WELCOME To Lowdown’s third offering.
Since April’s issue hit the streets we’ve had a couple of exciting developments...not only did we get to meet the charismatic, big-hearted Italian master of cuisine, Antonio Carluccio and chat to him at the launch of the Liverpool Carluccio’s but our new website launched and it looks fantastic. Put together by the great minds at Brighter Design it’s a perfect complement to the Lowdown brand, already well established due to the brilliant creative work of our designer, Jason Powell. The website will work alongside the printed mag to bring you the latest in ‘What’s On’ so we can keep the info we supply you with as current as possible. After April’s magical visit from the Sea Odyssey giants, May has a lot to live up to and Sound City has just the ticket. Featuring over 200 acts, the UK Music Student Awards and incorporating for the first time the Sound City Expo, the festival will celebrate its fifth birthday with a party all the kids will want to go to. In May some lucky, lucky people will get to see goth rock superstars, Placebo play at their sold out gig at Liverpool Olympia ahead of their sold out headline gig at the Sundance Film & Music Festival in London. This month also welcomes the return of LightNight, the city’s annual arts and cultural festival which forms part of a wider European initiative where galleries and museums open late staging events. As always our listings section is packed with things to do which will no doubt come in handy particularly over the bank holiday weekend. Check out our highlights for Lowdown picks of the month. So all in all another great month to be had in Liverpool, if you’ve got the Lowdown to guide you.

NEWS Raising Awareness of Poverty
Could you live on £5 for five days? This is the challenge that thousands of people will be taking from May 7-11 when they ‘Live Below the Line’ for Restless Development. The innovative campaign will involve people across the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, and ask them to spend just £1 per day on all of their food and drink, for five days. It aims to raise awareness of the 1.4 billion people across the world who live on this amount every day, having to spend just £1 per day on everything: food, healthcare, rent, travel, and education. Restless Development works with young people to tackle the issues that affect them most, including the HIV/AIDS crisis, unemployment and extreme poverty. If you would like to take the challenge, go to www.livebelowtheline.com
Opening Doors Into Dance Industry NorthWest Dance: The Lowry Youth Dance Partnership is offering young performers across Merseyside a taste of life as a dance professional, potentially leading to a place on the Centre for Advanced Training Scheme in Dance (CAT) at The Lowry. Currently in its third year, the CAT scheme is designed to offer young performers aged 12 -18 a channel into the professional dance industry, preparing them for full-time professional training. NorthWest Dance will hold two open days in Liverpool this spring to introduce potential participants to the scheme and other provision in the immediate locality. The open days, at Liverpool Theatre School on May 20 and Dolphin Dance Studios on May 27 will include a contemporary dance technique class and creative session followed by a Q&A session that gives both potential students and their parents or guardians the chance to find out more about the scheme. The Open Days are free to attend, but must be booked in advance by calling 0161 876 2018, emailing CAT@thelowry.com or visiting www.northwestdance.org.uk/CAT. To audition for the CAT, participants must be between 12 and 16 years of age.

07 Coffee Perk Me Up
Liverpool’s Hatton Garden became home to the first franchise of the famous ‘Central Perk’ coffee shop in the north west on April 20. Eight years after ‘Friends’ finished airing, this replica of the show’s defining location opened its doors to offer the city’s coffee lovers a taste of New York inspired nostalgia. Steve Trimby, Chef at Central Perk, said: ‘The whole venue is a carbon copy of the one from the show, from the decor to what’s on the menu.’ The venue has a vast range of American products on offer, including Central Perk merchandise and will host regular events including open mic nights, film nights and tea parties.
