Jazz Enthusiasts, unite! The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra introduces its 2017-2018 season. The season tag-line “You Should Hear Us Now!” emphasizes the exceptional sound of this classic jazz orchestra. Subscription packages are officially on sale at Cleveland’s Playhouse Square box office. Tickets for individual shows go on sale to the public September 8th. Fans are encouraged to order subscriptions before September 8th in order to secure the best seating. Subscribers save by purchasing ticket packages that include the five-concert Series. Details about the Series shows are included on the attached subscription order form. Subscribers save by ordering subscriptions instead of purchasing tickets to individual shows. For example: a Premium Dress Circle subscription costs $220 + fees. The combined price for tickets to the five individual shows is $260 + fees. Fans will save over $40 by subscribing.

This year’s schedule begins with a show at the Gartner Auditorium in the Cleveland Museum of Art. For the final four shows, the Orchestra will return to Cleveland’s Playhouse Square theaters. Kenny Koblitz, Executive Director of the Orchestra said, “The Cleveland Museum of Art show facilitates the connection of two of Cleveland’s premier fine arts and culture organizations.” In regard to the Playhouse Square shows he said “Playhouse Square provides our audience with a first class experience. Evelyn Wright Evelyn Wright has been a professional vocalist for over thirty years and has been a central figure in jazz-making in Northeast Ohio. She revels in and performs easily all styles of jazz, R&B and pop. After studying voice with Dr. John Howard Tucker of Oberlin, she toured throughout the United States and Canada performing in top clubs and concert halls, and opened for the likes of Mel Torme, Joan Rivers, Harry Belafonte, Bob James and David “Fathead” Newman. Her many other notable performances include evenings for the First Lady Rosalynn Carter, Oprah Winfrey and General Colin Powell. In 2008, Evelyn was given the prestigious honor of the “Jazz Legend Award” from Cuyahoga Community College.
Musical Chairs From 1986-1990 and 2003 to now, I’ve had the distinct pleasure to sit in a number of remarkable chairs in the CJO. While I’ve played every trombone chair in the band multiple times, for years I sat next to and studied Paul Ferguson when he was our lead trombone player. At the same time, I had the absolute best place to sit for a CJO concert—next to Jim Rupp! I’ve gotten to hear Jack Schantz’s unbelievable long flugel lines in my left ear, and been made nearly deaf in my right ear from the searing lead trumpets of Dave, Joe and Scott. I’ve had a front row seat to the relentless energy of Howie Smith and our great saxophone section that can play anything and do so on all the woodwind doubles that often fells a lesser group of players. For the past few years, I’ve gotten to sit as the leader of the trombone section, and have enjoyed hearing Chris’ brilliant solos, Mark’s energy, and the always steady presence of Paul Hungerford. The last few years I’ve had the chance to sit in some other chairs with the CJO—first as our booking agent, and more recently in Marketing and Social Media. As of this season, I’ve been given the opportunity to serve the group as our Managing Director. After 20+ years of involvement with the CJO, I am so grateful for the chance to further the CJO and to work with Kenny, Paul and our Board of Directors. This chair I now occupy means that I will be looking for new ways for the CJO to be less of a well-kept secret and celebrated for the world class band that it is. I’ll also be looking for both your help and input to make us better. The CJO has existed for 33 years because of the support of the people sitting in the chairs in our audiences—we so appreciate your attendance, your help, and look forward to asking you to help us enrich the CJO’s mission of providing the best in big band jazz on the concert stage and in our region’s schools. Russ Mitchell Award-winning WKYC news anchor Russ Mitchell has had a storied career in both local and national television markets. He was been part of news programming in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Dallas before becoming a national correspondent for CBS news. Joining CBS in 1992, Russ became co-anchor of Up to the Minute, then a correspondent for Eye to Eye on CBS (1993–95), anchor of the CBS Sunday Night News (1995-1997), an original co-anchor on Saturday Early Show (1997-2007), anchor of the CBS Sunday Evening News (2006-2011) and of the CBS Saturday Evening News (20102011). He also substituted for Harry Smith and Mark McEwen on CBS This Morning, and he later became the primary substitute for Scott Pelley on CBS Evening News. Russ chose to become part of Cleveland’s community in 2011 as he wanted to return to doing local television, stating “I wasn’t going to go just anywhere. Cleveland reminds me a great deal of the city where I grew up, and I’m looking forward to bringing my family because I think we’re going to have a really good life there.”
