The CJO has survived and thrived for three and a half decades. We have played with an incredible array of talent—from singers like Dianne Schuur to Sarah Vaughan (who said “I’d like to take this band on the road with me!”) to the Four Freshmen and Tony Bennett. Jazz’s best writers have also been featured—Sammy Nestico (who said “this is the finest band I’ve ever worked with”), Bill Finegan, Clare Fischer, Frank Foster, Maria Schneider, and Bob Brookmeyer. Our guest artists have been similarly amazing—Clark Terry, Joe Lovano, Ken Peplowski, Terry Gibbs, Jiggs Whigham, Carl Fontana, Paquito d’Rivera, Jimmy Heath and many, many more. Our audiences have been treated to daring themes that have pushed the envelope Scott Garlock of what might be possible for a big band. Likely, during this span, more original Executive Director music for and by the CJO has been created than any other large jazz ensemble in the United States. It goes without saying that central to all of this magnificent music has been the incredible playing of this fabulous band. The players in this band have been very loyal to it—not only because of the friendships cultivated on the bandstand, but because of the calibre of one another’s playing and the mutual commitment to maintaining that threshold. We have also been very active in bringing jazz and jazz education to our region’s students. Whether it be by doing ‘Side by Side’ concerts with local high school groups, serving as guest artists/clinicians or in a longer term residency (five CJO musicians are doing this right now for the Cleveland Municipal School District), CJO musicians have proven to be both world-class in their playing and in their teaching. None of these things would be possible if not for a dedicated audience and a supportive Board of Directors. The support that the CJO has enjoyed has been remarkable—for example, in 2006 many fans came to NYC to see us play EVERY night for a full week at the famed Birdland club! As a long time band member and as CJO’s Executive Director, I cannot thank you enough for your attendance, your support and your feedback through all of these years. CJO shows are singularly special musical events, and we look forward to sharing the finest in jazz education and entertainment for many years to come—thanks for helping the CJO to keep on swinging! We’ve planned a great season this year that runs the gamut from Irving Berlin with TMTP, Straight Ahead Jazz at the Bop Stop, sounds of Motown at Christmas, a Mardi Gras celebration at Beachland Ballroom, an intriguing evening at the Maltz with MacArthur genius, Regina Carter, and traditional Big Band with Ken Peplowski. We have two new faces in the band— Chris Coles and Chris Burge, and I have the pleasure of pondering how to showcase their fabulous talents. That’s enough planning! Let the spontaneity break forth! Evelyn Wright Experience: Professional vocalist for over twenty five years with experience in Jazz, R&B and pop music. Native of Cleveland, Ohio was voted Best Female Vocalist in 1985 at WCPN Radio. Winner of Most Promising Female Artist and Favorite Female R&B Singer in 1993 at the Midwest Urban Music Awards. Toured throughout the United States and Canada performing at prestigious hotels, night clubs and concert halls. Performed for First Lady Rosalynn Carter. Mayor Mike White of Cleveland presented a plaque of recognition of the huge following from performances throughout the city. Was awarded the Jazz Legend Award in 2008 from the TRI-C JazzFest. Education: Graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, Associate of Arts degree Cuyahoga Community College, one year at Cleveland State University, vocal instruction under Dr. John Howard Tucker for three years. Opening Act for: Mel Tormé, Joan Rivers, Harry Belafonte, Freddie Jackson, Regina Belle, Bobbi Humphrey, Jimmy McGriff, Ashford & Simpson, Bobby Watson, Bob James and David “Fathead” Newman. Recorded with: Philip Ingram, Gerald Albright, Mike Petrone, Jazz Alive and Chris Wright.
Reggie Kelly Currently Mr. Kelly is a seven year vocal member staging director for the NY Harlem Singers, a six member vocal ensemble that tours internationally, including Japan, Korea, China, and Singapore. He toured Trinidad and Tobago; Brussels, Belgium; and Lyon, France starring in “the black gospel.” He has garnered critical acclaim as a multi-award winning professional stage director, choreographer, and leading actor over the past 30 years. Mr. Kelly has opened up for Najee in the Flats and Angie Stone at the House of Blues. He also co-starred and toured with Grammy awardwinning artist Regina Belle in “Heaven’s Child”, the Emmit Till story. Mr Kelly has headlined the Pine Grill Jazz Festival in Buffalo, NY; the Sarasota Florida Jazz Society Annual Summer Jazz Fest; and has made guest appearances throughout the country, with recurring performances at both the Bop Stop and Nighttown in Cleveland, Ohio.

