WELCOME
to the first issue of Lowdown, the most comprehensive guide to what’s going on in Liverpool. The city is full of talented souls who work hard to keep things buzzing but it can be hard to find out when and where it’s all happening.
THIS MONTH
We’ve worked tirelessly to bring you a resource which we hope will become invaluable. Whether you’re looking for a specific event or just want to know what you can do with your precious leisure time we guarantee there’ll be something for you.
MUSIC Q&A 10
From backstreet gigs to international festivals it’s all here. If you’re looking for avenues to a healthier lifestyle we’ve got information on walks, sporting activities and holistic therapies. Lowdown aims to showcase Liverpool’s diverse cultural offerings, as varied in size and content as they are. We aim to promote the various businesses and talent who are integral to helping keep our local economy going and the cultural scene vibrant. This month we’re featuring Nook and Willow, a local online boutique who create individual, handmade bags and accessories. We’ve spoken to local session musician Paul Walsham whose talent has taken him all over the world – hopefully an inspiration to others who are just starting out. A big thank you to everyone who has helped bring this first issue together and also to our advertisers. If you have any suggestions then please email us. MARIE & PAUL

LOWDOWN ON COMEDY
COMEDIAN RICHARD HERRING DISSECTS LOVE AND LAUGHTER
MRLOVERMAN As 90s cult comedy duo Lee and Herring, Richard Herring and partner Stewart Lee cultivated a subversive, left-wing comedy style characterised in BBC shows Fist of Fun and This Morning With Richard Not Judy. Despite both shows’ promising popularity neither were commissioned for a third series. The BBC now states their loss to television should cause heads to be hung in shame in certain quarters of the corporation. By the end of the 90s the pair had begun to pursue individual careers and Richard Herring kicked off the millennium writing 22 episodes for Al Murray’s, Time Gentleman Please. In the decade that followed Herring established himself as one of the UK’s foremost comedy writers, released a book, How Not To Grow Up and various critically acclaimed DVDs, wrote and presented radio shows and podcasts, gained a cult following for his blog, Warming Up which has not missed a daily entry since it began in 2002, published his first volume of selected blogs, Bye Bye Balham and resurrected his solo stand-up career performing sell-out runs at Edinburgh Fringe (the last of which was his 32nd appearance at the Festival to date). This month, as Herring brings number 32, What is Love, Anyway to Eric’s, we found out a little more about the workshy comedian...
WHAT WAS THE IMPETUS FOR THE THEME OF THIS TOUR AND WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR THEMES GENERALLY? I try to pick a theme or subject that interests me. Usually the subject and title come first and then I work up some ideas, but occasionally I’ll have an inkling of which way I want to go. Two years ago I did a show about Hitler, last year it was Jesus (I realised I was following the career path of Pope Benedict) and so I wanted to do a big subject. I’d been thinking about love a lot, partly because I’ve been in a relationship for four years and it’s time to think about what happens next, but also partly because at the end of Christ on a Bike, when I’d suggested love might be as delusional, faith based and unprovable as religion the audience would often be a little unsettled. They’d spent 90 minutes laughing at religion, but now I was having a go at a magical thing that they believed in. We all think we know what love is and accept it unquestioningly, yet if you think about it for a second you realise how mysterious and unknowable and ephemeral it is. Challenging the status quo and closed systems of thought is what comedy is all about. HOW DO YOU WRITE MATERIAL FOR YOUR SHOWS? I’ve written a daily blog for over nine years and sometimes something presents itself there which I think might be a good routine, or I can discuss issues and start to feel my way with them, but these days I don’t really ‘write’ shows. I think about the subject, read about it, make notes about stuff that I think might work and then I just go on stage and chat about it. I do this pretty much every night for two months and by then it coalesces into a show. A lot of it starts as something that is ad-libbed or I find the best way to say something by trial and error. At its best, with a receptive audience it’s possible to ad lib entire ideas or find the comedy or a joke that will make a routine work. I don’t tend to tape or review what I’ve done, just get back up on stage the next night and usually manage to remember the good bits, but sometimes things get lost or are not funny the next time or you miss a crucial nuance. Once the show is together I’m still changing stuff on tour, able to concentrate on nuances of getting exactly the right word or gesture or inflection. It’s never finished, merely abandoned. ||>
