OUR MISSION Malachi House, created out of a Christian sense of ministry, serves persons who are terminally ill, without regard to gender, race, religion or national origin and without cost to the resident or family. This home ministers to individuals who need an available caregiver, who have limited or no financial resources and are in need of special home care in the final stages of life. Our trained staff and volunteers provide spiritual, emotional and physical support with the assistance of a hospice team.

THE MALACHI HOUSE CHAPEL WINDOWS The rays of sunrise/sunset project life beyond our comprehension. They represent the comfort of heaven; the lines go up to infinity. The iris, or sword lily, represents the sorrow of the Virgin at the suffering of Jesus, demonstrating both beauty and pain. The prisms throw rainbows into the room, the symbol of promise for lives filled with the mystery of suffering. They are like magic – sometimes there and sometimes not. They interact between heaven and earth, with nature and God.
The river represents life; it takes us places that we sometimes don’t want to go. Life’s hardships are shown through the twisted turns that eventually take us back to the rising sun, the Resurrection. The colors – blue, purple and violet – represent heavenly truth, imperial power and sorrow. Green represents the triumph of spring over winter, life over death. The golden sun is representative of healing, and the white spaces reflect innocence.

A RESIDENT STORY From the moment Bob stepped into Malachi House with his long hair and beard down to his chest, he had such a positive impact on each and every one of our staff members. One of the earliest memories of Bob when he first settled into Malachi House, was the very first thing he asked for – a shower and a shave. To meet his needs, we immediately reached out to Mike D’Amico, the owner of Allstate Barber, who volunteers his services at Malachi House. Wow - what a transformation for Bob! He wasn’t expecting all the attention he received from the staff and volunteers, but he smiled and nodded his head when the they proclaimed, “You look like a million bucks!” Even though we are there to care for Bob and make him feel welcome, it is he who makes us feel special with his expressions of gratitude and great stories. He is the kind of person that everyone wants to be around. Bob comes from four generations of truckers - starting with his great grandfather, whom Bob has an uncanny resemblance to. Staff members, volunteers and visitors enjoy gathering near Bob at the dining room table to hear about his travels throughout almost all 50 states in the U.S. – including one story when he took his mom on the road with him for a month. Bob loves Facebook, coffee with two sugars and a cold can of Squirt™ every once in a while. Bob is part of the Malachi House family, and we are blessed to share in his journey, whether he is on the road or here at home.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Our entire community has come forth to ensure that the Malachi House mission remains safe and functioning at a high level during this uncertain time. Although individuals, corporations and foundations are experiencing their own difficulties, Malachi House was placed at the top of their list to support the homeless who are terminally ill. We are so grateful to our Board of Directors, Associate Board and our staff who have shown their commitment and loyalty to the residents who they so deeply care for. The absence of the volunteers, community groups, social workers, chaplains and visitors has certainly taken its toll on our day-today operations, but we look forward to the calls, notes and kind gestures by so many of you to get us through the day. As we remember our mission, we are lifted by the soft spirit of our residents and encouraged by our ability to sustain our legacy each and every day. We would like to recognize our Clinical Director, Kathy Cooper, who will be retiring after 40 years at the end of August. Kathy has had a profound impact on the lives of the residents, staff, volunteers and hospice teams. She has educated us in the clinical area with an exceptional level of expertise, kindness and empathy. She will always be a beloved part of the Malachi House family and we wish her the best in the future. We are so very grateful for all you have done to continue our mission, and we will certainly keep you and your families in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We look forward to seeing you soon, although not in person, at our upcoming virtual events throughout the coming year!

IN MEMORY OF JIM ROOP Our entire community was saddened by the loss of Jim Roop, a long-time board member and benefactor of Malachi House. Jim and his beautiful wife, Connie, believed in the importance of giving back to the community and supporting non-profit organizations. As the founder of Roop & Co., Jim generously gave of his time and talent to Malachi House in many ways and played a key role in our marketing and public relations efforts by developing our annual report to ensure that our mission was properly communicated to our recipients. Before founding Roop & Co. in 1996, Jim served for 15 years as chief operating officer of Watt, Roop & Co. Earlier in his career, he served as vice president for Burson-Marsteller and Ketchum Public Relations. We were moved by one of Jim’s last requests, that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Malachi House on his behalf. Rest peacefully, kind and faithful servant.

COMFORT IN A GARDEN BY BOB RENSEL It’s no secret that gardens are therapeutic. They help lower blood pressure, reduce chronic stress and bolster immune systems. The additional benefits achieved from the Malachi House gardens are also emotional and spiritual. Whether visitors are in the garden or just viewing it from a window, terminally ill residents find a sense of calmness and inspiration from watching the birds, butterflies and squirrels dancing in the front garden. Research shows that along with that calmness, comes less anxiety, improved moods and a reduced need for pain medications. And why not? When we gaze upon nature, we gain perspective into the amazing complexity and beauty of life. The Gardeners of Greater Cleveland have a long history of beautifying the community for more than 88 years and were honored to be able to install the new gardens at Malachi House for the benefit of residents, staff and visitors. We are grateful to Kaki O’Neill and all the other supporters of this project. In the heart of a busy urban location, a small strip of nature goes a long way towards creating solace and beauty for all who encounter it.

