This season includes a series of five concerts that are rich in their diversity and feature fresh, new charts and many new arrangements. Our 34th season showcases some of northeast Ohio’s great venues: the Hanna and Ohio Theatres at Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, Akron’s BLU Jazz+, and Beachwood’s Temple-Tifereth Israel.

The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Cleveland Jazz Orchestra has been Northeast Ohio’s premier jazz voice for 34 years, with the mission of enriching the cultural and intellectual fabric of the community with a uniquely American art form. CJO promotes jazz in its historical and contemporary forms through concerts with gifted jazz musicians, arrangers, composers and educators in Northeast Ohio. CJO aims for worldwide recognition in cooperation with guest artists, and looks to shepherd young musicians toward the future of jazz. The current season exemplifies this mission and vision through a variety of new music, new compositions and arrangements, and a stellar lineup of well-known guest artists and young up-and-coming talent. Introducing Your Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director, Paul Ferguson has been director of Jazz Studies at Case Western Reserve University since 1988. A graduate of the University of Akron and Eastman School of Music, Paul has traveled with the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller bands as lead trombonist and arranger and currently fills those functions with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Paul was principal trombonist of Canton Symphony Orchestra from 1989-98 and at various times has also performed with The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Opera, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland Chamber Brass, New Hampshire Festival Orchestra and various groups across Northeast Ohio. In 1995, Paul was the recipient of the Gil Evans Fellowship in Jazz Composition. Chris Anderson has played trombone with fine musicians in idioms spanning classical, Latin, jazz and gospel. In addition to writing and performing many different styles of music, Chris has won various local and national competitions and has performed with groups including Canton Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Heritage Orchestra. Chris currently works with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District through the All-City Arts Program. In addition, he is an instructor at The Music Settlement and Cuyahoga Community College. Among recordings Chris has contributed to is Dave Morgan’s The Way of the Sly Man. Chas Baker recently retired from Kent State where he was an associate professor of Jazz Studies and led the KSU Jazz Ensemble. His background includes experience as a soloist for the Austrian Radio & TV Network Big Band in Vienna, Austria. In 1968-69, as a U.S. Army band man, he 6

was trombone soloist with the 1st Air Cavalry Division Band, Viet Nam. Chas has been a very active player with Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and in that capacity has performed behind guest artists including Bob Brookmeyer, Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck. He also has worked in concerts starring the likes of Tony Bennett and David Sanborn. Dave Banks has returned to Northeast Ohio after a 20-year career in Las Vegas where he performed in more than 4,000 shows. In Las Vegas, Dave worked with many famous entertainers and was a member of Lou Elias Relief Orchestra. Dave has also performed with Nevada Symphony Orchestra, Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Chamber Orchestra. He was also a trumpet instructor and assistant director of bands at University of Nevada. He is a member of the faculty of Walsh Jesuit High School, where he teaches music and drama. Dave regularly performs with the Jack Schantz Jazz Unit and Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band. He also leads his own group, Dave Banks Big Band. Christopher Burge began his musical career at The Ohio State University where he studied saxophone and music theory with Gene Walker and Hank Marr, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance in 1997. During that time, Christopher toured Thailand with free-jazz group Honk, Wail & Moan, toured Europe with the OSU Jazz Ensemble, played on a USO tour of maximum-security prisons, and played concerts with Barry White, Louie Bellson, Stanley Turrentine, The National Black Music Caucus Big Band, and the Stars of the Lawrence Welk Show. Since moving to Cleveland in 1998, Christopher has played with internationally known artists Gino Vannelli, David Sanborn, Cyndi Lauper, Mavis Staples, Ronnie Spector, Clark Terry, David “Fathead” Newman, “Little” Jimmy Scott, Bobby Caldwell, Benny Golson, Eddie Holman, Nancy Wilson, Diane Marino, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Heritage Orchestra, Ernie Krivda and the Fat
Tuesday Big Band, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame house band, and area musicians such as Evelyn Wright, Helen Welch, Joe Hunter, Joe Bell, Sammy DeLeon, Dave Sterner, Ray Porrello, and Bill Ransom. Christopher also is active in the recording studio, playing saxophone, flute and clarinet for American Greetings e-cards, and he wrote and performed the theme song of the WVIZ-PBS TV show Applause. Currently, Christopher teaches saxophone at Skyline Music in Westlake, Ohio, and performs with his own trio and the blues-swing band Blue Lunch, which has just released its 8th CD, Above the Fold, on RipCat Records.

