It’s October already, the heating is on and the winter coats are out of the cupboard. Never mind, as usual there’s lots happening to distract from the wonderful British weather. There are festivals and exhibitions galore, so many in fact we couldn’t fit them all in, The Irish Festival, Afrovibes, Biennial, Black History Month and the Lantern Festival are just a few... On the cover we have The Hummingbirds who are currently causing quite a stir in the music industry and the first unsigned act to make our cover. We also have interviews with the legendary Lol Creme from 10cc/ Godley and Creme and Heaven 17 frontman Glenn Gregory who is just one of many talented people visiting Liverpool in October. The more perceptive amongst you may notice a few changes this month. We’ve condensed our listings to give us more room for features but don’t worry there is still just as many great things in there, just in a smaller space. We’ve also added a local sport section for those of you out there who wanted it. (We do listen so keep your suggestions coming) and we will be adding more new sections over the coming months. Finally the Hillsborough report has left many people around the world shocked and stunned by the ‘truth’. Blaming innocent people for the sheer incompetence and wrongdoing that led to Britain’s worst sporting disaster was despicable. 23 years is a long time to wait for apologies and without this report they probably wouldn’t have been made at all. This is by no means the end but on the day the report was released a weight was lifted from the city and replaced by a terrible sadness for all those lost and affected but also pride for all those who battled to save lives on the day and battled for the truth for 23 years. NEWS &PREVIEWS Afro Vibes Festival: 1st-21st October The Black – E will be celebrating all things South African this October as Afrovibes – an international festival of dance, theatre, music and spoken word from South Africa and beyond, makes its biennial return to the UK.

The Black-E prepares to be at the heart of celebrations as the festival comes to Liverpool for the very first time. From 11 – 13 October the venue has 3 days of the very best in South African music, physical theatre and food. On Thursday 11th October the exuberant 10 piece Sibikwa Orchestra give audiences a lively exchange of rhythms and beats in an excellent example of innovative crossover music as Afrobeat meets Township Jazz. On Friday 12th and Saturday 13th October The Black-E welcomes Sibojama who will present Thirst. Written and directed by James Ngcobo and choreographed by Gregory Maqoma, Thirst depicts the fortunes and misfortunes of three water carriers from an African village which is in dire need of water. On one fateful journey to discover the source of their dried out river they encounter mysterious characters, riddles and provocation. This unique, magical and innovative performance piece, which is suitable for all ages, pulsates with powerful symbolism and potent imagery set against an intriguing soundscape and infuses traditional dance, physical theatre, song and with African fables and storytelling. At the heart of the festival at the Black-E is a South African Township serving food, drinks and snacks with a South African theme. The public will have the opportunity to socialise and debate with the artists and other visitors, see works on display and to experience live music. Afrovibes is a biennial festival of arts from South Africa and beyond. Originating from the Netherlands, the festival is now in its ninth edition. The festival first launched in UK in 2010 and plans are already in place for a return in 2014. Between 1-20 October Afrovibes will be visiting 11 venues across the UK in a true celebration of South African culture.

Twisted Fairytales Vogue Ball Camp & Furnace Saturday 6th October

The Vogue Ball is a dance event like no other in the UK – where club culture meets high art and Vogue teams (known as ‘houses’) come together from far and wide to compete for dance supremacy, wearing fabulous creative costumes that are often as lavish as Cinderella’s ball-gown! This year’s event will take on a amazing Twisted Fairytales theme bringing its debauched gagaesque magic to Camp and Furnace, turning the city’s most happening new venue into a catwalk spectacular reminiscent of 1970s/80s New York. The Twisted Fairytales Vogue Ball asks its princes, princesses and evil queens to display a similar fierce attitude through the artisan performance battles. Dancers will strut, pose and sashay their way through tales of old, bringing them slap bang into the 21st century.

Liverpool Irish Festival 14th-30th October This year is the ninth Liverpool-Irish Festival and it’s shaping up to be the most exciting yet, with a programme of music, film, drama, heritage, literature and lectures to suit everybody. Highlights include a weekend of free activities down on the Albert Dock in the heart of historic Liverpool, the second Irish Sea Sessions at the Philharmonic Hall, a week of early evening Irish film at FACT, Beckett at The Unity and the redoubtable Damien Dempsey with Amsterdam at the O2 Academy.

Máire Ní Chathasaigh is one of Ireland’s most influential traditional musicians, renowned for developing a variety of new harp techniques. Her duo with Hertfordshire-born guitarist Chris Newman started with their debut at the 1987 Cambridge Folk Festival and has since gone on to see them play in 21 countries and across four continents. Superb virtuoso musicianship and singing in the picturesque and intimate setting of Sefton Park Palm House make this a very special event.

Madnice Marauders Everyone knows too well about Liverpool’s thriving band and dance communities. However, given the dynamics of the city’s unique social make-up, it’s perhaps surprising that it hasn’t fostered a hip-hop scene with similar support and recognition. One event trying to change this status quo is Madnice Marauders. You’ve got Juicy in The Magnet on a Thursday night, as well as the recently opened Maya on Back Colquitt Street, but Madnice offers something different. Through a fusion of original rhyme and beat, the night brings some of the world’s hottest MCs and DJs to the Merseyside region. Having already showcased a myriad of talent, ranging from local boy SertOne to LA’s Kutmah, the event now returns with one hell of a bill. In its new Zanzibar location (the spiritual home of legendary hip-hop night No Fakin’), Madnice is ready to hit us with Jehst – described as the UK’s “freshest, most relevant home-grown wordsmith and producer”. Also getting a spot is Ras G, a pioneer in the development of West Coast production, who’ll be enjoying his first Liverpool performance. Yet behind all this boom bap bop stands a lad with a mission. Adam McAleavey, 23, started Madnice Marauders just under a year ago and co-ordinates the chunk of its activity. “We appeal to a conscious hip-hop listener – scrap that, a conscious music listener”, he points out. “We’re trying to develop a community of like-minded individuals within the city; people who respect the heritage of hip-hop but who are also looking at ways to reinvent the genre”. This is certainly a lofty ambition but not one beyond reach. Quickly becoming a hub for all things hip-hop in Liverpool, Madnice Marauders is a promotion on the up! Surely this is a status that will be confirmed by its next set of shows.

