Welcome to the third issue of Loving Local Magazine, and thank you so much for picking it up! We are incredibly grateful for the continued support and growing community of people with a love for local, and we can't wait to share this issue with you! As the weather warms, plants and florals bloom, and skies open up to vast blue a little more often, we are inspired to get outside. Join us as we venture to a couple of our favorite local places to explore, Chilliwack Lake and Othello Tunnels. As we bring you along, we hope you feel inspired to carve out time from your schedule to spend in the great outdoors! With the month of June, also comes Father’s Day, so we’ve curated a collection of images and articles with a masculine feel in appreciation of the countless men in our lives who prove to be amazing dads, daddies-to-be, or serving their world with the heart of a father. We are so grateful for each and every contributor, advertiser, and feature entrepreneur that made our vision come to life. This issue reflects something very close to our hearts, and that’s a continuous passion for adventure. We hope that as you turn the pages you enjoy the experience as much as we did creating it. Field House Brewing in Abbotsford opened a brewery and tasting room back in January 2016, and since then it has shown no signs of slowing down. With the craft beer industry booming - the Fraser Valley was in need of somewhere that brought the people and offerings of the community together. Between brewery owner Josh Vanderheide, Head Brewer Parker Reid and an ever growing staff, this group of individuals has created something in Abbotsford that has sparked a lot of buzz between the general public, craft beer lovers, and beyond. When Josh began thinking of opening a brewery he looked directly at the city of Abbotsford, what it’s core needs were and how those needs would be met. He wanted to generate a reason for people to leave their homes - to create a hub that the community could gather in that was both family friendly and showcasing what the neighbouring farms had to offer. Field House’s philosophy is simple - support local. Ultimately with the craft beer industry at an all time high, Vanderheide was drawn to the industries openness of supporting collaboration and cooperation, over competition. “It’s such a welcoming and supportive industry, everyone is there to help each other”. At the end of the day it’s all about having the beer speak for itself. Head Brewer Parker had the same approach in mind. A big inspiration for the beers at Field House come from Holland - back when both Josh and Parker took a trip in the early planning stages. The objective was to find traditional Dutch recipes that they could tap into, bring back, and put their own unique take on them. “It’s about creating flavours that work together - that are innovative and interesting”. As Parker stated it’s “about capturing the essence and being able to give our guests a familiar taste but with a unique twist, something surprising and inspirational”. Besides the beer, Fieldhouse has crafted a specific food menu to pair perfectly alongside them. The idea was to bring more local food/businesses into the brewery to showcase what the rest of the community had to offer. Head Chef Bonnie, had a passion to create basic and indulgent comfort foods while incorporating quality handmade locally sourced ingredients. “We wanted to make an impact, to move the community forward by the food we offer”. As Bonnie stated it simply came down to “what food do people want to eat while drinking their beer? Cheese and indulgent food”. Field House works and collaborates with other local businesses such as The Local Harvest, The Polly Fox Bakery, Old Hand Coffee, to give out the best end product. In addition to wanting to support local, for the staff “it’s about contributing to the community we want to build”. “The people are important to us, this place is the way it is because of them and what makes this place the best”, Vanderheide notes. “If it wasn’t for our community, the crew, customers, and craft beer fans, we wouldn’t be where we are today.” As one of the busiest joints locals flock to in Abbotsford, the unique experience you will take away from Field House is truly unlike anything else. Simply Delish Soup & Salad Meet Brad, and his line of delicious, easy to prepare meals Interview by Stephanie Klaver Photographed by Jennifer Audrey Photography For readers haven’t yet discovered Simply Delish Soup & Salads until now, tell us what your company is about. We strive to provide healthy, delicious and nutritious meals for busy families and people on the go. Our packages comfortably serve four people and meet many dietary needs (the entire product line is gluten free and vegan). All of our items are perfect for in your pantry or gifting and every product is handmade and tied in Langley BC. What inspired you and your wife to start this business? Eight years ago Mom and Dad started taking Mom's unique soup and salad recipes to the local Farmers markets and quickly Simply Delish Soup and Salad was born. The demand for the products was so great that my wife Chelsey and I came aboard to help at markets and events. From there we both started full time with the company and in September 2016 we purchased the company from Mom and Dad so that they could retire. What would you attribute your success to? There are so many factors that have contributed to our success. This has truly been a family run business and all of us have put in countless hours working as a team to make it happen. Lori Greiner put it best: "Entrepreneurs are willing to work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week." While many things have changed within the company Mom's recipes have been the glue that have held everything together. What is your favorite thing about running a business together? My favorite thing is spending more time with my kids and wife. Before Chelsey and I came on full time with Simply Delish I would leave for work at 5am and get home close to 3pm. Chelsey would have already left for an afternoon shift and we wouldn't see each other till 10pm that night. Once our son was born family time really became top priority. Simply Delish gave me the opportunity to spend way more time with my family and I am so thankful for that. What can we anticipate seeing from you in the next year? We have some exciting things in the works! We are starting a dessert line which will include all gluten free and vegan desserts in a bag. "Simply Delish Minis" will also be debuting. The minis are smaller portions and perfect for wedding favours. Also we are excited to be invited to Hollywood to be serving up our soups, salads and desserts to one hundred plus celebrities celebrating the 2017 prime time Emmy Awards. Keep an eye out for our newest edition to Simply Delish Soup and Salad, our new food trailer, where we hope to be serving up soup by the bowl. If you could give 3 pieces of advice to someone wanting to start their own business, what would they be? 1) Big is not necessarily better, a wise man once told us "Stay small, keep it all" 2) When you are starting out you will need to commit serious hours to hustling but once you've established yourself a bit make sure you take time to step back and create a work/life balance. You cannot work 24/7!! 3) Surround yourself with people who are "where" you want to be in the future. Work and collaborate with like-minded people who raise you up and be open minded to the new ideas and advice they provide. Tell us a little bit about your family. I have a beautiful, loving and supportive wife. We are celebrating our 9th anniversary this year. We are blessed to have two beautiful rambunctious kids who grew up at the markets with us. My son Pierce will be 6 in July and my daughter Dani-Marie turned 2 in March. Tell us one way you achieve (or try to achieve) work-life balance. Honestly, when you are self employed everyday is a mix of work and life... There are really no days "off" but we are good at finding time to play even if it's just a walk around fort langley or multiple breaks at our favorite coffee shop.

