RESEARCH
Since its foundation, CAM has carried out a multidisciplinary scientific investigation in the area of social sciences. Besides a particular interest in history and archaeology, its work groups also dedicate themselves to local history, historic, artistic and cultural heritage, museology and anthropology. In archaeology we point out the programmed and emergency excavations in the village of Mértola and other sites of the region, the survey of the archaeological chart and the conclusion of the following projects: "Investigation in Mediaeval and Islamic Archaeology" (19871990), "Archaeological Study of the Islamic Quarter of Mértola" (1993-1996), "Roman Mértola, a Study of Spatial Archaeology" (1993-1996), "Islamic Mértola. Economic Resources and Dail Life" (1997-1999) and "Mértola -History and archaeology of the low Middle Ages" (2001-2003) financed by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT). The project "Archaeological excavations in Mértola 1999-2002" was included in the PNTA promoted by IPA. Regarding local history stand out the project "Documental Investigation on Mértola's Local History" (1989-1993) supported by the MCT and the reorganisation and opening to the public of the Municipal Historic Archives. In the area of heritage study and valorisation we can mention the projects "Religious Imagery from the municipality of Mértola -Inventory, study and museographic organisation" (1991-1994), "The urban core of Mértola –Historic Lines and Functional Organisation" (1991-1994) and "Architectonic Heritage and traditional building techniques" (1997-2000) supported by the MCT. The most relevant work in the scientific area of cultural anthropology are the survey and revitalization of the traditional weaving and the research projects "Pennyroyal, blankets and bread -a study on ethnotechnologies" (1992-1994) and "Social change and eating habits in the Municipality of Mértola (1960- 1990)" (1997-2001), supported by the MCT.

CAM’S CURRICULUM VITAE
Between 2003 and 2007 CAM was an autonomous Investigation Unit, inserted within the multi-annual financial programme for the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). Four lines of work are developed within this programme: 1. Archaeological remains of daily life (Person in charge: Cláudio Torres) The main objective of this line of research is the study of daily life in Islamic Mértola, using the archaeological artefacts linked with everyday use as the main resource. 2. Mértola in Late Antiquity and its evolution as an Islamic society (Person in charge: Cláudio Torres). The main objective of this line involves the historic and archaeological study of the city’s noble area, as well as analysis of the special organization and function of the buildings that are situated there. 3. The Islamic Necropolis of Mértola (Cláudio Torres and Dominique Le Bars). This project is intended for the study of the Moslem cemetery at Rossio do Carmo (Mértola), one of the rare burial places of the Islamic period (8th to 13th centuries). 4. Language and History of the North-South border (Person in charge: Manuela Barros Ferreira). Discover Islamic Art – Mértola’s Archaeological Site collaborates with the Museum without Frontiers in the project ―Discover Islamic Art‖, financed by the Euromed Heritage programme. “The Study of Islamic Ceramics in Mértola” –The project ―The Study of Islamic Ceramics in Mértola‖ promoted by the Mértola’s Town Council and inserted within The Investigation Support Programme and the Study of Collections within the Portuguese Museum Network, was developed by CAM. The Recovery of the Monte Mosteiro Chapel A small chapel has been preserved at Monte Mosteiro (Monastery), witness to the historical evolution of a place that was once a Roman villa, a monastery in the Middle Ages, a small chapel in the 1700s and, finally, a straw barn. At present it is the Property of the Town Council of Mértola that promotes its architectural recovery in partnership with CAM, the Professional School and ADPM (Local Development Agency). We hope to transform this space into a museum nucleus in the near future. This will help to interpret the successive occupation of this place and its relationship with the surrounding territory where the ancient road that linked Mértola to Beja is registered. Historical and Archaeological Heritage in Mértola and Niebla (PATNIME) The aim of this project is the study of the historical and archaeological heritage of these two Local authority areas that, in the past, were neighbouring political entities. The project, supported by the INTERREG IIIA programme relies on financing from FEDER. It is the result of a joint initiative by Mértola’s Town Council and the University of Huelva and is being carried out with the collaboration of Mértola’s Archaeological Site.

