To summer. Hopefully. July at least. And goodbye to a very wet June. Although last month’s woeful weather put paid to Africa Oyé’s outdoor plans, the entertainment continued indoors at The Picket and showed how the city can still have fun with or without a bit of sun. This month, festivals such as Brazilica, Brouhaha, DaDaFest and Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival should warm the cockles of your heart, whatever the temperature. Should you need to take cover, down at the Albert Dock and Mann Island, the shelter of Tate and Open Eye Gallery will bring much pleasure in the form of their current exhibitions. See our previews pages (p.22-23) for an overview of what to expect. We pay homage to Bowie’s iconic, ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’ album, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, with a few words from local musicians who have been influenced by it. We’re also offering readers a chance to win a copy of the re-mastered version, released last month, on our competitions page. (p.8) This month’s issue contains a review of the critically acclaimed world première of The Match Box at Liverpool Playhouse Studio. The response to the play, by audiences and critics was so great that the run has been extended to July 21. Leanne Best’s central performance has been described as ‘astonishing’ and after watching the play last month, Lowdown has no hesitation in recommending that you go and see it. NEWS DaDaFest 2012 In the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, DaDaFest 2012 is proud to announce it will feature a groundbreaking exhibition as part of the London 2012 Festival, plus three new works commissioned for the Unlimited Cultural Olympiad programme. Niet Normaal: Difference on Display is a major contemporary art exhibition coming to the UK for the first time, at the Bluecoat from 13 July - 2 September. It addresses a definitive question of our time: ‘what is normal and who decides?’ specifically focussing on language as freedom and language as imprisonment and will feature paintings, installations, films, photographs and sculptures by renowned artists. ‘Inspired’, a new performance by Laurence Clark, is funny, thought provoking and uses humour to encourage audiences to re-examine the stereotypical way in which people talk about and view the Paralympics. ‘Unlimited Global Alchemy’, led by British artist Rachel Gadsden in partnership with South African artist and activist Nondumiso Hlwele and The Bambanai Womens Group is a special screening of short films, shot on location in Cape Town and followed by a talk with the artists. ‘The Ugly Spirit’ from Liverpool based Fittings Multimedia Arts is a new backstage play by Russell Barr mixing in the extraordinary improvisational talents of David Hoyle with the vocal skills of acclaimed soprano Denise Leigh. It’s all set in the undiscovered places that lurk behind the scenes and invites a select audience to take a peek into the backstage world of the famous Siamese Sisters Jessie and Bessie. Dancing in the street

A show-stopping season of dance comes to a head next month when the Big Dance north-west Link Up hits Liverpool ONE, bringing 1275 dancers with it. Since a dance world record attempt kicked off the fun on 18 May, Big Dance has had the nation on its feet, celebrating dance in unusual places for all ages and abilities. Now groups from Merseyside, Cumbria, Cheshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester are coming together on Sunday 15 July at 2.30pm for the Big Dance north-west Link Up, when dancers aged 6-86 will perform choreography representing the history and landmarks of their region. Streaming down the steps of Liverpool ONE’s Chavasse Park and spreading along the length of Thomas Steers Way, the performers will provide a spectacle of mass movement never seen before in the North West. Big Dance is the UK’s biggest ever celebration of dance and is one of the highlights of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. Merseyside Dance Initiative (MDI) has led on Big Dance in the North West. Karen Gallagher MBE, Director of Merseyside Dance Initiative said: ‘Big Dance 2012 in the northwest is a chance to shine a light on our region and show the rest of the country and the world what wonderful dance activity goes on here. Along with our partner organisations we have brought dance into the heart of local communities, and bringing all the boroughs together in Liverpool ONE will unite the whole north-west in dance.’

Liverpool Knowsley Cup 2012 A local football tournament, organised by Soccer Events Limited, will welcome more than 100 teams from eight countries to compete in the event held this month.