LOWDOWN ON COMEDY
ARE THERE ANY SUBJECTS YOU BELIEVE TO BE A ‘NO GO AREA’? I don’t think there are. There’s comedy in every subject; it’s just how you handle it and what you find to laugh at. Most jokes are about context and status and something can be very funny said by one person and deeply offensive said by another. There are jokes I wouldn’t do, mainly because they’re not good jokes or have the wrong victim. I mainly like to joke about myself, but prefer comedy that punches upwards rather than downwards. Sometimes, if said in the right circumstances an ‘offensive’ joke can make a valuable point and sometimes the only way to gain temporary power over death, illness and horrible crimes is to laugh at them. It can be a release valve. HOW HAS SOCIAL MEDIA CHANGED THE WAY YOU WORK? It’s given me the freedom to do the stuff I want to do without having to go via a committee. So the things I do for fun or that are too racey or avant garde for mainstream media I can do myself as a blog, podcast or a tweet. It’s allowed me to cultivate an audience who consume the stuff I give out for free, but then largely pay to see me live. This job can be frustrating when projects don’t get commissioned or get changed by people who don’t know anything about comedy. The internet allows me to put out ideas, in various states of preparation, that I couldn’t do elsewhere. And the blogging and podcasting has made me a better writer and comedian and provided me with ideas that I have then examined further in my shows and books. IS COMEDY A CRAFT YOU CAN LEARN OR AN INHERENT GIFT? You can learn a lot of the techniques, but I think you have to have an inherent understanding of what’s funny or what might be funny. A good comedian can find humour in places that no one else would think of looking for it. You can learn the formulas, but you need to be an expert to make them invisible or subvert them or make the leap to break the rules entirely. And it’s such an odd job and a long learning curve that I think you really have to want to do it and so probably have some talent to begin with or it will be a long and frustrating life. Which it pretty much is if you know what you’re doing too. DO YOU FEEL THE SAME CHANGES HAVE OCCURRED IN COMEDY OVER THE LAST FEW DECADES AS OTHER FORMS OF ENTERTAINMENT? Comedy, like all media and art forms, swings back and forth on a pendulum. In some ways comedy has become more commercial, but
there’s a much healthier left-field wing too and the internet has allowed smaller acts to get their work out to a big audience and make DVDs a viable option for someone like me. Whatever I was doing five years ago seems to be what’s happening in comedy. But whether I’m five years ahead or behind the pendulum I’m not sure. YOU’RE PLAYING ERIC’S IN LIVERPOOL, A COMPARATIVELY INTIMATE VENUE; DO YOU FEEL THE CAPACITY OF ARENAS LENDS ITSELF TO STAND-UP? I prefer to play more intimate venues, though obviously there is a commercial trade off. But I can’t see much point in playing to 10,000 people other than to make money. I like live comedy because it’s a live experience. And in my tours I play venues of 100 seats and some of 1000 seats, usually around 300. It’s nice to have the variety and for me 500-1000 would be the ideal combination of intimacy and commercial success. But I rarely get to play the big venues, so can’t be sure I’m not just saying that because those are the rooms I play. As a punter I don’t like seeing stuff at the O2, so imagine I wouldn’t as a performer. You might as well just watch the DVD. It’s great when you can see and sense everyone in the room and I like that whether it’s 30 people or 3000. ARE THOSE WHO ARE COMMISSIONING COMEDY MAKING DECISIONS THAT OFFER VIEWERS A DIVERSE CHOICE? I think it’s a hard job, but that maybe in today’s environment there aren’t enough commissioners prepared to take the chances involved for creating groundbreaking and brilliant TV. It’s safer to go for something that seems like something that is already successful (even though most truly successful shows are very original) and it’s hard to give a new show the room to breath that it needs. The best comedy shows take a few weeks for the audience to get into the swing of things. But for all the rubbish that makes it on there are many great shows. And if Stewart Lee can get a show on TV under his own rigorous terms then there is hope for us all. DO YOU FEEL YOU’VE HAD THE RECOGNITION YOU DESERVE FOR YOUR VARIOUS WORK? Probably not, but I’ve been lucky to work constantly for 20 years and have been involved in many TV and radio shows, which is more than many people get. I’m pretty proud of nearly everything I’ve done and nothing has really had any widespread recognition. In some ways that makes me lucky, because I’m still doing what I want to do and hardly anyone is judging me via an early success, But it’s