CJO and its many Educational Activities CJO views its educational responsibility seriously, and presents a variety of programs to nurture the region’s neophyte jazz musicians and listeners. Our projects include: The Jazz Discovery Series—CJO band member Chris Anderson, (an employee in the Cleveland Public Schools) runs our “Jazz Discovery” series. In collaboration with Playhouse Square, CJO presents free community concerts in the US Bank Plaza downtown. These concerts focus on jazz and other genres, such as Jazz and Poetry, Jazz and Rap, Jazz and Dance. Chris also programmed and performed similar concerts at Trinity Cathedral’s Brown Bag Lunch Series and in several elementary schools. The Side by Side Concerts—Another important initiative has involved CJO going directly into the region’s schools to model, teach and perform with Northeast Ohio’s neophyte jazz musicians. These typically involve members of CJO working with high school students in advance of their shared concert date. On the concert date, CJO will sit next to the sponsor high school ensemble and play, sight read and offer help to the group at large and each individual involved. The evening concert then features the sponsor high school group and CJO performing both together and separately. Recently, these “Side by Side” events have taken place at Solon High School, The Hawken School, Brecksville/Broadview High School, Hudson High School and Cuyahoga Falls High School. After this experience for these students, a free ticket to an upcoming CJO concert was offered (with a discounted ticket offered to family and friends). Summer Jazz Camp—Last summer, CJO began a plan to host a Summer High School Jazz Camp, and is discussing a partnership this coming summer with the Roberto Ocasio Foundation’s Summer Latin Jazz Camp held at Baldwin Wallace University. Pilot Rehearsal Program—CJO did a pilot event at Orange High School prior to our “Love Supreme” concert in which Orange students attended our first rehearsal for that show. CJO is working to expand that program to include other schools in the coming years. Student Ticket Pricing—For all of our ticketed events at Playhouse Square and at BLU Jazz+ in Akron, a discounted student ticket is offered for students of all ages at the cost of $10.

It’s Time You Really Meet the Band Introducing Your Cleveland Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director, Paul Ferguson has been director of Jazz Studies at Case Western Reserve since 1988. A graduate of the University of Akron and Eastman School of Music, Paul has traveled with the Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller bands as lead trombonist and arranger and currently fills those functions with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Paul was principal trombonist of Canton Symphony Orchestra from 1989-98 and at various times has also performed with The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Opera, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland Chamber Brass, New Hampshire Festival Orchestra and various groups across Northeast Ohio. In 1995, Paul was the recipient of the Gil Evans Fellowship in Jazz Composition. Chris Anderson has played trombone with fine musicians in idioms spanning classical, Latin, jazz and gospel. In addition to writing and performing many different styles of music, Chris has won various local and national competitions and has performed with groups including Canton Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Heritage Orchestra. Chris currently works with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District through the All-City Arts Program. In addition, he is an instructor at The Music Settlement and Cuyahoga Community College. Among recordings Chris has contributed to is Dave Morgan’s The Way of the Sly Man. Chas Baker recently retired from Kent State where he was an associate professor of Jazz Studies and led the KSU Jazz Ensemble. His background includes experience as a soloist for the Austrian Radio & TV Network Big Band in Vienna, Austria. In 1968-69, as a U.S. Army band
man, he was trombone soloist with the 1st Air Cavalry Division Band, Viet Nam. Chas has been a very active player with Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and in that capacity has performed behind guest artists including Bob Brookmeyer, Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider and John Hollenbeck. He also has worked in concerts starring the likes of Tony Bennett and David Sanborn. Dave Banks has returned to Northeast Ohio after a 20-year career in Las Vegas where he performed in more than 4,000 shows. In Las Vegas, Dave worked with many famous entertainers and was a member of Lou Elias Relief Orchestra. Dave has also performed with Nevada Symphony Orchestra, Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Chamber Orchestra. He was also a trumpet instructor and assistant director of bands at University of Nevada. He is a member of the faculty of Walsh Jesuit High School, where he teaches music and drama. Dave regularly performs with the Jack Schantz Jazz Unit and Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band. He also leads his own group, Dave Banks Big Band. Christopher Burge began his musical career at The Ohio State University where he studied saxophone and music theory with Gene Walker and Hank Marr, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance in 1997. During that time, Christopher toured Thailand with free-jazz group Honk, Wail & Moan, toured Europe with the OSU Jazz Ensemble, played on a USO tour of maximum-security prisons, and played concerts with Barry White, Louie Bellson, Stanley Turrentine, The National Black Music Caucus Big Band, and the Stars of the Lawrence Welk Show. Since moving to Cleveland in 1998, Christopher has played with internationally known artists Gino Vannelli, David Sanborn, Cyndi Lauper, Mavis Staples, Ronnie Spector, Clark Terry, David “Fathead” Newman, “Little” Jimmy Scott, Bobby Caldwell, continued >> CLEVELANDJAZZ.ORG

