LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We are privileged to be able to continue to fulfill the vision and mission of Malachi House initiated by our Co-founders, Fr. Paul Hritz and Kaki O’Neill. It is difficult to see our residents come to Malachi House in their terminal state, many times with fear and confusion in their eyes. As the days and weeks go by, it is truly a blessing to witness their transformation as they smile, enjoy home cooked meals, feel a sense of family and engage with volunteers, hospice teams, staff and board members. The peace they ultimately experience is a result of the loving care they receive.

Every day our team at Malachi House works together to improve our service to our residents and our community. Our top priority after resident care is to be good stewards of the generosity and support given to us by individuals, foundations, corporations and community partners. The ongoing commitment of each one of these groups enables us to deliver the exceptional care that Malachi House is known to provide. The Gund Foundation has generously donated the funds needed to launch a threeyear strategic plan to implement best practices to ensure even more effective use of our resources. They have also given us the opportunity to create a new, more informative and user friendly website. We look forward to presenting these and other new ideas to secure our mission for the future. Once again, thank you for your dedication and commitment to Malachi House.

TOM BRANDT Tom has been a weekly kitchen dinner volunteer for 14 years.

Married for 42 years to Jackie, Tom discovered Malachi House in a PLAIN DEALER article. “I read about Malachi House and a resident that really touched me.” A favorite memory is with a resident, Joyce, who loved Elvis Presley. “She was always in a wheelchair, but one day we had an Elvis impersonator visit and sing to Joyce. She was so overjoyed that when he sang her favorite song, she actually stood up from her wheelchair!”

Ann C. Lutz Kaki asked me if I would be willing to take a tour of Malachi House and of course I said yes. That was honestly the first time I realized how important Malachi House is to those we serve. To be able to give comfort, friendship and dignity to the dying homeless in their last days and weeks is so incredibly important and yet so often overlooked. That is why I am so proud to be a part of Malachi House and hope to be for a very long time.

I lived in Rocky River for over 30 years but moved to the Clifton Park area of Lakewood about 3 years ago. I have been married to my husband, Vid for almost 29 years and we have two children, Vid, Jr. (22) who recently graduated from Vanderbilt University and will be moving to Chicago, and Mary (13) who will be a freshman at Magnificat High School in the fall. I have been a Financial Advisor with UBS Financial Services for 31 years. I work with private clients focusing on comprehensive financial planning and investment management. I also serve on the board of Vocational Guidance Services and am a member of St. Christopher Parish in Rocky River.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW STAFF MEMBER Koula Callas We are pleased to introduce Koula Callas as our new Volunteer Coordinator. Koula spent more than 3 years with Cleveland Clinic Hospice, during which she often visited Malachi House with the Cleveland Clinic hospice volunteers she supervised. Koula shared that she fell in love with Malachi House from the moment she stepped inside. She says that each morning she does not feel like she is going to work, rather, Koula feels like she is going to her friends’ home to provide some help to them. You can read more about Koula on our new and improved website, launching soon!

GERALDINE Great personality. Always wanted to teach the cook her recipes including her Jambalaya recipe. An avid dog lover, dancer and wearer of jazzy hats, Geraldine was full of love and light.

LYNN Loved it here. Crazy about her ice cream. She told me this place makes it very easy for her to relax. The atmosphere was calm and quiet and she felt at peace here. She was a very sweet, brave lady who I felt liked the simple things in life. She will truly be missed and will forever be a part of Malachi House.

LOUISE When I think of Louise, I remember how much she loved orange soda. She was very independent and gracious and was so excited when Santa came for a visit.

YOLANDA Very sweet. Always grateful and kind, from the moment she came here. Best moment was when our Caregiver colored her hair, she was so funny, showing it off!!! George and Yolanda became really good friends. He would have his family bring food and he would share it with her. They were always smoking buddies!

MISSION STATEMENT

Malachi House, created out of a Christian sense of ministry, serves persons who are terminally ill without regard to gender, race, religion, or national origin and without cost to the resident or family. This home ministers to individuals who need an available caregiver, who have limited or no financial resources and are in need of special home care in the final stages of life. A trained staff and volunteers provide spiritual, emotional, and physical support with the assistance of a hospice team.
