The Big Egg Hunt at Liverpool ONE

The Big Egg Hunt was a plan hatched by Elephant Family and Action for Children for a recordbreaking egg hunt across Central London to raise money for these two eggshell-ent causes! Over 200 uniquely crafted eggs, created by leading artists, designers, architects and jewellers, will be hidden across the country in the lead up to Easter. The eggs will be on display throughout Liverpool ONE and the Albert Dock from 26th Feb – 5th March. Gather your family and friends and join the hunt, for a truly original and interactive eggsperience! With so many eggs to find, grab your zone map and get the clues that will test even the savviest of Sherlocks!

This new concert version of QUADROPHENIA, personally directed by Roger Daltrey, focuses on the original album and replaces the narrative used in previous stage versions with powerful imagery projected on an array of massive screens, designed to support, complement and propel the musical content of the work by setting it in the context of the history of the band. This is achieved to startling effect. “Quadrophenia and its coming-of-age story unfolded in songs that blended nuance and noise, a spectacle grand and gritty,” writes the Orlando Sentinel. The Who’s 8-date UK tour features founding members ROGER DALTREY and PETE TOWNSHEND, who will be joined by Zak Starkey (drums), Pino Palladino (bass), Simon Townshend (guitar/backing vocals), John Corey (keyboards), Loren Gold (keyboards/ backing vocals) and Frank Simes (musical director, keyboards/backing vocals). Tickets go on sale on Friday 1 February @ 9am. To book tickets log on to www.echoarena. com or call the Echo Arena Box Office on 0844 8000 400. Tickets are priced at £70/£65/60 subject to a booking / handling fee.

Glam – The Performance of Style

This Spring, Tate Liverpool presents the first critical evaluation of the Glam era of the 1970s, alongside the first UK retrospective of the realist painter Sylvia Sleigh (1916-2010). Glam, which emerged in the period 1971-5, was an extravagant pop style and sensibility which embraced high and low culture and played with identity and gender definitions. Glam! The Performance of Style uses Glam as a prism through which to view artistic developments in Europe and North America. Featured artists include Lynda Benglis, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Gilbert & George, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Derek Jarman, Sigmar Polke, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol. Welsh-born Sleigh worked in London before becoming an important part of New York’s feminist art scene in the 1960s and beyond. As a female painter during a period when a great emphasis was placed on abstraction and conceptual practice, she has been widely overlooked in the field of modern and contemporary art. Tate Liverpool’s exhibition of forty paintings and eleven works on paper is the largest of her work to date and seeks to bring her powerful work to a wider audience. Both exhibitions open on 8 February 2013 continuing until 3 May 2013 (Sleigh) and 12 May 2013 (Glam!). www.tate.org.uk

A successful change in philosophy is key to Toffee’s success... Everton’s fluid and often ruthless attacks have been a breath of fresh air for Toffee fans used to cheering a side typically labelled as ‘hard to break down’. Positive talk surrounding the Blues has mainly focused around their attacking threat, with the Baines/Pienaar inter-play and Mirallas’ creative inside forward runs in particular being flagged as factors in their forward threat. But also evident has been the uncharacteristic leaking of goals on a consistent basis. The ramifications of Everton’s more attacking focus, predominantly down the flanks, has left them exposed to counter-attacks. By shutting Swansea out in their recent 0-0 draw, Everton managed to keep a clean sheet for only the first time since September, an incredible statistic for a team currently sniffing around a European spot. Such a problem is manageable so long as the investment in an attacking strategy results in goals. And, from a fan’s perspective, a ‘score one more than you’ policy has the inclination to produce much more exciting games. This change in philosophy has worked so far for Everton, with the trust in their attacking prowess proving to be well found, and negating the problems of having a more exposed

defence. Their record shows just three losses so far this campaign, less than Chelsea and half as many as Tottenham. The key for Everton’s chances of qualifying for European football lies in their end product. For all of Everton’s swift build-up play, a ruthless composure in front of goal is where their shift in attacking philosophy will ultimately be successful or not. Everton’s goalless draw with Swansea was the perfect representation of how the absence of an end product unravels all of Everton’s attacking focus. Time and time again, Everton’s attacks were absorbed by Swansea, who managed to escape the match with a point due to the Toffee’s inability to convert their chances into goals. It is hard to criticise Jelavic, who repeatedly created space and chances for himself through his sharp movement and positioning.

That being said, without displaying the lethal finishing which had gained him widespread plaudits last season, his work was not backed up with a goal. This in turn led to another draw for Everton, a common conclusion to many of their other results where wins have been well within grasp. They have now registered into the double figures for number of games drawn this season, a statistic shared only by Stoke. But aside from dropping points in games they have dominated, Everton’s season has thus far been one to be proud of. Moyes has undoubtedly taken a risk with the team’s evident new attacking philosophy, but their current league position points at a successful gamble on his part. Aside from needing to put games they’ve dominated to bed to ensure a good season becomes a great one, the real test lies in the

11 fitness of Everton’s squad for the rest of the campaign. Without the comfort of a winter break, not only are the fitness levels of Everton’s starters tested, but so is the strength in depth of the entire squad, considering the inevitable niggles and knocks which have already plagued certain players in the team (Gibson and Mirralas to name two of the obvious cases). One position in which Everton could do with investing in during the January transfer window is at centre-back, after the not-so secret unhappiness of John Heitinga has become apparent over the past few weeks. Heitinga, who was voted Everton’s best player at the end of last season by Toffee supporters, has become disillusioned at Goodison, based upon

Moyes’ favoured centre-back partnership of Distin and Jagielka. If he does achieve the transfer he so reportedly wants, Everton could do with an established and experienced centre-back to offer a little more depth to Moyes’ centre-back options. Heitinga’s departure would open up the possibility for one of Everton’s younger players to be offered the opportunity to gain some Premier League experience should Jags or Distin suffer an injury. Twenty-one year old Shane Duffy has impressed in Everton’s reserve fixtures, but with the team’s new attacking mentality inviting a lot more pressure on their defence, such a decision could prove too much of an ask for a young and inexperienced player.