frustrating that sometimes my written work doesn’t get produced whereas others with more recognition, but less of a work ethic are given series after series. But the people who get me and like me stay very loyal and it might suit me to be an outsider who is a bit unfairly overlooked by TV and awards and top 10 lists. Stewart is having to cope with suddenly being recognised as a great comedian and I’m not sure it’s an entirely positive experience for him, especially as like me he’d built himself up as a bit of an outsider. DO YOU FEEL THERE ARE ANY DEEPER PSYCHOLOGICAL REASONS FOR COMEDIANS DOING WHAT THEY DO OTHER THAN USING IT AS A VEHICLE TO ENTERTAIN PEOPLE? Sometimes. And many comics are a bit needy or crazy or self-obsessed. But were they like that already or did the job make them that way? I always just liked making people laugh and people who made me laugh, which might come from some kind of neediness, but I hope was more to do with just enjoying laughing. There’s an element in us all probably that wants to show people they were wrong to treat us badly or underrate us. And some comics are driven by revenge. But though I play around with madness and eccentricity I hope that I am relatively down to earth and sane. I’m probably not though. YOU’RE ALREADY A PROLIFIC WRITER AND COMEDIAN, WHAT’S NEXT? Looks like I will just carry on doing more of the same. I’m enjoying touring for half the year and writing for half the year and filling my time with dumb podcasts and blogs. Hopefully I’ll keep experimenting. I’ve written a TV comedy drama which I’d love to get made, but I’ve been doing this long enough to know it’s unlikely. I’d quite like to become a professional snooker player, who only plays snooker against himself, quite badly, but people still want to pay to watch that. ||

LOWDOWN ON MUSIC
THE MACCABEES After a decade together, The Maccabees released their third album, ‘Given To The Wild’ in January and started a European tour in February. Since the release of their debut album, ‘Colour It In’ in 2007, the Brighton-based indie rockers have developed a deeper, darker sound from their earlier youthful heartbreak. Reviewers of The Maccabees’ offerings have documented this evolution, most notably NME’s description of second album ‘Wall Of Arms’ as ‘no longer too pop to be art and too art to be pop’ while the London Evening Standard anticipated the new sound points ‘at a more prog-rock direction’. The band themselves believe they have finally discovered what they’re truly capable of. Could 2012 be their year? Guitarist Felix White discusses the band’s development…
HOW HAS THE BAND EVOLVED SINCE ITS INCEPTION? I hope we have a fair amount. We started the band nearly 10 years ago, which is scary, but also indicates that we must have been totally different people then. We’ve slowly learnt all the time and most importantly it always feels like we’re getting better. HOW DOES THE NEW ALBUM REFLECT THIS EVOLUTION? The album was written in a totally different way to anything we’ve done before. We started to get our heads around Logic and other music programmes over the last couple of years and were excited about having more production control of our music. We began by developing ideas individually and bringing them in to each other when they were more fully formed. In the past we’ve always written in a room together with our guitars. The idea was to show an evolution through that process and freeing ourselves of limitations that we’d held as rules previously. DO YOU FEEL YOUR FAN BASE HAS ALTERED SINCE YOUR FIRST ALBUM? I think a lot of people have grown with us and I’ve noticed older people occupying the back half of venues more, but it’s difficult to tell from our end to be honest.
HAVING JUST FINISHED YOUR MOST RECENT TOUR WHAT ARE THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF TOURING GENERALLY? The highs are seeing the world and living off doing what you truly love. And those highs hugely outweigh the lows, namely total lack of sleep and no moments to yourself.