MEET THE CJO’S NEW SECRET WEAPONS Chris Burge
Chris Coles
Christopher Burge began his musical career at The Ohio State University, where he studied saxophone performance and music theory with Gene Walker and Hank Marr, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance degree in 1997. During his time there, Christopher toured Thailand with Honk, Wail, and Moan, toured Europe with the OSU jazz ensemble, played on a USO tour of maximum security prisons, and played concerts with Barry White, Louie Bellson, Stanley Turrentine and the National Black Music Caucus Big Band, and the Stars of the Lawrence Welk Show. After moving to Cleveland in late 1997, Christopher has played with internationally known artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gino Vannelli, Cyndi Lauper, David Sanborn, Mavis Staples, Nancy Wilson, Ronnie Spector, Clark Terry, Jane Monheit, David “Fathead” Newman, Bobby Caldwell, “Little” Jimmy Scott, Benny Golson, Eddie Holman, Diane Marino, Bill Cunliffe, and many top artists in Northeast Ohio, including Evelyn Wright, David Thomas, Ernie Krivda, and Helen Welch. Christopher is also active in the recording studio, writing and recording the theme song for the WVIZ PBS TV show “Applause”, recording for American Greetings, and the children’s show “The Care Bears”.
Christopher J. Coles is a graduate of Cleveland South High School (2004). In 2009 Chris received his Bachelor Degree in Saxophone Performance from Youngstown State University. It was here that he studied with world-renowned saxophonist and educator Dr. James C. Umble, jazz saxophonist Dr. Kent Englehardt, and jazz bassist and composer Dr. David Morgan. In 2012, Chris received his Master Degree in Saxophone Performance from the University of Akron. Chris has performed with many local and international jazz musicians such as Eddie Baccus Sr., Melvin Burks, Kenny Davis, Glenn Holmes, Bill Ransom, Cecil Rucker, Grammy Award winner Slide Hampton, Ralph Lalama, and Allen Vizzutti. Coles was accepted to perform in Italy with the Ohio Youth Jazz Orchestra. It was here that Coles performed with Wessell Anderson, lead alto saxophonist for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Chris also played at the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Festival in West Virginia with the Dana Saxophone quartet, performing at the International Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., and premiering a commissioned work by John Hollenbeck at the Whitney Art Museum Composers Workshop. Coles also recorded this work on John Hollenbeck’s album Rainbow Jimmies released in 2009. Some of Chris’s recent accomplishments include being a participant at The Banff Workshop for Jazz and Creative music in Alberta, Canada. It was there that Chris had the distinct honor of studying with some of the great pioneers in jazz today such as Vijay Iyer, Mark Turner, Imani Izuri, Tia Fuller, Billy Hart, Ingrid Jensen, Zakir Hussain, Somi, Yosvany Terry, and Miles Okazaki to name a few. In 2017 Chris was an awardee of the Knight Arts Challenge in Akron, Ohio and in 2018 Chris won grants from GAR Foundation as well as the Cleveland Foundation for his multimedia work Nine Lives. This 40-minute work premiered in 2019. Chris is currently based out of Akron, Ohio and is on faculty at Kent State University and The Tri-C Creative Arts Jazzfest Academy. Chris is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

CJO Educational Activities The CJO is helping to create the next generation of jazz performers and listeners through our educational programs: CJO Masterclasses The CJO will help you bring one of our musicians to your school to work with your students for one or more classes, customized to suit your needs. Side by Side Concerts CJO members work with students and prepare for a shared concert, featuring the sponsor school, as well as the CJO, performing both together and separately. CJO brings our rehearsals to your school CJO will rehearse at high schools in the Northeast Ohio region, giving students the opportunity to watch up close as the CJO sight-reads, discusses & masters new material for upcoming performances.
School Residencies Due to a grant from the Gund Foundation, the CJO will be doing a residency with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District this year. From Mid-October through early December, CJO musicians will be working at Ben Franklin Middle School. Free Student Tickets! Students and their band directors can attend a CJO concert for free in a “field trip” experience. CJO bank members meet with the students and directors prior to the show. Over 400 students took advantage of this experience last year. Clinics, Guest Artists and Adjudication Every year, the CJO helps fund performances and workshops by CJO musicians.
