Meet the Advanced Practice Provider

A

dvanced practice providers (APPs) are increasingly becoming a vital part of the delivery of health care. APPs are registered nurses or physicians assistants who have received additional education at the masters, post-masters or doctoral level. These specialists are trained for a specific patient population, and are certified to assess concerns, diagnose and manage conditions, order tests and prescribe medications. There are specific classifications of APPs. The Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP) and Physician Assistant (PA) are prepared to practice in the primary care (day-to-day health care) or acute care (urgent) setting. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) focuses on delivering direct patient and family care, nursing education and research. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provides anesthetics for every type of procedure or surgery, in any setting. The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) provides care in diverse settings, including home, hospital, private office and community clinic, and the care includes gynecologic, family planning, prenatal and postpartum, childbirth and newborn care. Akron General’s team of caregivers includes more than 200 APPs, and the number continues to grow. These specialists provide a high level of specialty integral to the delivery of the absolute best care for our community.

Working together to better serve you

O

n Sept. 2, 2014, Cleveland Clinic became a minority owner of Akron General Health System, making Akron General an affiliate of Cleveland Clinic, as well as its exclusive health system partner in Summit County. As a result of the many successes since this partnership, including clinical improvements and cost savings, Akron General is now a full member of Cleveland Clinic. This next step allows the two health systems to build on what they have developed together and combine the clinical expertise and resources of Cleveland

Clinic and Akron General to strengthen and improve access to high-quality, affordable healthcare services for patients in our region. Simply, the people of Summit County will enjoy an unprecedented level of care close to home. The coming together of these two organizations provides patients with world-class services and represents a powerful moment in the history of healthcare delivery in Summit County.

Osteoporosis starts earlier than you think

O

steoporosis affects more than 10 million Americans. It causes people to lose bone mass, leading to weaker bones and an increased risk of fracture. While most people have heard of osteoporosis, many believe that the disease only affects older adults. Bone loss can begin around the age of 35 for the average person and even earlier for those taking certain medications, as well as women with eating or menstrual disorders. Symptoms of osteoporosis It’s referred to as a silent disease because often, until a fall or collapsed vetebra occurs, many people with osteoporosis do not have any symptoms. Even then, it might present only as aches or pains, especially in the back. Loss of height or curvature of the spine are definitely a clue. Risk factors for osteoporosis It’s important to remember than anyone can develop osteoporosis and that your risk increases with age. Women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men, as estrogen deficiency is one of the primary causes of bone loss in women during and after menopause – it is most rapid during five to seven years following menopause. Other risk factors for osteoporosis include: ¢ Having a personal history of fracture ¢ Having a family history of fracture after age 50 ¢ Weighing less than 130 pounds or being of small frame ¢  Having an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia ¢  Consuming a diet containing little or no calcium, phosphorus or vitamin D, but high in soft drinks (three or more a day) ¢  Extended use of certain medications (such as steroids) and medications that treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis, breast cancer, thyroid disease or seizure disorders ¢ Getting little or no exercise Akron General Osteoporosis Center Patients who’ve had a fracture due to osteoporosis can make an appointment at the Akron General Osteoporosis Center. Our advanced practice nurse providers work with patients and their primary care provider on customized counseling, treatment options as well as prevention strategies. Be sure to ask your doctor how you can prevent osteoporosis. For more information about the Osteoporosis Center, call 330-344-7198.

10 tips for a healthy 2016 E 1

ach year people make New Year’s resolutions, a lot of which focus on improving their health. Here are some easy-to-follow tips that can help keep you healthy and well throughout 2016 and beyond. Get moving. People who exercise regularly are more likely to live longer and healthier than those who don’t exercise. Additionally, exercise can help reduce your chances of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer. On top of those benefits, exercise can help relieve stress, promote a healthy weight and improve sleep.

2

Eat more fruits and vegetables. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Choose from a mix of colors and be sure to include leafy greens, berries and fiber-packed beans. Avoid foods high in sugar, saturated fats and trans fats or those that are heavily processed.

3

Drink more water. Dehydration can cause a variety of health ailments, including headaches, muscle cramping and digestive issues. Most people need between five and eight glasses of water daily; however, each person is different and should be aware of their hydration level, especially on hot days or when activity level is increased.

4

Take a break. Stress, especially over long periods of time, can lead to physical changes in your body. Next time you feel stressed, take a break and breathe. Inhale through your nose then slowly exhale through your mouth. As you exhale, make a long sighing sound as you do. Repeat three or four times. This exercise relaxes you by decreasing your blood pressure and stress-hormone levels and bringing more oxygen to your heart and brain. Sometimes it also helps to talk to a friend or family member – just voicing your concerns can make you feel better.

5

Get enough Zzzzs. Sleep is a vital part of life. It’s a restorative process that is critical to the body’s overall well-being. On average, adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Inadequate sleep, over a period of time, is associated with physical and mental health issues, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression. In addition, lack of sleep can lead to difficulty concentrating or remembering facts, daytime sleepiness and a tendency to be on edge or irritated throughout the day.

8

6

8

7

9

Quit smoking. It’s never too late to quit smoking. In fact, once you quit, your body begins to recover within weeks. A year later, your risk of heart attack will decline by about 50 percent. After 10 years, your risk of lung cancer will almost be the same as if you never smoked. Additionally, your risk for stroke, coronary heart disease, respiratory problems and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will decline. Wash your hands. Cold and flu season is here, and the most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands. Most people catch colds or the flu by rubbing their nose or eyes after their hands have been contaminated with germs. By washing your hands frequently, you wash away germs that you may have picked up from other people or surfaces. Be sure to rub your hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds before rinsing. If soap and water are not available, and hands are not visibly soiled, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to rub hands together for at least 15 seconds in order to reduce the risk of spreading illness-causing germs.

Get screened. Prevention is medicine and there are some simple screenings that can help detect certain types of conditions and diseases early on, when they are more easily treated. For example, everyone over the age of 50 should talk to their doctor about a colon cancer screening, and women over the age of 40 should have yearly mammograms. Visit akrongeneral.org/wellnessjournal to request a free Akron General Wellness Journal with screening recommendations. Know your numbers. In order to better manage your health this year, it’s important to know where you stand. Some important numbers that everyone should know include: weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and cholesterol. If you’re at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, then you should also have your blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c numbers checked.

10

Talk to your doctor. One of the first steps toward wellness starts with getting a primary care doctor. He or she can be your best health champion and guide. Primary care doctors are typically the first medical point of contact for patients, helping to manage your overall health, diagnose new illnesses and manage chronic diseases. Need a physician? Visit physicians.akrongeneral.org or call 330-344-CARE (2273).