FOLLOWING THE ROOTS MANUVA COLLABORATION DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE PLANS TO WORK WITH OTHER CONTEMPORARIES? Yeah maybe. But we’ve not got around to that yet. We’re honoured to have the work of Andy Goldsworthy on the cover of the new album.
YOU’RE PLAYING LIVERPOOL THIS MONTH. YOUR GIG HERE AT THE END OF LAST YEAR GENERATED A GENUINE SENSE OF WARMTH AMONGST THE CROWD, IS THIS TYPICAL OF A MACCABEES’ GIG? People that come to Maccabees’ gigs throughout England usually bring a sense of occasion to the shows and we wouldn’t ask for better crowds in a million years. Liverpool was a lot of fun.
JUST AS JOHN PEEL CHAMPIONED MANY ARTISTS, DO YOU FEEL ANYONE HAS DONE THE SAME FOR THE MACCABEES? Early on Steve Lamacq and Zane Lowe supported the band and definitely drew more attention to us. Media exposure is of course important in the sense that if people are going to hear your music they need to be aware of you, but we hope that making good music is enough to gain that kind of exposure.
DOES THE USE OF YOUR MUSIC ON A COMMERCIAL LEVEL FEEL LIKE A POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE? A way of the world now, it’s not as easy to survive as musicians these days unfortunately. But we won’t be making a habit of branding our music and feel like we’ve found something we’re really proud of in ‘Given To The Wild’, so that kind of syncing is not the ambition for the album to live in.
WHAT DOES 2012 HOLD FOR THE MACCABEES? We’re going to celebrate the last two years of writing by going around the world and enjoying ourselves. We’re 30 in a few years so it feels like now’s the time. ||

DIAMONDS ON THE SOLES OF THEIR SHOES New material looks set to propel Brighton band, The Maccabees, from cult creatives to chart champions

ALBUMREVIEWS LANA DEL RAY BORN TO DIE
If you haven’t heard of Lana Del Ray then you can safely consider yourself on the outskirts of popular culture. Driven by the desperation for a quick and huge return of investment she has suffered from the kind of overexposure the music industry specialises in. With rumours aplenty about fakery, cosmetic surgery and rich parentage bringing her credibility into question the pedestal she was placed upon has started to look a bit wobbly. Distractions aside, Video Games was one of the songs of 2011. LDR’s sultry voice coupled with the cinematic orchestration make it easy to listen to this album. National Anthem attempts to marry a hip hop lite vocal with the lush strings but it’s mostly the Video Games theme that runs throughout. If you want to level criticism there are plenty of lyrical cliches but there is still a lot to like about this debut. There’s nothing particularly original here and you may feel that you are being manipulated by a team of pop experts but if you like well crafted, beautiful sounding pop music with hints of Twin Peaks and retro Americana then ignore the hype and dive in.
THE MACCABEES GIVEN TO THE WILD
Third album in, The Maccabees’ sound has evolved and Orlando Weeks’ vocals still stir the soul. Simple but effective keyboard textures against the drums’ abruptness create hooks to draw you in. Opener Given To The Wild sets the tone. You’re to be guided through the untamed landscape by echoing, sometimes distant but directive melodies that wash over you and sweep you along. In Feel To Follow, within a moment you’ve gone from feeling Weeks’ whispery breath on your ear to the beat of your heart as the crescendo builds with the guitar chords. This juxtaposition also occurs between tracks, reminding us of that uneven territory we’re on. From the mellow and moving Heave to the pulsating Pelican there’s a continued appeal to connecting with the sensations. The repeated theme indicates maturity by exploring a developed understanding, mirroring the developed sound. In the anthemic sound of the closer, Grew Up At Midnight, we reach the ultimate climax.
