WELCOME TO THE 2016

Summer Guide

With its brilliant blue skies on a sunny summer day and the lush green of its forests and meadows, the part of Michigan we call home can be considered a respite from the frenzied activities of the vibrant cities that surround us. Whether canoeing the Thornapple River or biking the trails that run through the area’s many villages and townships, even those lucky enough to call this area home will find new things to see and do. The natural beauty of this part of the state is complemented by the arts and culture, dining and

shopping along with plenty of small town charm. In this edition of Out and About - 101 ThingsTo-Do Summer Guide, we again feature longtime favorites for visitors and residents as well as new venues to enjoy. Use the guide as a calendar for summer fun and a map to local shopping and activities. Don’t be surprised to find a smile, an old-fashioned handshake and a word of thanks for spending time with us in one of the most beautiful settings in lower Michigan.

Lowell Farmers’ Market “The farmers' market definitely is changing and growing,” said Liz Baker, executive director of the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. “There will be a nice ambiance to it this year.” The Lowell Area Farmers' Market will be open from noon until 5:30 pm every

Thursday through September in the parking lot behind city hall at the corner of Monroe and Avery. At the Lowell Area Farmers' Market you'll find fresh fruit, fresh flowers, organic honey, baked goods, homemade salsa and sauces, interesting garden decorations and other

handcrafted items. Last year they added milk, ice cream and meat direct from a local farm, expanded the hours and changed the location. “We are excited this year because we already have interest from vendors that we couldn't attract before,” Baker said.

For more information, visit the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce website, www.lowellchamber. org, or call them at 616-897-9161. If you are a vendor who would like to participate, contact Cinnamin Piggott at 616-916-9193.

Several summer events at historical museum Lowell Area Historical Museum is located at the busiest intersection in downtown Lowell. Their mission is to document the history of the Lowell area and share the most interesting bits with the general public. The biggest event at the museum this summer is their Summer Fest Garden Party, which will take place on Friday, August 26 from 6 to 9 pm. All the food and drink served will be from local businesses. Last year's event even included a beer brewed especially for it by Ada's Gravel Bottom Brewery. “We have a

museum fundraiser in August featuring local food, beer and wine and history all at the museum,” said Lisa Plank, the museum's executive director. “We wanted to do a fundraiser that would showcase the museum and bring people in to see our local history." From 9 am until 2 pm on Tuesday, August 16 the museum will have a Pioneer Life summer camp. Kids ages 7 through 14 who have access to $10 will be able to choose from activities such as making a toy, pioneer cooking, making a covered wagon or something called a history hike.

Participants are encouraged to dress like pioneers. Contact the museum for more information or to register. This summer will be your last chance to check out their exhibit documenting what went down in Lowell during the turbulent 1960s. The exhibit contains dozens of artifacts, including wild 7

clothes, oddly-shaped furniture, a record player, a black and white TV and some nifty psychedelic posters. Their next exhibit will focus on early fur trading in the area. For more information about what's going on at the museum visit their website, www. lowellmuseum.org, or call 616-897-7688.

Lowell’s Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts are well known locally for bringing top-notch bands of all genres to

town for free concerts on the historic Showboat. “There‘s a cash bar on the Showboat,”

said Liz Baker, executive director, Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. “The concerts showcase and support a diverse selection of musicians and musical styles from throughout Michigan. Styles include blues, world music, country, rock, big band, and jazz.” Organizers were especially pleased to announce one of the shows in particular. “Have you heard of Joshua Davis,” Baker asked rhetorically. “We‘re pretty excited. He was on‚ 'The Voice.‘ It is a very popular show. He is going to be playing at the summer concerts this year with the band Steppin‘ In It. He‘s part of the band.” Davis was a thirdplace finalist on the eighth season of “The Voice” in 2015. He performed at the Lowell Showboat on June 23 with his band Steppin’ In It, a rarity for Davis who has been playing solo concerts all over the United States since his stint on TV.

