Vanessa Rubin Revered as both a torchbearer and a storyteller, jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin possesses a voice hailed for crystalline clarity, hearth-like warmth and playful lioness sass. The Cleveland native brings a wealth of diverse influences to her vocal performance from both the Trinidadian/Caribbean roots of her mother and traditional jazz by way of her Louisiana-born father. Additional homespun influences include the melodic bell tone clarity of a young Capital Records recording artist, Nancy Wilson, the fire of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, the sweet sounds of trumpeter Blue Mitchell as well as her love of the Motown Sound…especially girl groups like the Supremes. Rubin’s passion for rich musical stories are evidenced throughout her eight albums thus far plus numerous guest appearances. Highlights include the evocative “Voyager II” from the pen of Teri Thornton, “Inside a Silent Tear” written by Blossom Dearie, a refashioned waltz version of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” lyricized by New York Voices and an arrangement of “Superwoman” by Stevie Wonder insipired by the Ahmad Jamal recording of “Poinciana.” So while she has one foot planted in tradition— sticking close to timeless melodies and exquisite vocal forms—Rubin waxes adventurous, embracing stories lesser told while employing lessons of acclaimed storytellers in song such as Carmen McRae, Shirley Horn and Freddy Cole. “They mastered the art of believability,” Rubin asserts. Additionally, Rubin continues to back her way into The Blues with an urgent appreciation for soulful mentors like Etta Jones and Irene Reid.
Musical Chairs From 1986-1990 and 2003 to now, I’ve had the distinct pleasure to sit in a number of remarkable chairs in the CJO. While I’ve played every trombone chair in the band multiple times, for years I sat next to and studied Paul Ferguson when he was our lead trombone player. At the same time, I had the absolute best place to sit for a CJO concert—next to Jim Rupp! I’ve gotten to hear Jack Schantz’s unbelievable long flugal lines in my left ear, and been made nearly deaf in my right ear from the searing lead trumpets of Dave, Joe and Scott. I’ve had a front row seat to the relentless energy of Howie Smith and our great saxophone section that can play anything and do so on all the woodwind doubles that often fells a lesser group of players. For the past few years, I’ve gotten to sit as the leader of the trombone section, and have enjoyed hearing Chris’ brilliant solos, Mark’s energy, and the always steady presence of Paul Hungerford. The last few years I’ve had the chance to sit in some other chairs with the CJO—first as our booking agent, and more recently in Marketing and Social Media. As of this season, I’ve been given the opportunity to serve the group as our Managing Director. After 20+ years of involvement with the CJO, I am so grateful for the chance to further the CJO and to work with Kenny, Paul and our Board of Directors. This chair I now occupy means that I will be looking for new ways for the CJO to be less of a well-kept secret and celebrated for the world class band that it is. I’ll also be looking for both your help and input to make us better. The CJO has existed for 33 years because of the support of the people sitting in the chairs in our audiences—we so appreciate your attendance, your help, and look forward to asking you to help us enrich the CJO’s mission of providing the best in big band jazz on the concert stage and in our region’s schools. CLEVELAND JAZZ ORCHESTRA
One hundred years ago, the United States entered World War One, the Cleveland Orchestra was founded, the first jazz recordings were made, and a slew of important jazz musicians were born—Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, Thelonious Monk and Cleveland’s own Tadd Dameron. Although united by generation, the musicians we honor tonight represent the diversity we expect in jazz. In bebop alone we have the spectacular (Gillespie), the abstract (Monk) and the poet (Dameron). I’ve dreamed of bringing the CJO to CMA for many years and tonight it becomes a reality, at the same time as the museum’s “Jazz Age” exhibit. I’m honored and humbled to present a new composition inspired by Victor Schreckengost’s “Jazz Bowl,” a signature piece of the exhibit. Attempting to describe how my reaction to the Schreckengost piece is manifested in sounds is one tricky business. Suffice to say I feel him to be a kindred spirit, attempting to embrace a variety of influences and create a piece of professional work. We’ve been all over Northeast Ohio over the last two years and we have a new CD “Live in Believeland,” capturing us at Playhouse Square, The Bop Stop, The Music Box and the Tommy LiPuma recording studio. Enjoy a “homegrown” collection of music by Howie Smith, Brad Wagner, Chas Baker and myself. Guest Joe Lovano adds a special touch on John Coltrane’s “Equinox.” What a season we have planned! Vanessa Rubin, Evelyn Wright, Ernie Krivda, Helen Welch, Dan Wilson—our guest artists are local friends with international reputations! My very best to you, Paul Ferguson Artistic Director The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra

In Memoriam of Fred Weisman October 19, 1926-July 18, 2017 Freddy Weisman was a true Clevelander, from Cleveland Heights High School, to Adelbert College to Case Western Reserve University, School of Law. Fred proudly spent two years as a radio man in the Navy during World War II and was a devout patriot until the day he died. He was passionate about his family, his friends, his law practice and music. He bacame a fan and benefactor of Cleveland Jazz Orchestra 32 years ago. The first time I met Fred he told me “The CJO is sensational, you will love them!” Over the ensuing years, he reminded me of that, as we smoked cigars, and listened to 78 and 33 RPM jazz records with our friends in Chautauqua, a special place he deemed “sensational.” I will never forget him parking his car (by invitation) inside a restaurant/bar in Chautauqua, so the patrons could enjoy great jazz coming from his car’s CD player. All of us who knew Fred will always remember him as a true “people person” and we will miss his warm smile and love. As Bob Hope always said, “Thanks for the memories.” We will always remember them as “sensational!” —Kenny Koblitz

If you want to change
YOUR COMMUNITY, be that change.
Isabel Trautwein, Cleveland Orchestra First Violinist, Program Director, Dreamer & Doer, Local Hero. Longing to share the experience of making music with children who had never been to Severance Hall, Isabel launched a strings program at the Rainey Institute in the Hough neighborhood. Now there’s a waiting list to learn how to play classical music. You, too, can play a part in creating lasting change within the Cleveland community by making a donation to the Cleveland Foundation — dedicated to enhancing the lives of all Clevelanders now and for generations to come.
Support your passions. Give through the Cleveland Foundation. Please call our Advancement Team at 1.877.554.5054 ClevelandFoundation.org
