AUCTION 2014

Dear Friends of Loyola School, Spring weather is finally here! After a long, or should I say very long, winter, it is a great joy to honor our departing Headmaster and incoming Math Department Chair, Mr. James F.X. Lyness, at this year’s auction benefit, Open to Growth. I often refer to Jim Lyness as a “Renaissance Man.” Not only has Jim served as Loyola’s Headmaster for the past ten years, but he has also taught math, led our forensics program (the National Catholic Forensic League’s Dramatic Performance Award is named in his honor), directed dozens of Loyola School plays and musicals, and was even the programmer for Loyola’s first grading software. Those professional accomplishments are indeed impressive, and Jim’s close to four decade commitment to Jesuit education is equally remarkable. It is not an exaggeration to say that Jim’s voice, ideas, and respected opinion, within the circles of secondary school Ignatian education, have truly resonated nationally. Loyola’s annual benefit auction is our most important fundraising event of the year. At Open to Growth, we are very grateful for the auction gifts received; the journal ads taken; the underwriting offered; the tables sponsored; the raffle tickets purchased; and the wonderful volunteer efforts put forth. I am sure that our attendees are wowed by the work of our Decorating Chair, Patricia Scarpelli, P’15, ’16. Our wonderful volunteers were brought together this evening by the Volunteer Chair Delia Schulte, P’15. The Silent Auction is filled with lots of terrific items because of the efforts of Chairs from our junior class, Geraldine Coffey (also the mother of a sophomore and an alumnus), Nella Pramberger, and Geraldine Smyth. The live fun tonight is brought to us by our dedicated Live Auction Chair, Roxanne Donovan, P’15, ’17 – who encourages all to bid, bid, bid! Our class baskets are filled with a variety of treats because of Chair, Trish Tobin, P’14, ’17. Behind the scenes, helping manage our journal and photo efforts were Rosario Baldwin, P’16 and Stephanie Spalding, P’15. And, of course, our dedicated and wonderfully creative Auction Chairs of Open to Growth are Suzanne Muller, P’14 & Dina Rose, P’12, ’16. We cannot forget to acknowledge the work of our Advancement Office, as well. Advancement Associate, Kate Fiscus managed our Journal efforts along with so many finer details and Vessy Shestorkina, our Auction Intern, was right by Kate’s side to assist. Our Alumni Director, Mary Ann Minson ’99 helped our volunteers organize gifts received and event setup. Our Director of Advancement and Parent Annual Giving, Laura G. Campbell ’96, has also put in tireless hours in bringing all of us together to celebrate our Loyola School. All the while, our Vice President for Advancement, Francesca Lanning ’84, has led the way in creating this wonderful evening. Thank you for your support. Please do review the tribute ads within this journal which salute our honoree, acknowledge student and faculty accomplishments, and describe services offered by merchants within our Loyola School community. Now, let’s help Open to Growth make great things happen for Loyola School. Bid, Bid, Bid!

Sincerely,

Tony Oroszlany ’87 President

PARENTS ASSOCIATION AUCTION 2014

Dear Families, Friends and Alumni of Loyola School, On behalf of the Parents Association, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Loyola School’s 22nd Annual Spring Benefit, Open To Growth. This year’s theme reminds us why we send our children to a Jesuit college preparatory school… to give them a safe place where they can take chances to “develop their own God-given talents, find some they may not have recognized before, and in the process, come to value the unique talents of each of their classmates” to quote this year’s honoree, Headmaster, Jim Lyness. Dr. Forest Witcraft said, “A hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had in the bank…but the world may be a better place because I made a difference in the life of a child.” I think we can all, most assuredly, agree that the world will be a better place because of Jim Lyness’ leadership these last 10 years. Jim, we want you to know that we sincerely appreciate all your hard work and leadership and are truly grateful that you will not be leaving us, but moving on to become our Math Department Chair next year and getting back to the thing you love the most…teaching our children. We are so grateful that Jim will be around to help Tony Oroszlany, our President, acclimate our new Principal, Kristin Ross. Together, they will guide us into the future and the continued success of this unique school. They lead a dedicated Faculty and Administrative Staff that touch the lives of our children by placing the highest value on the care and concern for the whole person. Although this is the first time our Auction Co-Chairs, Suzanne Muller and Dina Rose, have tried their hand at spearheading our auction, they have both worn many hats during their time at Loyola. They have once again shown their resolve, resilience and organizational skills with this wonderful evening you will enjoy tonight. We offer a special thank you for their dedication to making this a new experience for all of us. Helping them turn tonight into an extra special evening is Patricia Scarpelli, our Decorating Chair, her tireless team, and current parent, James Della Pace, President and CEO of Amerivents, an event staffing and management firm that has stepped forward to help us transform Wallace Hall into the beautiful event space you see here tonight. Roxanne Donovan, our Live Auction Chair, has put her never ending energy into pulling together an amazing list of Live items for you to bid on. Geraldine Coffey, Nella Pramberger and Geraldine Smyth, our Silent Auction Chairs, have proved to be a force to be reckoned with when going around town asking local vendors for donations. Wait until you see the prizes they have amassed. For a second year, Trish Tobin, our Class Baskets Chair, has been able to create beautiful “baskets” filled with generous donations from our parents. Delia Schulte, our Volunteer Chair, has coordinated the many helping hands that have worked for months leading to tonight. Stephanie Spalding, the Photography Chair, has tirelessly worked for many hours photographing the prizes for the on-line catalog of auction items. Finally, we acknowledge Rosario Baldwin, our Journal Chair, for creating this beautiful journal. Thank you to everyone who helped arrange this evening—it truly takes a village. As usual, our amazing Advancement Office has helped us to pull everything together without a hitch. Laura Campbell, Director of Advancement, has coordinated the entire Benefit Auction under the dedication and perseverance of Francesca Lanning, our Vice President for Advancement. Kate Fiscus in the Advancement Office along with Mary Ann Minson and Vessy Shestorkina, provided support every step of the way. This dedicated team has made our 22nd Annual Benefit Auction the wonderful event you are enjoying this evening. Thank you for coming tonight, thereby not only helping Loyola School achieve its mission, but for helping us honor Jim Lyness and let’s help him to remember that he has promised to continue leading our Christmas sing-a-long! Sincerely, Loyola School Parents Association

