COMMENCEMENT 2010 Loyola University New Orleans cordially invites you and your family to ceremonies honoring the 2010 candidates for graduation from undergraduate and graduate studies from Loyola University New Orleans College of Humanities and Natural Sciences, College of Social Sciences, College of Music and Fine Arts, and College of Business. The commencement ceremony will take place in the Louisiana Superdome, located in downtown New Orleans. The Baccalaureate Mass will be held on campus in Holy Name of Jesus Church. Tickets are not required for the commencement ceremonies in the Louisiana Superdome, and there is no limit on how many guests a graduate may have for commencement. There is no reserved seating in the Superdome. All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. The same holds for the Baccalaureate Mass. FOR G RADUATION All eligible candidates for graduation will be automatically registered for participation in commencement ceremonies based upon their response on the application for graduation. If your intentions have changed since you applied for graduation, you must notify Kathy Gros in the Office of Student Records at (504) 865-3237 or via e-mail at kgros@loyno.edu before April 9, 2010.

G RAD FAIR Information regarding graduation regalia is available through the bookstore. Costs for regalia (cap, gown, hood, and tassel) are included in the $250 graduation fee. In addition to the cap and gown, which graduates may keep following commencement, this fee includes the graduate’s diploma, diploma cover and lifetime transcripts. The 2010 Graduate Fair, which is a “one stop shop” for all graduation needs, will be held Tuesday, March 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the St. Charles Room, located in the Danna Student Center. Students who plan on graduating this May are asked to attend the Grad Fair to order their cap and gown, a requirement for those participating in the commencement ceremony. Additionally, Grad Fair attendees will be able to verify the status of their graduation application with Student Records and meet with representatives from Student Finance and Scholarships and Financial Aid regarding account balances and required Perkins Loan and Stafford Loan exit interviews. Personalized graduation announcements, class rings and formal graduation photographs will also be available for purchase. The Office of Alumni Relations will also be on hand to assist graduates in joining the Alumni Association and distribute invitations to the Annual Senior Crawfish Boil. Graduates who are unable to attend the Grad Fair are asked to contact the bookstore at (504) 865-3262 or via email at dhaydel@loyno.edu regarding regalia and announcements. The deadline for ordering regalia and personalized announcements is March 26. This is the absolute deadline. Any regalia orders placed after March 26 will incur a late fee. Regalia orders placed by the deadline will be available for pickup in the Danna Student Center May 3 – 7. Out-of-town candidates may pick up regalia at the bookstore on Friday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
LODGING ARRANGEMENTS Several blocks of rooms have been reserved at area hotels for the nights of May 6, 7, and 8. All room reservations must be made by the deadlines listed. Any requests received after that will be handled on a space and rate available basis. To make reservations, contact the hotels at the phone numbers listed and ask for the group/event name indicated. BACCALAUREATE MASS U NIVERSITY BACCALAUREATE MASS Loyola’s Baccalaureate Mass will be held Friday, May 7, at 4 p.m., in Holy Name of Jesus Church on the university’s main campus. The service is for all candidates for graduation from the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences, College of Social Sciences, College of Music and Fine Arts, and College of Business. Candidates participating in the Baccalaureate Mass must report to the arcade located on the Thomas Hall side of the Marquette Horseshoe at least 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the service. In accordance with custom, all candidates are required to wear academic caps and gowns, without hoods, throughout the ceremony. Official baccalaureate marshals will be on hand to assist with the procession. When directed, candidates will proceed into the pews on the right or left as indicated and stand facing the center aisle until the celebrants have passed. Mass will proceed as usual. Families and guests should be seated behind the area reserved for candidates. Guest seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
S PECIAL ASSISTANCE If you or a family member will need special physical assistance or designated seating arrangements for the physically impaired for the Baccalaureate Mass, please contact University Ministry at (504) 865-3226 no later than May 3.
BACCALAUREATE MASS PARKING All Loyola parking lots will be open and free of charge on May 7 to accommodate guest parking for the Baccalaureate Mass. Guests may park either in the Marquette Horseshoe, West Road Garage, Freret Street Garage, or the Mercy Hall parking lot. Police officers will be on hand to help direct traffic. Only vehicles with a disabled license plate will be allowed to park in those spaces designated for disabled parking on campus.

