THE MUSICAL THEATER PROJECT THE MUSICAL THEATER PROJECT (Co-Producer) was formed in 2000 to foster a deep appreciation of the American musical—and the social and cultural history surrounding it— by creating programs that educate as well as entertain people of all ages. Through its concert and cabaret series, The Song Is You!, and its school program, Kids Love Musicals!, TMTP serves 10,000 Northeast Ohioans each year. The organization also reaches more than 100,000 listeners annually through the WCLV radio program Footlight Parade, and thousands more through the program’s national distribution on public radio stations and Sirius XM Satellite Radio. For more information, visit MusicalTheaterProject.org. Bill Rudman (Co-Host, Writer), the founder and artistic director of The Musical Theater Project, is a nationally recognized authority on the American musical. His radio program Footlight Parade is heard locally on WCLV 104.9 and coast-to-coast on 100 public stations and Sirius XM Satellite Radio (under the title On the Aisle). Bill has created more than 70 concerts and cabarets for TMTP’s The Song Is You! series and has produced recordings of classic American theater and film songs featuring such vocalists as Peggy Lee and Maxine Sullivan (including Sullivan’s Grammy-nominated album of Cotton Club songs). Recent speaking engagements include New York’s Paley Center for Media and the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival. In 2000 Bill became the first recipient of the Robert P. Bergman Award for his work in arts education and community outreach. The Joe Hunter Trio has been a featured attraction of TMTP’s The Song Is You! series since it began in 2002. Joe has played piano professionally since 1979, and his versatility has garnered him work with an array of artists. In 1981 he studied in Rio de Janeiro at the Universidade Gama Filho, which fueled his passion for Brazilian music. From 1992-97 he served on the Conservatory of

Music faculty at Capitol University in Columbus. Joe has performed with many national artists including Conti Condoli, Tito Puente, Scott Hamilton and Cleveland’s Ernie Krivda. He serves on the faculty of Tri-C’s Jazz Studies Program. Bryan Thomas (Bass) can be heard in many diverse musical settings including symphony orchestras, salsa and swing dance bands. He works in multimedia projects that incorporate poetry, theater and visual arts. He also plays blues, bluegrass, African music and American “old time.” Ray Porrello (Drums) is a Louis Bellson protégé and a veteran of the Count Basie Orchestra, and was a featured member of Sammy Davis Jr.’s personal rhythm section. Ray spent several years honing his skills in Las Vegas clubs and hotels. He currently holds the drum chair at Tri-C’s Jazz Studies Program. Vince Mastro (Vocalist) has had a career in jazz and popular music spanning more than 50 years. A native of Cleveland, he won a Decca Records contract that took him to New York City in the 1950s, studying harmony and theory at the Juilliard School and playing clubs such as Gilly’s, the Copa and the Metropol. It was a particularly exciting time to be in Manhattan, and Vince’s friends included Lenny Bruce, Pat Cooper and Theresa Brewer (with whom he performed). For Decca he recorded “Crazy River” and “Forever Is Always” among other songs; his best-seller was “Searching for Someone to Love” on the Roulette label. Today he continues to sing, play the keyboard and record, and he has been a frequent performer on TMTP’s The Song Is You! series since 2003. Treva Offutt (Vocalist) is a singer-songwriter, actress, dancer, director and visual artist. She has had the honor of working with many dynamic dance/theater/ music ensembles including the Urban Bush Women, Remote Control Productions, Adishakti, Roger Guenveur Smith’s Iceland, Fred Ho’s Big Red Media, Jamaican music ensemble, Ancient Vibrations, African Pop group Afro-Blue, South African ensembles— Shyingoma, Osha and Lucky Ngema and Friends, Mexican vocal project Choro

Tajin, Phillip Hamilton, the David Murray Big Band, Sabir Mateen and Jeff Shurdett, Hammiett Blueit, Craig Harris, Dan Zanes, her own ensembles Hearsay, duo with guitarist Barry Salmon, and Lulutoy with Andy Ezrin and Jean Baptiste Boclé. Treva is thrilled to work with TMTP, CJO, The Joe Hunter Trio and Vince again! Heather Meeker (Co-director, The Musical Theater Project) shares the leadership of TMTP with colleague Bill Rudman. For nearly 20 years she directed public relations and fundraising efforts at arts, education and cultural nonprofits including the National Inventors Hall of Fame, Hiram College, Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio and the Repertory Project (now VERB Ballets). Heather directs TMTP’s student education programming, including Kids Love Musicals!, which serves more than 20,000 students and 200 teachers each year. She is a graduate of Hiram College, earned her MFA in theater at Virginia Tech, and serves on the adjunct faculty at Hiram’s Professional and Graduate Studies Program.

CJO and its many Educational Activities CJO views its educational responsibility seriously, and presents a variety of programs to nurture the region’s neophyte jazz musicians and listeners. Our projects include: The Jazz Discovery Series—CJO band member Chris Anderson, (an employee in the Cleveland Public Schools) runs our “Jazz Discovery” series. In collaboration with Playhouse Square, CJO presents free community concerts in the US Bank Plaza downtown. These concerts focus on jazz and other genres, such as Jazz and Poetry, Jazz and Rap, Jazz and Dance. Chris also programmed and performed similar concerts at Trinity Cathedral’s Brown Bag Lunch Series and in several elementary schools. The Side by Side Concerts—Another important initiative has involved CJO going directly into the region’s schools to model, teach and perform with Northeast Ohio’s neophyte jazz musicians. These typically involve members of CJO working with high school students in advance of their shared concert date. On the concert date, CJO will sit next to the sponsor high school ensemble and play, sight read and offer help to the group at large and each individual involved. The evening concert then features the sponsor high school group and CJO performing both together and separately. Recently, these “Side by Side” events have taken place at Solon High School, The Hawken School, Brecksville/Broadview High School, Hudson High School and Cuyahoga Falls High School. After this experience for these students, a free ticket to an upcoming CJO concert was offered (with a discounted ticket offered to family and friends). Summer Jazz Camp—Last summer, CJO began a plan to host a Summer High School Jazz Camp, and is discussing a partnership this coming summer with the Roberto Ocasio Foundation’s Summer Latin Jazz Camp held at Baldwin Wallace University. Pilot Rehearsal Program—CJO did a pilot event at Orange High School prior to our “Love Supreme” concert in which Orange students attended our first rehearsal for that show. CJO is working to expand that program to include other schools in the coming years. Student Ticket Pricing—For all of our ticketed events at Playhouse Square and at BLU Jazz+ in Akron, a discounted student ticket is offered for students of all ages at the cost of $10.

If you want to change

YOUR COMMUNITY, be that change.

Isabel Trautwein, Cleveland Orchestra First Violinist, Program Director, Dreamer & Doer, Local Hero. Longing to share the experience of making music with children who had never been to Severance Hall, Isabel launched a strings program at the Rainey Institute in the Hough neighborhood. Now there’s a waiting list to learn how to play classical music. You, too, can play a part in creating lasting change within the Cleveland community by making a donation to the Cleveland Foundation — dedicated to enhancing the lives of all Clevelanders now and for generations to come.

Support your passions. Give through the Cleveland Foundation. Please call our Advancement Team at 1.877.554.5054 ClevelandFoundation.org