Wild Outdoors Club Meet Luke, and his outdoor inspired apparel Interview by Stephanie Klaver Photographed by Jennifer Audrey Photography Wild Outdoors club was launched in the summer of 2015 as a grassroots clothing brand, creating men's and women's apparel inspired by the great outdoors. With their roots planted in Chilliwack BC, surrounded by towering mountain peaks, forests, lakes and rivers, the brand draws much of it's creativity from adventuring in Chilliwack's 'big back yard' and finds it's voice in celebrating a life spent outdoors. With their core motto being "Its better outside," their collection of graphic apparel, headwear and accessories aims at promoting this message. We sat down with the founder of the brand, Luke Doell, a local graphic designer and outdoors enthusiast, who shared some of his background and inspiration with us. For readers who may not have discovered Wild Outdoors Club yet, tell us what your company is about and what inspired you to start the business? "I grew up playing in the forests of the Fraser Valley and going on family camping trips to the coast and the interior and just really fell in love with the 'wild' nature of BC at a young age. Going hiking, fishing, building tree forts, having camp fires... these are some of my favorite memories as a kid. And I think that's probably true for most people. That child-like sense of wonder and the desire to explore is something that we all start out with, but has the tendency to get lost as we grow up and get busier, and that's been a major part of what motivated me to start this brand. To use my creativity to connect people with the 'call of the wild' that I think we all have and that I see people really resonating with. Especially in the digital age. I think there's a real hunger to stay connected to the simple joys of spending time outdoors. The wild is where we go to find ourselves. The unknown is what drives us to keep exploring. Being surrounded by untamed nature makes us feel alive. So coupling that with my background as a graphic designer, my main focus with Wild Outdoors Club has been to use my products to express and encourage the connection we share with being outdoors and the designs and products I make are really a reflection of the inspiration I find daily in the wild." Tell us about the “club,� and how does one join? The 'club' aspect of the name was really about creating a sense of identity, based more on inclusivity than exclusivity. Enjoying the outdoors is for everyone! The name itself came about while out walking through a forest with a friend and talking about how outdoor adventures really connect people, and he just threw the name out like, 'Wild Outdoors Club - if you love the outdoors, you're a member!' And that is what the brand has really been based on. Promoting an idea that people can connect over. Building community around a zeal for exploring and venturing out into the wilderness. Wearing the apparel is intended as a way for those who hear the call of the wild to identify with and express that. What can we anticipate seeing from Wild Outdoors Club during the next year? In 2016, it was been awesome seeing the support of local retailers like Mt.Waddington's Outdoors and Spruce Collective in distributing the brand, as well as many other locally owned retailers across Western Canada, and I am excited to bring the brand to more communities this year, as well as releasing new apparel styles and graphics for the 2017 summer and fall collections. What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business? Whatever your business is, focus your early momentum on connecting with your local community and finding ways to work with other businesses and groups to grow. There is a lot of strength in joint initiatives and collaboration. People are drawn to synergy. We live in such a beautiful place, where is your favorite local spot to explore? There are a lot of amazing local places but our favorite is spending time on the Chilliwack /Vedder River. Whether it's fishing, kayaking, campfires or swimming, it is such a great place to adventure!