Speke Hall Summer Concert
The National Trust along with partners Cuffe & Taylor are presenting a series of Summer Concerts at Speke Hall this summer. The concerts held over June Bank Holiday weekend 2012 will culminate in a ‘Last Night of The Proms’ to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. X Factor finalists Marcus Collins and Craig Colton will open the event on June 2 along with X Factor duo 2 Shoes and local singer, Chelcee Grimes. Sunday June 3 welcomes legendary rockers, Status Quo and Liverpool band, The Christians. The event will close with Russell Watson, complete with firework finale. Local talent will also be performing after recent competition ‘Liverpool Introduces’ found four great acts to open the concerts: Esco Williams, The Mono LPs, Guardians and Man Get Out. Lowdown is offering readers a chance to win a pair of tickets to see Russell Watson and a pair for Status Quo, just answer one of the following questions. For Russell Watson tickets: What is the title of Russell Watson’s new album, due for release this month? For Status Quo tickets: What is the title of Status Quo’s first single? Send your answer to: info@thelowdownmagazine.com and include your name, preferred email address, telephone number and postal address. Closing date for entries is 25th May 2012
Antonio Carluccio in Liverpool We were lucky enough to have a coffee and a chat with the very charming Antonio Carluccio at the opening of Liverpool’s first Carluccio’s in Metquarter. After telling us he started cooking using family recipes, he said he now considers himself to be a cook not a chef and he believes modesty is important. He cited one of his favourite chefs as Michel Roux. With a new TV series and book just out, Antonio said he has no plans to retire anytime soon and on a personal level, after being married three times, wouldn’t rule it out again. Since the first Carluccio’s opened in London in 1998 there have been more than 50 additions to the chain both in Britain and abroad.

SEAODYSSEY
GIANTSPECTACULAR Liverpudlians were transformed into Lilliputians during the penultimate weekend in April when Royal De Luxe’s Sea Odyssey came to town. An estimated 600,000 people watched the three-day production, organised to commemorate the Titanic disaster. The council has predicted there will be significant economic benefits generated by Giant Spectacular but its immediate effects
could be seen across the faces of all those lining the streets waiting to catch a glimpse of the three marionettes who were then so swiftly taken to their hearts. After being treated to a spellbinding spectacle of street theatre and watching the drama
played out between the giant puppets (who graced the city centre and north Liverpool with their presence) all those who had come to watch in awe, waved the 30ft little girl giant, her playful dog, Xolo and her 50ft diver Uncle off to sea.

LOWDOWN ON MUSIC
DREADLOCK HOLIDAY
Since the release of his chart topping debut album, ‘Hand Built By Robots’, the fourth best selling LP of 2007, acoustic guitar genius, Newton Faulkner has continued to garner his reputation as a ‘one man band’. Despite a Brit nomination back in 2008, Faulkner has built a loyal following through appreciation of his ability rather than courting publicity or manufactured hype. His third album, ‘Write It On Your Skin’ will be released in July and he plays Liverpool this month as part of his UK tour, to a sell out crowd, no doubt waiting in eager anticipation of what will be a unique performance in his own inimitable style. YOU’VE CITED ERIC ROCHE AS THE MAIN INFLUENCE ON YOUR CAREER, HOW DID HE INSPIRE YOU? He was my guitar teacher at The Academy of Contemporary Music, he was head of guitar and he started mentoring me from quite early on in my time there. We just clicked and got on really well. He’s been a massive influence on me, on my playing style and my whole attitude to music. He became a good friend. WHAT DID ATTENDING THE ACADEMY OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR CAREER? Many positives actually, I learnt a lot. I think with all the kind of ‘rock schools’ you just have to take out the bits that you want and ignore the things you don’t. Unless you want to be a session player then the goal posts are different. The business studies aspect of it was really useful because I signed a record contract within a few of years of leaving and I would have been really scared and confused if I hadn’t done the music industry business studies. THE INJURY TO YOUR HAND IN 2008 GAVE YOU THE TIME TO EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT SOUNDS ON YOUR SECOND ALBUM. TO WHAT EXTENT DO YOU FEEL FATE PLAYS A PART IN YOUR CAREER? A large amount, because that incident was obviously incredibly unlucky but I think it’s more about making the most of opportunities or how you respond to luck, good or bad. Whatever’s going to happen will happen so it’s more about what you do with things once they transpire. There’s lots of weird stuff that
goes on so it’s more about how capable you are to embrace it as an artist. ‘HAND BUILT BY ROBOTS’ AND ‘REBUILT BY HUMANS’; IS THIS A DELIBERATE THEMATIC CONNECTION BETWEEN YOUR FIRST TWO ALBUMS? I quite like the idea of the two albums being linked, a kind of duology. There was lots of ways they were linked, for example the same producer produced the second as produced a lot of the singles on the first and even the album covers used similar colours. DO YOU FEEL YOUR MUSICAL STYLE AND DELIVERY IS PARTICULARLY SUITED TO LIVE PERFORMANCES, MORE SO THAN OTHER ARTISTS? I love being in the studio but I enjoy the live performances the most. Because it’s just me on my own, I really rely on the audience for that connection, because there’s only so much I can do. So I use the audience to do things, so it’s kind of a group effort. I like the fact that live performances are so instinct based, whereas in the studio it’s much more ‘brain’ based. YOU’VE BEEN DESCRIBED AS BEING QUITE ANONYMOUS, DESPITE THE CRITICAL ACCLAIM YOUR WORK HAS RECEIVED. DO YOU AGREE AND IF SO DOES IT CONCERN YOU? No I quite like it and I can kind of do what I want to do. And people are so chilled out with me, it’s really nice. I think there is a barrier that can be created when your face is well known but with me that barrier doesn’t exist so people interact with me like they kind of see me an old friend.