With Everton’s strong first half to this Premier League campaign, coupled with their tendency to finish season’s in impressive form, the Toffees currently hold the potential to push for at least a top six finish. If games are killed off when the potential is there to do so, Toffee fans such as myself could find themselves celebrating a job well done come May. LIAM NEWMAN || @liamanewman

Tranmere FC: Kicking up a fuss... Well here we are nearing the end of January and guess what? We’re still top of the league. This may change with this afternoons news that the weekends game has been called off due to a frozen pitch, but even so it’s a fantastic achievement. If the last time I wrote I came across like I couldn’t believe our luck to be in such a heady position then my position has changed somewhat. We deserve it, we’re a cracking dynamic side which has rode the injury of our best players of late by bringing in inspired youngsters and more crafty loan signings. Since we were thrashed

5-0 by Swindon (‘Swindle’ to every Tranmere fan, we’ll never forgive them for turning off their floodlights years ago when we were 2-0 up) we’ve put together a string of great results, despite having midfield maestro Wallace out injured on top of our other injuries and the end of Jake Cassidy’s loan period. The 3 vital Christmas games returned maximum points for the Super White Army, some of the results were ground out, others showed the great flair we’ve managed to muster up out of nowhere for this season. After a blip away at Coventry (we still should of coming away with

something by all accounts) our most important and satisfying win came last Saturday away in London. High flyers Brentford was a huge challenge but the lads rose to it and we came away with all 3 points and a feeling that this was the game which gives us all the hope we really can do this. We can go straight up, we can win the damn thing and the butterflies in every Tranmere fans stomach are kicking up a fuss like has not been felt for over 10 years. IAN PROWSE ||

TAKEIT TO THELIMIT

15

Guillem Balague is a Spanish football pundit and writer, who has become the recognisable face of La Liga reporting in the UK. Ranging from his work with a number of British papers to his regular appearances on numerous Sky Sports programmes (including Revista De La Liga and his recent Magic of Messi documentary) he is the ever present expert when it comes to the Spanish league. He has now written a biography on Pep Guardiola, Another Way of Winning, which explores one of Barcelona’s greatest ever managers, including his unprecedented haul of fourteen trophies during a remarkable four season tenure. I caught up with Guillem to discuss his new book, as well as his views on Messi, Mourinho and why football fans shouldn’t expect fireworks during the January transfer window.

I started writing it for about two months. Once you’ve got all the conversations that have taken place, then it’s just a matter of putting it altogether in a kind of always thinking, in my case anyway, that it is a novel rather than just a biography, with a bit of tension and creating an interesting character, including his strengths and weaknesses, his ying and yang. I don’t know if that came out in the book but that was my intention anyway.

WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN WRITING A BOOK ON PEP GUARDIOLA? I wrote a book on Liverpool called ‘A Season on the Brink’ and Orion who were the publishers had been looking for an idea to work on again together. I suggested some but they weren’t sure and then they came up with this idea of the Pep Guardiola book. I said ‘Yes but only if I can talk to him’ but knowing that he wasn’t talking to anybody. So that was the first challenge. But once he allowed me to talk to him and he opened the doors to the changing rooms and sent an e-mail to Ferguson to talk to me then it was a project I obviously wanted to be involved in.

THE BOOK OPENS WITH A FOREWORD FROM SIR ALEX FERGUSON, A MANAGER WHO SOME BELIEVE TO BE A CONTENDER FOR GREATEST OF ALL TIME. HOW DID THIS CONVERSATION COME ABOUT? I obviously wanted to speak with Sir Alex considering he had been in two Champions League finals in Barcelona and I sent an e-mail to Manchester United, who originally never replied. When talking to Pep I said ‘I’d love to talk to Sir Alex’ and he didn’t say anything at the time.

HOW LONG DID THE BIOGRAPHY TAKE YOU TO PUT TOGETHER? Twenty years! You don’t get to talk to Pep Guardiola or any of the players when they are not talking to anybody unless you have twenty years of a professional life which is respected and within which they can trust you. So in terms of how you get there, you don’t get there without those twenty years. In terms of the book I started in January last year and started doing interviews until May or so. Then

The next day I got a call from Ferguson’s secretary saying ‘Do you want to come to Manchester to talk to Sir Alex’ and I’m like ‘Yeah! What happened then?’ and it was because Pep had sent an e-mail saying to Ferguson to get in touch if he wanted to talk to me because he had been more than happy to do so. So I am eternally grateful to both for the opportunity. So I went to the meeting and I was delayed by 45 minutes! But he was in a very good mood. Apparantly everyone was late on that day, including his players because of a traffic problem. So we had

a 45 minute talk where it was pretty clear the admiration that Sir Alex had towards Pep. I’ve had interviews before with Ferguson and to me they were some of the best times of my career. The guy makes you feel so comfortable and nonchalant and he’s such a good talker that it really was a privilege. WOULD YOU RATE GUARDIOLA AMONGST THE GREATEST MANAGERS IN THE WORLD, OR DO YOU FEEL HE STILL HAS MORE TO PROVE WITH OTHER CLUBS FIRST? I don’t know if there are any other managers in the world who have got 14 titles after 19 months in charge. None. None in the history of the world. Not even close to that. Yes it was with one club but there’s the fact that Ferguson has been at Man Utd for 26 years having won things with Aberdeen. But had he only done the 26 years with Man Utd would people say ‘Ah but could he do it with a different team?’. It also seems to be a different analysis when it’s a manager outside of the Premier League. In the EPL, if you do really, really well you are considered one of the best in the world, but people like Messi as a player, or Guardiola as a manager, have to test themselves in the Romanian League or something to prove that they are the best. Pep has changed football. I wouldn’t enter the equation for who is the best in the world because I’m not interested in that but he has definitely changed football, in the same way that managers like (Louis) van Gaal, (Johan) Cruyff, (Rinus) Michels changed

LOWDOWN ON SPORT football. It means that you are on the olympus of football no doubt about it. WHERE DOES GUARDIOLA GO FROM HERE? Well, he will go to a club who can win things straightaway. He would want a squad with quality players who can win things but also to play the way that he wants. A club if he can in the Premier League. A club where he feels the infrastructure is right not to just win one year but to keep winning. There are not many clubs like that and everybody knows which clubs it could be. Everybody wants to know the name of the club but I can guarantee he hasn’t got anything agreed with anybody. We’ll just have to wait. TIMES SEEM VERY GOOD AT THE BARCELONA AT THE MOMENT, WITH THE TEAM STILL UNBEATEN IN THE LEAGUE AND MESSI MAKING WORLDWIDE HEADLINES AGAIN AFTER BREAKING THE GOALSCORING RECORD LAST YEAR. WOULD YOU AGREE WITH THE SUGGESTION THAT THEIR SUCCESS THUS FAR WITH VILANOVA IS BECAUSE HE HAS INHERITED A FANTASTIC SQUAD AND HAS BEEN MORE OF A CARETAKER TO THEM? I think the foundations were put there a long time ago but Guardiola took it to a whole new level. What Tito is doing is continuing that work. I think it was good that Guardiola left because they had got a little bit stuck. There was so much pressure on him and he had used as much of his own personal resources as he could. He was lacking energy and there were still some big decisions which needed to be taken. All in all it was best that they parted company and somebody else continued the job and Tito has done that. He has helped give Barcelona new levels but based on the foundations that Pep put into the team. BARCELONA HAS A NUMBER OF ONE-CLUB PLAYERS WITHIN THEIR TEAM. MESSI SIGNING A LENGTHY NEW CONTRACT, AND XAVI AND PUYOL RECENT SIGNED DEALS TO ENSURE THEY STAY AT THE NOU CAMP UNTIL THE END OF THEIR CAREERS. THE POSSIBILITY IS THAT BARCELONA MAY SOON BECOME A ONE-CLUB TEAM, WITH ALL PLAYERS RISING THROUGH LA MASIA AND STAYING WITH THE CLUB THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREER. DO YOU BELIEVE THIS IS POSSIBLE? I don’t think that has ever been the target but you can appreciate when it happens and you have to celebrate it. It was a dream put forward by Van Gaal where he said he’d like to win the Champions League with an all La Masia team. But I don’t think that was ever a target.

