ISSUE 2 | MAY 2017
Loving Local began in June 2016, by husband and wife team, Stephanie and Randy Klaver. Both having an entrepreneurial spirit, they found themselves in the artisan community with their first business project together, “In a Jar.” Being makers themselves, they started connecting with other small shop owners and felt a tug in their hearts to help grow the shop local movement. With that spark, Loving Local caught flame during the planning of their first market, “Made in Chilliwack,” which took place in late June 2016. Since then, they’ve hosted a number of successful markets with vendor applications and shopper attendance numbers rising for each. They discovered a strong passion for serving their fellow small business owners and watching their businesses flourish. In addition to public markets and festivals, Loving Local is publishing this monthly magazine to provide a resource for all things local, all year. "Our goal is to create a collection of images and articles that would inspire you to live your life intentionally supporting your local community. The Fraser Valley is boasting with creative artisans, entrepreneurs, and professionals, and we’re very excited to shine a light on this talented community. This magazine isn't about the latest trends, what's hot this season, or what the celebrities are wearing; it's about people like you and me, supporting each other in business and in life. As you read and get to know the faces behind the brands, discover local gems, and places to explore - we hope that you enjoy the experience as much as we did creating it."

With May, comes Mother's Day, and what better time to appreciate the countless "mompreneurs" hustling their businesses while raising their children. These women are fierce, determined, resiliant, and brave. So whether you're a mama, mommy-to-be, or have the nurturing heart of a mother - This is for you. This issue has been a special one for us to put together and we couldn't have done it without our wonderful team, contributors, advertisers and most importantly featured mama hustlers. Tara Teng An Open Letter to Mothers Written by Tara Teng Photographed by Crystal Marie Sing Photograhy Dear Mama, I see you; pushing carts down the grocery aisle with the kids in tow. You corral your children with weary patience and answer to “mama, mama, mama” to no end. The days are long, the nights are short and if someone were to give you enough uninterrupted minutes in the day to drink a warm coffee or finish a hot shower, it just might be the best day of your life, because it’s the simple things that feel like a vacation now. Yet when the house is quiet and they’re tucked in bed, you sneak back into their room just to check if their lungs are still breathing and the sight of their sweet baby lashes takes your own breath away. You give of your time, of your body, of your heart and yet, if your child would ever ask for the shirt off your back, you would give that too… without even blinking, because they will always be your baby. And you will always fight to the ends of the earth and back for them. I see you. And I honour you today. And to the mother with empty arms, I see you too. Every month you try and try and try; yet every month you come up empty. Ballooned birthday parties and baby showers dig up the pain of a longing heart as you wait for the day when it will finally be your turn. Angel babies and monthly loss bring you to wonder if the Mother’s Day cards count you too; and they do, sweet mama. And then there are the women whom life brought no children, but still you mother on. You see mother, not only as a title but also as a verb, and you take the opportunity to mother and mentor others in your midst. Raising other women to go the distance, to shatter glass ceilings and conquer challenges with grace. Or maybe you don’t, because the pain is still too real, and that’s okay too, sweet mama. I pray that one day you will be able to pour out your mother’s heart upon your children but for now, know that mother’s heart you carry is the heart that the world needs. Because mothers are the balm that heals a weary soul. We need more women with the heart of a mother to carry us when we are broken, to celebrate us in our triumphs and to fight for a better world, investing in the future. So Happy Mother’s Day, Mothers. I see you for all that you are and no matter where along in the journey you are, I honour you today.

Dear Loves Co. Julie Shares Five Tips for Work-Life Balance Written by Julie Christine Photographed by Brittany Horner
I never expected my life to look like it does today: two kids, two businesses, and a love for blogging. When we had my first son, I had just started my photography business. It worked. I could work in the evenings and on weekends. I had routine and time. After having my second son, things were more challenging. I decided to take on clients a month after giving birth. Six months later, I decided to start another business on the side, DearLovesCo. If that was not enough, I couldn’t let go of my desire to blog. Pretty quickly, I realized something needed to change. Here are a few things I am discovering that are helping bring balance back to my life. 1. Be OK Saying “No” I love to say “yes” but learning to say “no” to the things that are not growing my business or creating income has made that much more time for family, friends and me-time. 2. Ask For Help We get childcare two days a week, for one or both our children. This time is precious. My productivity is a thousand time better and I feel refreshed and rejuvenated at the end of the day. 3. Unplug Recharge your phone away from your bed and find times through the day to put the phone away. This did wonders to my mental health and daily patience. So many things can impact us through social media, emails etc. Limiting my phone time has been life changing. changing. 4. Let Go For a long time I pressured myself to post and blog regularly and it drove me crazy. Finally I came to a place where I started to trust the process and do what I was capable of during this season of life. 5. Do What You Do Best Focus on what you do well and scrap the rest. Don’t feel like you need to be on every social media platform, or take on every collaboration. You will take the pressure off yourself and create better content for what you’re passionate about if you stick to your sweet spot.