The concerts take place from 7 to 9 pm each Thursday June 16 through August 20 12

Big Band Nouveau will play jazz music on June 30. On July 8 the Kari Lynch Band will play loud country rock. July 14 will bring Soul Syndicate, who cover classic soul and R&B from the 1960s and 70s. July 21 will be another round of soul music, this time by Rachel B. On July 28 the Accidentals will play indie folk rock “on a plethora of instruments.” Hannah Rose and the Gravestones is another band that mixes genres, mostly soul, blues and funk; they’ll play the Showboat on August 4. On August 18 Roosevelt Diggs will play “Americana,” which is described as a mix of folk, country, bluegrass, blues and rockabilly. The final Sizzlin’ Summer Concert of 2016 will be on August 25 when the Adams Family will play classic folk, doo wop and rock tunes from the 1950s and 60s.

Riverwalk Festival - a summer party The Riverwalk Festival is Lowell’s annual three-day summer party.

This year the Riverwalk Festival will take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 8, 9 and 10. The Riverwalk Festival will start with live music on Thursday, July 8 by Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers, then on Friday, July 9 from local favorites the Kari Lynch Band. There is a long list of favorite activities that are returning for the entire three-day event. “We‘re going to bring the free pontoon rides back this year, Liz Baker, Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce director said, “along with street entertainers, the cash bar on the Showboat, arts and crafts booths, the commercial venders and the nonprofits, the classic cars will be back, and the canoe and kayak race on the river will be back. Englehardt Library‘s used book sale is always swamped with

people looking for rare and out-of-print books. “The Englehardt Library used book sale, that‘s a biggie. That‘s always a huge hit at the Riverwalk Festival, Baker said. Flat River Outreach Ministries is doing their Food Fight again this year, and the winner will be revealed at the Riverwalk Festival on Saturday. Saturday is also the day of the big parade that starts at noon and the talent show on the Showboat. If you want to participate in the open mic night on the Showboat, you can register on the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce website. The Duck Raffle is your chance to win a pile of money. Many stores and galleries on Main St. will have sidewalk sales and other special events. The pig roast was such a huge success the first year that they ran out of pork. Last year they expanded the pig roast, and there is no shortage of food choices at the Riverwalk Festival. Your choices will include barbecue, wood-fired pizzas and about eight other food booths and trucks.

On Saturday Lowell will close out the Riverwalk Festival with a bang. “We are still going to do the fireworks on Saturday night, that‘s our grand finale, Baker said. Everybody has their favorite spot where they go for the fireworks. You can expect to find lots of familyfriendly events and activities around Lowell‘s Riverwalk and historic downtown

for the duration of the festival. “There‘s a little bit for everybody to do, from classic cars to shopping, Baker said. “It really, truly is a family event. More information can be found on the official Riverwalk Festival website, riverwalkfestival.org or by calling the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce at 616-8979161.

Growing and bringing the arts to the center of town LowellArts! has been around in some form since 1976, promoting art, music, theater and other forms of creative expression in the Lowell area community. Some of their projects include the Fallasburg Fall Festival for the Arts, the West Michigan Regional Art Competition, the Sizzlin' Summer Concerts at the Lowell Showboat and dozens of other events. This summer additional programs include a circus exhibition, drawing classes, theater classes and more. “We're adding additional programs and classes in the arts that we can offer to people in the community, and we have the potential to bring cultural tourism to Lowell,” said Lorain Smalligan, LowellArts! executive director. “We'll bring a lot more people to the downtown area. They'll be coming

for our exhibits, our theater productions, music concerts and classes. The idea is that when they visit us, they continue to move through the downtown area and visit the other businesses. That is really difficult where we are now. Now what we find right now is, people who are interested in coming to see one of our gallery exhibitions will come, see it and then get back in their car and leave. They're not checking out the rest of what's happening in Lowell. So the impact of the move is not going to be bigger than just us, it's going to be the economic impact we have on the whole community. As much as we are Lowell's arts center, we also consider ourselves a regional arts center. We serve a lot of the artists in West Michigan through our programs. By doing that we draw people from outside of Lowell because they're fam-

iliar with the artists that we're bringing to Lowell.” With help from the Lowell Area Community Fund, LowellArts! purchased the former Hallmark/ River Hollow building at 221 and 223 W. Main St. Renovations are currently underway at the new facility. Aside from the normal repairs that old buildings always require, LowellArts! plans to create a downtown arts destination for area residents in their new space. “We [want to] open the walls up to be able to create a big gallery space,” Smalligan said. “We want to, in some area, have some flexible performance space. It really wouldn't seat more than 40 or 50 people because of how much room we have. It could have a modular stage that could be configured as needed. We could use it for classes. One