La Masia certainly adds DNA to the club and to the players which is important for many reasons. The style, the philosophy on the pitch but also because it continues a way of doing and behaving throughout the generations. But what players like Abidal, Keita or Alexis can add may not always be able to be found in La Masia. A brand of player like a tough centre back. Despite Puyol coming from La Masia, they are yet to find a homegrown replacement for him. It’s that mixture of what players from La Masia and outside of it can give you which has always been embraced so I don’t think that’s a target at all but it is definitely to be complimented. A MAIN TALKING POINT IN LA LIGA AT THE MOMENT COMES FROM ONE OF BARCELONA’S RIVALS, REAL MADRID, AND THE DRAMA BETWEEN JOSE MOURINHO AND SOME OF HIS PLAYERS. DO YOU THINK MOURINHO HAS EFFECTIVELY ENDED ANY CHANCE OF STAYING WITH THE CLUB FOR THE FUTURE? WHERE DO YOU SEE HIM GOING TO? I don’t think he wants to be manager for a long time anyway and its quite clear his management methods work and are effective but are rather out of date. He wants everybody at the club like the directors, the media, the players and staff to be on their toes constantly and under pressure. I think they’ve reached that point of no return where now it’s either change the squad or change the manager. They may stay together until the end of the season but after that it doesn’t make sense for the whole thing to continue. We’ll have to see where he goes. There’s going to be the inevitable domino effect at the end of the season so we’ll have to see. PSG is a possibility. Some people talk about Chelsea, or City or even Inter he might return to. It just depends on the results of each manager. WHO WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE PLAYERS GROWING UP? Gabino, former Betis and Espanyol. He was a lovely lovely player. A dribbler who was magic. Magic. And who also played for my team of course (Espanyol). And Zidane and Messi would of course be the other ones. You also recently presented ‘The Magic of Messi’ on Sky Sports, a look at Messi’s remarkable career so far, including a look at his record-breaking 2012. Is Messi the best player in the world today? Is he greatest of all time? He’s the best in the world and one thing that actually surprised us during that show was just how marvellous he actually is. I mean, we look at him every week and every week he seems

to break a record and we have to highlight each one. But putting it altogether was like ‘Oh my god! Come on!’. The man is like a joke. Some things that players don’t do in their entire career he has managed to do in twelve months. It was great from that point of view. And is he the best ever? Every era brings up that discussion I suppose, but what’s quite clear is that it has never been harder to be a top player, because teams are more physical and there are more tactics. But he has shown that he can consistently beat everybody, except for on the international stage. Now I don’t think anyone in the world has done that recently but there is an argument to be made that Maradona is the greatest. I think Maradona was more of a complete player than Messi is. Maradona had a 50 meter accurate pass which I don’t think Messi has, but maybe that is because he doesn’t need to have it. Both are electric in their pace but Maradona added more to it. We’re getting there though with Messi. It’s still early days and we should wait until the end of his career to decide but if there was to be one it would be between those two. AND FINALLY THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW HAS OPENED UP. DO YOU HAVE ANY PREDICTIONS FOR ANY BIG SIGNINGS YOU CAN SEE HAPPENING THIS MONTH? There’s not much money available. Big clubs have decided it’s not time to make changes. There will be a lot of big no’s. Villa won’t go. Negredo won’t go. There will just be smaller transfers this month I think. Club’s in La Liga like Espanyol or Betis may sell if bids come in because they need the money, but nothing will be major. LOWDOWN ON TRAVEL

THE MAN WHO SAW THEWORLD

19

Liverpool legend Graham Hughes is the anti Karl Pilkington. Having visited every country in the world without using a plane, and breaking a Guinness World Record in the process, Hughes reports back bursting with positivity. “There isn’t one country that I wouldn’t go back to.” Hughes became the first person in the world to visit each of the 201 countries in the world overland for what he dubbed The Odyssey Expedition. He did it in about as many weeks by foot, bus, taxi, train, ship or canoe; no planes, no helicopters and no hot-air balloons allowed. As well having a degree in History and Politics and a career in the Liverpool film and music industry under his belt, previous to his odyssey he had already done an extensive amount of travel, and is described in his bio as being “the guy who always says ‘yes’ and then worries about how he’s going to do it afterwards.” Which takes us to this journey. The question begging to be asked is: Why? Graham replies: “ I think the question should be why not?” In terms of the record, he said he just “emailed the records people and they said that it hadn’t been done before.” As for planning, “It was a case of going to Liverpool library and taking all the Lonely Planet books I could carry. Then I spent a very long night figuring out how I could get from one country to another without flying.” Graham spent most of his travel Couchsurfing, staying with local families as much as possible,

and catching public transport as per the record regulations. “It was 99.9% winged. The thing is, local people can help you get from A to B in any country in the world. The hardest ones to get to were the islands because I couldn’t swim.” Getting to an island also provided his most scary experience: “I took a leaky wooden canoe, known as a pirogue, against my better judgement from Senegal to Cape Verde islands. It took four days. It was leaky, there was no radio or sat phone. If a wave had hit us I would be dead. That’s gonna stick in my mind for a long time to come.” With a friendship circle wider than just about anyone on the planet he has nothing but good things to say about his travel experiences. “I’ve come out of this with a very positive message and feeling for the world. I haven’t been mugged, I didn’t get attacked. Maybe I’m just incredibly lucky but I didn’t even get ill the whole 4 years I was travelling. Everyone in America thinks you need a gun to protect yourself but you don’t; you just need a smile.” Graham is switched on to just about every issue on the planet, and will passionately discuss anything from the potential of harnessing tidal

power to the failings of the Liverpool transport system. The issue close to his heart that he chose to raise money for during his odyssey though was water – and specifically the charity Water Aid. “I believe that access to clean safe water should be a basic human right, it should be demanded of governments to give to people.” He highlights that billions in the world don’t have access to toilets, adding that the cause also suited him because: “It’s my sense of humour – toilet humour. And as a traveller I like a decent toilet! Squat toilets are just evil.” The other thing that Graham is extremely passionate about is his hometown. “I’ve been to every country in the world, and Liverpool is the best city in the world!” Follow Graham’s new blog about his journey to get his story to Hollywood here: www.dev-hell.com