LEONARD COHEN OLD IDEAS
Leonard Cohen reflects on love, life and regret to great effect on a beautiful album which delivers everything we’ve come to expect from the man. Age has not diminished his ability to deliver brilliant lyrics with wit, warmth and self deprecation. With a voice now so dark and smokey it could cure kippers and perfect accompaniment from the angel voiced Webb sisters, you are invited to enjoy the sun slowly set on a long, illustrious career and a life well lived. If you’re not moved by this album you may wish to check your pulse. The music is warm and mellow without being maudlin and creates an intimate glow. Gypsy violin, harmonica and Hammond organ all make welcome appearances and there are at least three tracks on here that will have his previous classics hastily shuffling along to make room for them on his next greatest hits collection. Buy, enjoy and treasure. 9/10 KK ||

CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH O2 ACADEMY, FEBRUARY 3
Once upon a time, in a land far far away, Alec Ounsworth formed a band with some friends from Connecticut College and even though I have been a huge fan of that band since its formation in 2004, the thought of going to see that same band of troubadours playing in this particular room filled me with dread. And sure enough, as feared, my rose tinted memories of seeing them perform at Latitude Festival’s Main Stage in 2007 were about to be unceremoniously stamped all over. So now, beer in hand and full of trepidation, I am keeping a low profile by the sound desk at the back of the room as the house lights dim and five figures amble on to the stage in semi darkness and offer up the opening bars of ‘Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away’ from their first album. My chin may well have dropped several inches at this point as I struggled to discern anything but drums and bass pounding its way through the cacophony of guitar, keyboards and vocals noises coming through the PA.
After recovering my composure and having watched my now one time heroes struggle through a couple more dirge like representations of their material, lead vocalist Alec takes off his jacket and guides us through a rendition of ‘Details of the War’ which nearly saved the day. But no, even a smattering of material from the new album and a sprightly version of ‘Satan says Dance’ failed to do just that. I couldn’t take any more, I left, without clapping, before the finale to rush home and play their eponymous first album so I could put some of that rosy tint back into my spectacles. SELBY STRANGE
There is no doubt (in my mind) that ‘Skying’, the band’s third album and first they’ve produced, has built on the success of 2009 Mercury-nominated, ‘Primary Colours’. And plenty of positive industry reviews back me up. A combination of well-crafted pop songs, woozy guitar effects, keyboards coming to the fore and Faris Badwan’s blissful baritone make this a lustrous, hypnotic, asmospheric piece of work. Which begs the question why this live performance of ‘Skying’ distinctly lacked just what the album creates so well. There was no obvious criticism to level at the band, they held their own considering the lack lustre vibe. One crowd member certainly found the performance hypnotic and received a clout around the ear from frontman Faris when his appreciation became overwhelming. The rather imposing figure, who stood head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd, was waving his scarf so enthusiastically he nearly toppled on to the stage. Sadly it was this drama which marked a slight turning point. The crowd seemed to awaken and ‘Still Life’ created the energy that ‘I Can See Through You’ had failed to ignite. The encore encapsulated all that had been missing from the evening and ‘Moving Further Away’ ended the night on a high. Sadly, the overall mood could not be erased from my memory and a disappointed fan of the album travelled home wishing it could be.

LOWDOWN ON TALENT
INTRODUCING…
Liverpool drummer, Paul Walsham, has been a busy player on the professional circuit for several years and his resume includes stints with Elvis Costello, Simon Webbe, Craig David, Atomic Kitten, Barclay James Harvest and Patricia Kass but after taking up drumming duties with Hurt, his career has gone from strength to strength. 2011 WAS A BIG YEAR FOR YOU, TELL US ABOUT IT: I started the year touring Japan, Russia other parts of Asia and finally USA before heading back for the NME awards where Hurts won best new band. Over the summer we played major UK festivals including V, Glastonbury, T in the Park and Lattitude. Hurts finished the year with a sold out show at O2 Brixton Academy where Kylie joined us on stage.