Halloween Lantern Carnival

Sefton Park 28th October Sefton Park, Liverpool will be brimful of lanterns, magic and mysterious sightings on the last Sunday of October, as the Lantern Company once again light up the park with the enchanting Halloween Lantern Carnival. As well as hundreds lanterns made by people from all over Liverpool you can also expect to see the giant floating Dreamer as she falls asleep, and take a peek at the dreams inside her sleeping head, courtesy of Delirium Lumens, French masters of the surreal, whose astonishing live projections create huge vividly coloured landscapes full of imaginary beings. For those of an adventurous nature, you can wander through the park, where you’ll discover still more extraordinary dreamscapes, talking stags, dancing wolves and Things that go Bump in the Night, as they light up along the route. If you feel sleepy, you can even slip into bed yourself and have your own dreams or nightmares revealed! A field of floating fire flowers, huge illuminated megaliths, a gaggle of gamblers, dream doctors, diviners and fortune tellers will set your head spinning and make this unforgettable night a glorious feast for the senses. O2 Academy Liverpool Friday 26th October The platinum selling Liverpool band Space were never off the telly in the 90’s and had a string of memorable hits including Female of the Species, Neighbourhood, Avenging Angels, Me and you Verses the World and The Ballad of Tom Jones. They are back in October for a very special hometown show. The line-up features original band members Tommy Scott (vocals/guitar) and Franny Griffiths (keyboards). Along with Phil Hartley (double bass/bass), Ryan Clarke (vintage keys) and drummer Allan Jones who will replace Andy Parle who sadly died in 2009. They are supported by The Mono LP’s and Edgar Jones.

Is the Toffee curse finally broken? Read any of the stories on Everton’s positive start to the season and you are bound to come across the term ‘slow-starters’ and how the Toffees are maybe showing signs of deviating from this label they have acquired over David Moyes’ tenure. As an Everton supporter, I have had to get used to hearing this label in reference to my club, and this accusation has been somewhat justified in recent seasons. Whether the poor run of early form happens from game one (such as the 2010-2011 campaign in which Everton amassed just three points from their opening six games) or a few matches later, it has nevertheless become a common trend for the tag to resurface for the blue half of Merseyside. So far, the Toffees have had their best start to a campaign for five years, improving upon the positive opening they made last season. However, what followed Everton’s solid start last year was a familiar dip in early season form which saw the accumulation of six losses in nine matches. So what is to say that the club will not follow their apparently pre-written script and have to play catch up later on in this season too? An argument for Everton continuing their impressive start is the return of Steven Pienaar, following his signing of a permanent contract. Last season, on-loan Pienaar had arguably his most impressive campaign for the Toffees, amassing the highest amount of assists (6) from anyone in the squad. This was despite the January acquisition only playing for half of the season, and being cup-tied from the F.A. Cup due to his Tottenham appearances. Following the midfielder’s permanent re-signing this summer, I joined with many other Blues fans in a feeling of genuine excitement that Moyes had re-invested in a player who was and, for all intents and purposes would return to be, a key player in the Everton set-up. A player who had not figured in Tottenham’s first team plans during his short spell at White Hart Lane, due to a combination of injury and competition for places, immediately returned as a key player and an important creative piece in Everton’s squad. An example of a perfect club and

player partnership it could be argued. But of course Pienaar’s success at the tail-end of last season and into the current campaign has not been purely down to his individual talent. The South African has been able to reform the creative partnership he and Leighton Baines have previously thrived in. The duo have been responsible for Everton’s biggest creative threat so far during this campaign. Following Everton’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle, Baines topped the Premier League chart for chances created for teammates (19), a stat made all the more impressive when considering the left-back’s position. Newcastle’s defensive 4-5-1 formation in this game of course aided Baines’ freedom to advance forward, but take nothing away from his impressive build up play with Pienaar, which was directly responsible for the left-back scoring Everton’s first goal.

four represents a fantastic long-term prospect for the Toffees, would mean the loss of a strong central figure in the Everton midfield. With all of the excitement surrounding Everton’s attacking options, it is key to have a balance. A ball-winner. One who can snuff out attacks defensively and hold up play to release our own attacking threats. That is not to say that Fellaini is not lacking in the attacking department himself, considering he has already managed to equal his goal scoring tally from the entirety of last season. Keeping Fellaini is a key part of Everton’s potential for this campaign, and the growing uncertainty about external interest could work to unsettle the team and in turn their results.

The emergence of Nikica Jelavic as Everton’s much needed clinical finisher as well as the quick-footed and promising new signing Kevin Miralles also adds to the optimism surrounding Goodison, with the squad showing enough genuine talent to provide a serious top-half push in this campaign, providing of course that their form stays consistent.

Injuries could also play a major role in Everton’s ongoing run of form. Darron Gibson, who managed eleven league games for the Blues last season without a single defeat, was ruled out for over a month with a thigh injury following the West Brom game. Striking threat Jelavic was also sidelined for two weeks following a nasty collision with a goalpost against Newcastle in September. If long term injuries were to hit a number of key Everton players, would the remaining squad still manage to perform at the level they have been doing so far this season?

Optimism aside however, if I take my fans cap off for a moment, there are definitely potential hurdles in Everton’s continuing campaign. The talk of Marouane Fellaini’s itchy feet, regardless of its level of exaggeration, has led to a number of top clubs keeping a close eye on the Belgian international. Sir Alex Ferguson attended Everton’s draw with Newcastle, sparking rumours of a January interest. Considering United’s need for a long-term central midfield option, and after Fellaini’s star performance against the Red Devils in August, it is a rumour I’d easily, and begrudgingly, believe. Losing a player like Fellaini, who at age twenty-

It seems a simple formula. Play well, avoid injuries and resist the interest in your key players. Even if all three of these occur, however, no-one can know for certain how the upcoming few games for Everton will finish. A contentious decision or a defensive mishap could decide a game, regardless of who has performed better on the day. Despite the uncertainty of the beautiful game, I believe that Everton fans can be optimistic about this year’s chances, and hope that they can finally defy the early season hoodoo which has damaged them in recent seasons.