THEGREATEST SHOWONEARTH

Cover bands often get a bad rap, but a tribute act can be much much more than the guy in the pub singing Wish You Were Here. Since a certain foursome put the city on the musical map, Liverpool has continued to produce an inordinate amount of talent in all facets of music, and tribute is no exception. The three hugely successful and spectacular shows opposite are Liverpool based, and feature some amazing talent from the city. As well as allowing longtime fans to relive some of their musical highlights, they also introduce some of the best music in history to an audience who were too young to catch it the first time around.

Rumours of Fleetwood Mac Rumours of Fleetwood Mac started accidentally 15 years ago, when the musicians involved were working on an entirely different project and upon listening back, noticed an uncanny resemblance to the Mac. They hit on the idea of forming a tribute act, and sent some tracks to Mick Fleetwood for approval. They got the official thumbs up and the rest, as they say, is history. Starting out at a time when the Bootleg Beatles and the Bjorn Again were hugely popular, and when Fleetwood Mac seemed to be gone forever, they proved to be a massive success. They endure today having played to over 550, 00 fans worldwide and are praised for their incredible show. It also seems that things have come full circle in that many young bands at the moment are citing the influence Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks has just announced her return to band. The current tour is a celebration of the 35th anniversary of the legendary ‘Rumours’ record, and bands line up features a mix of original members and hot young Liverpool musicians straight out of music school. See them in Liverpool on Friday February 15 at the Philharmonic Hall. www.rumoursfm.com

The Carpet Crawlers Brian Cummins is an established musician in his own right but he says decided to form the Carpet Crawlers when he realized that nothing he could write would move an audience in the way that Genesis classics could. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that he has a singing voice eerily similar to Peter Gabriel’s. Formed 8 years ago, the Carpet Crawlers have toured Europe and have perfected a show that includes meticulous lighting and sees Cummins playing drums and flute and well as singing the parts of both Phil Collins and Gabriel; including all of the costume changes that come with it. As Cummins said “The source material is just amazing. If we get close to recreating that, it’s already a fantastic show”. See the Carpet Crawlers on March 3 at the 02 Academy www.carpercrawlers.com

WOW: A Celebration of the Music and Artistry of Kate Bush As Kate Bush has famously only completed one tour during her 35 + year career, a majority of fans have never had the opportunity to see her live. Cue the WOW tribute show, which debuted in Liverpool last year to great success, and will now be touring the UK. The show hinges on the Dutch star of the show Maaike Breijman, who not only shares a distinct likeness but also a similar voice to a young Kate Bush. Breijman says that she has been told of the similarity from a young age but held off to pursue her own thing. She says “I’d been ignoring it for a long long time. After 15 years of people telling me I should do something with that, I thought well, OK!” The show sees Breijman singing and dancing in a vast array of costumes (“I’m a really fast changer!”), and supported by dancers, musicians and high production values. Unusually, with limited source material to work from, the WOW show will feature songs that Bush has never played lived. Breijman said: “We can really ask the question - what might she have done with it?” WOW will be at the Philharmonic Hall, February 22 www.wow-theshow.com

MARK WOMACK INHOPE

25

Three members of the cast of ‘Liverpool 1’ will be reunited on the stage for next month’s Royal Court Theatre production ‘Hope’. The play sees Mark Womack return to the city with his wife Samantha, best known as Ronnie from Eastenders, who will also feature in the play. It is the first written by Scot Williams, who worked with the pair on the 90s series Liverpool 1, and starred with Mark in the TV film Hillsborough. Mark and Samantha, who got together on the set of Liverpool 1, most recently worked together on the movie “One Night in Istanbul”, filmed late last year. Says Mark: “It was a bit strange to being with, the first half hour on set was really funny. But really quickly you click back into work mode. We’ve never worked on stage together so that will be good - I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be challenging!” Samantha was a late addition to the Hope cast. “She wasn’t available and then she suddenly became available. It’s great to get someone who’s as good as she is to jump onboard. But it’s got to be said; it’s a cameo role. Though the play is about Hope and she’s Hope, it’s a really great part, but she features in about 3 scenes.” The play, also starring René Zagger, has been described as a ‘darkly comic love story’ and explores a few fraught hours in the life of a writer trying to get his book done. Mark said: “It’s a bit like that film After Hours

- this guys been awake for 4 days solid and all he wants to do is finish his book, but these different forces come into his life. It is dark, but more complex, and the relationships create quite a lot of humour.” Mark says that working in Liverpool and on Liverpool-related stories is a priority for him. “It’s very important to me, it’s something that’s become more important in last few years. I’ve got to the stage where I feel like I want to give something back. So the idea of creating stuff that’s set in Liverpool is really appealing to me.” He owns a small company and has recently bought the rights to Niall Griffith’s gritty novel ‘Wreckage’, which he hopes to film in Liverpool over the next couple of years. “Anything I’m involved with I always like the fact when it’s kind of working class, I like films about the people like that I grew up with – whether it’s Glasgow or Newcastle or Liverpool or Manchester. It’s nice to see films about those people because there’s so many films made about other members of our society.”