Honoree Biography HONOREE:

Headmaster, James F.X. Lyness Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Mr. James F.X. Lyness grew up in the suburbs of the city and later attended Loyola Blakefield, the local Jesuit high school. Jim’s connection to Jesuit education continued with his undergraduate and graduate studies at Boston College where he earned an A.B. and M.S.T. He then went on to Manhattan College where he earned an M.S. in Education. With a passion for the theatre and movies and a talent for singing and performing, Jim set his sights on New York City! Though he had every intention of becoming a musical comedy actor, he moved to the Big Apple after accepting a teaching position at Loyola School. His new profession certainly allowed him to perform in front of many classrooms full of students. During his over 30 years at Loyola, Jim Lyness has worn many hats, he has served as chair of the mathematics department and was the school’s first technology director with the advent of computers. He has taught math, speech, theatre, and computer courses. In addition, Jim was coach and moderator of the Speech and Debate team, during which time Loyola had several state and national champions. He served the high school speech and debate community for many years as the president of the New York Catholic Forensic League and as a national officer and the Grand Tournament Director for the National Catholic Forensic League, where the 1st place trophy in Dramatic Performance is named in his honor. At both Loyola and Regis, Jim directed numerous plays and musicals. He has also been involved in many of the colloquia and symposia offerings of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association and has served on the New York Province’s Secondary School Advisory Board. Chaperoning student trips aligned with Mr. Lyness’ love of travel and, through his dedicated involvement in the national speech and debate activities, he was also able to visit many cities around the country. Mr. Lyness’ favorite travel destinations are Paris and Venice and he particularly enjoys spending time on the seashore and takes great pleasure in long beach walks any time of the year. After 22 years at Loyola, Mr. Lyness took a break and joined Regis High School for five years as the Assistant Principal for Academics. This role prepared him to return to Loyola in 2004 as Headmaster – a position he has held for the last 10 years. As Headmaster, he is immensely proud of helping to reintegrate the Grad at Grad characteristics into the fabric of life here at Loyola and for moving the school forward in technology by making the decision to include iPad use in the classroom for all faculty and students. In the fall, Mr. Lyness will return to what he loves most – teaching – as he once again takes on the role of chair of the mathematics department here at Loyola. Though he will switch titles and office locations, he will continue to be a guiding light and admired leader within the Loyola community.

A Sincere Tribute To Mr. James Lyness – “His Contributions to the Loyola Family and Its Students are Timeless” There are days I can still see you standing in the back of the room when I am speaking in front of large groups and I can feel in my words sounds that used to need your correction have become natural. It is during these moments that I smile fondly knowing your lessons, guidance, and instruction are always with me. They have become part of the fabric of my presentation in this world. I commend your talent, your spirit, your perseverance, your patience, and most of all your “openness to growth” in each individual student, friend or colleague who has had the honor of standing and working beside you. I thank you today and always for the impact you have had on my life. You are not only a true leader with many God given gifts but also a prime example of a “man for others.” With Admiration and Best Wishes Always, Jean-Marie Ciaffone, Class of 2000