Liverpool FC – The season so far… Early season optimism has eroded slightly after a run of two defeats, three draws and a loss leave the club in 18th place in the Premier League. The game against West Brom was the season opener, and a chance for Liverpool to start the season afresh and with Champions League qualification in mind. Unfortunately, the team carried on from where they left off last season with their profligacy in front of goal leading to a seismic collapse in the second half. The game ended with West Brom running out 3-0 winners and fans asking the same old questions about just who was going to give Liverpool the cutting edge they’ve so sorely lacked since the departure of Fernando Torres. Luis Suarez, who finished last season as Liverpool’s top scorer is a fantastic player and genuine “world class”, but for whatever reason struggles to replicate the composure in front of goal that he displays for Uruguay. History shows he scored 17 for the club last season, but the reality is – he could and should have scored at least double that amount. Fabio Borini shows promise, but with only 17 goals in 53 appearances at club level, statistics suggest that the goals will have to come from elsewhere. Samed Yesil, having scored 57 goals in 71 games

for Bayer Leverkusen youth, and 23 goals in 28 games at German youth level certainly ticks the boxes required to be labelled “one to watch”. To lay the blame for Liverpool’s early season woes at the door of misfiring strikers is both unfair and inaccurate. Liverpool’s failure to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham, and the difference of opinion between FSG, Ian Ayre (Liverpool’s Managing Director) and Brendan Rodgers on just what “type” of player the club should be signing highlights a lack of cohesion that short term, will cause episodes like the Dempsey (non) transfer, and is something that needs to be rectified for the long term benefit of the club. Negatives aside - I have genuine faith in Rodgers and his ability to turn around the decline that started during the Hicks and Gillett era and their “asset stripping” policy, forcing former boss Rafa Benitez to sell players to pay off the unsustainable debt they had leveraged on to the club. Rodgers has a clear idea of how he wants Liverpool to play football at all levels from youth team upwards, with the much talked “tika-taka” philosophy (popularised by Barcelona) being his favoured system.

There have already been some encouraging signs that the message is slowly getting across, with the display against Man City in particular giving cause for optimism, reducing the current Premier League Champions to chasing shadows for large parts of the game. City’s midfield colossus Yaya Toure said it was “the hardest game I’ve played since I’ve been in England”. Conversely, it was followed up by a completely dire performance against Arsenal followed by a much improved performance against Sunderland, though Liverpool’s lack of ruthlessness in front of goal on both occasions ended up costing the team dearly. The team travelled to Switzerland for the Europa League tie against BSC Young Boys. Rodgers fielded a very young side, having one eye clearly on the forthcoming game against Man United just three days later, handing debuts to no fewer than three players in Academy graduates Andre Wisdom, the highly rated Suso and £3 million pound summer signing Oussama Assaidi. Wisdom performed admirably and was a serious contender for “man of the match”, Assaidi

11 showed promise, but it was the much vaunted Suso who really caught the eye. He was calm in possession, displayed a good range of passing and showed excellent positioning -- looking very much like a young Xabi Alonso. Only time will tell if he can live up to that billing, but it was an assured performance hinting at a genuine future at the club. The team ran out 5-3 winners in the end, giving momentum into what is arguably the biggest game of the season – Manchester United. The build up to the game was (rightly) all about the findings of the Hillsborough panel, with both teams showing great subtlety in their handling of what was an emotional occasion -- Sir Bobby Charlton presenting Ian Rush with flowers pre match, and one of the most heartfelt renditions of You’ll Never Walk Alone by the fans you’re ever likely to hear.

Once the game was underway, Liverpool - most likely spurred on by the events of the week, and coupled with a growing understanding of Rodgers’ methods -- had United on the back foot for most of the first half, with a possession stat of 65% at one point until Jonjo Shelvey was dismissed by referee Mark Halsey for a tackle on Jonny Evans. Replay’s suggested that a yellow card for both players would’ve sufficed. Liverpool took the lead through Steven Gerrard after some great work by the emerging Suso, before United levelled through Rafael. Liverpool continued to play the better football for large parts despite being a man down, but United scored a winner after Glen Johnson was adjudged to have fouled Antonio Valencia in the area. Robin Van Persie converted the resulting penalty after being anonymous for large parts of the game.

The game ended 2-1 in United’s favour, though the performance left most fans seeing further signs of a team moving in the right direction, despite the result. To summarise, the majority of fans are still firmly behind Brendan Rodgers. He seems to have an idea, a vision and a presence and if he’s given the time and more importantly the support of those in the boardroom and those in the stands, then Liverpool will slowly but surely make the transition from a club looking back at past glories, to one looking forward to glory. It’s been a long dark decade in the doldrums for us Tranmere fans since we were relegated from what is now the Championship. A succession of different managers, an array of average players and a feeling of gloom whenever I went the game. Well not this season, this season we are rockin’ big time! I write this the morning after we’ve gone down to fourth placed Crawley Town and beaten them 5-2, we are firmly and rightfully top of the league. There is genuine optimism surrounding the club, Ronnie Moore has worked miracles since coming back last season. With this team goals and creativity seems to come from everywhere, Jake Cassidy at centre forward has banged 7 in already and there’s a never ending stream of ideas from Andy Robbo, Akpa Akpro and the lads. The back four looks incredibly solid and for me shouldn’t be interfered, even when Ian Goodison is finally fit. The Crawley game also saw the chant of the season so far from the Super White Army, ‘They’re gonna turn your ground into a runway’, genius that is. Speaking of chants, for any Rovers fans reading this, does anybody know the end bit to the famous Tranmere song ‘One night in gay Paree’? For 28 years I’ve been listening to it and nobody seems to know the end bit, it always peters out! The good times are back at Fortress Prenton. IAN PROWSE ||