Piano Festival Bach In The City

There’ll be music on the streets this summer when Liverpool ONE transforms into a live music venue and five pianos take centre stage for the world’s only official piano busking festival. Organised in partnership with Open Culture, Tickle the Ivories will return for a second year from 7 July to 16 September. The ten-week piano festival is open to everyone, from professional to amateur players who are all invited to book free time-slots to perform on and around the pianos. Last year’s Tickle the Ivories was a huge success with over 900 musicians taking part and almost 4000 hours of performance. As well as the five stationary pianos there will be the Tickle on Tour piano. From Albert Dock to Liverpool Central Station the touring piano will explore the city. There are also freeplay sessions each day, where any member of public can play without prebooking. And the best thing is that all performers taking part in Tickle the Ivories are licensed to busk and keep all the proceeds they make. The Liverpool Knowsley Cup and Mini Cup has confirmed a new partnership with leading brand in world football, Puma ahead of this year’s tournament. ZIGGYSTARDUST In 1972, David Bowie’s concept album, ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’ came into being, possessing a force that would not only reverberate across the musical landscape for decades to come, influencing generations of musicians, artists and audiences, but catapult the star into stratospheric climes. 40 years on, the classic album has been re-released and remastered to celebrate its anniversary and in recognition of this, we’ve asked local musicians and guest writers to share what impact the seminal album had on them. JOHN HEAD – SHACK

VINNY PECULIAR – PARLOUR FLAMES

I first heard David Bowie very early one Christmas morning in the early to mid ‘70s. Myself and my brother, were crouched on the floor hovering over our new brick shaped cassette player with its magical red recording button.

‘Keep your electric eye on me babe…’

The cassette that accompanied the magical machine, either by genius, serendipity or mischief, was ‘Aladdin Sane’. I still don’t know why that album was chosen by one of our parents, but from the moment we pressed the play button and the brilliant Mike Garson tinkles the piano intro on ‘Time’, Bowie’s: ‘Flexes like a whore, falls w***ing to the floor’ lyrics and then the amazing Mick Ronson brings in the boys, we were sucked in. We sat crouched over the little speaker watching the tiny little cassette wheels spinning, turning the cassette over and over ‘til our parents got up (and fast forwarding past the first few bars from then on when parents were around). After this we hunted down as much of David Bowie and this amazing band as we could. Starting with the brilliant ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’. This is still one of my favourite bands ever. I love Mick Ronson’s guitar playing and arrangements. I was heartbroken when they disbanded. It was hard to take for a young lad! They were head and shoulders above anything else I was aware of at that time. This was my introduction to David Bowie, a chameleon who would keep coming back, re-inventing himself time and again with completely new, almost unrecognisable guises and sounds. Always interesting, usually brilliant. I’ve always thought that in the right hands music becomes art. I think David Bowie is definitely an artist and quite possibly even art himself.

