Dear Rambler Community, I can imagine when the Ramble was first proposed by Fr. Reinke back in 1969 some thought it was a crazy idea. Could they pull it off? Could they mobilize the Loyola community to mount an extravaganza that would fuel the engine of tuition assistance? How would it work? Clearly the doubters underestimated the spirit of Loyola because for fifty years now, this extraordinary community has rallied together in a party that has become the gold standard. For more than a half century, the Ramble has stoked a fire of generosity and philanthropy that has helped make our community what it is today. Ramble celebrates the extraordinary mission we share which springs from the vision of St. Ignatius Loyola. One of Ignatius’s favorite ideas was how God is constantly calling us to “magis” or “more.” Specifically, how can we make a more generous response to the invitation that God is constantly offering us? How might we become more and more the people that God has created us to be? Your generosity tonight helps fuel those dreams for the next generation of Ramblers. At this fiftieth annual Ramble, we have the opportunity to raise more than $1,300,000 for Loyola’s Tuition Assistance Program which benefits over 600 Ramblers annually. Together, we invest in the future of Loyola Ramblers whose holy boldness will change the world. With your help, we will meet the challenge of providing assistance for qualified students who want to be part of this life-changing Jesuit mission. Let’s help our Ramblers become more for the greater glory of God! The Ramble is an extraordinary effort of so many who do so much to bring us all together in celebration and generosity. Tonight we are particularly grateful for the legion of volunteers who have kept the Ramble dream alive for fifty years! On behalf of all of us who benefit from the Ramble, I am especially grateful to the leaders of this year’s Ramble, Wendy Beard, Michaela D’Arrigo, Catherine Sullivan, and Sandy Walker, and the huge crew of dedicated volunteers who have helped to make this night so special. On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of Loyola, I thank you all for your spirited participation. Gratefully,
Patrick E. McGrath, S.J. President

Dear Friends, Welcome to Loyola Academy’s 50th Ramble, We Are Golden. During our months of planning, we became fascinated with the history behind this original initiative. We learned that in 1969, there was a fire in the school which left the Loyola library heavily damaged. At that time, it was suggested to Fr. Reinke that the school community come together to raise funds for its restoration. Being a relatively new concept, an auctioneer was consulted who encouraged the school to “think big” about what it could raise and go beyond the repair of its building. And that is where this cherished annual tradition began… In April 1970, administration and volunteers had the vision to transform the East Gym into a French Market for an evening and raise money into the early hours of the morning. Within a few years, the focus turned entirely to raising funds for tuition assistance. This tradition continues today to ensure that qualified students can attend Loyola Academy regardless of their ability to pay. And thus, this year we celebrate our Golden Anniversary, one that could not be possible without the dedication, enthusiasm and generosity of so many people in support of our vision. The legacy of this initiative is not only the thousands of students who have walked our halls but also the thousands of volunteers that have shared their gifts, time and talents to create these successful events. We would like to thank our many dedicated volunteers who have helped make this year’s Ramble a memorable and meaningful celebration. Our acknowledgements are not complete without also recognizing the Loyola Academy faculty and staff who have worked diligently behind the scenes. The generosity of so many has been truly overwhelming. Whether you have supported the silent or live auction, purchased a raffle ticket, attended the event or simply offered a word of encouragement during this process, you have our gratitude. Thank you for joining us this evening to celebrate the mission of what makes Loyola Academy Golden. Sincerely, Wendy Beard
Michaela D’Arrigo