HOW DID YOU GET THE GIG WITH HURTS? Theo and Adam were based in Manchester and wanted northern musicians. I was recommended by the management and also MD Pete Watson who I’d worked with before. Playing with Hurts involves mixing acoustic kit with electronics which I have experience of. WHAT WHERE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS? I was invited to Frankfurt Music Show by Paiste Cymbals and Sonor Drums and ended

LOWDOWN ON HEALTH
BIGBUDDHA Times are tough. The Government, the media and your bank balance are all screaming, ‘the outlook is bleak’ and for many of us it damn well is. We have to consider our spending pattern a little more than we used to. Access to credit is not the easy passage it once was and every day we wake up to news of corruption, deception and controversy centred around institutions and public figures we are ‘supposed’ to expect better from. Even in such adverse times we have much to be grateful for and we all have our own ways of realising it. Spending time with people we care about, being creative, discovering the things that actually make us happy. Sometimes we may need a little help or direction in the art of relaxation or taking time out to reconsider what makes us happy. With this in mind we found this little place in the heart of Sefton Park. L17 has been the home to The Duldzin Kadampa Buddhist Centre for 18 years now but we suspect there are plenty of you who didn’t know of its transcendental existence. It’s a Buddhist Meditation Centre and a registered charity run entirely by volunteers. The Centre runs many different classes, courses and retreats on meditation and Buddhism for all levels of experience. It’s open to everyone so you don’t have to be a Buddhist to take part.
We tried out one of their weekly drop-in classes with Resident teacher Adam Starr so we could offer a more informed prognosis. No-one likes an uninformed prognostic. And the meditation was as you might expect, very relaxing. Each week a new topic is explored and a talk given by the teacher based on Buddhist teachings with the opportunity for attendees to discuss afterwards. The topic we discussed surrounded how we can form unrealistic attachments to material possessions or people. It became clear that this can lead to unnecessary pain and suffering which can be avoided. It was both thought provoking and insightful. Classes are usually run as short courses of five to eight weeks but can be attended occasionally if you prefer. And if you want to delve deeper there are plenty more courses and classes run throughout the year.
The Duldzin’s setting in the Park works well with the Centre’s ethos and a warm welcome was offered. The soon to be re-opened World Peace Cafe will no doubt attract Park visitors to stop off for refreshments and perhaps partake in a little meaning of life exploration if they so wish. So we found a place for you to visit when you find yourself in need of some relaxation and think guided meditation is the way forward. The fact the Centre is a Buddhist one can mean as little or as much to you as you wish, the most important thing is you know about it. And we told you. ||
LOWDOWN MARCH
NEWS
Taking Care Of Business Liverpool is set to host a landmark international event, attended by the largest gathering of start-up champions from around the world. The Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) will make its first trip to Europe when it comes to the city in March.
Sea Odyssey – Little Girl Giant North Liverpool is set to become the focus of the city next month when Sea Odyssey, a 30 foot tall Little Girl Giant steps out on to the streets. Royal De Luxe, the world’s leading street theatre company, present the city’s biggest ever outdoor event from 20-22 April, telling a magical story of how the human spirit triumphs over the Titanic tragedy. The star of the show will wander around areas including Stanley Park, Walton Lane, Breck Road, Everton and Anfield and it’s hoped the event (expected to attract an audience of around 250,000) will begin the showcasing of this area’s potential development and investment opportunity. Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: ‘Sea Odyssey will be a seminal event for the city.’ ‘Tens of thousands of people visit the north end for football matches, but rarely spend any more time there, so this is the perfect opportunity to show off the area and it’s potential.’ The full route for the free event will not be released until a few weeks prior to its arrival but for more information visit www.giantspectacular.com.
Charity Cake-Bake The first woman to win BBC2’s Masterchef: The Professionals has confirmed her place on the judging panel for North West Cancer Research Fund’s 2012 Cake Bake. Merseyside winner Claire Lara, who cooked her winning dessert for the Queen, will join TV presenter Cherry Healey, LEAF tea shop owner Natalie Haywood and O-Very campaign’s chief executive Anne Jackson in the charity’s flagship event, launched to raise awareness about ovarian cancer. The competition, taking place on 2 March at Leaf on Bold Street, will see entrants bake in five categories, with one overall winner crowned the ‘O-Very Best Baker’ at the end of the day. For more information visit www.nwrcrf.co.uk.