In 1972 I was a fey shy teenager in a nondescript Worcestershire village watching David Bowie perform ‘Starman’ on Top Of The Pops. Three weeks later, I bought the album TRAFOZSATSFM with cash scrimped from a paper round. It changed my life, and not just musically. The Bowie crush became a lifestyle option; driving wedges between peers and parents alike. Experiments with henna and (my mother’s) make up soon followed, a satin bomber jacket and ‘chimney stacks’, I devoted the next couple of years to the man who fell to earth. There was simply no one like him. Bowie was Ziggy, playing a part, telling a story, the rise and the fall, from desperate album opener ‘Five Years’: ‘It was cold and it rained and I felt like an actor’, to the prophetic ‘Ziggy Stardust’, with a spiky Mick Ronson guitar riff that wasn’t really a riff. ‘When the kids had killed the man I had to break up the band’ was the writing on the wall no one really noticed. The nightmare of a future ‘Rock n Roll Suicide’ as ‘time takes a cigarette, puts it in your mouth, you pull on a finger then another finger, then cigarette’. Moving like tigers on Vaseline, freaking out in moon-age daydreams; nothing was ever quite the same again. NEIL GRIFFITHS – THE CHRISTIANS Ziggy Stardust… Staged androgyny, oozing sexuality, outrageous dress & hairstyle, narcissistic self absorption collapsing into Rock n Roll Suicide. Pure Love is a new collaboration between ex Gallows frontman, Frank Carter and guitarist Jim Carroll (The Hope Conspiracy and The Suicide File). With backgrounds in hardcore music, the pair came together instinctively, from a mutual desire to try something different after the punishing demands of playing hardcore full time started to take their toll. Their first album is released in October and they play The Zanzibar later this month. Pure Love intend to ‘tour and tour’, but more importantly, they just want to have fun. HAVING BOTH BEEN IN SUCCESSFUL BANDS BEFORE, IS IT HARDER OR EASIER STARTING OUT ON A NEW PROJECT? Frank: I think it makes it easier in the sense that we’ve done it all before so nothing is new or scary but also harder because although there’s no expectation from us, there may be a little bit from other people who might be expecting something different to what they get, but all in all it’s been good, everyone seems to be enjoying it. PURE LOVE SEEMS A MARKED DEPARTURE FROM YOUR PREVIOUS WORK, DO YOU THINK IT’LL STILL REACH OUT TO THE SAME AUDIENCE? Jim: Just speaking from personal experience I grew up listening to a lot of different stuff and even though punk and hardcore was a big part of me growing up it was just one of the steps. I was into music before that and I’m still into it after. There are plenty of people out there who’ve said to us after the shows they were a fan of previous bands we were in, so a lot of people have stuck around, which is good. YOU’VE BOTH SAID YOU WERE GETTING TIRED OF HARDCORE, DO YOU THINK THAT’S A NATURAL PROGRESSION AS IT’S DIFFICULT TO SUSTAIN OR JUST YOUR OWN PREFERENCES AND ATTITUDES CHANGING?

Frank: It wasn’t tired of hardcore. I love hardcore music and I always will, but the problem was the level that I had started out at - it wasn’t possible for me to continue at that pace. If you’ve seen Gallows perform you’d know that I gave everything. I just liked to do damage to everything and everyone around me, including the songs. That was the whole point and and I’m not interested in doing that anymore. You get to a point where you think, I am a worthwhile human being and I’m sick of punishing myself. So I just wanted to try something different and just sing, not be covered in blood or bruises. YOU’VE BEEN QUOTED AS SAYING YOU’RE FILLING A GAP IN THE CURRENT MUSIC SCENE, WHAT DO YOU SEE THAT AS? Frank: A nice little round hole that says ‘like Pure Love’. I can’t say what that gap is. I don’t know whether there is anything missing but I like to think that we bring something new that maybe people didn’t realise wasn’t there and now it is. PURE LOVE IS A BAND YOU BOTH WANT TO HAVE FUN WITH, WILL YOU BE STEERING CLEAR OF MAKING ANY POLITICAL STATEMENTS IN YOUR MATERIAL? Frank: I never really considered myself a very political figure and I tried to avoid making political statements in the press. I just wrote a fairly politically inspired record with Gallows and that was just a product of its time. Now I try and avoid

that like the plague ‘cos it’s all quite boring really. HOW DOES YOUR ENVIRONMENT IN NEW YORK INFLUENCE YOUR SOUND/ MATERIAL? Frank: I think if anything our sound has become a lot more British from living out here. I’ve been listening to music from all over the world and talking to people from all over the world and I like to pull inspiration from people that are close to me. Jim: I wouldn’t say it has an influence on the sound. Where you’re living will influence how you’re feeling, so if you’re stressed about where you live that’ll come across, but New York has a really positive effect on me. I’m always looking for things to do and there’s always something going on. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE ALBUM? Jim: Definitely a lot of variety, which we’re really proud of. The two singles that have been released so far, ‘Handsome Devil’s Club’ and ‘Bury My Bones’ are probably the most straightforward and up tempo. There’s also other slower, moodier songs. We’ve drawn from a lot of influences. There is uniformity, it’s definitely a rock ‘n’ roll record, but then there’s a bluesy and punk influence so no tracks sound the same. NADIM SAWALHA

