Good evening, PHOTO BY NEW IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHY
It is a joyous honor to welcome you to Cleveland Ballet’s 2018/2019 season at Playhouse Square. Tonight’s performance is brought to you with great excitement and much anticipation. As we begin our fourth season, we present to you a diverse and unified company of young and talented artists. Our artists from: USA, Argentina, Russia, Mexico, Cuba, Belgium, Japan and Puerto Rico, have made Cleveland Ballet a company of global inclusion. In tonight’s performance, contemporary and classical ballet works will be displayed with fast tempos and precise technique and musicality. We open the program with the magnificent score of Felix Mendelssohn, Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor, where fast movement embraces this brilliant melodious creation. As the evening progresses, classical and bravura ballets will showcase the strength of both female and male ballet dancers. Le Corsaire pas de trois and Don Quixote pas de deux are two of the most performed classics reflecting dancers’ extraordinary technical accomplishments and individual artistic qualities. Inspired by my visit to Argentina during the early years of my career a one act ballet, Provocativo, will culminate the program. Based on my own observations, it reflects how after performances, artists will gather in cafés all around Buenos Aires to relax, socialize and unwind from their daily demands. In this environment performers found themselves exposed to passion, desire and new love adventures. Set to tango music, it is my wish that the live music and the sensual movements, will ignite in you, the audience, passion and imagination. As one of Cleveland’s most visible classical ballet company and now resident company at Playhouse Square, Cleveland Ballet proudly carries the name of our great city. We are committed to serving all of Northeast Ohio with great performances, essential education and community outreach programs, combined with excellent programing for dance audiences of all ages. Since our humble beginnings, today we are reaching deeply into the hearts of our community working to cultivate and nurture an admiration for dance throughout the city. Thank you for joining us tonight, our season opener performance, to experience various styles of music accompanying our young and talented group of artists. We look forward to seeing you at future Cleveland Ballet performances at Playhouse Square. Respectfully,
Gladisa Guadalupe Cleveland Ballet Founding Artistic Director AUTUMN 201 8

Dear Cleveland Ballet Friends: Back in the 1980s, I was privileged to Chair the earlier version of Cleveland Ballet, and here I am again. The former Cleveland Ballet was an important artistic performing group on the Cleveland scene, but it moved to San Jose and is no more. Now we have a wonderful brand new Cleveland Ballet which was co-founded by Michael Krasnyansky, a successful Russian businessman who has settled in the Cleveland area, and his wife Gladisa Guadalupe, a great dancer originally from Puerto Rico who is the Artistic Director of the new Cleveland Ballet. As this exciting new Company begins its fourth season here as a resident performance group at Playhouse Square, we have formed a strong Board of Directors. We have all marveled at how the nurturing nature of Gladisa and her colleagues has attracted dancers from several different countries as part of this exciting Cleveland Ballet. As Michael is fond of saying, every major city deserves a great ballet company, and that is what Cleveland Ballet is becoming. So we thank you for your support, and we hope that you enjoy as much as we do this wonderful young and aspiring Cleveland Ballet. Gratefully,
Dick Pogue Chairman of the Board Cleveland Ballet

Cleveland Ballet Nutcracker presented by Cleveland Ballet With a sold out run of a holiday favorite the ballet ‘The Nutcracker’ during 2017, Cleveland Ballet returns to the Hanna Theatre for only 7 shows this coming December 2018. A production suitable to audiences of all ages, this production is Cleveland’s very own and is one to not be missed. The ballet in 2 acts is based on the original story of E.T.A. Hoffman with music composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The fascination of Tchaikovsky’s score and the suitability of the theme for holiday entertainment has inspired many choreographers, including Cleveland Ballet’s very own Artistic Director which has created a version with a twist! Running Time: 2 hours, with a 20 minute intermission
Frosted Winter Night Gala February 23 at The Tudor Arms Hotel
Coppélia presented by Cleveland Ballet Coppélia is a comic ballet based on two stories written by E.T.A. Hoffman. Dr. Coppelius is a doctor who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so life like that Franz, a village young man, becomes infatuated with it and pushes aside his true love Swanhilda. She shows him his folly by dressing as the doll, pretending to make it come to life, and ultimately saving him from an untimely end at the hands of the inventor. Choreographed for Cleveland Ballet by world re-known Spanish choreographer, Ramón Oller, this one-and-a-half length production is suited for audiences of all ages and is brought back to Cleveland audiences by ‘popular demand’. Running Time: 90 minutes, with a 20 minute intermission Questions about Cleveland Ballet 3 show subscriptions please email Marilyn.Niksa@Playhousesquare.org or by phone (M-F 10am-4pm) 216640-8799
Please Note: Children under two years old are generally not permitted in the theaters. However, everyone regardless of age must have a ticket. All children must be seated with an adult. As my concept got solidified and I began to study music, Astor Piazzolla, the World’s foremost composer for tango music, was the perfect choice. Piazzolla’s music is captivating, exotic, and provocative, inspiring me to
create a one act ballet filled with sultry and sensual movement. As the piece evolved, characters began to emerge. Some of these are: a young woman searching for her lost love, a lonely socialite lady, broken hearted young men, young female artists searching for new love adventures, a singer searching for a meaningful relationship, and many artists enjoying music and dancing. I hope you enjoy the performance as much as I have enjoyed the process of creation. Let tango music ignite your imagination. Gladisa Guadalupe Choreographer AUTUMN 201 8

Dance Chance Cleveland In 2015, School of Cleveland Ballet embarked on an exciting new journey. They began a dance education outreach program with Warrensville Heights Schools. This new program allows students the opportunity to experience ballet. Today, this program consists of three school districts, Warrensville Heights, Maple Heights and Bedford City Schools. Students come to not only learn ballet, but they learn self-discipline, respect, history and an appreciation for the arts. This experience is an outstanding and truly unique opportunity for the students.