Johnny Cochran, a native of Cleveland’s southwest side, attended Cleveland School of the Arts and Cuyahoga Community College simultaneously during high school, studying saxophone with Ernie Krivda. He has had the opportunity to perform with artists such as Clark Terry, Carl Allen, Jason and Wynton Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Mike Lee, Billy Hart, and Rodney Whitaker. Johnny studied with Gary Bartz at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. While the saxophone is his primary instrument, Johnny also is proficient in piano, drums and several other woodwind instruments.
John Klayman is CJO’s featured tenor sax soloist. He has toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and has performed with the Jack Schantz Jazz Unit. A guest soloist and clinician at numerous regional universities, Klayman also has appeared with Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Paquito D’Rivera, The Four Lads, Bob Hope, the Temptations, and Manhattan Transfer, among others. John’s tenor is featured on recordings by vocalist Barbara Knight and CJO, Grupo Brasil, Paul Ferguson, The Cleveland Orchestra, and Janan. John also has worked on jingles for Higbee’s, Glidden Corp. and The Plain Dealer.
Scott Garlock is a full professor of Music at Ashland University. He has a degree in music education from Kent State University, two master’s degrees (music performance and music history) from The University of Akron and a doctorate from The University of Iowa. In addition to teaching for over five years in the public schools, Scott has also taught at Mount Union College and at Knox College. Scott was cited by Benny Green at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival for his “positive, spirited leadership.” He is also a member of Cleveland Pops Orchestra and Mansfield Symphony Orchestra. Scott served as president of Ohio’s chapter of IAJE, and of JECO (the state jazz education organization) which he helped create. Paul Hungerford, CJO charter member, received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in trombone performance from Cleveland State University along with his
Theresa J. May is a native of Cleveland, Ohio. She received her Masters degree in trumpet performance from the Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music and her Bachelor of Music from the University of Dayton. Theresa keeps a vigorous performance and teaching schedule. She is adjunct faculty at Cuyahoga Community College where she teaches Applied Trumpet, African American Music History and World Music. Theresa also plays trumpet in the Cleveland Opera Theater Orchestra and has performed with the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Sherrie Maricle, in the month-long production of Maurice Hines’ Tappin’ Thru Life at the Cleveland Play House. Joseph Miller is one of the most asked-for trumpet players in Northeast Ohio. His searing sound, joyful approach and high-energy solo work can be heard in all kinds of music and in all kinds of situations, from bashing funk rock to straight up classical… and, fortunately for Joe, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Classically and jazzily trained, Joe has toured and performed extensively with all sorts of international, regional and local artists. Joe currently holds the lead trumpet chair at Playhouse Square and has played for too many nationally touring Broadway shows and artists to mention. Joe has also toured internationally with the Grammy-nominated Acid Jazz group, Liquid Soul, and also with Bobby Caldwell. Joe has played lead and solo trumpet for the late Aretha Franklin, La India, Tony Vega, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli, Barry Manilow, The Funk Brothers and many others. He has also been a featured soloist with The Contemporary Youth Orchestra. His recording credits are many and varied, including Grammy-nominated recordings with Doug Johns, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Jack Schantz Jazz Unit, Paul Ferguson’s Jazz Orchestra, Sammy DeLeon, the late Gerald Levert, Impacto Nuevo, First Light and many more. Joe has been a member of the music faculty at Cleveland State University since 2011, specializing in jazz and commercial music. Joe is a proud Cleveland State University alum and former (and forever) student of both Charles Couch and Kenny Davis, and he credits Jack Schantz for helping him learn what it really takes to be a professional musician. Aidan Plank performs a diverse range of music throughout Northern Ohio. He studied with bassist and composer David Morgan as well as with Kevin Switalski of The Cleveland Orchestra. He is a graduate of Cleveland State University and has performed with Dan Wall, Joe Lovano, Judi Silvano, Joe Maneri, Janis Siegel, Frankie Avalon and others. He played baroque bass in the premier of JosephNicolas-Pancrace Royer’s Le Pouvoir de l’Amour (composed in 1743) in 2002 at Oberlin College as well as in the world premier of Randall Woolf

