t Ohio Light Opera, June is indeed bustin’ out all over … and July and August too! Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, based on Ferenc Molnár’s 1909 poignant play Liliom, remains one of the cornerstones of mid20th-century musical theater. Rodgers said it best himself: “Oscar never wrote … more moving lyrics and … my score is more satisfying than any I’ve ever written…. It affects me deeply every time I see it performed.” When out-of-work carnival barker Billy Bigelow, after marrying mill girl Julie Jordan, becomes frustrated with his jobless state, he begins to take it out on her. When he learns that she is with child and that he has no means to support the family, he sees no alternative but to join with an acquaintance in a payroll heist. When his plan backfires in a big way, he finds himself years later with one more chance. Song gems include “If I Loved You,” “When the Children Are Asleep,” “What’s the Use of Wond’rin’,” Billy’s groundbreaking “Soliloquy,” and the supremely uplifting, yet tear-inducing, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Conductor: J. ith almost 150 titles in its repertoire, you might think that OLO has covered all the bases … but not quite! This season the company follows up its blockbuster 2018 hit The Pajama Game with the second (and sadly, last) Adler and Ross hit, Damn Yankees. When Ross passed away at age 29 soon after the show’s opening, it closed the book on a team that seemed destined to join the ranks of Rodgers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Loewe. Middle-aged baseball fan Joe Boyd would give anything to see his hapless Senators beat the Yankees and claim the pennant. The Devil appears, accepts his offer, and in eventual exchange for his soul—but providing an escape clause—transforms Joe into a first-rate slugger. He joins the Senators and leads them to the season’s final two games, needing only a single win against the Yankees. To ensure that he “cashes in” on his deal, however, the Devil has called on his seductive “assistant” Lola to derail Joe from appearing in these games. f you just can’t wait until November, you won’t want to miss OLO’s production of Gershwin’s outrageously satirical—yet perhaps still ringingly all too true—political musical Let ’Em Eat Cake. A sequel to Of Thee I Sing (seen at OLO in 2009), the show is enjoying its first full American production since its 1933 premiere. When President Wintergreen loses his reelection bid to Tweedledee, he and his bumbling former vice-president Throttlebottom lead a revolution against the new government, overthrow the democracy, and establish a dictatorship. When ten nations send representatives to discuss their war debts, but only Finland agrees to pay, Wintergreen proposes a “double or nothing” baseball game between the nine holdouts and the Supreme Court justices. When umpire Throttlebottom blows a foul ball call and the United States loses the game, Wintergreen and Throttlebottom are sentenced to death. But, the show ain’t over yet! Ira’s integrated lyrics and George’s captivating and, at times, complex music—topped off by the sublime contrapuntal duet “Mine” between Wintergreen and wife Mary— point the way to their masterpiece of two years later, Porgy and Bess. n June 26, 1979, the Ohio Light Opera inaugurated its premiere season with a production of The Gondoliers. This comic opera, the last great success of Gilbert and Sullivan, is set in 1750 Venice and is arguably the pair’s most lilting, sparkling, and dance-filled score. The story deals with two foster brothers, gondoliers Marco and Giuseppe, who learn that one of them is presumably the heir to the throne of Barataria and was wed as an infant to Casilda, daughter of the impoverished Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro. The two gondoliers, however, through a game of blind man’s bluff, have selected and married Gianetta and Tessa. Toward the goal of replenishing his coffers, the Duke has come to Venice to seek the missing monarch for his daughter’s hand. To further complicate matters, Casilda is in love with Luiz, the Duke’s attendant and drummer. But … things are seldom what they seem! Song hits include “From the Sunny Spanish Shore,” “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes,” “Dance a Cachuca,” and “When a Merry Maiden Marries.” Conductor: J. n none of their collaborations did G&S deal as directly with contemporary society as in Patience. Designed as a mere spoof of the aesthetic movement that was sweeping England, the work was so popular that it wound up actually reinforcing the movement. With an initial run exceeding those of both H.M.S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance, Patience remains a fascinating portrayal of the fanaticism that can accompany social fads—something not totally foreign to our time. All the village lasses except the milkmaid Patience worship the pretentious poet Reginald Bunthorne. She sets her heart on her dashing childhood sweetheart, Archibald Grosvenor. But to love such perfection is selfish, she reasons, so she turns her attentions to Bunthorne. The other maidens now desert him for Grosvenor, who is convinced by his rival to de-aestheticize and become commonplace. But Bunthorne’s plan backfires. Sullivan’s score brims with melodic gems: “Love Is a Plaintive Song,” “The Magnet and the Churn,” and the irresistibly engaging BunthorneGrosvenor duet “When I Go Out of Door.” Conductor: TBD Director: Steven A. ver 41 seasons, OLO shows have been set in such exotic locales as Peru, Russia, Madrid, Indonesia, China, Greece, and even Hades. So, what’s left, you may ask? How about the moon! Inspired by Jules Verne’s 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon, Jacques Offenbach and his librettists created, in Voyage to the Moon, a wonderfully wacky work, but with some of the composer’s most exalted operettic music. Prince Caprice, bored with life on Earth, has no interest in inheriting the crown from his father, King V’lan—he wants to go to the moon for some excitement. He engages the King’s scholar, Microscope, to find a way of getting him there. The sage returns days later with a 20-mile-long cannon, which propels him, Caprice, and V’lan to the lunar surface. There they meet their equivalents: King Cosmos, his advisor Cactus, and the Princess Fantasia. Among other “adjustments,” the earthlings must deal with the reality that, on the moon, love is considered a disease. Caprice