Lol Crème was a founder member of one of the most creative and unique bands that the UK has ever produced. 10cc were light years ahead of their contemporaries and in the four years that the original line up was recording together, they produced 4 albums and enough hit records to secure their place as one of the most successful bands of the 1970’s. After 10cc, Crème went on to record under the name Godley and Crème with his writing partner of many years, Kevin Godley. They also had a very successful career making music videos for the pop elite. Lol has now teamed up with Trevor Horn, Stephen Lipson and Ash Soan to form The Producers. Adam Coxon went to meet Lol Crème to hear all about his latest musical venture. SO, LOL, HOW DID THE IDEA FOR ‘THE PRODUCERS’ COME ABOUT? I can answer that one! The idea of The Producers came about from all of us wanting to play live again. We just wanted to get a band together that could play a pub gig. That was the aspiration. We wanted to have a bit of fun and we ended up by doing a world tour of Camden! All of the good venues that there is to play in Camden, we played them. The Barfly, Dingwalls and The Jazz Café. We’d have a different special guest sing with us each time. Will Young was one of them.

live. We just played at “The Big Feastival” last week, which was a food and music festival hosted by Jamie Oliver and Alex James. It was really fun to do as they both got up on stage and played “Relax” (Frankie Goes To Hollywood) with us. The great thing about working on any project that Trevor is involved with is the fact that he is so meticulous when it comes to rehearsal. Everything is done properly when Trevor is involved. The gig I mentioned that I did with Trevor in 2004 at Wembley Arena was a real thrill to be a part of it. We had the privilege of playing with an orchestra on that gig. Rather than having one group rehearsal, Trevor would rehearse each section of the band individually. When playing live with The Producers it felt so good and we all had such a great time that the natural thing to do was to go into the studio and record some tracks together.

I GUESS THAT THESE SHOWS WERE THE FIRST TIME THAT YOU’D PERFORMED IN PUBLIC FOR QUITE SOMETIME THEN? Oh yes! I hadn’t played live for years, except for the odd thing including a Prince’s Trust charity gig which I performed at celebrating Trevor Horn’s 25 years in the industry in 2004.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE CREATIVE PROCESS WITHIN THE BAND? As soon as we went into the studio to record, we made the decision to split the writing credit on every song equally, four ways. By doing things that way, it made sure that there was no pressure on any member to come up with ideas. It really made everyone free to be creative. My advice to any young bands out there is that this is the only way to do it. Ash, (Soan) our drummer came up with some wonderful ideas.

AND HOW DID IT FEEL TO PERFORM LIVE AGAIN? Oh it was great! I’ve always loved performing

How often do you walk into a studio and see your drummer sitting there strumming an acoustic guitar? It was great! The album took

a lot longer to finish than we anticipated. We had our fair share of setbacks. We were working with a wonderful guy called Chris Braide. Chris then had the opportunity to go out to L.A. to join the Simon Cowell machine and work as a professional songwriter for him. It was an opportunity that he couldn’t turn down really. So he moved his family out there and obviously it would have been difficult for him to be a part of the band from then on. It was a real drag when Chris left but the rest of us carried on. From the beginning it was always going to be difficult to get all of us in the studio at the same time. You are talking about four different people with very busy schedules. That’s another reason it took so long to finish the album. Oh, have you heard the album yet? YES, I HAVE AND I REALLY ENJOYED IT. JUST OUT OF CURIOSITY, DID YOU WRITE THE RIFF IN THE SONG, ‘FREEWAY’? Yes, I did! Caught red handed eh? THE RIFF SOUNDED LIKE IT COULD HAVE BEEN FROM A SONG ON ANY OF THE FOUR 10CC ALBUMS THAT YOU WERE PART OF. IT WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN OUT OF PLACE ON ONE OF THOSE AT ALL. Thanks for that. The riff was actually taken from a Hotlegs song which I wrote in the late 60’s and it ended up on the Hotlegs album. Hotlegs was the band that I had with Eric (Stewart) and Kev (Godley) from the beginning of 1970, before we added Graham (Gouldman) and merged into 10cc. That riff had been going around in my head for years and I thought that it was too good

LOWDOWN ON MUSIC not to use it again! Trevor and I had the idea for that song. It’s about driving on the Freeway in L.A. at night. IN YOUR INTERVIEWS, YOU SPEAK ABOUT KEVIN GODLEY WITH GREAT FONDNESS. ARE YOU STILL IN TOUCH WITH KEVIN OR ANY OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF 10CC? I have nothing but the fondest thoughts about Kevin. I think he’s such a wonderful person. I grew up with Kev and in my eyes, he’s just the greatest songwriter. He’s the best songwriting partner I could have ever hoped for. I haven’t seen Kev for a few years now as he’s living in Dublin and I’m still in the UK. Also, we haven’t really got that much in common these days. I see Eric (Stewart) the most out of the guys from 10cc. In fact, I saw him this past weekend. My wife and his wife are sisters so I get to see him quite often when he’s in the country. I get on better with him now than I have ever done I think. We’re quite close. Did you know that there’s a new 10cc box set coming out? After the endless, awful ‘Best of’ compilation CD’s that have been released, this box set is the only 10cc related product that I’ve ever been consulted on. I was really thrilled about that too. WHAT KIND OF THINGS CAN THE FANS LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING IN THIS COLLECTION? Lots of things! It will have live tracks and some studio rarities. There is also going to be a full DVD of clips and also the film of a BBC concert that we recorded in 1974. I ACTUALLY SAW KEVIN PERFORM AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL WITH THE CURRENT INCARNATION OF 10CC IN MAY THIS YEAR. A VERY RARE APPEARANCE FROM KEVIN BY ALL ACCOUNTS AS IT WOULD SEEM THAT HE DOESN’T PERFORM LIVE MUCH AT ALL THESE DAYS. Great! Did kev perform on the whole show? Was he singing or drumming? KEV SANG ‘OLD WILD MEN’ WITH GRAHAM GOULDMAN AND THEN HE PLAYED DRUMS ON RUBBER BULLETS AT THE END ALONG

