should not consume all your time. Yes, it takes time to plan a wedding, but it should not rule your life. Make sure that you take time out to do things for yourself and as a couple.

5 . TA K I N G I N S P I R AT I O N F R O M P I N T E R E S T

It’s incredibly easy and understandable to think that replicating a Pinterest board will simplify the planning process and allow you to create a pictureperfect wedding. However, please do remember that planning your wedding with Pinterest solely as your guide is not a great idea. Firstly, so many of those beautiful images aren’t from real weddings, they’re from styled shoots and secondly, also try to remember that although images may look pretty they may not be realistic, practical or achievable. Pinterest is a wonderful source of inspiration and it’s a great starting point, but it’s not and simply can’t be your step-by-step guide to a personal and individual wedding.

5

6 . F O C U S I N G O N W H AT G U E S T S W I L L NOTICE

As much as we think that our guests will notice absolutely everything; the truth is they won’t! What they will notice is the food, the drink and the party. These elements are without a doubt the most important things to get right because they’re the building blocks for a perfect wedding. Ignore these at your peril!

6

ASK FOR HELP, DELEGATE JOBS AND DON’T FEEL THAT YOU HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF

L OV E M Y D RE S S - C H R I S TM AS 20 17

117

7. I N J E C T I N G Y O U R P E R S O N A L I T Y A N D PERSONAL TOUCHES INTO YOUR WEDDING D AY

7

Nothing brings a wedding day alive quite like you so make sure that your day is full of things that represent you as a couple. It might be the entertainment, the theme, the food or the vibe of the whole day but make sure that your plans reflect you. 8. A S K I N G F O R H E L P

8

Planning a wedding can be tough, it can be tricky, and it can definitely be time-consuming. So, ask for help, delegate jobs and don’t feel that you have to do everything yourself.

9 . T H R O W I N G T H E R U L E B O O K AWAY

9

Just because something is ‘the done thing’ or ‘what’s expected’ doesn’t mean it automatically gets to be a part of your day. If you want to, throw out the rulebook, ditch the elements that you don’t like or don’t suit and be confident in your decisions.

10. E M B R A C I N G P E R F E C T I M P E R F E C T I O N

10

There will be hiccups. There will be issues and some things might go wrong along the way and on the day. This doesn’t stop your wedding being special and it doesn’t make it any less brilliant, memorable, romantic or spectacular. Let the imperfect things go and focus on the one thing that really is perfect – your marriage.