KAKI’S GARDEN Bob Rensel is a volunteer at Malachi House and the former chief financial officer of Cleveland Botanical Garden (CBG), who transitioned into a horticulturalist at CBG to fulfill his true passion for gardening. Through a generous donation and with the help of the Gardeners of Greater Cleveland, Bob has transformed the Malachi House gardens into a beautiful setting, both on the front lawn and in our gated lot. Together, Bob and volunteers have planted more than 250 perennials, annuals and native plants. Our residents and Malachi House family can enjoy these urban gardens filled with bees, birds and butterflies. Bob dutifully waters when Mother Nature does not and has dedicated countless hours to bring our residents, “Comfort in a Garden.”

MANY THANKS TO KATHY COOPER, CLINICAL DIRECTOR Malachi House is so grateful to our clinical director, Kathy Cooper, who will be retiring in August. Kathy’s distinguished 40‑year career in nursing began with a focus in oncology before she ultimately transitioned to end-of-life care. Malachi House has been a part of her career for more than 25 years during her time as a community hospice nurse, where she brought many of her patients to spend their final days in peace at Malachi House. Kathy was part of the National Institute of Health (NIH) studies that discovered the medications used today to treat AIDS as a chronic disease. She recalls bringing patients suffering from AIDS to Malachi House when no one else would care for them. Kathy has provided the highest-quality care for Malachi House residents as an exceptionally knowledgeable and compassionate nurse and leader. Kathy always hoped she would be able to round out her career in this position, and although we will miss her dearly, we wish her the best in her new journey! 6

SPECIAL EVENTS LIGHTS FOR LIFE
ANNUAL BENEFIT Malachi House will virtually host its
33rd Annual Benefit on September 28, 2020 to celebrate the birthday of our mission.
Each year, we pause to honor our friends, family and loved ones through our “Lights for Life” celebration on the first Friday of December. Our supporters purchase a light on one of our beautiful outdoor evergreen trees as a tribute to those who mean so much to them. Our evening entails a tree lighting ceremony, followed by a reception to recognize those commemorated in our Lights for Life book.
MERRY PLOUGHBOYS This event features the Merry Ploughboys, directly from Ireland, for an evening of unforgettable traditional Irish music. We had a fantastic turnout of nearly 400 guests at this year’s Merry Ploughboys concert at Music Box Supper Club.
ADOPT A RESIDENT Malachi House’s Adopt a Resident program is our way of ensuring each of our residents has Christmas gifts they otherwise might not receive. Participants make our residents’ wishes come true by donating gifts that are personally suited to them through resident profiles listing favorite colors, sizes and gift ideas.

Annual gifts, of any size, are accepted at any time. You have the option of mailing a check, or for your convenience, donating online. You may also schedule a recurring gift payment on our website at www.malachihouse.org. As a donor, you can choose to designate gifts to a specific area or simply allow funds to be used generally in an area of greatest need.
Consider supporting Malachi House through a special occasion gift, such as making a donation in lieu of favors for your upcoming special occasion. You can let guests know you have chosen to support us by using table cards, which we will provide.

By partnering with your employer through its Corporate Matching Gift Program, you can double or even triple your donation to Malachi House! Many companies will match charitable contributions made by their employees, or their employees’ spouses. Some companies even provide matching funds to support employee volunteer hours. In addition to cash, Malachi House gratefully accepts donations of stock certificates. You can receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of your donation.
MEMORIAL OR TRIBUTE GIVING Memorial gifts are a meaningful way to fondly remember our loved ones. You can choose to make a special gift in memory of a family member or loved one. “I will spend my heaven doing good on Earth. I will let fall a shower of roses.” - St. Therese Before Malachi House came to be, St. Therese was watching over it. In 1987, a friend of Rev. Fr. Paul Hritz unexpectedly donated a monetary gift to be used for helping the needy. The donor had no idea that Fr. Paul had just completed a Novena to St. Therese to help him proceed with his vision of helping the homeless who were terminally ill. At that time, there was no funding available for his idea just faith in prayer to a special saint. However, that unexpected donation planted a seed for the formation of Malachi House. That same year, four row houses on Clinton Avenue were also donated to St. Malachi Parish. Work began immediately to renovate the homes, but Malachi House still needed parking to
satisfy the zoning laws. After serious negotiations, Malachi House purchased the house behind the row homes to provide a parking area. The back yard, covered with snow on a cold February day, was about to be cleared for the parking lot. To unbelieving eyes, a rose bush was discovered with a single, beautiful blooming red rose. St. Therese, also known as “The Little Flower”, had left her sign of the rose, blessing our work to continue with her favor and our confidence. Story after story flowed from this occurrence, beginning with prayers almost always answered by the patron saint of Malachi House. A statue of St. Therese was placed in the home to oversee the renovation that was being accomplished by hundreds of
volunteers from all walks of life. During that time, roses would appear in unexpected places at unexpected times as the work progressed. St. Therese’s wish was to carry out the mission of, “not great deeds but great love” to those most in need. Her wish was being fulfilled by the ongoing faith in God’s command to love one another, as told to believers by this great saint. ~ Lovingly remembered and recounted by Malachi House Co-founder, Catherine “Kaki” O’Neill Every year since that first sign from St. Therese in 1987, Malachi House celebrates her Feast Day on October 1 in the beautiful chapel, adorned with a shower of roses.
WISH LIST At this time, Malachi House is not accepting donations of any kind at our doors due to COVID-19 for the safety and security of our residents, staff and hospice teams. We are accepting only gift cards and donations by check in the mail, as well as credit card donations through our website.
