June 2013 On behalf of Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra, I invite you to become a subscriber and to deepen your relationship with the best music-making that the world has to offer. This coming season promises to be extraordinary. In addition to Franz, the Orchestra will be led by some of the world’s finest guest conductors. Plus, as The Plain Dealer’s recent announcement of the new season noted: “ Listeners also can look forward next year to an all-Brahms weekend with music director Franz Welser-Möst and a “Fall Festival” contrasting the Sixth, Eighth and Tenth Symphonies of Shostakovich with the Third, Fourth and Fifth of Beethoven. Equally prominent: a Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle featuring pianists Radu Lupu, Mitsuko Uchida, Hélène Grimaud, and Imogen Cooper.” The past season at Severance Hall saw an upsurge in attendance, particularly with young people. There are many people to acknowledge and thank for this success. Dozens of sponsors and donors have generously funded the innovations behind these achievements. The leadership of Franz and the Board of Trustees has been invaluable, and all of the institution’s employees have committed themselves to continuing to attract young audiences, next season and well into our second century. You can be part of new excitement at Severance Hall, enjoying prime seats, reserved parking, special events, and, best of all, truly great performances. We are dedicated to providing you with artistic experiences at Severance Hall that are unsurpassed anywhere else in the world. Thank you very much for considering a subscription for the coming season. Sincerely,
Gary Hanson Executive Director

Extraordinary performances. Exceptional experiences. HIGHLIGHTS
Opera: The Cunning Little Vixen MAY 17 & 22 Staged with innovative, original animation, Janáček’s magical ‘Vixen’ may seem to deal with childish things, but in fact plumbs the depths of human experience. With a score that evokes Moravian folk music, the opera tells the tale of a young female fox as she is captured by the forester, taken into humiliating captivity as a pet, escapes back into the forest, and discovers blissful love and the smaller pleasures of family life. The opera is a moving portrayal of the inevitable cycle of life and the eternal process of renewal. Sung in Czech with English supertitles.
Beethoven and Shostakovich oct 24, 25, & 26 Music Director Franz Welser-Möst presents a fascinating look at the music of two highly autobiographical composers whose lives and careers were separated by over a century. Their works demonstrate how great artists of two eras respond to similar themes in the world around them. Both were shaped by catastrophic world events. Beethoven withstood the Napoleonic Wars, whereas Shostakovich survived the iron reign of Joseph Stalin. Come experience this highly tempestuous, deeply emotional intermingling of music and politics.
Julia Fischer Plays Brahms JAN 9, 10, 11, & 12 Serious yet playful, passionate as well as wistfully romantic, and intellectual with a whisper of humor — Brahms was a great master of symphonic style with the ability to achieve a true dichotomy of emotion. You won’t want to miss Franz Welser-Möst conducting this all-Brahms mini-festival weekend, highlighted by the Violin Concerto as performed by the exceptionally gifted young violinist Julia Fischer.

The story begins like a work of fiction:
SIBELIUS Lemminkäinen’s Return RACHMANINOFF Rhapsody on a Theme
of Paganini WIGGLESWORTH Sternenfall BRITTEN Spring Symphony
A messenger arrives on Mozart’s doorstep with a commission for a Requiem Mass from an anonymous patron. Mozart began the work, but as he did, became increasingly convinced of his own fate. He said to a friend, “I am writing my own funeral music. I must not leave it unfinished.” Tragically, he was destined not to complete the Requiem. Mozart’s final piece is powerful and fearless in its vision of the Last Judgment and exquisite in its peaceful evocation of salvation and eternal rest — a work of great beauty. 7

WANG
Yuja Wang’s playing is described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “technically dazzling and heart-stoppingly beautiful.” All her piano wizardry is brought to the fore in Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto — considered by many to be the most difficult concerto in the piano repertoire. Brimming with luscious melodies, this concerto is a sure-fire crowd pleaser not to be missed.