A Little Love Creative Meet Kaitlin, and her nap-time creative hustle Interview by Stephanie Klaver Photographed by Warin Marie Photography
1. What inspired you to start “A Little Love Creative?” A Little Love Creative began shortly after my first daughter turned one. I had made some decor for her birthday party, and after getting some really nice compliments from friends, I decided to start a Facebook page to sell my crafts. My very first order - a hand lettered birthday board - came from someone I didn’t know. The fact that a complete stranger had found my page and asked me to make something for her son’s birthday really motivated me to keep going! Over the next few months, I narrowed my focus from general event decor to hand lettering because those were the projects I most enjoyed and felt the most inspired to create. 2. What is your favorite thing about running your own business? The absolute best part about running my own business (that still feels weird to say!) is being able to work from home around my family’s schedule. It’s busy, but I love knowing that I’ll never look back on these days and wish that I had spent more time with my girls while they were young. A close second-best would be the opportunities I’ve had to connect with so many other local makers and business owners. Being a part of this community is really empowering and a lot of fun! 3. If you could give 3 pieces of advice to someone wanting to start a creative business, what would it be? - Choose something you love to do and put your own spin on it. Even though you may create the same type of product as someone else, your business will stand out if you’re passionate about your own ideas and can develop a unique style. - Don’t be afraid to say no to projects that don’t fit with your vision. I found that once I became a bit more selective with the orders I was taking on, I had more time to work on growing my business through collaborations and networking events, and also had more time to experiment with new product ideas. - Focus on your own goals, and write them down. I make a list of things I want to accomplish each week; it really helps me stay on task, and it’s so rewarding to check things off of that list! 4. Tell us a little bit about your family I live in Maple Ridge with my husband, Jordan, and our two young daughters, Ainslea and Bria. We also have a dog, Finnegan, who is the fluffiest Golden Retriever you’ll ever meet. 5. What can we expect to see from you over the next year? More markets and more collaborations. I’m also teaching myself some new digital skills and putting them to use for a design idea I’ve had floating around in my head for a while now!

Isn't She Lovely Meet Sarah, and her vintage inspired girls wear Interview by Stephanie Klaver Photographed by Julie Christine Photography
1. What inspired you to start Isn’t She Lovely? I have always loved to create! Straight out of high shool I gained my University Degree with a Art & Design / Textiles Major but I took a career turn to work in Early Childhood Education. Fast forward a few years & Isn't She Lovely was born while on maternity leave with my son, and inspired from the little girls I had the pleasure of taking care of while running my infant/toddler daycare right here in Chilliwack. 2. Congratulations on celebrating your first year in business! If you could give one piece of advice to yourself one year ago, what would it be? Thank you! This time last year I was bruising with ideas (I still am!) and I knew how to sew, but that was about all. I had no idea how to market my business or how to use social media, I didn't even have a personal Instagram account... Believe me when I say I was clueless! I wish I had reached out more in the first few months to other makers in the community and had the confidence to ask more questions about how to get my products "out there." This first year has been a lot of trial and error, and a huge learning curve for me. 3. What is your favorite thing about running your business? Oh this is easy... Hands down my favourite thing about running this business is the relationships and friendships that have emerged over the year. Each and every day I am overwhelmed by the encouragement and support of the local small shop and handmade community right here in the Fraser Valley. I find it such an exciting community to be a part of, and to think that so many of these talented makers are also stay at home Moms, which is pretty cool too. 4. What do you find the most challenging? My biggest challenge is running out of time each day! I often feel like I am trying to cram an entire work day into my toddlers two hour nap window! 5. Tell us a little bit about your family I'm a wife to Chris, a Mom to Harrison, and we are expecting our baby girl any day! 6. What can we expect to see from you in the next year? This Spring/Summer is going to be a big year for Isn't She Lovely! I have just trained my third sewing assistant and we have so many darling creations and surprise fabrics coming your way! Lots more vintage rompers, a newborn collection and our "play all day" line featuring fun shorties, twirly skirts, dresses and tunics. And of course hair bows to match every outfit!

