CLEVELAND JAZZ ORCHESTRA has been Northeast Ohio’s premier jazz voice for 35 years, with the mission of enriching the cultural and intellectual fabric of the community with a uniquely American art form. CJO promotes jazz in both its historical and contemporary forms through concerts with gifted jazz musicians, arrangers, composers and educators in Northeast Ohio. CJO aims for worldwide recognition in cooperation with guest artists, and looks to shepherd young musicians toward the future of jazz. Our 35th year features the launch of a “Women in Jazz” series with the incomparable Regina Carter, an extended residency in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, live recordings, our 6th collaboration with The Musical Theater Project, new themes and new locations. For more information, visit clevelandjazz.org.
THE MUSICAL THEATER PROJECT was formed in 2000 to foster a deep appreciation of the classic American musical—and the social and cultural history surrounding it— by creating programs that educate as well as entertain people of all ages. Through its concert and cabaret series, The Song Is You!, and its school program, Kids Love Musicals!, TMTP serves 30,000 Northeast Ohioans each year. The organization also reaches more than 100,000 listeners annually through the WCLV radio program Footlight Parade, and thousands more through the program’s national distribution on public radio stations and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. For more information, visit MusicalTheaterProject. org or call 216-860-1518.
Paul Ferguson (Co-host, Arranger, Trombone), artistic director of Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, has performed with and arranged music for CJO since 1988. A graduate of Eastman School of Music, Paul has toured extensively with the Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey orchestras. Along the way, he has also performed with The Cleveland Orchestra and Apollo’s Fire, and has backed up many performers including Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, Andy Williams, Mel Tormé and others too numerous to mention. Paul was the winner of the Gil Evans Fellowship in Jazz Composition in 1995 and was the sole American invited to the ART-EZ jazz composition contest in Enschede, Holland, in 2012. He has recorded eight CDs of his work including “Big Band Christmas,” “Rays of Light” and “Encounter.” Paul has been an instructor of jazz studies at CWRU since 1988. 4

Bill Rudman, the founder and artistic director of The Musical Theater Project, is a nationally recognized authority on the American musical. His radio program Footlight Parade is heard locally on WCLV 104.9 and coast-to-coast on 100 public radio stations and SiriusXM Satellite Radio (under the title On the Aisle). Bill has created more than 100 concerts and cabarets for TMTP’s The Song Is You! and Rendezvous series and has produced recordings of classic American theater and film songs featuring such vocalists as Peggy Lee and Maxine Sullivan (including Sullivan’s Grammynominated album of Cotton Club songs). In 2000 Bill became the first recipient of the Robert P. Bergman Award for his work in arts education and community outreach.
QUESTION: WHAT KIND OF CONCERT IS THIS? Answer: Unique. If this is your first experience with a partnership between Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and The Musical Theater Project, we want to tell what you’re in for. We’re going to present a number of great songs by Irving Berlin going back more than 100 years—but we’re going to do a lot more than that. In each of our concerts, which feature terrific professional vocalists, we tell a kind of “story” (in this case, Irving Berlin’s) that we hope will help you enjoy the songs even more. We tell that story through the spoken word delivered by the two of us and the singers—and with video clips, audio clips, more than 100 still images and very attractive lighting. It takes about four months to put one of these shows together, but our goal is to make it look so easy that you’ll truly relax with us. We can’t think of anybody else in America who does exactly what we do. We’re proud of that. But one thing about “uniqueness”—you can’t be all things to all people. We’ve built an extraordinarily loyal audience for our collaborations, and we hope that if you’re a firsttimer, you’ll come back. If we’re not your cup of tea, that’s OK, too. The important thing is that we are all joined together right now to share (as Rodgers & Hammerstein put it) “Something Wonderful.” Can you think of a better way to spend two hours? – Bill Rudman and Paul Ferguson

THE MUSICAL THEATER PROJECT Vince Mastro (Vocalist) has had a career in popular music spanning more than 50 years. A native of Cleveland, he won a Decca Records contract that took him to New York City in the 1950s, studying harmony and theory at the Juilliard School and playing clubs such as Gilly’s, the Copa and the Metropol. It was a particularly exciting time to be in Manhattan, and Vince’s friends included Lenny Bruce, Pat Cooper and Theresa Brewer (with whom he performed). For Decca, he recorded “Crazy River” and “Forever Is Always,” among other songs; his best-seller was “Searching for Someone to Love” on the Roulette label. Today he continues to sing, play the keyboard and record. Last season, in another TMTP/CJO partnership concert, he sang the words and music of Cole Porter. Treva Offutt (Vocalist) is a visual and performing artist and toured with many ensembles including New York City’s Urban Bush Women, Belgium’s Remote Control Productions, Ireland’s Daghdha Dance Company and India’s Adishakti Theater Company. Recent productions include This at Dobama, Aida (choreographer), Rasheeda Speaking and Passing Strange with Karamu, Cole Porter on Broadway with The Musical Theater Project and CJO, as well as a special joint production between Karamu and TMTP: The Impact of “Shuffle Along.” Treva is a proud graduate of RISD, a member of SAG/ AFTRA, and in her 11th year of directing at Heights Youth Theater and teaching Performing Arts at Laurel School. To quote Mr. Berlin: “There’s no business like show business!”