RESEARCH SINCE 2007
Since 2007, Mértola’s Archaeological Site and the Centre for Archaeological Studies of the Universities of Coimbra and Porto have joined forces in the creation of a single Investigation Unit with the intention of maximising and stimulating historical, artistic and archaeological study from a multi- disciplinary perspective. The new centre aims to be a place for meeting, debate and reflection on the content and methodologies of investigation in its multiple geographic and chronological dimensions. Also to be a platform for participation and promotion of actions held in common by various groups or elements of different groups. Thus, it takes on to link references coming from the convergence of transversal investigation both within the Unit and on an international scale, and as a point of attraction and framework for researchers, principally for post-doctorate courses. The investigation is focussed on Thematic Areas (Archaeologies, Arcae – geography, Places, colonisations and identities, Cultural Infrastructures, Techniques and Technologies, Epistemology, Arts) and is developed in six Investigation Groups: Places from Recent Pre- history to Ancient Proto-history Archaeology of Lusitânia: structures and dynamics Archaeology in Medieval and Modern places Archaeography Multidisciplinary Art Studies The Investigation Group ―Archaeology in Medieval and Modern places‖ is based in the Campo Arqueológico de Mértola. Within the multidisciplinary spirit which presides at the Group, the intention was to develop several autonomous lines of research which are linked in various ways between them and in accordance with the objectives of the project. The group’s general objectives, dealt with an approach to the long term historic evolution of the Western Iberian Peninsula using multidisciplinary methodologies. Special emphasis are given to research on

phenomena of continuity and discontinuity within the Portuguese territory from the end of Antiquity onwards. Within the context of historical and archaeological research, the objectives of the working party were specifically related to the following themes: — The Transition from Late Antiquity to the Islamic period. The study was directed at the processes of continuity and discontinuity between these two periods within the Beja district, especially in Mértola, Beja and Moura. Continuity will be given to research in conjunction with the RG Archaeology of Lusitania: structures and dynamics. The results of the research will be made known by means of an international scientific meeting to be organized by Santiago Macias and Virgílio Lopes in Mértola in 2012, and also by various publications. — Territories, borders, identities and inheritances from the Medieval and Modern periods. Knowledge was put into perspective about the unequal and inconstant ways of occupying areas long term, between the end of the Roman period and the dawning of the Modern era, especially border landscapes and identities. Given the vastness of this line of research, the specific case of the city of Coimbra was opted for, being a border city with an important territorial dimension and having a notable cultural inheritance. — Archaeology and Territory of the Lower Marca (8th to 13th century) Strategies of peopling areas and models for organizing territories were studied, starting from the Moslem presence, when the area between the Douro and the Tagus were part of the Lower Marca, and continuing until its integration within the Christian area.

— Urban Topography: The city of Mértola. The general aim was to study the historic development of the urban fabric of the town of Mértola as a contribution to the understanding of the urban dynamics of the Medieval and modern city. The task of making the results known to the general public will be channeled via the creation of a museum at the Beira Rio Guest house, focusing on the historic development of the riverside outskirts in Mértola. — Funeral Archaeology This course of action, in collaboration with Coimbra University’s Research Centre in Anthropology and Health, looked at the sociocultural and bio-anthropological characterization of ancient populations, in such a way as to explain fundamental questions about continuity and rupture in groups of humans in the past, especially in the case study of Mértola. — Islamic ceramics in the Mediterranean – The general aim was the systemization of the Gharb al-Ândalus Islamic ceramics (CIGA), the studies of particularly significant collections, especially the study of ceramics found on various excavations of archaeological sites in the Alentejo. —Ethno- Archaeology. This course of action was especially aimed at the social and historic study of rural communities. It is centred on a study of the way of life in the rural Mediterranean, in the country community of Mértola, and on rural architecture from the Algarve mountainous region. —Language and History. This interdisciplinary, international project aimed to deepen the study of some border idioms, closely linked with the history of the border strip between Portugal and Spain, from Bragança-Zamora to Faro-Huelva.