Celebrated Jordanian-born actor Nadim Sawalha heads to Liverpool this month to appear at Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival, in conversation at the Bluecoat, where he’ll share stories and anecdotes, reflecting on 50 years in British show business. Nadim also brings his new play, ‘Rest Upon the Wind’, to be performed as part of the festival at Unity Theatre. Inspired by Khalil Gibran’s book, ‘The Prophet’ (published in 1923, before going on to sell over a hundred million copies) the play, which was written by Nadim, is the story of Gibran’s struggle to deliver a message of love and peace and his life as an immigrant poet/painter in America. WHAT WAS THE IMPETUS BEHIND WRITING ‘REST UPON THE WIND’?

WHAT DO YOU HOPE AUDIENCES TAKE AWAY FROM THE PLAY?

The main character in the play, Khalil Gibran, is widely known because of his book, ‘The Prophet’ and yet as I’ve gone through life asking people what they know about the man himself, many had nothing to say other than praising the book.

To witness the struggle of another human being through a creative process is a very instructive process as is the power of storytelling so I hope that comes across. But this is also a story that happened a hundred years ago.

He was a very private and secretive man and I had to read a lot, around 40 books to try and get to him. So the first impetus was I wanted to know more about what kind of man he was and what kind of struggles he went through to give birth to ‘The Prophet’. The second reason is I like many aspects of his personality, the fact that he stuck to art when many of his friends were preoccupied with money and trading.

We think that the Arab American relationship started with George Bush but we actually started criticising each other and wanting things from each other a hundred years ago. So hopefully the audience will take away how history can explain what’s happening today.

He believed he was a thinker and a philosopher and a poet and he stuck to that. Most of us look over the fence and think the grass is greener and move over but he didn’t do that. I think that’s he’s such an iconic figure that he deserves someone to come along and take the time to uncover aspects of his life.

YOUR TALK AT BLUECOAT WILL REFLECT ON YOUR TIME IN THE INDUSTRY, HAVE YOU ACHIEVED ALL YOU SET OUT TO WHEN YOU MOVED TO LONDON IN THE 50S?

And as an Arab I feel we have so much history that is very deep and no-one has the time or the money to dig it up so I’ve dedicated some years of my life to this job.

And how time moves very slowly because things that are happening today were happening a long time ago.

I’ve done most of the things that I wanted to do. The last thing was to write a play that would find a good response in as many countries as possible and I think this last attempt at playwriting has been most satisfying and fascinating. I feel that I’ve done

all the crazy things I wanted to do, I’ve ticked all the boxes. And you have to be grateful that you’ve been given the opportunities, whether personally or professionally. DO YOU FEEL ANY OF THE CHALLENGES YOU FACED WHEN STARTING OUT ARE STILL APPARENT IN THE INDUSTRY? The challenges never really stop coming, they’re just different and represented in a different way and in different circumstances. LIVERPOOL ARABIC ARTS FESTIVAL IS THE ONLY ONE OF ITS KIND IN THE UK, HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU FEEL CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS SUCH AS THIS ARE? I’m looking forward to it, the last time I was in Liverpool was 55 years ago. I’m grateful to the festival for inviting us and it’ll be nice to exchange opinions and ideas. But it’s very important because it takes very brave souls to establish something like this and keep pushing it. It’s a lot of hard work for very little financial or material reward but it’s a spiritual journey, so it’s important in that sense.