Mark plans to step behind the camera for a production role with this project saying: “I’ve been involved in quite a few films with really high budgets to quite low and it’s been really interesting. You see people doing it and you think – well why not?” Meanwhile Hope will see his first return to the stage in some years, for a production that is “something different for Liverpool”. While Mark says he can’t reveal much about the plot without giving it away he does drop a surprising hint: “Laurel and Hardy make an appearance at one point”. You’ll have to see it to find out. Hope will run from 6 to 23 March, 2013. Contact the Royal Court Box Office on: 0870 787 1866 or check online at: www.royalcourtliverpool.co.uk

JUSTICEFORALL

Peter Hooton was a key figure in organising this year’s Christmas number one, the re-recording of ‘He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother’, which featured a number of guest performers, including Robbie Williams, Paul McCartney, Beverley Knight and Paloma Faith. Hooton, famous for his work as lead singer with ‘The Farm’, spoke to us about the moment he found out they’d reached number one, how the collaboration first came about and how important it was to produce a fitting memorial to those lost in Hillsborough following the revelations in December. HOW DID YOU REACT WHEN YOU HEARD YOU HAD REACHED NUMBER ONE? We were told to travel down to the Radio One studios a couple of hours before it was officially announced, so we had an inkling. When it was officially announced, we were really pleased, also considering that the organising and planning of it only started in mid-October. So it was unprecedented really. It was because of people helping out who were unpaid, and coming onboard out of the goodness of their hearts. It was good to get a number one instead of the X Factor or other institutions who plan their release nine months in advance. But it wasn’t a celebration as such because of what it was for. Keith out of the band lost one his mates at Hillsborough as well. So instead of a big celebration, we just started hugging each other. When Radio One announced it and we were in the studios, Keith got a bit upset and I got little upset, because of what it really meant to us. I mean to get a

number one without any marketing budget is remarkable, because it just shows you ‘people power’ really. We told the press officer though that there was to be no contact with The Sun. Being the biggest selling paper in the country and it usually likes to champion certain causes, they had nothing to do with the single. The biggest selling paper in the country and we banned them from reporting on it! So that was another remarkable thing you know, managing to achieve what we did without needing the biggest newspaper supporting us. To quote Mick Jones “It was one of his proudest moments”. We were sitting in the pub on the Sunday night when we got to number one and he had the official chart banner next to him as he was having a pint saying “We’ve done it. We’ve done it”. HOW DID THE IDEA TO RELEASE THE SINGLE COME ABOUT? You see, there was no plan or inkling of what we should do. I spoke with Steve Rotheram

(MP) with the idea to release a single in 2009 on the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough. So that really was the beginning of the timeline. He rang me in 2008 and said he’d been in touch with Rick Parry at Liverpool Football Club to see if they’d planned anything special yet for the 20th anniversary. Because he was Lord Mayor at the time he said he wanted to put Hillsborough back on the political agenda because he was in a position to do so. So what he wanted to do first of all was use the power of pop music and make a commemorative record. So we said to do ‘The Fields of Anfield Road’ because there wasn’t a definitive version of it. In the end, that was a massive success for us. We kept it really organic and it ended up selling 50 to 60,000

THEHIDDEN PICTURE SHOW

“You are here to stay in ze castle?” the man holding the lantern asks me. “Uh…I guess so?” To be honest, I don’t know exactly what I’m doing here behind the Anglican Cathedral in the freezing pitch black. I followed a hand drawn map to this exact spot, and now this man with a strong Eastern European accent is about to lead me to my fate.

That’s because I’m taking part in a Reel Unknown secret cinema event where movies meet performance. It works like this: you buy a ticket to an undisclosed film and location and are given details about where to meet and what to wear (tonight it’s black and white) just a few days before the performance. Show up, and go along for the ride: this is cinema at its most interactive and mysterious. Tonight our small group of mostly couples are led through the grounds of the Anglican Cathedral where we come across a pair of overdressed grave robbers, and then later on Hope street a crowd of rioters wielding torches and screaming ‘kill the monster!’. All clues point to Frankenstein, but that seems too easy somehow? We are given medical identity cards and led into the Liverpool Medical Institute, where we are asked to don medical coats before entering a lecture theatre. Here we are given a mini performance; a man who introduces himself as Dr Frankenstein (bingo!) gives a lecture, and the boy who was texting on his phone next to me on our cross-city walk suddenly jumps up to deliver lines – an actor in our midst!

After we are led out into the main hallway where snacks have been laid out and a series of theatrical performances are taking place all around. There are medical students conducting experiments, and a real life Frankenstein monster laid out on the table. We have mug shots taken for our identity cards and are left to absorb the theatrics at our leisure – the whole thing is intensely surreal, messing with my antiquated notions of ‘actors on the stage and audience in their seats’. The performers and costumes are impressive and more than once I stumble across actors engaged in intense interaction while in character, even while no one is watching them. Finally Frankenstein’s monster comes to life and there is another mini performance before we are led back into the theatre for the main event. Dr Frankenstein performs a baffling musical interlude with his monster before the film is revealed: Young Frankenstein, the Mel Brooks 1974 spoof. Ah ha! Now it makes sense; the absurdist humour fits and the fact that all the references had gone over my head does too as I’ve never seen the film before.

Needless to say it’s great watch, as have been the other Hidden Picture Shows the Reel Unknown people have put on to date - being The Goonies (classic), and Con Air (well, so bad it’s good anyway). It’s a really fantastic and unique night, and for little more than the price of an ordinary cinema tickets it’s a no brainer really. Before leaving we are handed our personalized medical cards with our new identities on them which make for a great souvenir and marks the kind of creativity and attention to detail that Reel Unknown have become synonymous with. Well played! Keep up to date with Reel Unknown events at: reelunknown.co.uk JENNIFER PERKIN ||

ALBUMREVIEWS EELS WONDERFUL, GLORIOUS

THE JOY FORMIDABLE WOLF’S LAW

YO LA TENCO FADE

The Eels first album was released in 1996... Wonderful Glorious is the tenth. Mark Everett (E) has always used his songwriting to document some of his most personal and difficult moments including the deaths of his sister and mother and the dysfunctional relationship with his physicist father.

It’s always interesting to see a British band succeed in America and ponder the question: why them? Talent, hard work, timing – sure. But luck – and good connections which help that luck along - have to be a huge factor. This is almost certainly the case for The Joy Formidable, who have burst forth from the unfortunately named Mold, North Wales, to international tours, American talk shows and now a coveted Muse support slot.

Yo La Tengo has been a staple in the indie music community since forming in New Jersey in the late 80s. That sign of longevity shows that fans have not become bored with them yet. “Fade,” the band’s latest album, is a fantastic addition to their already impressive discography.

This album is an altogether more uplifting affair. He said he was invigorated by using a new studio space and had an open let’s try it policy towards any musical ideas or suggestions. It starts with Bombs Away a soulful and funky bassline driven the song. After a mellow Accident Prone, Peach Blossom literally rips out of the speaker and gives you a wake up call with its distorted drums and guitar riffs. This album has the Eels quality of sounding crunchy and lo fi at times but also sounds warm and sonically rich. It is also full of catchy, melodic hooks that bounce around in your head after listening. On The Ropes is an alt-country ballad that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Johnny Cash album. True Original takes the gruff Eels vocal sound and puts it into a soft delicate ballad where E offers to take a bullet for someone. The title track Wonderful Glorious finishes up with an uplifting, repeating keyboard led outro with a screaming vocal over the top.

