OUR MISSION Malachi House, created out of a Christian sense of ministry, serves persons who are terminally ill, without regard to gender, race, religion, or national origin and without cost to the resident or family. This home ministers to individuals who need an available caregiver, who have limited or no financial resources and are in need of special home care in the final stages of life. Our trained staff and volunteers provide spiritual, emotional and physical support with the assistance of a hospice team.

THE MALACHI HOUSE CHAPEL WINDOWS
The iris, or sword lily, represents the sorrow of the Virgin at the suffering of Jesus, demonstrating both beauty and pain. The prisms throw rainbows into the room, the symbol of promise for lives filled with the mystery of suffering. They are like magic – sometimes there and sometimes not. They interact between heaven and earth, with nature and God. The river represents life; it takes us places that we sometimes don’t want to go. Life’s hardships are shown through the twisted turns that eventually take us back to the rising sun, the Resurrection.

FINDING FAMILY AT MALACHI HOUSE
The Journey of Faye
Long Beach, California, served as the backdrop for Faye’s childhood, where she grew up in a bustling household as one of ten siblings. From an early age, Faye’s passion for theater and drama set her apart, as she seamlessly intertwined her love for the arts with her studies. Even with a full house, Faye managed to maintain an active social life and actively engaged in volunteer work, making a positive impact in her community. Fate eventually led Faye to Romulus, Michigan, where she continued to embrace life’s experience and worked at the airport, creating new relationships daily. Faye faced the heartbreaking loss of her only son. Despite this unimaginable sorrow, Faye discovered strength in her extended family, filled with nieces and nephews who became a source of support and love during difficult times. The winds of change guided Faye to Malachi House, a transition that proved to be a beacon of hope. From the very beginning, Malachi House showed Faye that it was more than just a residence; it was a family. Faye expressed that the unique sense of unity and belonging at Malachi House became apparent from day one. It wasn’t just about finding a place to live; it was about discovering a community that embraced her with open arms. When asked about her experience at Malachi House, Faye spoke about the peace she had been yearning for throughout her life. The atmosphere of care and compassion has filled the void that grief had once carved, providing Faye with a haven where she can truly call home. In the tapestry of Faye’s life, Malachi House has woven a new chapter—a chapter of family, support, and the long-awaited peace that has become a reality. Faye’s journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of community and the indomitable human spirit, proving that even in the face of loss, one can find solace and joy in unexpected places.

A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As we look back on 2023, we express our heartfelt appreciation for the steadfast support that has allowed Malachi House to continue its mission of assisting individuals in need who are facing terminal illness. This year, we mourn the loss of a guiding force, our co-founder, Kaki O’Neill. Her vision, leadership, guidance, and empathy left an enduring imprint on Malachi House, and her legacy will serve as a lasting source of inspiration as we strive to uphold her dedication to offering solace and dignity to those in need. As we recognize this, we also acknowledge and appreciate those who support us daily - both outward-facing and behind the scenes: •

Quotes from Kaki’s children: My mom was a remarkable individual, one who was beyond compassionate, kind and brave. She shared with everyone the lessons she learned in life and her spiritual strength, wisdom, and steely determination were (and continue to be) examples to us all. The creative spirit she carried with her enabled her to find ways to accomplish her goals, never taking “no” for an answer especially when helping to develop Malachi House. Displaying a unparalleled zest for life plus her unique ability to leave a lasting impression on all those who were fortunate to meet her was quite extraordinary. Not only was she a passionate leader at home and in the community, she was guided by her faith, her love for her family and those less fortunate. —Patti Allen, Kaki’s Daughter I was asked to provide some wisdom shared by my Mom – the tenacious, grace-filled, “turn no into yes”, Kaki O’Neill. A daunting assignment – having been blessed with a lifetime of lessons from a life-long learner. Yet, without hesitation, 5 words came to mind: “Will It Benefit Malachi House?” I heard it often and cannot help but think that no simpler or wiser words have been spoken. I miss you Mom. —Erin Plasket, Kaki’s daughter Kaki was the real deal. Her faith and relationship with God was her foundation. Kaki’s foundation was strong and firm for all things just, right and good. Kaki’s curiosity and creativity, equally matched by her desire to accomplish anything that could or would help mankind was her driving force. A Final Resting Place
Our mission at Malachi House is to serve our residents who are terminally ill. We believe that mission doesn’t end with one’s final breath. We are pleased to announce the culmination of our longtime endeavor to procure a final resting place for our residents at Lake View Cemetery. Through Board Member, John Sullivan’s, vision and guidance we have made this possible at no additional cost to our residents. Malachi House residents may choose to be interred at the historic and beautiful Lake View Cemetery at the Malachi House Vault. Their cremated ashes will be held in Wade Chapel at the Cemetery until our annual Celebration of Life, at which time the ashes will be interred in our burial vault on lot 104. This option for interment will remove the emotional and financial burden for residents and/or their families and provides scenic grounds for their final resting place.

A Celebration of Life On October 7, 2023 we held our second annual Celebration of Life event at Lake View Cemetery. We honored the life of residents Norma Clark. Marcia Smith, Richard Freeman, and Chandra Kinkead. Many thanks to Fr. Elias Yazbeck from Saint Maron Church in Cleveland for his reflection and blessing. Following an intimate ceremony in Wade Chapel, we gathered at the Malachi House plot. We were joined by family members, Malachi House staff, volunteers, Board Members John Sullivan, Donna Skurzak and our Board Chair, John Schriner.

Our dedicated staff and caregivers at Malachi House are the heartbeat of our organization, faithfully living out our mission each day by providing comfort and care to our residents. Their steadfast dedication is the foundation of our organization, and we sincerely value the compassionate service they provide. Before Malachi House came to be, St. Therese was watching over it. In 1987, a friend of Rev. Fr. Paul Hritz unexpectedly donated a monetary gift to be used for helping the needy. The donor had no idea that Fr. Paul had just completed a Novena to St. Therese to help him proceed with his vision of helping the homeless who were terminally ill. At that time, there was no funding available for his idea - just faith in prayer to a special saint. However, that unexpected donation planted a seed for the formation of Malachi House. That same year, four row houses on Clinton Avenue were also donated to St. Malachi Parish. Work began immediately to renovate the homes, but Malachi House still needed parking to satisfy the zoning laws. After serious negotiations, Malachi House purchased the house behind the row homes to provide a parking area. The back yard, covered with snow on a cold February day, was about to be cleared for the parking lot. To unbelieving eyes, a rose bush was discovered with a single, beautiful blooming red rose. St. Therese, also known as “The Little Flower”, had left her sign of the rose, blessing our work to continue with her favor and our confidence. Story after story flowed from this occurrence, beginning with prayers almost always answered by the patron saint of Malachi House. A statue of St. Therese was placed in the home to oversee the renovation that was being accomplished by hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life. During that time, roses would appear in unexpected places at unexpected times as the work progressed. St. Therese’s wish was to carry out the mission of, “not great deeds but great love” to those most in need. Her wish was being fulfilled by the ongoing faith in God’s command to love one another, as told to believers by this great saint. ~ Lovingly remembered and recounted by Malachi House Co-founder, Catherine “Kaki” O’Neill

Every year since that first sign from St. Therese in 1987, Malachi House celebrates her Feast Day. In October of 2022, we were pleased to, once again, gather in person for this celebration. Malachi House was adorned with beautiful red roses and filled with the laughter and joy of our community. We look forward to many more celebrations of St. Therese to come. 17