has fallen hard for Fantasia, but, for obvious reasons, she shuns him. HAM! When the recently widowed Selma, daughter of American billionaire Thomas Brockwiller, swears off men forever and, with her girlfriends, forms an organization, Women Hate All Men!, she little realizes what she’s in for. Her father wants her to marry race car driver Harold, son of a business acquaintance. But Harold’s sister Juliane, who was once engaged to a man who left her for Selma, wants revenge. Under the false name Miss Grant, Juliane joins WHAM! and informs Selma that Harold’s sister has been known to dress up as a man and impersonate her brother. Selma, seeking a little fun with her WHAM! friends, decides to receive Harold—believing him to be Juliane. She goes so far as to invite him to kiss her in public. Her scheming father, feigning shock at this display, declares that this better be an engagement kiss. Selma, still reveling in the folly of the whole affair, agrees and Harold and Selma become man and wife. But when Juliane appears and Harold addresses her as “sister,” Selma goes ballistic. Lehár’s music for this remarkable female empowerment show bubbles with the same playfulness and sensuality that characterized his Merry Widow of just one year later. or forty one seasons, The Ohio Light Opera has dedicated itself to the exploration and production of the best of traditional operetta and musical theater. Founded by James Stuart as a Gilbert and Sullivan repertory summer festival, the company has grown to encompass all forms in the light opera canon. This includes the complete Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, as well as the recognized treasures from the Viennese, French, Hungarian, German, British, and American repertoire. In recent years, the company has expanded its offerings to include traditional musical theater—rare musical gems as well as popular works that are nevertheless being produced less often today. Composers represented include Adler and Ross, Berlin, Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Gershwin, Kern, Leigh, Lerner and Loewe, Loesser, Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Rodgers and Hart, Styne, Sondheim, and Willson. Along with this unique mission, the company also reconstructs and produces those rare operetta titles of artistic value that were popular in their own times but have long since been forgotten. The historical performance practices of each work premiered are delicately balanced with the resources of a state-of-the-art theater and engaging and entertaining performance
values. Each summer, between seven and nine titles are presented in a revolving format of approximately 60 performances over an eight-week period. Nearly 20,000 patrons each season see productions in The College of Wooster’s intimate Freedlander Theatre. Over 120 company members from around the United States are selected each year to become a part of our residency program. The 40 performing artists who make up the vocal ensemble are chosen for their abilities to perform and work at the highest level in all disciplines demanded by the company’s specialized repertoire: singing, acting, and dancing. We make every effort to balance the artistic traditions of the past with the sensitivities expected from our present society. Although words may be omitted and stereotypes softened, OLO performance editions sometimes contain prejudices that were prevalent at the time of a work's creation. To completely ignore these prejudices, or change the creation entirely, would be the same as not acknowledging or recognizing that they existed. —Steven A. Daigle

s the title suggests and in appreciation of 41 years of audience support, the Ohio Light Opera will be providing its OLO family with a week of special events. From July 28 to August 1, the company will be offering lectures, musical concerts, and video presentations—all celebrating our 42nd festival season and our unique mission. These sessions are free of charge (first come, first served) for OLO show ticket holders. In the true spirit of a festival, these extra events make a wonderful addition to a week during which patrons can see and hear all seven shows!
Special Events JULY 28 – OLO GOES HOLLYWOOD SUNNY SIDE UP! SONG HITS FROM HOLLYWOOD’S GOLDEN AGE A musical revue featuring your favorite songs— and a few lesser-known gems—from the golden age of Hollywood musicals, from their beginnings in the late 1920s through the early 1950s. Thrill to the tunes of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Vincent Youmans, and others. The show features OLO vocalists and a witty, sentimental storyline that will bring back memories of these tunes of a bygone era. TUESDAY JULY 28
JULY 29 and JULY 31 – TREASURES FROM THE “MERRY VIDEO VAULTS” Two full-morning sessions will be devoted to operetta and musical theater on video. The first will feature clips from past OLO seasons, ranging from the 1980s to the present. If you saw the presentations the past two years (or even if you didn’t), you won’t want to miss this one—all new material. The second session will offer a surprise feature film presentation! JULY 29-AUGUST 1 – LECTURES Enjoy four days of lectures given by OLO company members and a few special guests. The focus of these talks will be on the repertoire in the 2020 season. JULY 30 – SONGS FROM THE CUTTING-ROOM FLOOR The path from conception to opening night of an operetta or musical was typically a long one, with songs reworked, reassigned, deleted, or added to fit the evolving demands of the show and its stars. This two-hour concert, back by popular demand and presented by members of the OLO cast, will feature discussion and performance of songs that were originally cut from or added to shows of this season’s repertoire as well as shows from past seasons.

These arrangements are at the discretion of the house manager in consultation with the artistic director and performing artists. Thank you for your cooperation. Pre-Performance Talks Friday and Saturday Evenings at 6:30 p.m.: Enhance your enjoyment of the evening’s performance by learning lesser-known facts about the show’s history and tips to recognize the unique special pleasures of each show. We feature lecturers seasoned in the experience and study of operetta. No reservations are necessary. Lectures begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and are held in the Lean Lecture Room, down the hall from Freedlander Theatre Lobby.