And also my face hasn’t been on any of the albums so I’m enjoying the anonymity and feel like it’s all at a manageable point. HOW DOES YOUR THIRD ALBUM, DUE FOR RELEASE THIS YEAR COMPARE TO THE FIRST TWO? The third album has a very different vibe, there are a lot of things that have developed over time. The third album was really written to be played live whereas the second was written to be recorded. I was trying to play the radio game on the second one a bit too much and I think I just needed to do stuff for me and for the live performances. There was a lot of pressure on the second album. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER HAS CHANGED FOR THE BETTER AND FOR THE WORSE IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DECADES? So much has changed but I think the live industry is pretty solid and healthy, probably more so than it’s ever been. Some of the things that have stayed the same probably need to change. Selling records and making money out of recorded music is really tricky, but the live thing is thriving and kind of keeps everything else afloat. WHAT CAN THE LIVERPOOL AUDIENCE EXPECT FROM YOUR GIG THIS MONTH? Well it’s me completely on my own. It’s quite an interesting show, it’s more about the songs than previous tours have been, the songs on the third album really stand up. I’ll be playing a lot of stuff from the new album and a bunch of old stuff too. ||

LIVE REVIEWS
STEVE HUGHES SLAUGHTERHOUSE APRIL 3
Steve Hughes enters a full house with his head almost touching the ceiling. His long haired, bearded appearance makes him look like he just escaped from middle earth or the Hawkwind crew bus...
He settles in quickly, “Is this a stage or a f****** pallet!” and his combination of childlike logic and anti-authoritarian views mean his material ranges widely from the mundane to heavy political and philosophical issues. Subjects include why magic mushrooms are the only illegal ones despite the fact that the others can kill you, rampant consumerism, war, problems in the Middle East and why he had to pay to escape from the Wirral after taking a wrong turn into the tunnel. “People ask me how did I make the transition from drumming to comedy? Easy I just moved the drums...” The heavier material is dealt with later on when he feels he has won the crowd over but despite the subject matter his likeable manner and jovial delivery mean it’s not short on humour and the majority of people in the room are laughing from start to finish.
No mean feat considering this is his first headline tour. Credit must also go to warm up act Sully O Sullivan who did did exaclty that in a confident manner with plenty of laughs. His rising popularity has seen Steve appear on mainstream TV but much of his material relies on a freedom of speech not usually afforded by the medium and is better suited to a live show. Like the long tradition of comedians such as Bill Hicks, George Carlin and the like, Steve Hughes doesn’t just want you to laugh. He wants you to take the red pill and see how far down the rabbit hole you can go. Listen at your own peril this one goes up to 11. || PT
15 After reading Don Miguel Ruiz’ ‘The Four Agreements’, ‘a practical guide to personal freedom’, Webb has produced a work that ‘represents the culmination of a life-altering spiritual journey’ for the singer-songwriter, and it’s visually apparent. Webb’s on-stage presence exudes a sense of calm and it permeates the audience. It reached me at least.
CHRISTIAAN WEB LEAF, APRIL 19
The homely, slouchy atmosphere upstairs at Leaf provided perfect setting for an outing of tracks from Christiaan Webb’s debut solo album.