WITH PAUL BURGESS PLAYING DRUMS ON ANOTHER KIT. Wow, Paul Burgess still plays with them? He played with 10cc in the early days you know. YEAH, HE’S STILL WITH THEM! I WAS WONDERING HOW YOU FELT ABOUT GRAHAM GOULDMAN GOING OUT AND PERFORMING UNDER THE NAME 10CC? That’s a bit of a double edged sword really. I mean, it’s great that the name of the band is being kept alive and that the music is still being played live. I understand Graham’s need and want to go on the road and tour but maybe he could call the show, ‘Graham Gouldman of 10cc’ instead of just 10cc. I feel that as things are, the name is quite misleading to the fans. I know that Eric still gets emails from fans who were disappointed that he wasn’t at these ‘10cc’ shows. It really gets under his skin. I’ve still got a lot of respect for Graham and he was certainly an integral part of 10cc. I used to use different tunings on my guitar in the studio. It made things much more interesting. When you’re in standard tuning your fingers naturally gravitate to the next chord in that particular progression. When you’re in a different tuning that you’re not familiar with at all, you can’t do that and the outcome can be really exciting. The problem came when we started rehearsing songs in order to play them live. After recording the songs, I could never remember which tunings I had recorded them in in the studio. My memory was awful. That’s where Graham came in. He would hear the part and transpose it instantly and fairly effortlessly. He had a great ear for things like that. IT STRIKES ME THAT 10CC WAS CERTAINLY A BAND THAT ENJOYED THEMSELVES AND HAD SOME FUN. YOU CAN HEAR IT IN ALL OF YOUR RECORDS. THERE ARE PARTS OF SONGS THAT ACTUALLY MAKE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD WHEN YOU HEAR THEM. SOME fun?! A LOT of fun! We certainly didn’t take ourselves seriously in 10cc at all and I think that it does show in all of our records.

I REMEMBER HEARING, “DON’T HANG UP” FOR THE FIRST TIME AND THAT’S ESSENTIALLY A MINI OPERETTA. THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT CHANGES IN THAT SONG AND IN MANY 10CC SONGS. EACH SECTION COULD BE A SONG IN IT’S OWN RIGHT. When it comes to songwriting, I like to see myself as a scientist and each song is a lab experiment. I really like to explore the potential of where a song could go. We were lucky in 10cc that we had two pairs of really strong songwriters. Kev and myself and then Graham and Eric. Graham’s dad used to come out with phrases like, “Art for Art’s sake, Money for God’s sake”. Phrases like that became so firmly rooted in Graham’s mind that he would take them and turn them into songs. We used to call Graham’s dad, “Hyme the Rhyme”. THERE IS ALSO A LOT OF CINEMATIC IMAGERY IN 10CC SONGS. WHO WERE YOUR MUSICAL AND CINEMATIC HEROES AS YOU WERE GROWING UP? I think in a way, I was always more influenced by film than I was by music. Gene Kelly has always been a favourite actor of mine. SO, IN 1976 AFTER EXTRAORDINARY SUCCESS WITH 10CC, YOU AND KEVIN GODLEY DECIDED TO LEAVE THE BAND. WAS IT A TOUGH DECISION TO MAKE? I GUESS PEOPLE MUST HAVE THOUGHT THAT YOU WERE MAD TO WALK AWAY FROM SUCH SUCCESS? Maybe we were mad! I certainly don’t regret it though, it definitely felt like the right time to go. I don’t regret anything in my life. I’ve had several different careers and I’ve been very lucky. I wouldn’t change a thing. The Producers album, ‘Made in Basing Street’ is out now. ||

Glenn Gregory was a founder member of Human League and shot to fame with Heaven 17 in the 80’s. A time of high unemployment, austerity measures, riots, strikes and of course Margaret Thatcher. Several decades later and it’s a case of deja vous. YOU ARE BACK ON TOUR ACROSS THE UK AND EUROPE. HOW IS THAT GOING? It’s been brilliant. We did some shows on the anniversary of the first album and now it’s the 30th anniversary of Luxury Gap which was our more commercially successful album we decided to do it again. We’ve got a bigger band for this because it’s a bit more complicated to perform on stage, so we brought in another keyboard player, Bernie Scott. It’s just really, really good fun and we are having a ball. We didn’t do it first time round, Luxury Gap has never been toured, no one has ever seen it apart from one gig at the Roundhouse in London so we are really looking forward to it and hopefully the fans are too. YOUR FIRST SINGLE WAS BANNED BY RADIO 1/MIKE READE FOR ‘POLITICAL REASONS’. DO YOU REMEMBER HOW IT MADE YOU FEEL AND IN HINDSIGHT DOES IT SEEM RIDICULOUS? It seemed absolutely ridiculous at the time to be honest, never mind hindsight. It was really deflating and made us really angry. The Human League had split up and i joined Matyn and Ian to form Heaven 17 and we were working in the same studio as the Humen League. They did days and we did nights. ‘Fascist Groovesound’ was the first thing we recorded and finished it in about 6/7 days and we thought this is great, this is our direction, lyrically and musically. When we released it we were nervous that people wouldn’t get it because it wasn’t like

the old Human League but when it came out it was record of the week in NME, Sound, Melody Maker and others which was amazing. The people were with us. Not only was it a good dance tune but there was a message in there, f****** great! Then what happens? Some arsehole at Radio 1 decides he doesn’t like the content. Some massive Tory wanker. Sorry it still makes me angry today...we were like Oh come on have an ounce of sense mate, read the lyrics and see what it’s about. They didn’t officially ban it but they refused to play it so we couldn’t really go to the press or do anything about it. HAVE YOU MET HIM SINCE? Yes we’ve met him but he denied he had anything to do with it but i think he probably did because everybody heard him... OH WELL THE LIST OF CENSORED ARTISTS ISN’T A BAD CLUB TO BE IN... Absolutely! THERE ARE A FEW CITIES AROUND THE WORLD THAT PUNCH ABOVE THEIR WEIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO PRODUCING MUSIC AND SHEFFIELD IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THEM. WHY IS THAT? I think it’s to do with the fact that it was very downtrodden. It was a very industrial city with steel in the centre and mines on the outskirts. So when you left school it was either mining or steelworks. For a very long time and it didn’t even have any good places to go. We used to

travel to Liverpool and Manchester for nights out and Sheffield didn’t really have that so you had to make your own entertainment. I think that’s where it comes from, the fact that you just have to do it yourself. Sheffield is a very ‘doing’ city. It’s full of people who want to do stuff and they don’t want to just jump on the back of another scene, they don’t want to just move to London. They want to do it themselves. That can do, will do mentality is where it comes from along with a bolshy belief in your own ability, nothing has been handed on a plate. Music has benefitted from that attitude. LUXURY GAP WAS WRITTEN AT THE HEIGHT OF THATCHER’S BRITAIN. DO YOU FEEL LIKE WE’VE COME FULL CIRCLE AND WE ARE BACK TO THE SAME PLACE? I do unfortunately believe exactly that. I think we could have written it yesterday. Even the title ‘The Luxury Gap’ and songs like ‘Key To The World’ about credit and people living beyond their means and it’s just absolutely happening now, it’s the same. When we program the songs what we do is Martyn does half and i do half so i spent a few months getting everything ready and working on parts and keyboard sounds and while I was listening to it totally forgot that it was a 30 year old album. It really felt musically and lyrically current because that’s what’s happening again in the world.

