A Benefit Supporting Loyola Academy’s Tuition Assistance Program
GOING THE EXTRA MILE FROM LESS THAN A MILE AWAY 31 YEARS AND
Dear Friends of Loyola Academy, Welcome to The Grace of Giving, Loyola’s 54th annual Ramble.
For more than half a century, the Ramble has celebrated Loyola Academy’s extraordinary mission, which unites us in faith and fellowship. And, throughout its storied history, the Ramble has remained the single largest fundraising benefit in support of Jesuit education at Loyola.
We gather tonight to celebrate success and provide for the future. With your help, we hope to raise more than $1.4M for Loyola’s Tuition Assistance Program which benefits over 600 Ramblers annually. Our efforts this evening will make the dreams of many young women and men come true.
The Ramble is an extraordinary effort. For their dedication and hard work over many months, my sincerest thanks to our 2023 Ramble Leadership Committee: Diana Barr, Lori and Robert Benvenuto, Lori and George Chiampas ‘89, Dody and Peter Hickey, Monica and Nick Robertson, and Karen Stroble and Chris Irwin. I am grateful for the many volunteers who have shared their time and talents so generously and our special events staff who have poured over every detail to make this night come together in such a special way.
And, finally, to our guests: whether this is your first Ramble or one of many over the years, I welcome you warmly. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Loyola, I thank you all for your spirited participation. How blessed we are to be here tonight— together—celebrating the mission and vision of Loyola Academy.

MARIA VARELA ‘16
Maria Varela is a 2016 Loyola Academy graduate. During her time at Loyola Academy, Maria was heavily involved in theater as both an actor and a set painter, as well as choir and Arrupe service. Maria graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2020 after earning her BFA in Fashion Design, and in September 2022 she obtained her Masters in Textile Design from Bath Spa University in England.
It was her love of designing and knowledge of sewing that ultimately gave her direction when she started at Loyola Academy. “It was the first time I was actually supported and celebrated for my creativity. Up until then it had always been a hobby or a dream. I had worked with the majority of the fine arts faculty throughout my time at Loyola, and whenever I told one of them I wanted to be a fashion designer, they all cheered me on. They had the kind of energy that said “yes! GO DO IT!”
Beyond her creativity, Maria has carried her Jesuit education with her by being a woman for others. As a Loyola student, she participated in service learning classes, through which she would visit a men’s homeless shelter in downtown Chicago. After graduating from Loyola, Maria continued to serve her community during college. In 2020, during the pandemic, Maria founded #columbiamakesmasks, an initiative that sent sewing kits out to Columbia students to help make fabric masks to support healthcare workers. Maria alone made 1,100 masks, and supported the initiative to help other students make hundreds more.
Most recently, Maria worked with a group of students to design and make the Queen of Hearts costume for the school’s recent performance of Alice in Wonderland.

Fore! Golf Outing for Nine (9) at Lake Bluff’s Shoreacres
Shoreacres, located on the lake in Lake Bluff, IL, is one of golf’s finest courses thanks to architect Seth Raynor. The challenge of Shoreacres is not its lengththe course has a par of 71 and a slope of 136 from the Raynor tees but measures just 6,327 yards.
The course’s greatest asset is the dramatic ravine that winds through the property. Established in 1916, Raynor effectively used the ravine in a variety of ways throughout the course to create some of the best holes in the world. The acclaimed stretch from the 10th to 15th holes is regarded as Raynor’s finest. On the holes that don’t interact with the ravines, Raynor wisely placed his boldest greens and design features.
This is a special opportunity for you and eight golf buddies (3 threesomes) to join three club members —Spencer Cotten ‘84, Hanley Dawson IV ‘86, and Doug Thompson ‘86 — and test their golf skills at the private, members-only golf club, currently ranked #54 on Golf Digest Top US 100, #25 on Golf Magazine US 100, and #19 on Golfweek Top 100.
After your round of golf, the group will head to the David Adler-designed clubhouse, set on the top of the bluff overlooking beautiful Lake Michigan, for drinks and lunch.

It’s a great day to be a Rambler!
My name is Zoey Kenny (class of 2023) and my dad is a partner at Scott Simpson Design+ Build. I have grown up accompanying my dad to work. He has taught me how to inspire grace and magnificence in other people, both in how he, along with his team, builds and design architecturally significant homes and in how he treats his clients and coworkers. SSDB is selfless and reliable. I aspire to work with the same passion that my dad and the rest of the company do. He encourages me to find a job that I enjoy as much as he loves his, because then, I won’t have to work a day in my life.

And special thanks to the many staff and faculty members at Loyola Academy for helping to share the grace of giving with the production of this year’s Ramble. We could not have done it without the support of the Loyola community!