Eldest son of songwriting legend, Jimmy Webb, Christiaan built up a fan base in the UK touring extensively with his two siblings, Justin and James with The Webb Brothers back in the late 90s, early noughties. Now concentrating on his solo career, Webb is touring with his own offering ‘A Man Possessed’. His soulful vocals are somehow reassuring and added to the feeling of intimacy at the gig. It was like being amongst friends and definitely aided a warm reception to the songs being performed. Opener, ‘Westward Man’ and ‘My Best Intentions’ grabbed the audience’s attention with their punchy beats and pulsating keys. Earnest ballads such as ‘Midnight Moon’ and ‘Fountain of Youth’ showcased Webb’s melancholy vocals; in Midnight Moon their fragility underlined the reflective lyrics. Webb’s band, The Sweet Lords were a pleasure to watch as their enthusiasm was palpable. The lead guitarist was so fervent in his solo guitar piece during ‘I Can’t Believe You’re Gone’ my gig-buddy for the night remarked, ‘no wonder he’s so thin’ - which made me laugh. That nod to The Webb Brother’s back catalogue along with ‘The Liar’s Club’ and ‘Fluorescent Lights’ went down a treat. The evening ended with just Webb and his keyboard on stage and a rendition of ‘Last Night On Earth’. With its contemplative lyrics, the song reinforced the inspiration behind the album, of a spiritual approach to life.
WOW
PHILHARMONIC, APRIL 12
WOW at the Philharmonic Hall promised, ‘A Celebration of the Music, Lyrics and Dance of Kate Bush’, a bit of a mouthful for what was basically a tribute act. If you’ve ever witnessed the dreadful cringeyness of a dodgy Elvis or fat Freddie Mercury, all cheap outfits and fake facial hair, you’d be forgiven for fearing the worst.
Thankfully, the wonderful Maaike Breijman and her talented band of musicians and dancers delivered a very impressive and hugely entertaining homage to a legendary talent.
When somebody is either courageous or foolhardy enough to attempt a performance as the quirky and wholly original grand dame of popular music, the potential for crossing the line between tribute and parody is fairly obvious.
It earned them a warm and richly deserved standing ovation at the end of what must have been an exhausting night’s work, particularly for Miss Breijman, who sang and danced her way through a host of classic songs.
All the hits were covered as well as a number of album tracks. The band were faultless throughout, the lead guitarist even managing an admirable turn as Peter Gabriel, dueting on ‘Don’t Give Up’. If I were to be critical, the lighting and effects weren’t all they could have been and the gaps between songs, to allow for costume changes, felt a little clunky at times. But that’s just nitpicking, ultimately a thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. WOW indeed. GB

ALBUMREVIEWS DAMON ALBARN DR DEE
JACK WHITE BLUNDERBUSS
THE DANDY WARHOLS THIS MACHINE
Soundtrack to last year’s show of the same name and an Afro-pastoral folk opera, combining ‘English choral and instrumentation alongside modern, West African and Renaissance sounds.’ The album is ‘18 tracks of songs and music inspired by the life of John Dee, mathematician, polymath and advisor to Elizabeth I.’
Jack White’s solo debut is being called a breakup album with songs of sadness, anger and guile but with an amicable split and his recent ex-wife singing backing vocals to great effect on a few tracks, maybe he’s just making use of his re-discovered time.
The Dandy Warhols are back with their eighth album. ‘This Machine’ has the same laid back, cool vibe the band seems to effortlessly produce, but the music has a harder, slightly industrial edge. The harder production gives hints of The Pixies, Bowie (Scary Monsters), Bauhaus and of course The Velvet Underground.
Albarn has received some criticism for this album being indulgent or even pastiche. I care little whether he’s being indulgent, only that what he offers is well done, and this is. As for being pastiche, to make an informed judgement I’d need to have a good listen to Purcell and other composers who he’s accused of creating a poor imitation of and frankly I don’t have time. I’d rather listen to the album I’m reviewing in order to judge if I like it. After listening, I feel I missed out when I didn’t get to see the show, the live performance of this music would have been quite something. I was a fan of Albarn’s vocals before listening to Dr Dee and my appreciation hasn’t waned since. The eclectic mix of 16th-century instruments, 12th-century African instruments and contemporary orchestral instruments make this album intriguing, yet easy to listen to. The music and vocals create emotion and mystery and ultimately drama. And there are multiple depths to the work. Listen to it purely for pleasure and become absorbed in the different emotions it evokes. Do some research and experience it with an understanding of its inspiration or do more research, get to know the mysterious figure behind the work (Dr Dee not Damon Albarn) and you’ll hear so much more. Whatever your preference, the piece is to be admired. . 8/10 MM ||