LOWDOWN ON MUSIC ARE WE DOOMED TO GO ROUND IN CIRCLES OR DO THINGS LIKE THE INTERNET HELP? “History will repeat itself, crisis point within the hour” is a line from ‘Fascist Groove Thang’ and unfortunately i do think it’s true. The internet does help and it makes people aware and they can see very quickly now when something is happening but still the power to change is not really in our hands. Ultimately it is, the people CAN change things but i don’t think the internet has made it easier to break through. We are going round in circles. It’s like a boat with one f****** oar. we need some new leadership. That’s what i think.

NEW ARTISTS LIKE LA ROUX CITE HEAVEN 17 AS A MAJOR INFLUENCE AND YOU HAVE SUBSEQUENTLY PERFORMED WITH HER. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE AND HOW DOES IT FEEL MEETING THE NEW GENERATION OF ARTISTS WHO HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED? It was really exciting actually. It was BBC Radio 6 who had the ideas of putting new acts together with bands who had influenced them and La Roux asked us to do it. I was aware of La Roux and really liked it so i was really excited.

YOU HAVE WORKED WITH LOT’S OF BIG ARTISTS INCLUDING TINA TURNER’S COMEBACK. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? We always loved Tina Turner and River Deep... was a big favourite of all of ours and when we were doing the BEF (British Electric Foundation) album somebody mentioned that they had a contact for Tina Turner and if we were interested and we were like ‘definitely!’

she really enjoyed it and a couple of days later she asked if we would write some songs for her but we said we couldn’t because we were in the middle of writing Luxury Gap so we offered to do another cover with her to put on the album. That’s when we did ‘Let’s Stay Together’ we recorded that, she came in and sang it and the rest is is literally history. It was a massive hit all over the world and when the album followed she was right back up there where she belonged. ELECTRONIC ARTISTS ARE WELL KNOWN FOR SPLASHING OUT ON EQUIPMENT. DO YOU STILL HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY BUG? I’m still there but more in the computer now and more soft synths. I’ve just had to upgrade my system so the new stuff will work. Yes, i’ve still got this technology bug and i’m still buying it but don’t tell the missus... GOWEST YOUNGMAN The Hummingbirds are the latest band from Liverpool making waves. With a growing legion of fans, celebrity endorsements and interest from USA and Japan the future is looking very bright for the 5 piece beat combo. We spoke to Jamie Davies (Vocals/Guitar), Matthew Brougham (Guitar), Michael Kountis (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Richard Smith (Cajon/Vocals) and Ryan Lewis (Bass/Vocals) at Studio 2.

21 HOW DID IT ALL START? J: Me and Matty were friends from the same road. We started the band about a year and a half back on our own literally wanting to be in a group. We were watching live bands all the time and one in particular was a band called Young Rebel Set from Stockton who are now good friends with us. We caught them by chance at the Academy and we wanted to be like them but different and better so we went home and we worked on it. I got in touch with Mick because he’s one of the best guitarists i know and asked him to come and do a gig for us. When we looked at his Facebook we saw Richard and his box (Cahon). We had tried a drumkit when it was just me and Matt and it was killing the acoustic sound we wanted so we asked Mick to bring Rich along and it just happened and they brought harmonies with them and we were like ‘that’s it, that’s what we want’. Rich: I was playing bass in a pub in Rainhill and Ryan was there and he said ‘i really like your bass playing’ so i told him about the Hummingbirds and he came and watched us and we were after a bass player so i told Jay he plays and he said ‘get him in he’s good looking’. WHEN DID YOU START WRITING ORIGINAL MATERIAL? J: We had an 8 track and we were taking everything down so we could hear what we sounded like. we recorded some covers and then we were writing our own stuff, I don’t even know where it came from. One we day we got a riff and wrote a few words. So when we met Mick and Rick we already had a few tracks of our own. Bankrupt Loser was one of those first tracks. THERE’S A 60’S INFLUENCE IN YOUR SOUND. IS THAT DELIBERATE OR DID THE SOUND JUST EVOLVE? I think when me and Rich joined the songs didn’t sound 60’s at all and it could of been like Oasis or indie and the whole sound came with the cahon, the tambourine and the electric guitar. As the band’s developed it’s grown it’s own sound. The harmonies were a big factor. On the first EP we’d written Talking Tomorrow and Back in Liverpool and we had a happy acoustic driven thing which is on the 2nd and 3rd EP’s but it’s much more mature and serious now. Now we really purposely write like this, we naturally do we produce it more because there’s more people paying attention now than when we were just sitting in a bedroom. We like to be fussy and refine the sound. We don’t want it to sound like a mish mash of stuff, we want it to sound like us but we’ve definitely got our sound now.