It’s not that The Joy Formidable are bad, it’s more a case of they are just O.K. It’s a big, Marshall-amps-stacked, multicolored-light-show, sound all right – so perhaps not surprisingly more appealing to American ears than some of the more understated British offerings. Certainly, the juxtaposition of a strong and soaring female voice over big guitars proved a successful formula for fellow exports The Duke Spirit. This is their second record, roaring even louder than 2011’s The Big Roar, and offers standout stadium bangers with anthemic ‘Maw Maw Song’ and the bass-heavy ‘Little Blimp’. Pretty acoustic number ‘Silent Treatment’ demonstrates their range and singer Ritzy Bryan’s capable voice, while on the sparkly ‘The Leopard and the Lung’ she shares vocal duties with bassist Rhydian Dafydd to lovely effect.

This album should be well received by fans as it has enough to keep them happy but it’s also a good introduction for anyone not already in the club. It has a comfortable and familiar feel and offers an underlying feeling of positivity that frequently permeates through the music.

All well and good, but it’s definitely not going to change your life or even add much to it. Any genuine feeling is lost under layers of gloss and sheen, and they don’t rock quite hard enough to enjoy on a purely superficial level. Ultimately there are just far, far too many points during this record where we pause to think: “The Duke Spirit have already done this, and they did it much better.”.

Opening with the bewitching six-minute opener Ohm, Yo La Tengo, dip their toes in shoegaze. Standouts like Well You Better and Stupid Things begin with jarring guitars and fall into a soothing dream. Few bands can deliver that fading theme as well as these seasoned musicians. Several of their songs without fail, showcase the soft yet uplifting quality of the guitar. All 10 tracks are consistently good. The effortless low-key sound can only come from disciplined people as these. Guitarist and piano player Ira Kaplan and his wife, drummer and vocalist Georgia Hubley, are supported with bassist James McNew to create the ultimate indie rock album.. Cornelia and Jane and Before We Run , some of the tracks where Hubley takes the lead are at times the most haunting. Her restful vocals guide the wandering guitar. Even at its most frantic parts, you will begin to fade into it. As one of the year’s earliest releases, it sets the tone for what will be a grand year for music.. 9/10 PC ||

Four Men for Mencap ZANZIBAR, JANUARY 26 We are informed at the start of the show that in fact it would be three men for learning disability charity Mencap tonight as Pete Wylie had dropped out last minute. Disappointing, yes, but also a great opportunity for the remaining three musketeers to crack increasingly outlandish jokes about Wylie’s reasons for pulling out, all night long.

The last men standing more than filled the gap - Ian Prowse of Pele and Amsterdam and Ian McNabb of Icicle Works joined Brian Nash of Frankie Goes to Hollywood onstage, who organised the gig in support of the Mencap charity which his daughter works for. A great idea, and a trilogy of Liverpool legends that the audience were more than happy to get behind wholeheartedly - at one point our gig companion commenting: “Feels like we’re crashing a family reunion”. First, though, we endure electro pop comedy band Stereo Electric Mistress who while valiantly foregoing pride to indulge in Dad dancing and silly lyrics, are actually probably talented enough to make serious music. Then again, there’s enough of that about isn’t there? For the record our favourite tune is realist love anthem, “Generally...She’s Fine”, not least because they manage to get the word ‘conundrum’ in the lyrics. Onto the main event, which sees our three guitar-wielding heroes sat in a row, accompanied by a very talented percussionist. They take turns in leading songs, running through classics from their respective bands, and solo songs, as well as a smattering of

covers. With Prowse the classic troubadour of a heartland rock tradition, McNabb with his turn of melody and impressive guitar picking, and Nasher with his electric guitar and heartstring-pulling style; the banter is lighthearted, the love flows freely and their different sounds complement nicely. Icicle Works tune ‘Evangeline’ soars, Amsterdam’s ‘Does This Train Stop on Merseyside’ gets the whole crowd singing and Frankie’s ‘Power of Love’ unsurprisingly brings the house down. The trio also honor the missing Wylie by playing his tune “Heart As Big As Liverpool”, with Prowse quipping “This will be the only time it will be played in the key it was written in”. There are few dry eyes in the house by the end. We laughed, we cried, it was for a good cause and we were all kept warm and dry for a few precious hours on a dreary January evening. When Nasher suggests it could become an annual event, we say yes! www.mencap.org.uk JENNIFER PERKIN ||

The Fire Beneath The Sea ZANZIBAR, JANUARY 12

if you’re not already on this band wagon – get on it like a car bonnet.

which I believe inspires the mind- boggling randomness that exists in us all.

So I rocked up at the Zanzibar for ‘The Final Death Match’ of Greedy Jesus’ ‘The hunger Games’. With 3 days in Parr Street Studios up for grabs, the stakes were high.

Their energy filled the room, enveloping everyone and the place became alive! The crowd bounced like a load of lunatics on pogo sticks while the band were throwing shapes and passing microphones.

Around Half ten bells, the magnetic, explosive energy that is FBTS, came to the stage (or should I say crammed onto the stage) with all 15 band members over-spilling into the audience. With barely any space between them and the crowd, everyone became part of the performance as they indulged in a cheeky bit of audience interaction. Best known style wise for their crazy headwear, the odd rainbow poncho and the occasional bare chests, they appear off the wall from the get go. Teamed with the sheer number of them, it looks mental…and basically is, they have wackiness in abundance

They picked a good opener with ‘Hips Go Wild’, a very catchy tune. If you can stand still to this tune, you are a robot, end of! Their talents seem limitless and with their bass slapping, dj scratching, funk and jazz clashing, rapping passion, they are wild. It’s amazing how in sync they are with a dj, guitars, drums, flute, trumpet, sax and a plethora of rappers/ beat boxers but it all flows in a mesmerising, mindbending melodic mash up. You could describe their genre of music as Ska, however it’s what I would describe as a trippy eclectic fusion of jazz meets funk, flipping the

script with some happy rap. They have been compared to Madness…I would say the early 80s stuff such as the ‘Work, Rest, Play Ep’ and ‘One Step Beyond’ although I feel they are unique in their music style. They finished their short set on ‘Glamour’ another belter of a tune! They are an exciting Liverpool band and not to be missed! Well FBTS, you were on FIRE and electric, and the deserving WINNERS of ‘The Hunger Games’. Yes, their shit hot performance stole the winning slot. I look forward to see what you bananas bunch bring out of Parr Street! Follow this band on facebook.com/thefirebeneaththesea. BECKY TAVERNOR ||