40

of the areas we really want to expand in is what class offerings we have, especially for youth. If fundraising efforts are sufficient, they plan to complete renovations and move into the new building sometime before the end of 2016. Until then, you'll find them at their old building at 149 S. Hudson. Smalligan said the building they're currently in has served them very well over the years, but LowellArts! has outgrown it. “We wouldn't be an entity right now if the Doyles hadn't let us have that space way back in the late 70s,” Smalligan said. “We've really grown as an organization, and we really need more space. We need a downtown presence. It's really difficult for us to tie into downtown activities where we're located. We've been trying to find the right home for years, so we're excited.”

Bike tours and art festivals at Fallasburg Park Fallasburg Park and Fallasburg Village are beautiful spots to visit and have a picnic or do some other outdoorsy things like that. They also have a huge festival at the end of summer. On July 10 the Fallasburg Historical Society is having their 22nd annual Covered Bridge Bike Tour. “It's a 'ride at your own pace' bike tour through some of West Michigan's

most beautiful countryside, said Fallasburg Historical Society president Ken Tamke. This year the Bike Tour will ask for a $1 pledge from every participant. The money collected will benefit the League of Michigan Bicyclists. This is being done to honor the memory of Larry Martin, a local bicycling enthusiast who was struck and killed by a car in 2011. To find more information about and register for the 22nd annual Covered

Bridge Bike Tour, visit the Fallasburg Historical Society website, www. fallasburg.org, or call 616-682-0785. On Saturday Sept. 17 and Sunday, Sept. 18 LowellArts! will take over the park to host the 48th annual Fallasburg Fall Festival for the Arts. 100 unique fine art and crafts booths, food, live music, a children's area, craft

demonstrations and plenty more will be featured. The Festival is open each day from 10 am until 5 pm and admission is free. Artists from all over the world show up hoping to sell some of their unique pieces for a good price.

Woodland Homecoming Celebration The annual homecoming is Woodland’s way of saying good-bye to summer.

The festival is Sept. 2 to 5 at Herald E. Classic Memorial Park. The parade will be Saturday at 1 p.m. Activities during the weekend include an ice cream social, chili cook-off, softball tournament, fish fry, arts and crafts, dodgeball, chicken barbecue, kids pedal pull, euchre tournament, pie-eating contest, 5K walk, balloon artist, BB gun shoot, horseshoe contest, street dance and more.

Annual Chili Cook-off in Lowell Each year Larkin's Restaurant, 301 W. Main, holds a chili cook-off to raise money for a local charity. The event turns into a great big party that takes over an entire block of downtown with people gobbling chili, drinking, partying and dancing to live music.

This year's chili cook-off will be on Saturday, Oct. 8. All proceeds from the cook-off benefit local charities. In past

years substantial donations have been made to Neighbor to Neighbor, FROM, Lowell Senior Center and many others. “We raise money every year for a different charity,” said Larkin's manager Deb Apol. “Last year we gave $2,800 to the veterans, and they put up a flag pole and a flag in the cemetery. In the 13 years that we've done this we've given almost $30,000. We pick non-profits that don't have the fundamentals to raise money for

themselves. We've given to the volunteer fire department, the Flat River Outreach Ministry, Alpha Women's Center and St. Mary's Pregnancy Center. We keep it local. It doesn't go out of the area at all, it stays right here in Lowell.” “It's always for a good cause local to Lowell,” said Larkin's owner Mike Larkin. “We like to help out. [The chili cook-off] brings people to town. It gets good exposure

for everybody's business. Chili is just chili.” This year the entry fee will be reduced to $25 for each team. Live music will be provided by Homebrewed, who perform bluegrass covers of classic rock and pop songs by artists such as Michael Jackson and AC/DC. The proceeds this year will be donated to LowellArts!, who are in the middle of remodeling a building on Main St.