Mi: When we were sitting in the bedroom and we were first playing and me and Rich started throwing some harmonies in Jay and Matty were like ‘this is great’ You do everything yourselves and have built up a great following online. Did it just happen or did you have to work at it? J: We worked very hard for it as far as i’m concerned. We worked our socks off for it, we sat at home and checked out everyone in the industry who we needed to follow and we messaged them and there was a pyramid effect. Now it’s hard to go anywhere in Liverpool where people don’t know about us. YOU’VE JUST DONE ANOTHER SOLD OUT SHOW IN LIVERPOOL AT THE ZANZIBAR. DO YOU HAVE A FOLLOWING IN ANY OTHER AREAS? Stockton and Middlesborough and London. Because of the Rooney tweets people know about us. We stalk these places as well. If we have a gig in Leeds we’ll follow thousands of people and let them know about it. Those people might tell their mates and next time we come to Leeds it grows and we have more people. Twitter has been unbelievable, i can’t believe how much it’s helped us. Facebook has done nothing for us but we can just get in touch with people in New York or wherever on Twitter. It’s great that’s it’s so accessible but it’s a lot of hard work to find your target market. You look at the Arctic Monkeys and The View and their fanbase. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR MUSIC BEING RELEASED, DIGITAL, CD, VINYL? We want to do everything. We went back to The Old Vinyl Factory in Hayes and did a few acoustic tracks and the guy was saying people like Guy Garvey and others are starting vinyl only labels. Vinyl is like a commodity now. HOW DO YOU APPROACH RECORDING THE SONGS? Because we’ve played the songs so many times over we record as live as possible. Our producer Danny want to record the album in a cottage and do it as live as possible and capture the sound as much as possible. Keep it live and simple. AS YOU’VE SAID YOU USE A CAHON INSTEAD OF A DRUMKIT Ri. If it’s set up properly at a gig it sounds just like a drum kit. I don’t play like i’ve seen other people they play really light. JAY YOU HAVE ‘REVOLVER’ AND ‘DEFINITELY MAYBE’ TATTOOED ON YOUR ARM AND MATTY YOU’VE GOT ‘I WANT TO BE ADORED’ AND ‘LIVE FOREVER’. IS THAT A BAND THING? It’s just them two being...

IF YOU HAD A SONG TATTOO WHAT WOULD IT BE? Mi: I’ve got John Mayer’s signature on me arm. I met him and got his autograph and got it tattooed on. Ry: I’d probably get ‘Bicycle Race’ tattooed on my arse. Ri: I don’t know what i’d get done but i’d probably get it somewhere you never see. YOU SEEM LIKE A GREAT BUNCH OF MATES, DO YOU HANG OUT A LOT? We’ve got no other mates any more. All the people we were mates with we are still friends with but we just focus on this. I don’t know how you could do it if you were’nt mates. I don’t know how you could be in a boy band where you’ve never met each other before. Elvis said once he was jealous of the Beatles because they had each other but he went through alone. DO YOU SEE YOU MUSIC AS A RETALIATION AGAINST MANUFACTURED POP? J: Definitely, we are not manufactured at all, everything is done ourselves. We already have our core ideas and if we get to the point were we need people to come and write songs for us we may as well give up and buy some hairwax. J: And start a boyband... We can probably do the harmonies better. But we can’t dance.. Music goes through trends and that’s one that’s popular at the moment. You just have to combat it and provide something else. HOW DO APPROACH WRITING SONGS? One of us will come with some chords, we all play guitar. One week we’ll show up with ideas and sit down and pick the best ones. Emma off the new EP was around for ages and Rich wanted to work on it. It was the last one we worked and it turned out to be the best one. Jay: We hit a stumbling block with it at first. We had this melody and couldn’t get past it and it’s not happening so we had to leave it for about a month and come back. We always wanted a song with a whistle in it before that. YOU’VE GOT A STRONG AFFINITY WITH THE CITY. DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD SOUND DIFFERENT IF YOU WERE NOT FROM LIVERPOOL. The accent is clearly there in the songs. You can tell a band’s from Manchester like The Stone Roses or Oasis but Liverpool’s always had an acoustic twang like the La’s and everyone listened to The Beatles but in Liverpool you just heard it more. TIKITAILORDRINKHAWAII Aloha is Liverpool’s first established and most popular Tiki Bar. It’s home to the most exotic cocktails in the city and hosts some of the liveliest and most entertaining nights Liverpool has to offer. LowDown sat down with owner and proprietor Danny Murphy and asked him what his ethos was when it came to running a bar, how he managed to make Aloha one of the most frequented locations on any night of the week, what’s in the future and most importantly what exactly is Tiki. What is Tiki? According to Danny, Tiki is not a style as most would believe, but a ‘substance’, It’s a way of life, It’s about walking into a bar and feeling the love in the room and is synonymous with ‘Scouse’ Culture, where it symbolizes escapism, individuality and non-conformism. His description of the word ‘Tiki’ and the passion behind his words were all apparent from the moment you set foot in Aloha, before you look at the amazing art work on the walls, or the exotic and varied decorations and before you even smell any of the flaming cocktails, you feel it and that’s exactly when

you truly understand what Tiki exactly is, a feeling. Now, how did Aloha become such a prominent force in any night out’s arsenal? The answer is quite easy once you visit the bar. “It’s pride in one’s work, the personal effort each and everyone one of the staff puts in, from making of the drinks to the smiles the give when handing them to you, they give it their all”. One would think that after making the same flaming cocktail countless times, your enthusiasm would dwindle little by little. Not in Aloha, it seems like the bartenders there where born to Tiki, like they were destined to be there and never seem to ever want to be anywhere else, a trait that makes a simple thing like buying a drink, a joyous occasion. Halloween Family Evening Knowsley Safari Park Knowsley Safari Park will be hosting an evening of fun for all the family with a fancy dress event starting at 7pm. Expect creepie crawlies of all forms in the “Wild at Art” section, scares from the “Bat Forest” and “Birds of Prey” for the spooky outdoor display, before heading inside for food and drinks. The evening then culminates with an indoor “Birds of Prey” display. Pumpkin lantern or torch optional!

Thursday 18th October at Pan Am Beyonce’s fashion label is the latest big fashion name to join a new event celebrating fashion in Liverpool.

House of Dereon will hit the catwalk alongside popular brands including Brat & Suzie, Love Umbrellas, Scouse Boutique and many more as organisers promise to show that fashion really can be inclusive. Liverpool Fashion LIVE is the brainchild of two local business women who are set on challenging the stereotypes of the fashion industry by promoting ‘fashion for everyone’ at the event at Pan Am on The Albert Dock next month. Ruth Thomas and Caz Murray both own fashion businesses in the North West and are conscious that a lot of people feel excluded by the traditional fashion shows and events.

