2018|2019 SEASON

Bern, Bern, Bern! May 17 & 18, 2019

Dear CJO Supporters, As we approach the close of season 34 and look ahead to season 35, we hope that you have enjoyed wonderful music, had fun, and have made some new friends along the way! The past few years have seen some remarkable successes for the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. With thanks to our many devoted supporters, our recent fundraising benefits have had record attendance and returns, which has enabled us to expand our Educational Outreach and our musical footprint throughout the region. Additionally, the CJO has been able to partner with a number of other non-profits in our region to better serve Northeast Ohio in a variety of ways. A great deal of our recent success can be traced to the appointment of Kenny Koblitz as Executive Director in June of 2016. We are grateful for the vision and energy he brought to the organization. Kenny announced his retirement from this position as of March 31, 2019. The CJO artists and Board of Directors are most grateful that Kenny will remain in the CJO family as Executive Director Emeritus. You will be certain to see him and his wife Audrey in the lobby continuing to greet our crowds and being our biggest fans. We will be honoring Kenny and Audrey at the CJO’s Annual Benefit to be held at Hawken School, Gates Mills Campus, on September 28th. I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Scott Garlock as the new Executive Director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Dr. Garlock is Professor of Music at Ashland University, where he is recognized for his long time commitment to jazz education and where he has influenced many jazz musicians and music educators. In addition to being a 20-year member of the CJO (currently on lead trombone), Scott has already served the CJO in a variety of management capacities. He has served in the role of Booking Agent and then in an expanded role encompassing Marketing and Social Media. For the last two years, Scott has been the CJO’s Managing Director, where he was additionally responsible for grant writing, fundraising and concert production. We look forward to Scott’s leadership in Season 35! Please join us on June 21, 2019 for our 35th Season Announcement Event at Nighttown, Cleveland Heights. Time to celebrate!

CJO Musicians

Bernie Dresel Bernie Dresel has been one of the busiest studio and live musicians in the world as both a drummer and percussionist since moving to Los Angeles in 1983 after graduating from the prestigious Eastman School of Music. He has traveled the world, occupying the coveted drum chair for Grammy Award®-winning Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band since its inception in 1999. And also, for an overlapping 15 years (1992 to 2006), he was the drummer for the multiGrammy Award-winning Brian Setzer Orchestra, selling close to 4 million records. Modern Drummer magazine’s readers’ poll named Bernie “Best Big Band Drummer” and DRUM! magazine has put him on their list of “53 Drummers Who Made a Difference in the ’90s” as well as honoring him with a Drummie® for Best Big Band Drummer. Bernie Dresel’s jazz orchestra, The BBB, is without question one of Los Angeles’, if not the planet’s, most exciting large jazz ensembles. It is one of the most innovative and original hard-swinging large jazz ensembles ever. The BBB provides potent testimony to the sheer exhilaration of big band jazz...a combination of intense swing and fiery soloing, as well as tight ensemble playing, powered by Bernie Dresel’s extraordinary drumming talents. Established in 2014, with a live performance tribute to Buddy Rich, The BBB plays monthly at jazz clubs in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Prior to forming his own jazz orchestra, Bernie backed Maynard Ferguson, the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band. Bernie served 15 years for both Setzer and Goodwin. He has been the drummer on numerous Brian Setzer Grammy Award®-winning recordings and more recently on every recording that Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band has released, including the Grammy Award®-winners.

Musical Chairs Over 20 years, I’ve had the distinct pleasure to sit in a number of unique chairs for the CJO. I’ve played every trombone chair in the band multiple times, and have enjoyed learning and listening to the brilliant energy and creations of my cohorts. The last few years I’ve had the chance to sit in some other chairs with the CJO—first as our booking agent, then doing Marketing and Social Media, and then for the last two years, I’ve served as the CJO’s Managing Director. With the retirement of Kenny Koblitz on April 1st, I’ve been entrusted to be CJO’s Executive Director. I am beyond grateful and excited for the chance to further the CJO. With Paul, the Band and our Board of Directors I will do all I can to see the CJO prosper in our ongoing efforts to bring the finest in jazz education and entertainment to the Northeast Ohio region. This chair I newly occupy means that I will be looking for new ways for the CJO to be less of a well-kept secret and celebrated for the world class band that it is. I’ll also be looking for both your help and input to make us better—email me your thoughts at booking@clevelandjazz.org. The CJO has existed for 34 years because of the support of the people sitting in the chairs in our audiences—we so appreciate your attendance and your help, and look forward to your help in advancing the CJO’s mission of providing the best in big band jazz on the concert stage and in our region’s schools. So much of what the CJO is now and will be is owed to Kenny and Audrey Koblitz. Via Kenny’s energy, ideas and steady hand, the CJO finds itself poised to grow in what we offer our communities and schools as we start our 35th season. I do hope you all make plans to help us honor Kenny and Audrey at CJO’s Annual Benefit on September 25th at Hawken School. For more information, as always, go to clevelandjazz.org. Scott

Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Diversity Statement “Jazz is a distinct music that depends and thrives on individuality, and yet the individual is not oblivious to others, nor is he immune to their feelings… A session in jazz is comparable to an open forum where theories and opinions are discussed openly and freely.” Stan Kenton Cleveland Jazz Orchestra is an organization of and for people who love jazz. We celebrate the diverse origins of jazz, and its heritage of valuing its player and composer based not on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation or identity, education or disability, but on whether he (or she) has chops. Furthering our mission to enrich the cultural and intellectual fabric of the communities we serve through jazz, we respect, value and draw upon the diverse experiences and perspectives of our Board, staff, musicians and audiences to preserve and promote jazz in greater Cleveland for generations to come.

As such, CJO is committed to modeling diversity and inclusion in the arts, and to fostering and maintaining an inclusive environment with equitable treatment for all. We strive to: ■  Recognize diversity, inclusion, and equity as connected to our mission and critical to ensuring the well-being of our staff, Board Members and performers and the communities we serve. ■  Commit time and resources to expand more diverse leadership within our Board, staff, committees, and advisory bodies. ■  Acknowledge and dismantle any inequities within our policies and programs. ■  Explore potential underlying, unquestioned assumptions that interfere with inclusiveness. ■  Advocate for and support Board-level thinking about how systemic inequities influence our organization’s work, and how best to address that in a way that promotes our mission. ■  Challenge assumptions about what it takes to be a strong leader at our organization, and who is well-positioned to provide leadership. ■  Practice and encourage transparent communication in all interactions. ■ Lead with respect and tolerance.

Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Disability Accommodation Statement The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra makes every effort to accommodate the needs of individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities for all its programs. While our performances take place at dozens of different venues, we strive to perform at those that are fully accessible to our audience, artists with disabilities and our own staff. Our current primary performance location at Playhouse Square strives to offer barrier-free access to all performances. This includes accommodations for wheelchair access and seating, services for those with limited sight and hearing, as well as accommodations for service animals. Upon request, and with 2 weeks notice, specific accommodations will be made subject to our available resources.

It’s time for a new identity. One that tells the story of creativity in Ohio and illustrates it.

Expression is an essential need. By better illustrating our story, we can better help you express yours.

CLEVELAND JAZZ ORCHESTRA

CJO and its many Educational Activities The CJO is serious about jazz education. Our projects include: The Side by Side Concerts CJO goes directly into the region’s schools to model, teach, and perform with Northeast Ohio’s neophyte jazz musicians. These programs typically involve CJO members working with high school students in advance of their shared concert date.

Lauren Angie

Jill Strauss

Our team is fourth generation in the industry

On the concert date, CJO sits next to the sponsor high school ensemble and plays, sight-reads, and provides help to individuals and to the entire group. The evening concert then features the sponsor high school group and CJO performing both together and separately. Recently, these Side by Side events have taken place at Solon High School and Cuyahoga Falls High School. Following this experience, CJO offers each student a free ticket to an upcoming CJO concert (and discounted tickets to family and friends).

Mike Giarrizzo Sr.

CJO Rehearsals in Schools Last season, the CJO began to do rehearsals at various high schools in the Northeast Ohio region. Students at these schools were offered free tickets to the concert that the CJO was rehearsing, and also had the chance to watch up close as the CJO sight-read, discussed and mastered new material. If you have interest in having the CJO do a rehearsal at your school, please contact George Shernit at: sailsguy@aol.com CJO Field Trips and Student Tickets At certain CJO Season Series Concerts, school jazz programs and their directors can get in free! On these shows, there will be a Pre-Concert talk with current CJO members before each of these shows describing the concert and the path taken to becoming a successful jazz musician. Additionally, discounted student tickets ($10) are offered to high school and college students for all ticketed CJO Season Series shows. Please present a student ID at will call when picking up tickets.

If you want to change

YOUR COMMUNITY, be that change.

Isabel Trautwein, Cleveland Orchestra First Violinist, Program Director, Dreamer & Doer, Local Hero. Longing to share the experience of making music with children who had never been to Severance Hall, Isabel launched a strings program at the Rainey Institute in the Hough neighborhood. Now there’s a waiting list to learn how to play classical music. You, too, can play a part in creating lasting change within the Cleveland community by making a donation to the Cleveland Foundation — dedicated to enhancing the lives of all Clevelanders now and for generations to come.

Support your passions. Give through the Cleveland Foundation. Please call our Advancement Team at 1.877.554.5054 ClevelandFoundation.org