and Robin Stranahan’s ‘pop-up’ opera Frozen Community, produced by Real Time Opera in 2013. He can be seen performing explorations of improvisation in duo with Daniel Lippel. Jim Rupp has toured extensively with the bands of Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson and Glenn Miller. He is the drummer on three Woody Herman CDs: The Fiftieth Anniversary Tour, which was nominated for a Grammy Award, Legacy and Live In London. Jim spent eight years with Grammy Award-winning jazz singer Diane Schuur, and also has performed with artists such as Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Joe Lovano, Hank Marr, Buddy DeFranco, Clark Terry, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney and Natalie Cole. Jim presents workshops and educational clinics all over the country, currently teaches jazz drumming at The Ohio State University and has taught at the University of Michigan. Jack Schantz, former Artistic Director of CJO, is the Director of Jazz Studies at The University of Akron. Jack has toured with Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Artie Shaw Orchestra and Woody Herman. He has also worked in the pickup bands of Jimmy Dorsey, Larry Elgart and Guy Lombardo. Among shows he has worked: Miss Saigon, Annie Get Your Gun, Guys and Dolls, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Color Purple and The Sound of Music. He also has performed with artists such as Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Cleo Laine, Jack Jones, Nancy Wilson and Diane Schuur. He has played trumpet and flugelhorn with Cleveland Pops, Blossom Festival Orchestra and Band, and Akron Symphony. George Shernit, baritone saxophonist, has performed with The Cleveland Orchestra and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He also has worked numerous Broadway shows and is featured on records by CJO, The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Symphonic

Brad Wagner, saxophonist and composer, originally hails from Akron, Ohio. In June of 2003, Brad received his B.M. in Jazz Studies from University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Brad has studied with Rick VanMatre, Brad Goode, Phil DeGreg, John Von Ohlen, Marc Fields, Ernie Krivda and others. Brad has been a member of many jazz groups including Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band, Hendectet Jazz Collective, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and more. Brad leads his own quartet and sextet and stays busy composing and arranging for various groups and projects.

Howie Smith, saxophonist and composer, has presented concerts and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and Australia, and has performed and/or recorded with musicians/organizations as diverse and renowned as John Cage, The Cleveland Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, Elvis Presley and Tone Road Ramblers. In 2009, Howie was designated Professor Emeritus at Cleveland State University, where he was coordinator of Jazz Studies from 1979 to 2005, and served as Chair of the Art Department from 2003 through 2007.
Jackie Warren, one of the best jazz and Latin jazz pianists and arrangers in Northeast Ohio, has been called the “first lady of jazz” and has released three recordings of her own: Near You, Live at the Wi-Fi Cafe and Oblivion. A native of the Colorado plains, Jackie earned a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in classical piano from Cleveland State University. A specialist in merengue and salsa, Jackie also has worked on recordings by Jazz Heritage Orchestra and by Impacto Nuevo, the area’s leading Latin band.

Winds. Shernit earned a bachelor of arts degree in music theory and composition, as well as a master’s degree in performance, from Cleveland State University. Shernit has taught at Cleveland State, Case Western Reserve University, Ashland University, The University of Akron, and Muskegon University. A charter member of CJO, he also is the band’s personnel manager. He is a district sales manager with Jupiter Band Instruments.