LIVE REVIEWS DIONNE WARWICK PHILHARMONIC HALL, JUNE 4

Dionne Warwick does not need to apologize for having a cold, you can barely tell. Yet, it’s the first thing she tells the audience as she struts onto the stage of an unbelievably half empty Philharmonic Hall. Not that that seems to bother Dionne as she sets about laying down the house rules. She talks for a good five minutes before even singing a note. The order of the evening is to have a good time. With the words: ‘HERE - WE - GO’, the ever elegant Ms. Warwick starts the show with her classic 1964 Bacharach/David hit, ‘Walk On By’ and it’s just wonderful to hear. This song really sets the benchmark for the evening. Dionne Warwick is celebrating 50 years in show business and tonight we are taken on a journey through her musical career. We’re treated to glorious renditions of all of her popular songs, ‘Do You Know The Way To San Jose’, ‘Say A Little Prayer’, ‘This Girl’s In Love With You’, to mention a few. After nearly every song, Ms. Warwick receives a standing ovation from every over-excited male in the audience. There are a lot of them too. On occasion, she pauses at the end of songs before delivering the ‘killer-note’. It becomes

a running joke with the audience but you get the impression that she’s just fooling around. A particular highlight of the evening is a breathtaking version of, ‘Alfie’, taken from the film of the same name. Dionne sits at the piano and delivers a performance with such sincerity that it completely outclasses the Cilla Black version. As does her version of, ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’. Dionne delivers both of these songs with a passion and intensity that Cilla Black could only dream of. For the finale, we have a heart-warming rendition of, ‘That’s What Friends Are For’ and perhaps the longest standing ovation of the night. Unsurprisingly, after her recent remarks to the press, there are no tributes to her cousin,

Whitney Houston. Tonight is about Dionne Warwick and the audience seem more than happy to have it that way. It’s hard to understand why every venue on this tour hasn‘t been sold out. How often do you get the chance to see a living legend like Dionne Warwick perform live? Once these great giants of music have left the building, who is going to take their place? I wonder if any of the current chart topping artists will be held in the same esteem as our much loved musical icons if they are to make 50 years in the business. I highly doubt it. Adam Coxon

Exploring the theme of grief through creative means must be a difficult task, given the complexity of the emotions associated with it. This world première at Liverpool Playhouse brings to life the success of Frank McGuinness in tackling the subject through just one voice. From the outset of the lengthy monologue the audience feels how suffocating grief can be. The stark figure of Sal, who appears onstage after a period of complete darkness followed by silence, sets an eerie scene within the confines of the intimate Playhouse Studio theatre. Leanne Best perfectly embodies the character of Sal and translates her emotional journey powerfully, instinctively and sincerely. As the story unfolds (Sal has lost her 12-year-old daughter in a violent tragedy) the protagonist’s emotions unravel. As each layer of the plot is revealed and we watch Sal pursue her opposing instincts towards forgiveness and then revenge, Best conveys the forces working within, exposing the character’s vulnerability and strength with equal measure.

Expectations surrounding the responses associated with death and grief are highlighted and examined, not least through Sal’s direct questioning of the audience, who become the representation of the norms being challenged. Sal’s anecdotes of her earlier life give background that helps create a fully developed character, subtly and intelligently. They also bring to life the other voices who play an integral part in Sal’s story. The thread of references to sulphur in various forms; from the continual physical striking of matches to the brimstone dialogue and the association with gunpowder and Sal’s daughter’s violent death, finally culminate in the irony that as the essential element for all

life, sulphur juxtaposes what Sal has become. She is bereft and her experience has left her feeling as detached from life as is possible. The intensity of the emotional despair conveyed is relieved through humour, intermittently, and Best is as adept at encouraging this as she is anger and other seemingly more negative emotions. The Match Box provokes the questioning of morality, grief, human instinct, justice, love and hate and Leanne Best’s performance is outstanding. Miss it, miss out! The Match Box run has been extended to July 21. MM.

Banga is Patti Smith’s 11th album and features a number of guests including Tom Verlaine, Jack Petruzzelli and her own children Jackson and Jesse Paris.

