Welcome to the 2024 Summer Season at Cleveland Heights’ Cain Park!

Decades ago, Cleveland Heights made a choice to place the arts at the center of our community life. Cain Park is a living, evolving monument to that choice. And for the last 85 years, Cain Park has filled our summers with theater, music, and dance.

This summer, we’ve broadened our offerings at the Evans Amphitheater to more genres and expanded our theater season from two to five shows, including the return of the Cain Park Youth Theater. In June, Cain Park will host the Second Annual Pride in the Park, and in July, hundreds of artists and thousands of people will descend on Cain Park for the 47th Annual Cain Park Arts Festival.

Including the shows at Arts Fest, Cain Park will offer 25 opportunities to enjoy music and dance for FREE this summer. And the Feinberg Art Gallery will open an hour before any show at the Evans or Alma.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Cain Park and Cleveland Heights, and we hope you’ll come back and join us again.

Enjoy the show!

This free, three-day juried arts festival showcases artists whose mediums include wood, clay, glass, painting, jewelry, photography, sculpture, and more. Attendees can also enjoy live entertainment, an interactive mural painting for children of all ages, and a variety of food trucks and concessions.

The 2024 Cain Park Arts Festival is in part curated by Northeast Ohio award-winning artist, George Kozmon. His work is represented in prestigious public and private collections including the Cleveland Museum of Art, (Cleveland, OH), the Akron Art Museum (Akron, OH), Hyatt Regency (Cologne, Germany), IBM (Armonk, NY), the Butler Institute of American Art (Youngstown, OH), Astor Residence Hotel (London, England), and the Progressive Collection, (Cleveland, OH).

CAIN PARK HISTORY

The birth of Cain Park begins with Heights High School drama teacher Dr. Dina Rees Evans and Cleveland Heights Mayor Frank C. Cain. In 1930, Evans had come to Cleveland Heights to research a theory for her Ph.D. – that theater education helped make “dramatic” transformations in students’ attitudes and social behaviors as well as helped them succeed in other areas. After earning her doctorate, Evans went on to stage an outdoor presentation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the foot of the sledding hill at Taylor and Superior Roads in the summer of 1934. Needing a name for the performance location, Evans hastily dubbed it “Cain Park” after Mayor Frank Cain, who raised no objection. The success of the production led to the building and development of the Amphitheater, which was completed in 1938, with the Alma Theater added in 1944.

During its early years, Cain Park was home to both aspiring and big-name talent. As the theatrical director, Evans stressed the theater’s role as a teaching institution in the community. Under Evan’s guidance, Cain Park attracted talent such as Broadway music director Jack Lee, producer Ross Hunter, and actors Hal Holbrook, Dom DeLuise, Carol Kane, Jack Weston, and Pernell Roberts who performed on sets designed by nationally acclaimed industrial artist Viktor Schreckengost, among others. After Evans departure in 1950, Marvin Kline took over the theater and bought in national stars such as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte, Johnny Mathis, Jerry Lewis, and Sammy Davis Jr.

Cain Park soon began to diversify in ways that established its reputation as a unique alternative on the cultural arts scene. In 1978, the Amphitheater was scouted by Cain Park alumnus David Shaber for the location of his movie, Those Lips, Those Eyes, which resulted in $100,000 being invested in the Amphitheater for renovations by the film’s production company. These improvements and renewed public interest in the facility allowed the City to begin staging musical productions there and open it up for concerts and dancing. In 1987, the City of Cleveland Heights received the Governor’s Award for the Arts “in recognition of the City’s support for the arts through Cain Park programs over the last 49 years”.

Today, Cain Park’s original purpose remains unaltered – to act as the living symbol of the City’s commitment to nurturing quality programming in the arts for an area that thrives on it. At Cain Park’s dedication in 1938, Mayor Frank Cain counseled: “Treat it well, keep it on a high plane, and above all, support and enjoy it.” His successors continue to heed his advice.