Dear vic, It seems like only yesterday, when I came back home from Atlanta to Cleveland in 1990. I went to the Fairmount Temple to see the Four Freshmen, my favorite singing group. You introduced yourself in the lobby, prior to the concert, and told me all about the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. I was struck by your passion for the CJO, even though I was there to see the Freshmen. You really sold me, and over the next 28 years I missed very few CJO concerts, and went to many of them with you and Joanie. Little did I know you would become my mentor in things philanthropic, from Cleveland to Chautauqua. You drove me around the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution, introducing me to people who advocated for many different institution causes. Later, during lunch, you asked me “What cause do you most want to support?” As a fellow salesman, I quickly realized that you were using the “choice close.” Hence, the Audrey and Kenny Koblitz vocal music scholarship. You were called by many “a gentleman fundraiser.” All of us who knew and loved you, and we are legion, understood when you were soliciting for a cause, you were already a supporter of that cause. It is said, “you get what you give” and you got the love of a wonderful family, as well as the many people and groups whom you served. If I were to name those people, this program would contain two more pages, single spaced. You gave your love to Joanie through 70 years of marriage, to your daughters, Kathy, Cindy, Leslie and your late son Bobby. You had a smile and a kind word for everyone you met, friends and strangers alike. I was privileged to meet many of these people, particularly when we dined at restaurants in Cleveland and Chautauqua and I watched you “work the room.” During the years you valiantly fought Parkinson’s Disease, you never lost your sense of humor (which was legendary) and when you could no longer speak, you never lost your smile, as frustrating as it was for you. We, along with your family and many friends, miss you terribly, and know we will never see your like again. All our love, Audrey and Kenny

Musical Chairs From 1986-1990 and 2003 to now, I’ve had the distinct pleasure to sit in a number of remarkable chairs in the CJO. While I’ve played every trombone chair in the band multiple times, for years I sat next to and studied Paul Ferguson when he was our lead trombone player. At the same time, I had the absolute best place to sit for a CJO concert—next to Jim Rupp! I’ve gotten to hear Jack Schantz’s unbelievable long flugel lines in my left ear, and been made nearly deaf in my right ear from the searing lead trumpets of Dave, Joe and Scott. I’ve had a front row seat to the relentless energy of Howie Smith and our great saxophone section that can play anything and do so on all the woodwind doubles that often fells a lesser group of players. For the past few years, I’ve gotten to sit as the leader of the trombone section, and have enjoyed hearing Chris’ brilliant solos, Mark’s energy, and the always steady presence of Paul Hungerford. The last few years I’ve had the chance to sit in some other chairs with the CJO—first as our booking agent, and more recently in Marketing and Social Media. As of this season, I’ve been given the opportunity to serve the group as our Managing Director. After 20+ years of involvement with the CJO, I am so grateful for the chance to further the CJO and to work with Kenny, Paul and our Board of Directors. This chair I now occupy means that I will be looking for new ways for the CJO to be less of a well-kept secret and celebrated for the world class band that it is. I’ll also be looking for both your help and input to make us better. The CJO has existed for 34 years because of the support of the people sitting in the chairs in our audiences—we so appreciate your attendance and your help, and look forward to your help in advancing the CJO’s mission of providing the best in big band jazz on the concert stage and in our region’s schools. CJO and its many Educational Activities CJO views its educational responsibility seriously, and presents a variety of programs to nuture the region’s neophyte jazz musicians and listeners. Our projects include: The Side by Side Concerts CJO goes directly into the region’s schools to model, teach, and perform with Northeast Ohio’s neophyte jazz musicians. These programs typically involve CJO members working with high school students in advance of their shared concert date.

On the concert date, CJO sits next to the sponsor high school ensemble and plays, sightreads, and provides help to individuals and to the entire group. The evening concert then features the sponsor high school group and CJO performing both together and separately. Recently, these Side by Side events have taken place at Solon High School and Cuyahoga Falls High School. Following this experience, CJO offers each student a free ticket to an

upcoming CJO concert (and discounted tickets to family and friends). CJO Rehearsals in Schools Last season, the CJO began to do rehearsals at various high schools in the Northeast Ohio region. Students at these schools were offered free tickets to the concert that the CJO was rehearsing, and also had the chance to watch up close as the CJO sight-read, discussed and mastered new material.