‘One Day I’m Going To Soar’ is Dexy’s first album in twenty seven years and it’s a belter. Kevin Rowland creates a mini opera that tells the story of an unhappy man struggling for answers and reflecting on his life. He’s suddenly distracted by a beautiful woman, imagining her a personality and a voice she speaks to him. Convinced she’s the one they get together and swear undying love but our hero suddenly changes his mind realising he’s merely chasing a dream of happy ever after that he doesn’t actually want. They row, she leaves and he comes to terms with his flaws and mistakes, resolving to enjoy being who he is.

Fiona Apple has built up a strong cult following over the years despite infrequent release. ‘The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw’ and ‘Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do’ is Apple’s fourth album and her first since 2005.

Based on dreams and observations, she has explored a wide variety of subject matter from the discovery of America, ‘Amerigo’ to a prayer to Mount Fuji for the people of Japan and the hardships they have had to endure recently, ‘Fuji San’. ‘This is the girl’ is a tribute to Amy Winehouse with a slow 50s feel that started as a poem, written after hearing about her death. ‘Banga’ is a building and driving track named after Pilate’s loyal dog in the Mikhail Bulgakov novel, ‘The Master and Margarita’. ‘Maria’ is an emotional ballad about deceased actress Maria Schneider and reminisces about times in the 70s when the pair knew each other. The album finishes with a cover of Neil Young’s ‘After The Gold Rush’. Bittersweet and sad at times but overall a very uplifting album.Intimate and interesting with lyrical meaning and depth. Like Leonard Cohen’s release earlier this year, it’s the artists ‘too old to rock and roll’ releasing some of the most vital music around. 8/10 PT ||

lt’s set to some great tunes, Mick Talbot brings a touch of Style Council to the production which works well with the more traditional Dexy’s sound. Stand out tracks include ‘She Gotta Wiggle’ with a soft piano intro building up to a song about attraction and desire, the soulful ‘I’m Always Gonna Love You’ with its theatrical break up section and ‘Free’ with a driving Motown feel. However, this album is a story (autobiographical?) that is best enjoyed as a whole. Highly entertaining and a great return. 9/10 GB ||

‘The Idler...’ contains many of Apple’s dysfunctional relationship break up lyrics. The sound is mostly voice and piano supplemented by the experimental percussion of Charley Drayton who is also co-producer. From thigh slaps to pebbles on a tin roof. ‘Every Single Night’ opens the album with delicate up front vocals backed with simple high piano. ‘Daredevil’ is reference to her lack of feeling: ‘I don’t feel anything until I smash it up.’ ‘Valentine’ starts with a soft vocal and turns abruptly into a soulful chorus. Jazz drums open ‘Left Alone’ and the lyrics offer insight into the internal emotional battle: ‘How can I ask anyone to love me, when all I do is beg to be left alone.’ The final track, ‘Hot Knife’ is a multi-layered vocal explosion about attraction, sex and hope. Maybe some of her issues have been worked out in this album. Apple’s lyrics dart about like flickering flames creating flashes of imagery as you listen and her vocals are from a whisper to a scream. She’s the fiery, self destructive girl who smashes your flat up after an argument. Scary and fascinating at the same time. Just don’t cross her. 8.5/10 PT ||

LOWDOWN ON FILM

FILMREVIEW Prometheus (15) In Ridley Scott’s return to science fiction after 30 years, a group of researchers venture to a distant moon intent on discovering the origins of mankind, however, those expecting a straight-up prequel to ‘Alien’ may be left disappointed as everyone’s favourite phallic creature has only a very minor role in the plot. Despite the task of overcoming the hype ‘Prometheus’ has received, Scott manages to fully immerse the audience in his world within minutes, with a mystifying atmosphere and truly epic scale, reminding us exactly why he was such a perfect sci-fi director in the first place. Credit must also be given to the cast who manage to bring depth to what would otherwise be typical cannon fodder characters. Although the pacing of the film may seem a bit foreign to a modern day audience, it is without a doubt one of the best sci-fi movies in recent years and if you have enjoyed Scott’s previous work it is definitely worth a look. INTRODUCING…

Dominic Dunn is the antithesis of the stereotypical portrayal of a teenager. Currently studying for his GCSEs, the 15-yearold singer songwriter is also working hard to become established on the local live music circuit, recording tracks and has recently set up his own company, Weekday Weekend Promotions, to help promote other underage acts.

