Fr. Dean Brackley, S.J., Memorial Mass In March of 2011, Fr. Dean Brackley, S.J., visited Loyola School to serve as the keynote speaker for Ignatian Awareness Day. Coming just a few weeks before the 30th anniversary of the death of Archbishop Oscar Romero, the theme of the day was “Perspectives on El Salvador – Why We Remember.” Fr. Brackley spoke of his own work in El Salvador as well as that of his Jesuit predecessors and Archbishop Romero. Just a few months later, he welcomed Loyola’s Campus Minister, Ms. Baber, then-President, Fr. Katsouros, S.J., Technology Director, Mr. Richroath, and new Loyola trustee, Fr. Reiser, S.J. to the Universidad Centroamericana in San Salvador during their pilgrimage in El Salvador. Fr. Brackley died on October 16th in El Salvador. On Wednesday, November 16th at 6 PM, the New York Province of the Society of Jesus and Fordham University will host a memorial mass in the Fordham University Church on the Rose Hill campus to honor the life and work of Father Dean Brackley, S.J. Formerly of the New York Province, Fr. Brackley worked for nearly 10 years in the South Bronx and a year teaching at Fordham. Fr. Brackley volunteered in 1990 to go to El Salvador to continue the work of the six Jesuit priests and two women at the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) who had been murdered. Fr. Brackley served as a professor, academic administrator, and pastoral minister to students and poor communities in El Salvador for the remainder of his life. Fr. Brackley's funeral was held in the chapel at the UCA, and he was buried in El Salvador, according to his own wishes. The memorial mass at Fordham University will take place on the 22nd anniversary of the death of the six UCA Jesuits and their companions. The mass will be followed by a community reflection and reception where guests will have an opportunity to share their memories of Fr. Brackley. This memorial is open to the public.