Sir Richard Branson is headline speaker at the GEC and will be joined at the Arena and Convention Centre on 13 March by former Tesco CEO Sir Terry Leahy, founder of Lastminute.com, Martha Lane Fox and Lord Michael Heseltine, former deputy prime minister and founder of the Haymarket publishing group. The Congress, running from 9-16 March aims to unleash the potential of aspiring businesses through a week of events which will explore the concept of winning in business. Liverpool Vision, joint hosts along with the Kauffman Foundation, the world’s largest foundation dedicated to entrepreneurship, hope the event will help transform the city into a globally recognised home of entrepreneurship. For more information visit www.gec2012.com.
Armchair Support For Everyman Appeal Supporters giving £500 or more to the Everyone for the Everyman appeal will have an opportunity to name a seat in the hotly anticipated 21st century Everyman. Following public funding confirmation last April, and work behind the scenes to raise funds from trusts and foundations, the building project has already secured £27m. The first major donation from a Liverpool philanthropist, £200,000 from the Peter Johnson Foundation, marked the transition to inviting local people to get involved via the Everyone for the Everyman appeal. Donations large or small can be made as a single or regular gift, and every pound donated up to the first £250,000 will be matched by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. The official groundbreaking, marking the start of building work on site at the Hope Street theatre took place in January. For more information on how to get involved in Everyone for the Everyman, call Rowena on 0151 706 9124 or email donate@everymanplayhouse.com.

PREVIEWS 6th Spaghetti Western Orchestra Liverpool Empire
Spaghetti Western Orchestra
Spaghetti Western Orchestra swaggers into town this month recreating the saloon, spittoon and shot-gun slinging ambience of the Wild Wild West Five multi-talented musicians play more than 100 instruments, both conventional and not so (a coat hanger makes an appearance) in a celebration of the iconic collaborations between Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone. Featuring classic themes from ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’, ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’, SWO is inventive, enthralling and a marked return to the old school idea of ‘entertainment’.
Full Service, Scotty Bowers, Grove Atlantic Press The wholesome image of the golden age of Hollywood in the 40s, 50s and 60s has been blown apart by a man who claims he was a sex fixer to the stars.
Scotty Bowers book is a ‘fascinating chronicle of Hollywood’s sexual underground’, revealing the secret lives of stars including Cary Grant, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh. Bowers, a former marine, details a world far removed from the conservative idyll propagated by Hollywood studios. His starring role was as gigolo and leading men such as Tracy used him for sex while he sought out lesbian lovers for Hepburn. Despite the controversial revelations contained in the book, Bowers’ publisher said in the New York Times he’d decided to publish Full Service partly because: ‘...there seemed to be nothing meanspirited about it at all.’ Bowers himself said he’d kept silent until now because he didn’t want to hurt any of the people involved.

Stewart Lee: Carpet Remnant World
Remember the 90s when comedy wasn’t just crowbarred into every half hour slot on Dave and more about stand-up and sketches than panels of comedians quickfiring comic responses to topical questions? Stewart Lee spent the decade garnering a reputation as a cerebral, left-wing comic. Lee has since donned a variety of Worzel heads such as writer, stand-up, director, producer, script editor and rock critic. His latest television series, ‘Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle’ aired to critical acclaim and was BAFTA nominated, The Guardian said of it: ‘His performances unfurl like a stroll on a summer’s day: scenery and good companionship take precedence over destination.’ This month Stewart Lee brings his new show to the Liverpool Philharmonic and if The Guardian are to be trusted, it’ll offer welcome relief on a cold and gloomy night in March.

SAVE THE NHS Don’t believe the negative spin spouted by the people who stand to gain from the sell off. The NHS is the most important asset we have in the UK and the envy of the world. Do not allow it’s ‘not so stealthy’ privatisation. www.saveournhs.org ANOUNCEMENT “Folks, it’s time to evolve. That’s why we’re troubled. You know why our institutions are failing us, the church, the state, everything’s failing? It’s because, um – they’re no longer relevant. We’re supposed to keep evolving. Evolution did not end with us growing opposable thumbs. You do know that, right?