Michael Shirtz (Vocalist), who is making his debut with TMTP and CJO, is a performer, producer, composer, conductor and educator. Michael is highly regarded for his versatility with jazz, contemporary and musical theater repertoire. Known for his scat singing and cool ease with his audiences, he has worked with such artists as Melissa Manchester, Elizabeth Von Trapp and Ellen Winters. After a decade’s break from performing, he returned to the stage in 2014 with four shows: “As I’ve Learned It: The Jazz Legends,” “America: Our Way,” “An American Songbook Story” (2015) and his faith-based concert, “In Finding Faith” (2017). In 2018 Michael released his album and show “Blue Skies” featuring the story of his music and return to the stage. Currently he works with Maureen McGovern as music director/performer and serves as senior vice president of entertainment and programming at Lakeside Chautauqua, conductor of the Firelands Symphony Chorale and producer of the Jazz@8 Series, and is associated with the Jazz Education Network. The Joe Hunter Trio has been a featured attraction of TMTP’s The Song Is You! series since it began in 2002. Joe has played piano professionally since 1979, and his versatility has garnered him work with an array of artists. In 1981 he studied in Rio de Janeiro at the Universidade Gama Filho, which fueled his passion for Brazilian music. From 1992–97 he served on the Conservatory of Music faculty at Capitol University in Columbus. Joe has performed with many national artists including Conti Condoli, Tito Puente, Scott Hamilton and Cleveland’s Ernie Krivda.

CLEVELAND JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Diversity Statement “Jazz is a distinct music that depends and thrives on individuality, and yet the individual is not oblivious to others, nor is he immune to their feelings… A session in jazz is comparable to an open forum where theories and opinions are discussed openly and freely.” Stan Kenton Cleveland Jazz Orchestra is an organization of and for people who love jazz. We celebrate the diverse origins of jazz, and its heritage of valuing its player and composer based not on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation or identity, education or disability, but on whether he (or she) has chops. Furthering our mission to enrich the cultural and intellectual fabric of the communities we serve through jazz, we respect, value and draw upon the diverse experiences and perspectives of our Board, staff, musicians and audiences to preserve and promote jazz in greater Cleveland for generations to come. As such, CJO is committed to modeling diversity and inclusion in the arts, and to fostering and maintaining an inclusive environment with equitable treatment for all. We strive to: ■ Recognize diversity, inclusion, and equity as connected to our mission and critical to ensuring the well-being of our staff, Board Members and performers and the communities we serve. ■ Commit time and resources to expand more diverse leadership within our Board, staff, committees, and advisory bodies.
■ Advocate for and support Board-level thinking about how systemic inequities influence our organization’s work, and how best to address that in a way that promotes our mission. ■ Challenge assumptions about what it takes to be a strong leader at our organization, and who is well-positioned to provide leadership. ■ Practice and encourage transparent communication in all interactions. ■ Lead with respect and tolerance. Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Disability Accommodation Statement The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra makes every effort to accommodate the needs of individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities for all its programs. While our performances take place at dozens of different venues, we strive to perform at those that are fully accessible to our audience, artists with disabilities and our own staff. Our current primary performance location at Playhouse Square strives to offer barrier-free access to all performances. This includes accommodations for wheelchair access and seating, services for those with limited sight and hearing, as well as accommodations for service animals. Upon request, and with 2 weeks notice, specific accommodations will be made subject to our available resources.
■ Acknowledge and dismantle any inequities within our policies and programs. ■ Explore potential underlying, unquestioned assumptions that interfere with inclusiveness.

CJO Educational Activities The CJO is helping to create the next generation of jazz performers and listeners through our educational programs: CJO Masterclasses The CJO will help you bring one of our musicians to your school to work with your students for one or more classes, customized to suit your needs. Side by Side Concerts CJO members work with students and prepare for a shared concert, featuring the sponsor school, as well as the CJO, performing both together and separately. CJO brings our rehearsals to your school CJO will rehearse at high schools in the Northeast Ohio region, giving students the opportunity to watch up close as the CJO sight-reads, discusses & masters new material for upcoming performances.
School Residencies Due to a grant from the Gund Foundation, the CJO will be doing a residency with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District this year. From Mid-October through early December, CJO musicians will be working at Ben Franklin Middle School. Free Student Tickets! Students and their band directors can attend a CJO concert for free in a “field trip” experience. CJO bank members meet with the students and directors prior to the show. Over 400 students took advantage of this experience last year. Clinics, Guest Artists and Adjudication Every year, the CJO helps fund performances and workshops by CJO musicians.