WHAT KICK-STARTED YOUR INTEREST IN MUSIC? From an early age I was influenced by listening to my dad’s music collection, from The Clash to Simon and Garfunkel. My grandad plays the guitar and taught me as much as he could. He bought me a right handed guitar but we quickly discovered I play left handed so he restrung it for me. From then on I’m largely self taught, just listening to stuff and copying what I heard. HOW DID WEEKDAY WEEKEND PROMOTIONS COME ABOUT? I’ve been playing in venues myself, organising my own gigs and know how difficult it can be arranging underage events. I decided to set up a promotions company specifically for underage acts to help young artists gain exposure but also to keep the costs low for the audience and allow the act, venue and myself to take an equal cut. So everybody involved gets the same benefits. HOW DAUNTING IS IT STARTING OUT IN MUSIC, GIVEN YOU’RE DOING A LOT OF THE WORK FOR YOURSELF? It has been a challenge, knowing where to start

in some areas but I’ve been given a lot of help and advice from various people. Liverpool Bands pointed me in the right direction regarding a studio to record some material and in turn, Crosstown Studios have helped me a lot in the recording process by advising me on production etc. HOW ARE YOU BALANCING STUDYING AND PURSUING YOUR MUSIC CAREER? When I need to focus on studying I do. I’m revising for my GCSEs at the moment so I’m not doing as many live gigs and I’ll concentrate on the promotions when I have free time over the summer after the exams are over. I just have to be organised; I’ve been revising since the start of the year so I feel well prepared. I want to combine the two areas as I’m hoping to study Entertainment Law at university, so I have options available depending on what happens in the future. Dominic plays The Brink on 1 July. The main exhibition at Open Eye Gallery presents four artists, from the UK, France and Switzerland in the gallery’s first group show which considers how we interact with our immediate surroundings and how we transform them by looking at them.

The artists use still and moving images to question what we see as natural and artificial.

Rebecca Lennon’s video work, ‘Uncomfortable Silence’ sees the artist spray-paint white a series of objects selected from the waste of a city street, transforming and reclaiming them. In Lennon’s large-scale sound installation, ‘This is what they built the ship with’, the auto-tuning of the calls of seagulls examines our interactions with nature. The simple yet effective idea of manipulating what occurs naturally to become what we consider ‘perfect’ creates definite impact.

Pietro Mattioli’s series, ‘Two Thousand Light Years from Home’ documents the artist’s nighttime wanderings with pictures taken, as his child slept, over three seasons in 20062007. Using a perimeter marked by the reach of his baby monitor’s signal, Mattioli captures and isolates the familiar and mundane to reveal their hidden beauty. The images are succinct while creating layers of depth for the imagination to roam. Nicolas Milhé’s work explores power, surveillance and the seductiveness of images. A three metre-long sculpture emblazoned with a gigantic image of a tranquil Alpine landscape and penetrated by a vertical arrow-slit aperture, creates a contrary piece provoking consideration of the idea of what lies beneath, or behind. The generic and idealised image of the landscape conceals a more sinister terrain which Milhé offers as a representative of the mask that hides the ‘harsher realities of contemporary politics’. Milhé’s work is a powerful expression of an important and extremely relevant issue.

Alison Stolwood’s photographs highlight the ways in which time and perception act on the landscape and how technology has changed the way we look at the landscape. In ‘Seed Composite’, Stolwood doesn’t try to disguise that the piece has been constructed by technical means but rather allows this to add meaning. She refers to her use of the lens as ‘an aid to observation and as a tool for manipulation, power and control.’ Her images capture the true natural beauty of their subjects while hinting at our interference with the environment.