Benny Golson, Eddie Holman, Nancy Wilson, Diane Marino, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Heritage Orchestra, Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame house band, and area musicians such as Evelyn Wright, Helen Welch, Joe Hunter, Joe Bell, Sammy DeLeon, Dave Sterner, Ray Porrello, and Bill Ransom. Christopher also is active in the recording studio, playing saxophone, flute and clarinet for American Greetings e-cards, and he wrote and performed the theme song of the WVIZ-PBS TV show Applause. Currently, Christopher teaches saxophone at Skyline Music in Westlake, Ohio, and performs with his own trio and the blues-swing band Blue Lunch, which has just released its 8th CD, Above the Fold, on RipCat Records. Johnny Cochran, a native of Cleveland’s southwest side, attended Cleveland School of the Arts and Cuyahoga Community College simultaneously during high school, studying saxophone with Ernie Krivda. He has had the opportunity to perform with artists such as Clark Terry, Carl Allen, Jason and Wynton Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Mike Lee, Billy Hart, and Rodney Whitaker. Johnny studied with Gary Bartz at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. While the saxophone is his primary instrument, Johnny also is proficient in piano, drums and several other woodwind instruments. Scott Garlock is a full professor of Music at Ashland University. He has a degree in music education from Kent State University, two master’s degrees (music performance and music history) from The University of Akron and a doctorate from The University of Iowa. In addition to teaching for over five years in the public schools, Scott has also taught at Mount Union College and at Knox College. Scott was cited by Benny Green at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival for his “positive, spirited leadership.” He is also a member of Cleveland Pops Orchestra and Mansfield Symphony Orchestra. Scott served as president of Ohio’s chapter of IAJE, and of JECO (the state jazz education organization) which he helped create.

Paul Hungerford, CJO charter member, received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in trombone performance from Cleveland State University along with his teaching certificate. He was a trombone student of James Taylor and a bass trombone student of Ed Anderson. A charter member of Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Paul also is a member of Heritage Brass Quintet. He has played with many big band performers including Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. Paul is currently the band and orchestra director at Wiley Middle School in the Cleveland Heights/University Heights School District. John Klayman is CJO’s featured tenor sax soloist. He has toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and has performed with the Jack Schantz Jazz Unit. A guest soloist and clinician at numerous regional universities, Klayman also has appeared with Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Paquito D’Rivera, The Four Lads, Bob Hope, the Temptations, and Manhattan Transfer, among others. John’s tenor is featured on recordings by vocalist Barbara Knight and CJO, Grupo Brasil, Paul Ferguson, The Cleveland Orchestra, and Janan. John also has worked on jingles for Higbee’s, Glidden Corp. and The Plain Dealer. Joseph Miller is one of the most asked-for trumpet players in Northeast Ohio. His searing sound, joyful approach and high-energy solo work can be heard in all kinds of music and in all kinds of situations, from bashing funk rock to straight up classical… and, fortunately for Joe, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Classically and jazzily trained, Joe has toured and performed extensively with all sorts of international, regional and local artists. Joe currently holds the lead trumpet chair at Playhouse Square and has played for too many nationally touring Broadway shows and artists to mention. Joe has also toured internationally with the Grammy-nominated Acid Jazz group,
Liquid Soul, and also with Bobby Caldwell. Joe has played lead and solo trumpet for Aretha Franklin, La India, Tony Vega, Tony Bennett, Frankie Valli, Barry Manilow, The Funk Brothers and many others. He has also been a featured soloist with The Contemporary Youth Orchestra. His recording credits are many and varied, including Grammy-nominated recordings with Doug Johns, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, the Jack Schantz Jazz Unit, Paul Ferguson’s Jazz Orchestra, Sammy DeLeon, the late Gerald Levert, Impacto Nuevo, First Light and many more. Joe has been a member of the music faculty at Cleveland State University since 2011, specializing in jazz and commercial music. Joe is a proud Cleveland State University alum and former (and forever) student of both Charles Couch and Kenny Davis, and he credits Jack Schantz for helping him learn what it really takes to be a professional musician. Aidan Plank performs a diverse range of music throughout Northern Ohio. He studied with bassist and composer David Morgan as well as with Kevin Switalski of The Cleveland Orchestra. He is a graduate of Cleveland State University