The album has his customary nod to times when music was important and artists were great. As expected, the man who doesn’t have a mobile phone likes to do things the old fashioned way and the steel guitars, fender rhodes, piano and violin complement his songwriting well. The opening track ‘Missing Pieces’ starts with a mellow rhodes and builds up with his trademark staccato vocal style. It has a short but great sounding guitar solo, reminiscent of Mahavishnu, and one of the few solos on the album. ‘Sixteen Saltines’ could be straight off Elephant and title track ‘Blunderbuss’ has a sad melodic country feel which, along with the piano led ‘Hypocritical Kiss’, are both strong tracks. Jack White continues to inhabit and perpetuate the retro gothic world of his own creation that Tim Burton couldn’t improve upon. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. 7.5/10 PT ||
It opens with the distorted bass and close vocals of ‘Sad Vacation’. ‘Autumn Carnival’ starts with a great drum roll into repetitive guitar line. ‘Alternative Power To The People’ is a driving instrumental and ‘Well They’re Gone’ is a slow, dreamy, delicate song with some nice melodies and a rhythmic drum pattern - a highlight along with ‘16 tons’, a sleazy, driving cover of the Merle Travis song. It’s not an album to dance around the house to and it doesn’t have any of the obvious smash hits that gave them global recognition, but it’s a good listen and has plenty of songs that are interesting and definitely grow on you. It is a darker and more sophisticated affair, no more naked beach parties here, but it still does have attitude. 8/10 PT ||

WHENDOVESCRY Swedish electronic duo, Niki & The Dove are creating quite a buzz at the moment, not least because they’ve just come fifth in the BBC’s Sound of 2012; a list chosen by 184 UK-based ‘tastemakers’ (experts in current and new music) which highlights the most promising new music for the year ahead. Gustaf Karlöf and Malin Dahlström first met making music for theatre in Gothenburg in 1999 and worked together again in folk band, The Dora Steins. Re-emerging in 2010 as N&TD, this month sees the release of their debut album, Instinct. Dahlström’s ethereal vocals, backed up by walls of synths and pounding drums, combined with their charismatic live performances and their eclectic mix of sounds and ideas make N&TD an interesting proposition. SCANDINAVIAN CULTURAL OFFERINGS APPEAR TO BE VERY MUCH ‘IN VOGUE’ AT THE MOMENT. HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR CULTURE OR THE ENVIRONMENT YOU GREW UP IN INFLUENCES YOUR MUSIC/ITS CHARACTERISTIC QUALITY? It is probably impossible NOT being influenced by your environment. And that is a good thing we think. Hopefully we will learn something about each other. But it is difficult to mention any specific signs of us coming from Scandinavia. YOU WRITE MUSIC TOGETHER BUT MALIN WRITES THE LYRICS ALONE, WHICH PART OF THE PROCESS COMES FIRST OR DO THEY OCCUR ALONGSIDE ONE ANOTHER? It really intervenes. One thing gives birth to the other. A lyric can influence music and music can influence lyrics. HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND WRITING MUSIC FOR THEATRE CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR CURRENT SOUND/SONGWRITING?
Not at all actually. Writing for theatre is a completely different thing, where you are a part of something bigger. You have to consider the other fragments of a theatre and work together with these.
don’t need a daytime job to pay the pizza. On another level we learned that you have to be careful not losing your direction and not losing your heart. To remember why we’re doing this. That it’s really about the music in the end.
YOU’VE DISCUSSED THAT REMEMBERING THE ESSENCE/MEANING OF YOUR MUSIC IS IMPORTANT WHEN YOU’RE AT THE PRODUCTION STAGE. WHAT IS ITS ESSENCE/MEANING?
YOU’VE MOVED TO LONDON AS YOUR RECORD LABEL IS BASED THERE. DOES THIS REFLECT YOUR MUSIC HAS BEEN MORE WELL RECEIVED HERE THAN IN SWEDEN?
The essence/meaning is subjective we think. One song probably means one thing for someone and something completely different for another. But for us it’s important to be honest to ourselves. That is the meaning and essence.
We don´t think (or hope) that.