UNDERGRADUATE/GRADUATE INFORMATION C OMMENCEMENT C EREMONY On Saturday, May 8, 2010, no later than 8 a.m., all candidates for graduation should report, already robed, to Gate A, located on the Ground Level, Poydras Street side of the Louisiana Superdome. (See map.) Please note that this entrance is for graduates, faculty, staff, and handicapped guests only. In accordance with Superdome event policy, all guests, including graduates, are required to pass through a visual check point upon entering the facility. Please do not bring alcohol, cameras, purses, or other personal items to the graduate entrance. From there, you will be directed to the gathering area for graduates. Instructions will be given regarding the ceremony. Official university ceremony marshals and representatives from Student Records and your college will be on hand to assist. For bachelor’s degree candidates, the tassel on the cap should be worn on the right side until the degree is officially conferred. It should then be switched to the left side. Candidates for a master’s degree should wear their tassels on the left throughout the ceremony. After the processional, upon entering their designated rows, candidates should remain standing until all candidates, faculty, and staff have taken their places. The order of proceedings will be printed in the commencement program. The presentation of degrees will be administered by the dean and associate dean who will instruct candidates to rise at the appropriate time. Presiding marshals will direct candidates to proceed from their seats to the stage. As each name is called, the candidates will proceed to center stage and receive their diploma covers and congratulations from University President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J. Bachelor’s degree candidates will then switch their tassels from the right to the left before exiting the stage at the opposite side. Candidates are asked not to exit from the center of the stage and should remain standing until all fellow graduates from their college have received their diploma covers and their dean has left the podium. All participants should remain in rank throughout the entire ceremony. The event is scheduled to be completed within two hours. Actual diplomas will be mailed to graduates no later than June 18, 2010.

C OMMENCEMENT PARKING Parking for guests attending the commencement ceremony will be available in the Louisiana Superdome Garage #1 (Northeast) and Garage #6 (Northwest). The entrances for both garages are via Poydras Street. Handicapped parking is available in both garages with entry into the Superdome via Gate A, Ground Level, on the Poydras Street side of the Superdome. The cost for parking is $10 per vehicle and is payable in cash only upon entering the parking facilities.
HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBILITY/S EATING The Louisiana Superdome is wheelchair accessible. Handicapped entry into the Superdome is via Gate A, Ground Level, on the Poydras Street side of the Superdome. Handicapped and wheelchair-accessible seating is available on all levels of the Superdome. Seating for Loyola’s commencement will be concentrated on the Plaza Level. If you require handicapped seating, please ask Superdome personnel for directions to the closest available handicapped seating upon your arrival. The Superdome does not provide wheelchairs for transportation to and from handicapped seating. For those who require a wheelchair, it will be necessary to bring one with you.

G RADUATION D ISTINCTIONS FOR U NDERGRADUATES O NLY All candidates for graduation participate without consideration of their final semester grades. Therefore, the commencement program will list distinctions based upon the previous fall grade point average. LOYOLA STUDENT WITH N O TRANSFER WORK For the cum laude distinction, a student’s cumulative average must be 3.5; magna cum laude, 3.7; and summa cum laude, 3.9.
LOYOLA STUDENT WITH TRANSFER WORK For transfer students who complete 60 or more Loyola quality hours, the distinction will be based solely on the Loyola cumulative grade point average. For transfer students who complete fewer than 60 Loyola cumulative quality hours, the distinction will be based on two factors: 1) the Loyola cumulative grade point average; and 2) the combined grade point average of the coursework taken at Loyola and transfer institutions. If the lower of the two averages is 3.5, the distinction will be cum laude; if the lower of the two is 3.7, magna cum laude; and if the lower is 3.9, summa cum laude.
STUDENTS ADMITTED VIA S PECIAL EVALUATION Students who have been granted a special evaluation must have completed 60 or more Loyola quality hours to be considered for graduation distinctions. Distinctions will be based on the student’s Loyola coursework only. Therefore, for the cum laude distinction, a student’s Loyola cumulative average must be 3.5; magna cum laude, 3.7; and summa cum laude, 3.9.

OFFICIAL COMMENCEMENT PHOTOGRAPHS Official commencement photographers will be on hand at the commencement ceremony to photograph each candidate as they receive their diplomas. Photographs can be viewed and ordered 4 – 5 days after the ceremony at: http://orders.gradphotonetwork.com. Graduates will receive an email once the photos are available on the website, along with their pin number, which will allow them to view their individual portraits. A proof order form will be sent out approximately 1 week to 10 days following graduation. This form may be used to order official photographs by mail or fax. For faster service, order online 24/7.