As well as a jam-packed catwalk show, Liverpool Fashion LIVE will also feature music from some of Liverpool’s top music acts including all girl tribute band The Beatelles and up and coming RnB star Thomas Teago. The event will raise funds for local children’s hospice Claire’s House Hospice with a charity raﬄe and auction taking place on the night plus 25% of the money raised by ticket sales also being donated to the hospice’s Pay for a Day campaign. BEN FOLDS FIVE THE SOUND OF THE LIFE OF THE MIND

Muse have never been afraid to deal with big concepts and their sixth studio album uses the 2nd law of thermodynamics (geeks rejoice everywhere) as a metaphor to describe the unsustainable man made systems currently in place and the need for balance and redress.

Ben Folds Five return with their latest offering – “The Sound of the Life of the Mind” after a 13 year hiatus, during which time the respective band members all embarked on solo careers with varying levels of success.

I like the Killers and was looking forward to hearing this but on first listen it left me a little uninspired. On second listen it didn’t get much better. As you would expect it’s well recorded and the performances are perfect but it just seems a little lacking in something, possibly grit.

‘Supremacy’ opens with heavy guitar bass and drums and then turns into a driving Kashmir like riff complete with strings. It drops down into soft vocals and strings that build up into Bellamy’s soaring vocals. We even get a dose of mariachi brass. The first single off the album Madness is a bit more of a pop affair. Queen meets George Michael which will probably appeal to a new audience. There’s another taste of Zep in ‘Panic Station’ mixed with INXS. ‘Save Me’ is a pleasant affair but really sounds too much like The Beach Boys to avoid the comparison. ‘Animals’ stands out as more of a classic Muse track syncopation and timing changes. ‘The 2nd Law Isolated System’ is an interesting piece with a repeating piano sequences and voice-overs that slowly build and build. You can hear Morricone, John Williams – Bond, Led Zeppelin, INXS, Beach Boys, some dub step and even a few show tunes at some point during this album. If you are a fan of Muse you will be used to all the pomp and pretentiousness and you’ll probably enjoy this. Despite the varied assortment of ideas which are often so familiar they distract, Muse deliver their message with absolute conviction which really helps once you are a few listens in and as with any Muse album it needs a few listens to decide if you love or hate it. 7/10 PT ||

Right from the opening track “Erase Me”, to the closer – “Thank You for Breaking My Heart” the band play with all the verve and conviction that long-time fans of the band have come to expect, with the rhythm section of Robert Sledge (Bass) and Darren Jessee (Drums) providing the perfect platform for Mr Folds to paint his musical and lyrical imagery that only he can do in his own inimitable way. Nick Hornby (writer of High Fidelity and About a Boy) co-writes the title track – which is a fierce, driving number musically, and lyrically displays all the hallmarks of a Hornby piece - using overtly descriptive prose that encourages the listener to almost “see” the Middle America being sung about. The Sound of the Life of the Mind is everything you’d expect from a Ben Folds Five album showcasing all the disarming humour and quirky melancholy that is their trademark, and yet at the same time – it’s more. They sound like a band re-energised and re-focused after over a decade away exploring other musical ideas, and in this era of X Factor winners and rejects, it’s nice to hear a band producing an album of finely crafted songs performed by real musicians at the top of their game. 8/10 KD ||

Maybe the band are just aiming at adverts and movie soundtracks. If that’s the case they’ve probably hit gold but to me it sounds like they plundered a large range of influences but forgot to take any of the decent hooks. Most of the tracks are painfully heartfelt ballads spattered with keyboard lines that are worthy of a teen movie soundtracks from the 80’s. Even heavyweight producers Brendan O’Brien, Daniel Lanois and Steve Lillywhite fail to lift proceedings and considering their cv’s that speaks volumes. Call me cynical but it seems like the sole aim of this album to to lift the bands profile further at any cost. From the choice of producers to the influences, a combination of classic soft rock mixed with some of the most successful recent acts makes for a well planned checklist for success. The new Killers album is a mixed bag. It’s easy to listen to and has many of the hallmarks of the classic American AOR bands but it is just so safe and unchallenging it’s hard to get excited. If you could convert the ‘oh so’ sincere speeches of politicians into pop songs you could well end up with this album, apparently Mitt Romney loves it. It will no doubt be lapped up by millions of adoring fans but personally i think you would get a lot more out of listening to Battle Born by Scurvy Bastards instead. 5/10 PT ||

Lawless

In an adaptation of the 2008 novel ‘The Wettest County In The World’, three brothers/ bootleggers attempt to prosper and survive a wave of police corruption in the American prohibition era.

Despite a fairly confused first act the film quickly becomes a highly enjoyable, albeit poorly structured, ride of alcohol, gunfire with plenty of brutal violence. The cast of the film is probably its strongest point, making the best of a fairly average script and providing a strangely adolescent sense of humour for such an adult film. Shia LaBeouf turns in a surprisingly decent lead performance, however the most enjoyable roles are undoubtedly his delightfully violent, alcoholic brothers, who add a majority of both the laughs and the gasps. As previously mentioned the film is extremely unapologetic in its violence, and although this may be unappealing for some, if you think you

would enjoy the shock value of watching a man getting his back scalded with boiling tar then this would probably be your most cathartic film experience of the year. Admittedly this film is quite low-brow and not very memorable in terms of substance but as a typical male-oriented popcorn flick it most definitely succeeds, appealing to every man’s inner barbarian in a way that almost leaves you wanting more, just don’t take your girlfriend if she thinks you’re the sensitive type. Berberian Sound Studio The second feature from indie director Peter Strickland, ‘Berberian Sound Studio’ tells the story of a British sound designer working on an exploitation film in the golden age of Italian horror. Although not all is as it seems in the studio and as our supposed protagonist grows increasingly unstable we begin to question the lines between fantasy and reality in this strange world. Even though the film is about the production of a brutally violent horror flick, the actual ‘horror’ element is handled very subtly. As we never see the horrible acts the hero is witnessing, we are forced to rely mostly on character reactions and our own disgusting imaginations to fill in the blanks. Strickland also helps this process with a truly mesmerising sound design, using the gory squelches of effects being recorded and the horrified screams of voice actors to create an eerie atmosphere so thick it could only be compared to whale blubber. Of course the film is not for everyone and if you only go to horror movies these days to see teenagers getting appendages torn off you might want to give this one a miss, but if you’re after something captivating and thought-provoking that makes you feel genuinely uncomfortable at times then you should definitely find a way to see ‘Berberian Sound Studio’.