YOUR LIVE PERFORMANCES HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS SHOWS RATHER THAN EVENTS AND YOUR VIDEOS LOOK LIKE A LOT OF THOUGHT AND WORK HAS GONE INTO MAKING THEM. HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS ASPECT OF YOUR EXPERIENCE/ OFFERING AS A BAND? Of course you want to have a quality in every little step you take. That is important we think. Even if it’s just performing for three people. Or making a low budget video. WHAT’S CHANGED FOR YOU AS A BAND OR INDIVIDUALS SINCE SIGNING THE RECORD DEAL? The foremost thing is that we can focus and concentrate 100% on our own music. You
YOU RECENTLY PLAYED AT SXSW? HOW WAS THAT EXPERIENCE? We were warned that it would be very hectic. But we had a great time actually. A life time memory. Imagine 9000 bands in one city. There was music exactly everywhere. Fascinating. YOU’RE PLAYING SOUND CITY THIS MONTH IN LIVERPOOL? HAVE YOU PLAYED HERE BEFORE? No. We really look forward to it. We’ve played in Liverpool before though and really liked the city. FINALLY, HOW DO YOU FEEL ACCOLADES SUCH AS THE NOMINATION FOR BBC’S SOUND OF 2012 INFLUENCE YOUR RECEPTION/MUSIC CAREER? We are of course really honoured. It gives you a greater confidence. And of course this gave us a push in the right direction. Let’s see what the future brings.... ||

LOWDOWN ON BOOKS
THE HURRICANE PORT A Social History Of Liverpool, Andrew Lees Scousers believe they live in a special place, one that has more in common with Salvador da Bahia, New Orleans or Gdansk than anywhere in England, and the city has always punched above its weight. In less than a hundred years, however, Liverpool’s image has declined from a major mercantile player known as the Second City of the Empire to what some social commentators have described as a cultural backwater remembered largely as the place where the Beatles were born. In The Hurricane Port, Andrew Lees reveals how Liverpool’s pre-eminence in the slave trade left an indelible scar on the psychogeography of the city. He also explores the roots of Liverpool’s contrary nature, its rebelliousness and its hedonism, as well as some of the recent hurricanes that have battered the city, including the anger of Toxteth, Militants’ stand against Margaret Thatcher and the murder of James Bulger. In this distinctly personal account, Lees defines the characteristics of this Celtic enclave, with her loud-mouthed, big-hearted people who have created a city quite different from anywhere else in the world. WHAT WAS THE IMPETUS BEHIND WRITING THE BOOK? A combination of my own deep seated sentimentality for the city of my childhood and what I perceived as the real need for a non academic book that would describe the rise and fall of a great seaport. As I wrote it I began to realise how Liverpool had been shaped by Europe’s hunger for sugar and how as it grew and grew through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it played such an important role in the formation of the Atlantic community. I also realised that enslavement was a cross to bear, not only for the blacks taken from their homes in West Africa to Barbados and Virginia on which Liverpool’s first fortunes were predicated,
but for the dockers and the sailors whose lives underpin much of the city’s exceptionalism. Liverpool has turned inwards in the last twenty five years but its people still dream of fantastic adventures and mythical departures. THE BOOK HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS ‘A WARTS AND ALL’ DEPICTION OF LIVERPOOL. WAS IT A DIFFICULT TASK TO APPROACH THE ‘LESS POSITIVE’ ISSUES ON A SUBJECT MATTER MANY WILL BE PROTECTIVE OVER...THEIR CITY? Although a sintelliner (born in St Helens) Liverpool has always been my city (both my parents are from Manchester). I was aware when writing the book of the particular Scouse sensitivity, especially to outsiders, but really did not want to write a book that perpetuated an unrealistic view of the city. My book can be looked on as a love letter to the city but one written to a wife of twenty five years, where love remains as strong as it ever was but flattery and deceit would now be pointless and even destructive. I hope ‘Hurricane Port’ will help the city I love come to terms with its dark history and move forwards again to become a world beater in everything it embarks upon. Liverpool is still full of brilliant, imaginative and amusing people. WHAT DO YOU HOPE READERS TAKE FROM THE BOOK? There are so few readable accounts of the city’s fascinating history and I would like to think ‘Hurricane Port’, while being a personal view from an outsider, would be a thought provoking and informative source of information for both Scousers and visitors who want to learn more about Liverpool. All proceeds from the sale of ‘Hurricane Port’ go to Cure Parkinsons. ||

LOWDOWN ON FILM
FILMREVIEW The Cabin In The Woods (15)
Beginning as a standard Slasher flick with attractive college students going on a weekend getaway to party and ignore all the obvious bad omens, the film takes a brilliant turn when it becomes apparent there is something much more sinister than ‘big lad with an axe’ at work here. A self described ‘loving hate letter’ to more recent horror films, it beautifully parodies the creative process behind gore-fests such as ‘Cabin Fever’ and ‘Hostel’ while lovingly referencing the oldies in a way that will make any horror fan smile. Although it’s fairly lacking in scares, it’s certainly one of the most original films in a long time and trust me when I say it doesn’t hold back, pushing every idea to its extreme. If you’re a fan of horror you should have already seen this, if you’re not it’s definitely still worth a watch as it’s pure fun with plenty of hilarious moments and a truly jaw-dropping climax that will both disgust and delight. INTRODUCING…
Local musician and promoter Johnny Sands is becoming firmly embedded in the Liverpool music scene, not least due to his resident weekly open mic night at Leaf, ‘Out Of The Bedroom’. With high profile supports under his belt, for Wild Beasts, Django, Django and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and a self-funded debut album, ‘Postcards’ just released, Sands is making his mark.