FILMREVIEWS The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Plenty of people will walk into this film expecting ‘The Lord of the Rings’. These people will most likely be left disappointed because what they fail to understand is that those films were made as a passion project, by a director attempting to show that anything is filmable. Now that he’s done so, instead of trying to oneup his previous work he chooses to celebrate it and in this aspect ‘An Unexpected Journey’ most definitely works. This is not to say that the film does not have problems; many stretches of the first two acts feel unnecessary and forced in, making you question whether you’ve walked into an extended edition rather than the theatrical release. The film is also filled with references to Tolkien’s other works and whilst this may be interesting to fans of the novels, it will most

likely leave the average audience member scratching their head. Fortunately what the film lacks in story-telling and pacing it makes up for in the characters. Martin Freeman is perfect for the reluctant yet eager to prove himself Bilbo Baggins and need more be said about Ian McKellen’s Gandalf? The cinematography has also significantly improved since the previous films, opting to actually hold a shot instead of using pointless camera-motions. Despite being initially cautious about Jackson’s choice to turn ‘The Hobbit’ into a full trilogy,

I have to say that I really enjoyed this film. No it’s not as dark or significant as ‘The Lord of the Rings’, but seeing as it never set out to be you can’t really fault it on that. So if you want to nit-pick then feel free – because there’s plenty of work for you here – but if you think you’re capable of relaxing and simply enjoying the film for what it unashamedly is, then I’d definitely recommend ‘An Unexpected Journey’. Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino has never been one to shy away from his inspirations, some even go so far as to say that he just downright rips off what others do better. Django Unchained is the story of fugitive slave (Jamie Fox) and his alliance with German bounty hunter, Dr King Schultz. Set in Mississippi, two years before the civil war, the pair set out on a quest to save Django’s German speaking lady love, Brünnhilde (Kerry Washington)from her slave chains at Plantation, Candie Land. Sure, it doesn’t sound like anything we might have seen before, right? But the nod to the heroes of the spaghetti western are all over Tarantino’s picture and even has a cameo by Franc Nero, Django’s 1960‘s namesake and the unmerciful star of the western revenge picture. Never afraid to mince his words or his blood smattering showdowns, Tarantino lends his smart mouth to the script and has his audience tittering during some outrageous sequences of bullets squishing flesh. Waltz’s wit and composure lend a lightness to dialogue with a growling, Clint Eastwood performance from Foxx and the manic, wild-eyed performance of pampered plantation owner, Calvin Candie played by Leonardo DiCaprio. As usual Tarantino has indulged with his running time, see Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2 for more over indulgence, but unlike Bill Django never tires and proves Tarantino really is the comeback kid. Les Misérables

The opening scene of Les Misérables is, believe it or not, a bleak one. Grey skies loom over the striking image of a ship which is being hauled by chained men. In this group is #24601 – the soon to be released Jean Valjean, played by Hugh Jackman. Valjean has served his sentence of nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread, and is on parole. Initially Jackman appears emaciated and exhausted. He breaks his parole, in a bid for a new start. He escapes and finds refuge in a church, leaving behind an enemy in the form of his longtime captor Javert, played by Russel Crowe. At this point Jackman delivers a stunning solo performance, which is completely believable and exudes an air of honest desperation. It is this raw and powerful solo which enthrals the audience from the beginning. The film fast forwards nine years, Jean Valjean has made a success of himself, but what of his enemy? Alas, Javert (Crowe) is to be problematic for the duration and not only to Valjean, but also to the audience. Crowe is unconvincing in his villainous role, and evokes nowhere near as much emotion as his co-stars. His performance is void of vitality, thus an antagonist unworthy of an audience’s abhorrence. Anne Hathaway provides more captivating viewing. Her character, Fantaine, winds up as a desperate prostitute who has had her fair share of anguish and dolour, heaven knows she’s misérable now. Hathaway provides a truly remarkable performance of “I dreamed a dream”, giving a harrowing portrayal of the results of poverty – “there is no escape from this hell I’m living”, she is bewitching and moving in how she conveys emotion through song. Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks all give admirable performances. Samantha Barks in particular astounds with “on my own” a performance so emotive that you’ll probably find yourself still holding your breath afterwards. Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter make a somewhat surprisingly good pair – they play a slightly conniving but mostly harmless man and wife who bring comedic relief to the film. All of the actors with significant roles provoke empathy and manage to drag you from your seat into their world of turmoil. The plot is not a complex one, neither are the characters themselves very complex, however the performances given are beautiful, strong, emotional and honest. Les Mis is a film which you will find yourself thinking about a week after you have seen it. FAYE HART ||

LOWDOWN ON TALENT

INTRODUCING…

ROBERT VINCENT Robert Vincent has been a ‘big’ talent on the local singer/songwriter scene but after many years of perseverance he is finally getting some well deserved recognition from further afield. You can currently hear Rob’s new single on Radio 2 and a host of other radio stations. We caught up with him at Studio 2... YOUR ALBUM IS OUT ON 28TH JANUARY AND IS ALREADY CREATING A BUZZ. TELL US HOW YOU GOT TO THIS POINT? My old band Night Parade worked with a producer called Phil Spalding and through that I met Pete Smith who was the producer for Sting, Joe Cocker and loads of other classic artists. He really liked what I was doing so when Night Parade fell apart i got in touch and said I wanted to do a rootsy, americana album and he said ‘yes let’s do it’. We went to Brighton and recorded it. WHERE DID ALL THE SONGS COME FROM? Some are completely new and some are from the past few years. Basically the song ‘Life in Easy steps’ gave me the idea for the book style of the album based on my writing book. The idea is it’s like an instruction manual for life but you are writing the book yourself and you never stop or get easy answers. You just keep going. SO IF YOU BUY THIS ALBUM DOES YOUR LIFE GET BETTER? Maybe or maybe not...it helped me because it was how I was feeling. THE INDUSTRY HAS CHANGED A LOT IN THE PAST FEW YEARS. DO YOU HAVE A