23 ARCHIVE EXHIBITION Erwin Wurm: One Minute Sculptures Cult Austrian artist Erwin Wurm (whose followers include Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers) uses photography and film to capture transient sculptural works. ‘One Minute Sculptures’ is an ongoing series, in development since the late 1990s, and 18 of the artist’s earliest photographs are on display at Open Eye. The series captures the artist or his models posing in spontaneous ways with everyday items, debunking the lofty paradigm of high culture. The transience of Wurm’s sculptures questions the definition of sculpture. The exhibition is playful but dark when considering the reduction of humans to objects. While exploring this element, the humour in the images is difficult to ignore and ultimately encourages plenty of smiles. One Minute Sculpture (1997) © Erwin Wurm

Turner Monet Twombly: Later Paintings Tate Liverpool Tate Liverpool’s current groundbreaking exhibition looks at the later work of the three artistic greats who, despite their differences, both in time and approach, each explore the eternal human preoccupation of mortality. around the world as well as Tate’s Turner Bequest, some of which have never been shown in the UK before.

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Cy Twombly (1928-2011) were all considered radical painters in their time and met with criticism for pushing the boundaries of conventional painting. This exhibition encourages Turner and Monet to be seen within a contemporary context while demonstrating the strong classical traits in Twombly’s paintings and sculptures.

The exhibition is not meant to be didactic, but rather encourage a response to the conversation that is occurring between the three artists via their work. Monet’s interest in Turner has been well documented but the passion Twombly had for both Turner and Monet has never been fully examined; the exhibition will give added perspective for those already familiar with Twombly’s work, while serving as an interesting introduction to those yet to discover the artist.

Through the seven themes explored in the exhibition we can discover how shared interests, values and preoccupations between the three artists resonate, alongside their questioning and challenging of each other.

Organisers of new Wirral music festival, Astral Coast, have just revealed the line-up for their inaugural outing on July 21. Sound Of Guns’ Andrew Metcalfe has been confirmed to perform a special guest acoustic set after a fantastic year, touring extensively across the UK with the band.

The UK’s second biggest carnival behind Notting Hill is just one month away and it’s here in Liverpool.

Oxygen Thieves also join the festival bill. The Wirral group have recently been signed up for management by Deltasonic Records and an eagerly anticipated single is due later this summer. The winners of Merseyrail Unsigned 2012, Beach Skulls, also feature as do The Thespians, fresh from headlining this year’s X&Y Festival in Liverpool.

Organiser Brouhaha International is celebrating Liverpool’s 2012 festival with more local, as well as international performances, than ever before.

Ellesmere Port group, Tiro Lark, join the acts performing at New Brighton Floral Pavilion, following a successful showing at this year’s Liverpool Sound City Youth Live. The wealth of emerging Wirral bands on show is maintained with Notion who play Astral Coast fresh from supporting The Lightning Seeds. The programme of live music will be complemented by guest DJs, Pillbox Vintage Clothes Fair, fairground rides and stalls, and a variety of attractions in the Festival Village. Wirral Music Studio Fallen Industries will be hosting a series of DJ workshops and The Climbing Hangar will be bringing their mobile Climbing Boulder along for the day.

During the festival, Brouhaha International’s young artists from around the world will be delivering workshops and performances to communities across Liverpool. This year sees performers from Trinidad, Martinique, Costa Rica, the Bahamas and South Africa work with schools and local groups in Brouhaha’s Community Tour ‘Emerging Artists’ Programme.

The Living Room plays host to talented American singer and songwriter, Drew De Four, this month as part of his UK tour.

A huge Colombian carnival float will dominate the procession across the city centre on July 13 in ‘Lost Paradise - the Amazon Spectacular’ from 4pm, part of Liverpool City Central’s Summer of Love.