DIY | Donut Bird Feeders by Jenna Montroy of Chaos & Creative Blog
INSTRUCTION: 1. To make six large bird seed rings, start by greasing two donut pans with vegetable oil. 2. Bring one cup of water to a boil. When it is boiling, carefully transfer it to a large bowl. Empty three packets of gelatin into the water and stir until dissolved. Add five cups of bulky bird seed and stir until all of the seeds are coated in the gelatin mixture.
SUPPLIES: 1 cup of boiling water Three packets (3/4 oz. total) of unflavoured gelatin Five cups of bulky bird seed Twine or string for hanging. You will also need donut pans, vegetable oil to grease the pans, and binder clips to hold the pans together.
These make perfect gifts or activity to do together - Then go feed the birds!
3. Pile the seed up over the cavities of one greased donut pan. Use your fingers to both clear the hole in the center and to re-pile the seed on itself. You want to totally fill the second donut pan when you set it down like a lid over this first pan. 4. Align the top pan over the first pan and press down gently but firmly. Now set that top pan back down again and secure tightly with several binder clips. 5. Set this in the refrigerator for at least four hours, or overnight. 6. When you are ready to remove your rings from the pans, unclip the pans and use a gentle twisting motion to help the rings dislodge without damage. They will be messy, so use your fingers and/or a small pair of scissors to clean them up. 7. Let them sit on the counter and set up/dry up for a day or two more on cooling racks, flipping over several times to make sure all of the gelatin dries up. LOVIN G L OC AL  | 19
Explore Local | Sardis Park Written by Stephanie Klaver Photographed by Vanessa Marie Studios

Sardis Park is one of our favorite places to go for a quick outing as a family. The community-minded park is host to dozens of bird and waterfowl species, turtles, and occassionally you can even spot the resident beaver in the parks' feature pond. In addition to wildlife, you'll find plenty of treed picnic areas, two children's playgrounds, and a stroller/wheelchair accessible gravel trail surrounding it all. Located in the heart of Sardis, a growing neighbourhood in South Chilliwack, this park is home to many play dates, joggers, dog walkers, bird photographers, and even a public market during the Summer months. Entering the park from School Lane will bring you into a free parking lot, where you'll notice washroom facilities and an interpretive map are just steps away. As our children play freely in the fenced park, we can let them run wild and have a variety of activites at their little finger tips. The playground is always first, then running free in the grassy fields, pointing out exciting discoveries, and tossing pebbles into the pond; and then of course back to the playground! On this particular day, we brought some wild bird seed proving to be a sure way of befriending an adorable group of ducks. A few items we suggest bringing for a Spring time trip to Sardis Park:

A Local Gem | Tracycakes Bakery Café Written by Samantha Lenz Styled by Jenna Montroy Photographed by Olivia AnnPhotography
L O VING L OCA L | 2 2
"a space where people can come and gather around a table with family and friends while enjoying some delicious baked goods and have that feeling of being connected" Owner and manager Tracy Dueck, of Tracycakes Bakery Café always had a dream of bringing her passion for baking and cooking to the rest of her community. After marrying the love of her life and raising three children, this former stay-at-home mom had something else cooking up her sleeve. Back in 2006, Tracy decided to take a big leap of faith and opened the very first charming cafe known as Tracycakes Bakery Café. With no formal culinary training or credentials, this self-taught baker simply honed her ‘at-home’ skills into becoming the successful business owner she is today. Since opening its doors Dueck has made it her mission to create a space where people can come and gather around a table with family and friends while enjoying some delicious baked goods and have that feeling of being connected. It’s where the phones get put away and real conversations start happening. For Dueck it was about “passing the happiness down and bringing the warmth and comfort from home to my customers.” At the same time her main focus was “to make everyone feel like they matter, [that] they belong – and the cupcakes are a catalyst for that.” This quaint filled restaurant and bakery specializes in more than 60 varieties of signature cupcakes and scrumptious homemade foods. With classics such as Va-Va Vanilla, Smartie Pants, and Peppermint Patty, many of the other flavours are inspired by Dueck’s family. Each one of her kids (including their spouses) and grandkids have their own unique cupcake flavor. So, why cupcakes? Dueck believes that cupcakes are more than just a trend, they are “offering people a little taste of luxury, a treat to spoil themselves and indulge in.” Don’t be fooled though, Dueck’s bakeries and cafes offer more than just cupcakes. Tracycakes boasts an extensive dine-in menu; with items such as homemade soups and chilis, quiche, shepherd's pie, wraps, and sandwiches. Everything is baked fresh in Abbotsford and then transported to the Langley location daily. Tracycakes also offers “High Tea”, which features specialty looseleaf teas or coffee, fresh fruit, finger sandwiches, scones paired with lemon curd and Devonshire cream, among many other delicate offerings. Making it the perfect choice amongst customers. Ultimately Dueck wanted customers “to not only leave the cafe remembering the cakes, but remembering the conversations and
memories made with family, friends, and colleagues.” With a business that has been running for over a decade, it’s evident that this local gem has made a tasty impact on the Fraser Valley. A dream that has now been a flourishing reality, Dueck shows no signs of slowing down. With two locations, the help of daughters, Melissa and Jessica, alongside a dedicated staff, Dueck continues to offer a quaint destination, where guests are greeted with a warm welcome and a place to escape the everyday hustle and bustle of life while “indulging in a little piece of sugary heaven.” Whether it be pick-up, delivery, or eat-in, Tracycakes aims at catering to everyone’s needs; one cupcake at a time. They also host birthdays, graduations, bridal and baby showers, holiday and corporate events.