How It All Began It all began with a fire! What? Yes! In the late afternoon of Ash Wednesday in 1969, a fire broke out in the Student Library, at that time located in the northern half of the basement of the East Wing. Though it was mostly a smoky fire, the water and smoke damage to the library collection was quite significant. The immediate question was--how does the school recover from such a calamity? Loyola's President, Fr. John Reinke, S.J., began to look for answers. That summer, while flying back to Chicago from the East Coast, Fr. Reinke read a magazine article about a gentleman named Paul Friedlander, a jeweler from Seattle, who had been organizing auctions for non-profit organizations such as the Seattle Symphony, Jesuit Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma, etc. In the summer of 1969, Fr. Reinke wrote to him and the rest, as they say, is history! Prior to the announcement of our first auction, it was decided that its goal should not just be to raise money for the replacement of the library collection but also to raise a large capital fund to inject new life into the economic bloodstream of Loyola Academy and to provide the wherewithal for scholarships and other worthy projects at the Academy. Originally, Loyola wanted to have its first auction in December 1969, but Paul Friedlander said we could probably raise only $75,000 with that time frame. If we wanted to raise $150,000 to $200,000, the event should be held in the spring. We wisely took his advice. Gen. Jack Gleason and his wife, Mary Jane, were our first chaircouple, as "the Ramble" was scheduled for April 11, 1970, the only time it has not been held in May. The theme of our first Ramble was an outdoor French marketplace in the springtime. The gym bleachers were covered with green and white striped paper with canopies of the same decoration covering the stalls which contained the various categories of silent auction items. There were masses of multicolored balloons throughout the gym, as well as spring flowers everywhere. It was a colorful beginning to a long line of beautifully decorated Rambles up to this very day. Many people have asked me to recount my memories of the early years of this wonderful night we call the Ramble. That would take volumes! But maybe we have time for these two: (1) In 1972, as I was greeting people near the original front entrance at the switchboard, a woman came up to me and asked, "Father, I am interested in an oral auction item but it is not listed in my catalogue." I inquired where she saw it displayed. She led me to the chapel and there was a closed casket! I said, "I really don't think that is up for bidding because it contains a deceased Jesuit whose funeral is on Monday!" So much for her funeral planning! (2) Several years later, Torch Club members were manning the three TVs with locks on them and selling the $10 keys, three of which would open the locks at the end of the evening for the lucky key holders. It just so happened that a Blackhawks' Stanley Cup game was airing that night. At the beginning of the 3rd period, Jean Corby, the indomitable genius behind so many Rambles, came up to me and said, "Jim, we have to turn down the sound on the TVs because it's distracting the auctioneer” (who was nearby). I replied, "Jean, every time the Blackhawks score a goal, that guy over there buys 20 more keys." Jean answered, “Well, for God's sake, then turn the sound up!" That was our beloved Jean! I hope you enjoyed this walk down the Ramble’s memory lane and that you enjoy the 50th rendition of this remarkable event in Loyola's history, an event that has spread to many other Jesuit high schools throughout the United States. HAVE FUN! Rev. James C. L. Arimond, S.J.

Ramble Continues On Saturday, May 4, we celebrate the 50th annual Ramble, which is our largest fundraising event of the year. We have the opportunity to raise $1,300,000 for Loyola’s generous tuition assistance program, which benefits over 500 students annually. Founded in 1909, Loyola Academy’s mission is to form women and men for others in service and leadership for the world in imitation of Jesus Christ. Loyola is committed to the full development of the whole person. Cura personalis, a Latin phrase meaning “care for the person,” is at the core of our Jesuit mission. Our curriculum thoughtfully and intentionally integrates the academic, spiritual, emotional and physical development of our students with the experience of service to others. Loyola students are not required to participate in school sponsored service activities; however, approximately 90% of the Class of 2019 participated in voluntary service work. With approximately 2,000 students enrolled in grades 9–12, Loyola Academy is the largest Jesuit college preparatory high school in the United States. Loyola draws students of diverse backgrounds from over 150 elementary and junior high schools throughout the City of Chicago and its suburbs. To maintain this diversity, $4 million in financial aid was awarded to 25% of our student body during the 2018–2019 school year. This financial commitment enables students from all socioeconomic backgrounds to attend. Loyola Academy admits students of any race, color and national origin or ethnic origin. All of Loyola’s programs of study are college preparatory, with 98% of the graduating class enrolling in four-year institutions. Loyola participates in 24 different sports, offering students a chance to play on over 80 different teams.
