THE INTEGRITAS VITAE AWARD is one of Loyola University New Orleans’ highest honors, given annually to an individual of remarkable integrity who has demonstrated through acts and service the ideals of a Jesuit education.
INTEGRITAS VITAE a life of integrity
2023 INTEGRITAS VITAE AWARD RECIPIENT
AMY CYREX SINS ’98 including families in Afghanistan and Ukraine. Her passion for food and culinary skills unite people over meals during a crisis. She describes the group as a “loose band of rogue do-gooders.” While Sins continues to make an impact in communities around the globe, she never forgets about the homefront. Officially earning nonprofit status in 2021, Fill the Needs and Sins provided over $2 million of COVID supplies and assistance to the local hospitality community. Sins continues to stay involved with several local charities, including Son of a Saint and Second Harvest Food Bank.
Amy Cyrex Sins ’98, a New Orleans chef, philanthropist, author, and speaker, is a true example of a servant leader, embodying the Jesuit principle of being a person with and for others. “This award is a testament to Chef Sins’ unwavering commitment to excellence in the culinary world and beyond,” said President Cole. “We want to recognize her dedication to her craft, as well as her exceptional character and the impact she’s made on our community.” A native of Metairie, Louisiana, Sins was raised with a deep reverence for food and entertaining. Growing up in the South, she spent years observing her parents’ elaborate dinner parties. Sins studied communications at Loyola University New Orleans, initially pursuing a career in sales and marketing before shifting to her true passion. During her junior year at Loyola, Sins lost her father and credits the relationships she established at Loyola and the strong campus community with helping to define her character and support her through such a difficult time.
In 2012, she opened Langlois, a next-generation interactive dining restaurant in the Marigny. Four years later, she took Langlois “mobile” to reach a wider audience. Today, Sins describes herself as “the ringleader of the Langlois traveling culinary circus.” Through this unique business model, creating a sense of community has remained central to Langlois. In service to Loyola, she served on the university’s Alumni Board from 2008 to 2017 and as president of the Alumni Association from 2012 to 2014. For several years, she has led a virtual Mardi Gras cooking class for alumni across the country that continues to be one of the most popular and well-attended events.
After graduating from Loyola, Sins started a successful culinary event business, a boutique hotel, and a publishing company. She wrote an award-winning cookbook entitled, Ruby Slippers Cookbook: Life, Culture, Family, and Food After Katrina. Wearing many hats, she stays busy as a culinary historian, a radio show host, and a keynote speaker who continues to inspire aspiring chefs, entrepreneurs, and food enthusiasts alike. Beyond her career accolades, Sins has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to social responsibility and credits her Jesuit education for her drive to serve others.
Despite her remarkable achievements, she remains incredibly humble, attributing her success to following her gut and doing what she believes is right. She encourages others to listen to their inner voice; be relentless in the pursuit of education, ideas, understanding, and relationships; and not shy away from taking risks. She said, “My background from a Jesuit education is being there for others and using your skills to make the world a better place…” In true Jesuit fashion, Amy Sins has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to career excellence and social responsibility, leaving a lasting legacy of integrity in the culinary world and far beyond.
Inspired by the generosity of others in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Sins founded her own disaster relief organization in 2008. Her nonprofit “Fill the Needs,” for which she serves as executive director, helps organize and deliver food, water, and supplies to those affected by natural disasters and serves refugees around the world, 4