Explore Local | Othello Tunnels LOV ING L O CA L | 1 6

Othello Tunnels has been a favorite place for us to visit since before we had our children. There's something so majestic about the old train tunnels and bridges cutting through the massive rock walls and passing over the beautiful, rushing Coquihalla River. Located just east Hope, BC in the Coquihalla Provincial Park, these tunnels attract large groups of tourists during the summer months each year. We recommend visiting in June to take advantage of warming weather, ideal river levels, blooming greenery, and less traffic on the trails. The Othello Tunnels trail is a short, easy 3.5km return trail that navigates through five historic tunnels and over the winding, blue-green river below. Now, as a family with two toddlers, we usually make it to about tunnel two or three and are still able to experience each aspect that makes this trail a must-visit. If you choose to continue through all five tunnels, the trail extends along the Coquihalla River for quite a distance towards the town of Hope.
As our children, soon to be two and three years old, explore the rocky tunnels with their little flashlights, we know we're making family memories to be cherished. Pack a picnic lunch and make a full day of it. Located less than ten minutes west of Othello Tunnels, is Kawkawa Lake. Follow Othello Road until it meets Kawkawa Lake Road and find yourself among a breathtaking lake-side community. Fully equiped with boat docking, washroom facilities, playground, and a beautiful view, this is a perfect spot to enjoy a pit-stop. Here's a few things we recommend packing for your trip to Othello Tunnels: Flashlight (you don't need it, but it's fun to explore the tunnels with) Camera Picnic lunch Dress in layers (depending on weather, the tunnels can be quite cool)

Materials: • Sandpaper • Scissors • Alphabet Stickers • Shelter Chalk Paint (by Spruce Collective) • Paintbrush • Big and Small Wooden Garden Tools (You could also do a hammer, shovel or any other tool that your kid’s Dad would love)

1. Prep area for painting and sanding 2. Use a fine to medium sandpaper to take off any top coat and clean wooden tool ends 3. Once cleaned, brush off dust and apply your alphabet letters 4. Apply the letters very firmly. Make sure to push out any air bubbles and fill any ridges or cracks 5. Paint over the letters lightly with thin layers of paint. I started away from the letters after dipping the brush to allow for the least amount of paint on the brush when I hit the letters. 6. Paint 2-3 thin coats using furniture chalk paint. My favourite is Shelter by Spruce Collective. 7. Let dry 10. Use the sharp edge of your scissors to lift the letters off, remove all 11. Once removed fold over your sandpaper to make a point and brush off any paint that may have leaked underneath the letters 12. Tie them together and gift with a plant.

Raspberry Chocolate Pudding S'Mores Prep: 5 min | Cook time: 10 min | Serves 6 Author: Stephanie Klaver, Loving Local Ingredients 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup cocoa powder 1/4 constarch 1/2 tsp salt 4 cup milk 2 tbsp butter 2 tsp vanilla 12 graham crackers 6 Raspberry Marsh & Mallow marshmallows L O VING L OCA L  |   2 2
Directions 1. In a medium saucepan, whisk togther sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt 2. Whisk milk into the mixture and heat to boiling, stirring constantly 3. Once it has started to boil, continue to cook and stir for two minutes 4. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla 5. Trasnfer to 6, 125 ml. mason jars (optional to store for later or bring camping!) 6. Roast your Raspberry Marsh & Mallow marshmallow to your preference, and place ontop of pudding 7. Use graham crackers to scoop delicious-ness & enjoy!
