Commissioner’s Cup Champions
Loyola earned its record ninth California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Commissioner’s Cup in 2017 as the top overall boys’ athletics program by capturing one championship title in golf, with second place finishes in swimming/diving and volleyball along with semifinal appearances in basketball and water polo in addition to a fourthplace finish in cross country. Loyola tallied 16 points, winning the Cup for the second consecutive year within its nine overall titles. The Cubs also were the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section champions.

Meet some of our innovators. Director of Equity & Inclusion and Social Science teacher Mr. Jamal Adams ’90 presented “Cultivating a Safe Space for Courageous Dialogues: Establishing an Office of Equity and Inclusion on a (Jesuit) High School Campus,” at the 2016 Jesuit School Networks’ National Gathering of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion directors. Economics teacher Mr. Brian Held ’93 lets his passion for economics guide student achievement and engagement, expanding the touchpoint beyond Loyola. He partnered with Executive Director Jim Charkins of the California Council on Economic Education (CCEE) to pilot a program at Loyola High School that introduces fundamental economic concepts to children in low-income schools. Utilizing children’s literature, Mr. Held and his AP Econ students set out to teach elementary students about the concept of human capital. Mr. Held notes that “human capital refers to the total of a person’s knowledge, skills and abilities that produce a contribution to society, or an economic value. Everyone has something to offer the world. Your talents, interest, education—even your hands—these all have real intrinsic value.” Assistant Principal for Student Life and Director of Counseling Dr. Paul Jordan ’88 received the 2017 Creighton University Graduate School Outstanding Dissertation Award for “Investigating ‘Return to Learn’ Practices For Concussed Students: One Jesuit High School’s Approach.” Thanks to the scholarly research of Dr. Jordan, Loyola was the first high school in the United States to implement a school-wide concussion protocol. He and Athletic Trainer Tim Moscicki and he travel across the United States presenting to other high schools on the importance of this practice.
Latin teacher Mrs. Teresa Kawamata is at the forefront of her field in Latin. Over the last 10 years, she served on the College Board in various capacities, most notably as a trendsetter—she was the first high school teacher to ever serve on the AP Exam Development Committee (2007–2011). Additionally, she has worked as an Advanced Placement (AP) consultant, co-chair of the Latin AP Test Development Committee (2011–2015) and as a reader for the AP Latin Exam (2004–2012, 2013). During the 2016–2017 school year, she led her classes to receive a 100 percent pass rate on the AP Latin Exam. Director of Faculty: Classroom, Instruction, Assessment and Equity and Spanishlanguage teacher Dr. Ricardo Pedroarias ‘84, Dr. Paul Jordan ‘88, Counselor Gina Liberotti, Counselor Dr. Evelyn Mabra and Director of Community Service Dr. Jesse Rodriguez co-authored and presented their research entitled “Reflecting on the Process: Findings from Loyola High School’s First-Generation Project” at the National Catholic Educational Association, Momentum 2016. Additionally, during the 2016–2017 school year, Dr. Pedroarias led his classes to receive a 100 percent pass rate on the AP Spanish Literature Exam. History teacher Mr. James Zucker ’91 created an animated five-minute video for classroom use about Rene Descartes’ philosophy for the Enlightenment and the method of doubt for TED-Ed in 2014. He has also served as a College Board reader for AP World History since 2005 and as an AP US and AP World History Exam consultant.

Intercambio is Loyola’s unique service, Spanish-language and cultural immersion summer program in Argentina and Uruguay. Here students and chaperones are pictured near the ruins of the 17th century Jesuit mission near Iguazu Falls in northeastern Argentina. Over the course of the 16th, 17th and 18th century, the Jesuits occupied a number of missions in this region of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. 10

The Senior Service Project Since 1981, the Senior Service Project (SSP) has been the capstone experience for students during their four-year formational process. The three-week project will require you to directly apply the principle of being a Man for and with Others. All classes are suspended and Los Angeles County becomes your classroom as you report to inner-city hospitals, special education schools, soup kitchens and shelters during normal school hours. Eleven thousand four hundred college-bound students have completed the SSP since its inception 36 years ago. ADMISSIONS VIE WBOOK

A Man of Innovation
Tim Guiteras ’17 “Photography has helped me go to new places that I wouldn’t normally explore. One of my favorite teachers taught me to explore the idea of inquiry through photography. This mindset has definitely helped me with innovation—wanting to learn and ultimately, wanting to solve problems in the world.” Tim was one of 34 students selected out of over 300 applicants to pursue a course of study at the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and Business Innovation at the University of Southern California. Sean Lee ’17 “Loyola is definitely the tightest community that I’ve ever experienced. It is an atmosphere that I don’t think you can get anywhere else. I always thought that being the best at something was an obligation, but at Loyola, teachers, counselors and coaches support and encourage you to do what you love, regardless of whether you’re good at it. They encourage you to follow your heart, trust your instincts and go from there.” Sean matriculated at the University of Pennsylvania to pursue his BA in Economics and continue his swimming career. 22

Ceasar Arreola ’17 “Loyola is about becoming a man. Community service has changed my whole perspective on life and really got me thinking about my place in the world. Loyola is a resource that provides the right tools for the real world.” Ceasar matriculated at Cerritos College to pursue civil engineering with a goal of transferring to the University of Southern California.

A Man of Discipline Sean O’Malley ’17 “The biggest lesson that I learned being a studentathlete at Loyola is time management and the importance of budgeting my time. This is a skill that I will carry with me throughout my life. What makes Loyola special is the social justice classes. The teachers don’t really tell you what to believe and what not to believe. They allow you to set your own compass. They want you to be an individual while guiding you in the right direction.” Sean matriculated at Lafayette College to pursue his BA in Economics and continue his football career. Sean beat out seven other players to start at quarterback—the first freshman to do so since 1986.

Trejon Shelton ’17 “Loyola taught me about the importance of having an open mind and cultivating a better appreciation of diversity and differences. It doesn’t just apply to people and their respective cultures, even though that’s a big aspect of Loyola. This school is all about preparing you for the real world because you can’t be afraid to try new things.” Trejon matriculated at Tulane University to pursue a BA in International Relations with a minor in Mandarin. He attends the University as a Posse Foundation Scholar, which covers full tuition and fees for four years.
