WELCOME BACK TO CAIN PARK!
This summer, Cleveland Heights is showcasing some of the best professional entertainment Northeast Ohio has to offer and we are excited for you to be a part of it!
In 1934, two Cleveland Heights theater groups wanted to put up an outdoor production of A MidSummer Night’s Dream, and not having a place to perform wasn’t going to get in their way. They created their own performance space at the foot of the sledding hill at Taylor and Superior Roads and dubbed it “Cain Park” after then-Mayor Frank Cain. The community rallied behind the idea, and four years later, the Cain Park Amphitheater opened to the public. The Alma Theater, named for Mayor Cain’s wife Alma, followed four years later. Cain Park has been a living monument to Cleveland Heights’ commitment to the arts ever since.
This year we celebrate the 45th anniversary of our legendary Arts Festival. A community gathering that began with nearly 50 artists, today has grown both in size and prestige, becoming one of the region’s most respected juried art shows.
We have many events for neighbors of all ages to enjoy. Come to Cleveland Heights and Cain Park. Make a day – or a night – of it!
I promise you won’t be disappointed!

JUNE 8 – JULY 11 | Alma Courtyard
Opening Reception: JUNE 8 • 6:00 PM-8:00 PM
They’re Back…
Various Artists
Curator: Michelle Barnicky Stachnik
After a two-year hiatus, The Feinberg Gallery is proud to reinitiate this exhibit tradition. This show will feature a select group of students from the Cleveland Institute of Art exhibiting their most current and thought-provoking work. These students have been producing their work in isolation for a better part of the last two years. They’re Back… looks to examine the works produced by artists that are transitioning back to creating and working alongside other artists; receiving feedback in real time, allowing them to adjust and discuss their process and enriching everyone’s experience. There are many connections that emerge from sharing input, space, and viewing the creative process from concept to finished piece over extensive periods of time. A process that results in a richness of work which this exhibit will highlight.
Rituals
Various Artists
Curators: Michelle Barnicky Stachnik and Cass Penegor
The production of art throughout human history is a ritual. Each time an artist starts a creation they are participating in their own private ritual from mixing their paint, to laying out their tools, and even the washing of their brushes. These rituals can be just as important as the actual production of work; they help with the thought process, creative flow, execution, and the ability to complete a work. Over the last two years, the artists participating in this invitational have had to hone in on many of their rituals along with taking on new ones and letting go of others due to the pandemic. The works featured in this exhibit will examine and celebrate the rituals of these artists.

CAIN PARK HISTORY
The birth of Cain Park begins with Heights High School drama teacher Dr. Dina Rees Evans and Cleveland Heights Mayor Frank C. Cain. In 1930, Evans had come to Cleveland Heights to research a theory for her Ph.D. – that theater education helped make “dramatic” transformations in students’ attitudes and social behaviors as well as helped them succeed in other areas. After earning her doctorate, Evans went on to stage an outdoor presentation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the foot of the sledding hill at Taylor and Superior Roads in the summer of 1934. Needing a name for the performance location, Evans hastily dubbed it “Cain Park” after Mayor Frank Cain, who raised no objection. The success of the production led to the building and development of the Amphitheater, which was completed in 1938, with the Alma Theater added in 1944.
During its early years, Cain Park was home to both aspiring and big-name talent. As the theatrical director, Evans stressed the theater’s role as a teaching institution in the community. Under Evan’s guidance, Cain Park attracted talent such as Broadway music director Jack Lee, producer Ross Hunter, and actors Hal Holbrook, Dom DeLuise, Carol Kane, Jack Weston, and Pernell Roberts who performed on sets designed by nationally acclaimed industrial artist Viktor Schreckengost, among others. After Evans departure in 1950, Marvin Kline took over the theater and bought in national stars such as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Jerry Lewis, and Sammy Davis Jr.
Cain Park soon began to diversify in ways that established its reputation as a unique alternative on the cultural arts scene. In 1978, the Amphitheater was scouted by Cain Park alumnus David Shaber for the location of his movie, Those Lips, Those Eyes, which resulted in $100,000 being invested in the Amphitheater for renovations by the film’s production company. These improvements and renewed public interest in the facility allowed the City to begin staging musical productions there and open it up for concerts and dancing. In 1987, the City of Cleveland Heights received the Governor’s Award for the Arts “in recognition of the City’s support for the arts through Cain Park programs over the last 49 years”.
Today, Cain Park’s original purpose remains unaltered – to act as the living symbol of the City’s commitment to nurturing quality programming in the arts for an area that thrives on it. At Cain Park’s dedication in 1938, Mayor Frank Cain counseled: “Treat it well, keep it on a high plane, and above all, support and enjoy it.” His successors continue to heed his advice.

Completely engaged. That’s how Joe Coyle feels about his life at Judson Manor.
“Expanding my
is what it’s all about.”
An award-winning journalist who has lived in Paris, Santa Fe, and New York City, he arrived in July 2020 via the suggestion of a fellow resident. He’s been delighted ever since.
“As a writer, I enjoy spending time alone, and these surroundings are perfect: my apartment is quiet, and the views overlooking the Cleveland Museum of Art are lovely. But by far the best part of Judson is the people. Everyone is so knowledgeable about art and culture. I wanted to have stimulating company to spend my time with, and I’ve found that here. These are wonderful, interesting people,” says Joe.