HOW’S THE OPEN MIC NIGHT AT LEAF BEING RECEIVED? Really well. I’ve been doing it for three years now and some nights we’re struggling to fit everyone in. It was always intended as a high calibre open mic, Jools Holland style with a focus on showcasing original material as much as possible. I open and close the night but it’s more about the other acts (who I really enjoy meeting and hearing) so it’s a lot different to my solo performances. WHAT WAS YOUR PATHWAY INTO MUSIC? I taught myself to play guitar when I was 14 after being influenced by music I listened to on mix tapes my dad made for me. The Blue Nile, Talk Talk, Neil Young and The Beatles were all early influences. Singing was a natural accompaniment to the guitar playing for me. When I was 22 I formed a band, ‘Vandal In Berlin’ and spent the next five years playing with them. After that I carried on as a solo artist. It’s been pretty much a DIY approach throughout my career.
FOR THOSE WHO HAVE YET TO HEAR YOU PERFORM, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF MUSIC YOU MAKE? It’s difficult to describe a style with just one or two words but possibly Electroacoustic. I’d say it’s kind of Neil Young/The Strokes/ The Blue Nile. AND FINALLY WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON AT THE MOMENT? As well as the night at Leaf I also host a weekly gig, the Acoustic Sessions at Heebie Jeebies. It started last spring and it’s on a Saturday afternoon. It was great during the summer because we did it out in the courtyard and put a BBQ on so it’s a nice, relaxed atmosphere, but it’s proven just as popular in the winter months when we had to move inside. I’ve just recorded a single, Cave Man, to be released this month, I’m promoting the album and I’m really looking forward to playing at Sound City on the 18th. || www.soundcloud.com/johnnysands www.itunes.apple.com/gb/album/postcards

PREVIEWS 13th May
Elvis Costello The Revolver Tour, Liverpool Empire Elvis Costello brings the ‘Spectacular Spinning Songbook’ to Liverpool this month following an acclaimed U.S run last year. An overture of five uninterrupted rock and roll tunes start the performance after which audience members will be invited onstage to spin ‘The Wheel’, featuring 40 song-titles, including hits, rarities and unexpected covers and select the next song. They will then be given the option to enter the ‘Hostage to Fortune Go-Go Cage’ while their selection is performed or take a seat in the on-stage ‘Society Lounge’ where light refreshments will be served. Rolling Stone said the show combines: ‘the kitsch of a game show and lounge act...when he wasn’t singing or slamming at his guitars, Costello worked the stage like a burlesqueclub emcee, cracking wise at a mile a minute and spinning a dandy’s walking stick.’ Try not to miss it, the last time ‘The Spectacular Spinning Songbook’ was allowed to choose Costello’s set list was 25 years ago.

The Handsome Family, Leaf New Mexico based husband and wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks (The Handsome Family) have recorded a series of albums over the past two decades that has established them as one of America’s finest songwriting partnerships and seen them hailed as ‘country music’s answer to White Stripes’. Their music holds echoes of Americana in the truest sense - from medieval ballad to Appalachian holler, Tin Pan Alley and punk rock. Their live performances are noted for the entertaining banter that occurs between the band members on stage and with the audience, a contrast to their songs’ preoccupation with darkness, death and the macabre. Harvest Sun Promotions bring the duo to Leaf to play material from their upcoming release.
The city’s annual arts and cultural festival, LightNight returns on May 18 offering a whirlwind of exciting activities and events. More than 50 of Liverpool’s best arts and heritage venues will throw open their doors and feature over 70 free events including special underground tours, a mass sing-along, candle-lit labyrinth, fascinating exhibitions and open studios, Chinese arts showcase, architecture tours, ceildihs, spectacular light projections, street theatre, live music and lots more.