TRADITIONAL SET UP? It’s essentially an indie label. I have a good investor who believes in what I am doing and i’m very lucky to find someone. Graham my manager has put a team of ex EMI people together and producer Pete. It’s a great team of people and in the past 18 months it’s really opened my eyes to how hard it actually is to do anything in this business. YOU HAVE BEEN TOURING UP AND DOWN THE COUNTRY. The majority of the past year I’ve been out all over the UK and Ireland 3 or 4 times a week. I’ve done some dates with Brian Houston and also a girl called Emma Stevens who is a great up and coming songwriter but generally doing any gig I can and getting out there. Again having the financial support that enables me to go out and play without worrying about the money is what makes it possible. It’s been great in Brighton and also in the North East. It’s really cool to see it build up over time. SO YOUR SOUND HAS A ROOTSY, COUNTRY, AMERICANA FEEL. IS THAT YOUR NATURAL WRITING STYLE? It always was but I think I avoided it before but

whenever I sat down with a guitar it ended up sounded like Charlie Rich with influences of Orbison and Cash – as much as I can sound like those guys of course. I tried doing the indie thing but I think this music is more true to the music I was influenced by when I was growing up. I think that’s why it is working better and being received so well. YOUR SINGLE IS JUST ABOUT TO BE RELEASED AND IS ALREADY GETTING RADIO PLAYS. Yes it’s called ‘Life in Easy Steps’ It’s actually out on 21st Jan just before the album. Janice Long and Stuart Maconie have been playing it on Radio 2 and 6. You can buy from the website and it’s available from itunes, Amazon and all the usual places. We are also getting requests from abroad now so we are looking at releasing it in more places around the world. You can see Rob supporting Bonehead’s & Vinny Peculiar’s new band The Parlour Flames at the Epstein Theatre (Neptune) on 9th Feb and at The Rodewald Suite at The Philharmonic on 13th Feb with Peter Bruntnell www.robertvincentmusic.com

LOWDOWN ON TALENT

BROKENMEN

Liverpool band Broken Men appreciate the power of mystique. Born under the banner of Milk:Presents, a ‘label/events/recording/design’ company based in Bold Street, the young men involved in the band are creative, talented and very passionate. Also, being that they have the creative resources at their disposal they have a level of control that many bands would envy. Despite this they reassure us “You’re not going to be getting Facebook updates from us every 5 minutes”. We first noticed the band at the North by Northwest gig last year, which featured a lengthy line up of Liverpool talent. The show proved two things; 1) there is a lot of talent in the city and 2) not a lot of it is particularly original. Broken Men stood out for their unified stage presence – donned smartly in braces and all – and their slightly harder edge, which contrasted against the jangly and jaunty majority. The songs were catchy but they rocked, and dare we say it – they were sexy. We were intrigued. We investigated.

The band released the infectious single ‘Oversold’ last year, and followed it up with their EP (or ‘phase’ as they call their releases) Dogmeat later in the year. Both releases display a straight up style - incredibly refreshing in these complicated musical climes - and a knack for writing classic licks that still seem somehow fresh. The band aren’t afraid of melody either, and for this have garnered comparisons to Franz Ferdinand.

We met the band in Parr Street for a chat, and found like to be much bubblier than their vaguely menacing stage presence would suggest, effervescent with conversation and talking over one another. We asked them about the name and vocalist Bob Westhead indulged:

And while they will happily gush about their hometown (“it’s a boss vibe”), they’ve got their sites firmly set beyond Liverpool.

“The definition of a Broken Man is ‘someone who causes irreparable damage throughout their life that can’t be repaired.” We kind of liked that. It was also a clan name in Scotland years and years ago. If you kicked it out you were called a Broken Man; the outsider.”

This is music with a big potential audience, and the band agree when we suggest that there’s a stateside slant to their sound.

Drummer Mike Bennett says: “It’s very important for us to think outside of Liverpool, to instantly move out of Liverpool. Imagine playing 15 shows here in a year – no one’s gonna give a shit in 20 minutes. You’ve got to get off straight away. It’s not a disrespect to Liverpool, it’s that you can’t just stay.” When the band played a show in Rome last

year the city made a huge impression on them. Mike: “Rome inspired Broken Men as a whole. We’re walking around parks and there’s loads of broken statues – men. Videos and design; loads of it’s based on ideas that come from Rome – Rome’s made up of broken fucking rock, broken stone broken everything.” The vintage feel of the videos the band have released, as well as the moody artwork posted on their Facebook site, give the band a distinct aesthetic and they insist it’s something they will continue to explore alongside the music. As for the future, the band have plans to play in New York this year and will soon be announcing tour dates closer to home. One thing is for sure though, the band have momentum: Says Mike: “We wanna move, we wanna keep moving. 2013 is for movement.” We’ll try and keep up. JENNIFER PERKIN ||

LOWDOWN ON TALENT

PEACE 2013 is set to be the year of Peace. While we hope that people of the world can settle their differences and work towards harmony; it’s a surer bet that the catchy tunes of this 4 piece from Birmingham will be rocking your world. If the industry pundits are correct, and this year will indeed mark the return (yet again) of guitar music, Peace may just be at the forefront. Formed two year ago, brothers Harrison (vox, guitar) and Sam (bass) Koisser along with Douglas Castle (guitar) and Dominic Boyd (drums) have been taking it slow thus far, releasing just a couple of singles and slowly building up a fanbase that has culminated in sell-out shows. This year sees things speed up however, with a coveted slot on the NME tour, and their debut record due for release in spring. The fact that ours is one of seven interviews they are conducting today indicates the kind of buzz they are generating. The boys seem relaxed and confident when we catch up with them enjoying a picnic lunch in the dressing room of the Kazimier ahead of their show. Backstage they seem slightly aloof at first, particularly Harrison, but after a bit he seems to warm up and one gets the impression that he’s quirky frontman to Dominic’s larrikin drummer. They’ve just found out about the NME slot and aren’t too cool to seem genuinely excited.

“The first slot is quite cool, it’s the slot The Vaccines did it two years ago, and Coldplay did it on the first ever NME Tour”, says Harrison. Adds Dominic, “And our ultimate aim is to be the next Coldplay, so that’s great.” Unlikely. Infectious though their tunes like “Wraith’ and ‘Bloodshake’ are, there’s something of an art school vibe to the band, a willingness to experiment that makes them stand out from their counterparts and endears them to a wide range of fans. One only needs to look at straight up poppy ballad ‘California Daze’ next to the sprawling ‘1998’; a cover of a classic 80s trance track, to see the diversity within what is only a small output thus far. Sam addresses this fluidity: “The only thing holding the sound together is that it’s the same four people, other than that it could go anywhere.” Dominic: “It’s really early days for us. If we do 3 albums, I think by the third album I’d like to have a bit of direction.”

During their set a few hours later they prove that they’ve got the musical chops to follow up their songwriting, as they play with an effortlessness bordering on nonchalance. No doubt having jammed together since High School, and having brothers in the mix, has contributed to their sense of camaraderie. The potential is there: with more experience and tunes could come real greatness. Noting the genuine positivity that comes from the band’s music, one wonders: is the band name something of a mission statement in these tumultuous times? Or just a name? Harrison doesn’t skip a beat: “60/40. You decide”. Ok, we’ll say it. Next. Big. Thing. See Peace perform along with Palma Violets, Miles Kane and Django Django for the NME tour on Feb13 at the O2 Academy. peaceforeverever.co.uk JENNIFER PERKIN ||