and has performed with Dan Wall, Joe Lovano, Judi Silvano, Joe Maneri, Janis Siegel, Frankie Avalon and others. He played baroque bass in the premier of Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer’s Le Pouvoir de l’Amour (composed in 1743) in 2002 at Oberlin as well as in the world premier of Randall Woolf and Robin Stranahan’s ‘pop-up’ opera Frozen Community, produced by Real Time Opera in 2013. He can be seen performing explorations of improvisation in duo with Daniel Lippel. Jim Rupp has toured extensively with the bands of Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson and Glenn Miller. He is the drummer on three Woody Herman CDs: The Fiftieth Anniversary Tour, which was nominated for a Grammy Award, Legacy and Live In London. Jim spent eight years with Grammy Award-winning jazz singer Diane Schuur, and also has performed with artists such as Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Joe Lovano, Hank Marr, Buddy DeFranco, Clark Terry, Joe Williams,
Rosemary Clooney and Natalie Cole. Jim presents workshops and educational clinics all over the country, currently teaches jazz drumming at The Ohio State University and has taught at the University of Michigan. Jack Schantz, former Artistic Director of CJO, is the Director of Jazz Studies at The University of Akron. Jack has toured with Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Artie Shaw Orchestra and Woody Herman. He has also worked in the pickup bands of Jimmy Dorsey, Larry Elgart and Guy Lombardo. Among shows he has worked: Miss Saigon, Annie Get Your Gun, Guys and Dolls, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Color Purple and The Sound of Music. He also has performed with artists such as Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Cleo Laine, Jack Jones, Nancy Wilson and Diane Schuur. He has played trumpet and flugelhorn with Cleveland Pops, Blossom Festival Orchestra and Band, and Akron Symphony. George Shernit, baritone saxophonist, has performed with The Cleveland Orchestra and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He also has worked numerous Broadway shows and is featured on records by CJO, The Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Symphonic Winds. Shernit earned a bachelor of arts degree in music theory and composition, as well as a master’s degree in performance, from Cleveland State University. Shernit has taught at Cleveland State, Case Western Reserve University, Ashland University, The University of Akron, and Muskegon University. A charter member of CJO, he also is the band’s personnel manager. He is a district sales manager with Jupiter Band Instruments. Howie Smith, saxophonist and composer, has presented concerts and workshops throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Europe and Australia, and has performed continued >> CLEVELANDJAZZ.ORG

and/or recorded with musicians/organizations as diverse and renowned as John Cage, The Cleveland Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, Elvis Presley and Tone Road Ramblers. In 2009, Howie was designated Professor Emeritus at Cleveland State University, where he was coordinator of Jazz Studies from 1979 to 2005, and served as Chair of the Art Department from 2003 through 2007. Brad Wagner, saxophonist and composer, originally hails from Akron, Ohio. In June of 2003, Brad received his B.M. in Jazz Studies from University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Brad has studied with Rick VanMatre, Brad Goode, Phil DeGreg, John Von Ohlen, Marc Fields, Ernie Krivda and others. Brad has been a member of many jazz groups including Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz
Orchestra, Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band, Hendectet Jazz Collective, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and more. Brad leads his own quartet and sextet and stays busy composing and arranging for various groups and projects. Jackie Warren, one of the best jazz and Latin jazz pianists and arrangers in Northeast Ohio, has been called the “first lady of jazz” and has released three recordings of her own: Near You, Live at the Wi-Fi Cafe and Oblivion. A native of the Colorado plains, Jackie earned a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in classical piano from Cleveland State University. A specialist in merengue and salsa, Jackie also has worked on recordings by Jazz Heritage Orchestra and by Impacto Nuevo, the area’s leading Latin band.

In Memoriam of Fred Weisman October 19, 1926-July 18, 2017 Freddy Weisman was a true Clevelander, from Cleveland Heights High School, to Adelbert College to Case Western Reserve University, School of Law. Fred proudly spent two years as a radio man in the Navy during World War II and was a devout patriot until the day he died. He was passionate about his family, his friends, his law practice and music. He bacame a fan and benefactor of Cleveland Jazz Orchestra 32 years ago. The first time I met Fred he told me “The CJO is sensational, you will love them!” Over the ensuing years, he reminded me of that, as we smoked cigars, and listened to 78 and 33 RPM jazz records with our friends in Chautauqua, a special place he deemed “sensational.” I will never forget him parking his car (by invitation) inside a restaurant/bar in Chautauqua, so the patrons could enjoy great jazz coming from his car’s CD player. All of us who knew Fred will always remember him as a true “people person” and we will miss his warm smile and love. As Bob Hope always said, “Thanks for the memories.” We will always remember them as “sensational!” —Kenny Koblitz
