At Ohio Light Opera, Loesser is more—“a bushel and a peck” more! No American musical has garnered more unanimously glowing accolades than Frank Loesser’s 1950 musical fable Guys & Dolls. Based on the stories and characters of famed writer Damon Runyon, the music, lyrics, and book bristle with the seedy street life of New York City. The show’s characters have assumed legendary recognition: gambler Sky Masterson has fallen hard for Save-A-Soul Mission reformer Sarah Brown; bookie Nathan Detroit has been engaged for 14 years to nightclub chanteuse Miss Adelaide, who laments her psychosomatic cold that has lasted just as long; and horseplayer Nicely-Nicely Johnson provides a revivalist confession (“Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat”) when forced to give testimony at the Mission. Song hits include: “Luck Be a Lady,” “If I Were a Bell,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” and “My Time of Day.”

In its inexhaustible and timeless melodies and romantic setting during one of history’s darkest hours, The Sound of Music remains one of the gemstones of American musical theater. It was the last collaboration, and greatest commercial success, of Rodgers and Hammerstein, who, in their ten musicals beginning with Oklahoma!, immeasurably raised the bar of musical theater concept and production. Set in 1930s Salzburg and inspired by the real-life musical exploits of the Trapp Family Singers, the show enchanted audiences for almost four years on Broadway and in a 1965 film that became one of the highest-grossing pictures of all time. Hit songs include “Maria,” “My Favorite Things,” “DoRe-Mi,” and “Edelweiss,” as well as several gems not included in the film. Bring the whole family—from your grandchildren to your grandparents.

ME AND MY GIRL (1937)

Ingredients for a winning musical: charm; dance aplenty, including tap; melody after melody, including a candidate (“The Lambeth Walk”) for the most infectiously contagious tune of them all; and an engaging plotline centered on a less-than-posh Cockney, decked out in checkered suit and grey bowler, who learns that he is the longlost Earl of Hareford. Don’t look any further—simply come to OLO’s production of Noel Gay’s 1937 musical Me and My Girl. When it was revived in the mid-1980s, it took both Broadway (1400+ performances) and London (3000+ performances) by storm. Song titles include the upbeat title tune, “Hold My Hand,” “Love Makes the World Go Round,” and “Leaning on a Lamp Post,” popularized in the 1960s by Herman’s Hermits.

On June 26, 1979, the Ohio Light Opera inaugurated its premiere season with a production of The Gondoliers. This comic opera, the last great success of Gilbert and Sullivan, opens in 1750 Venice and features what for many is the pair’s most lilting, sparkling, and dance-filled score. The story deals with two foster brothers, gondoliers Marco and Giuseppe, who learn that one of them—but which one?—is presumably the heir to the throne of Barataria and was wed as an infant to Casilda, daughter of the impoverished Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro. The two gondoliers, however, through a game of blind man’s bluff, have selected and married Gianetta and Tessa. The Duke has come to Venice to seek the missing monarch for his daughter’s hand. To further complicate matters, Casilda is in love with Luiz, the Duke’s attendant. But … things are seldom what they seem! Song hits include “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes” and the evercaptivating “Dance a Cachucha.”

THE COUNT OF LUXEMBOURG

Barely had the world recovered from the sensation created by The Merry Widow than its composer Franz Lehár did it again with his 1909 operetta The Count of Luxembourg, which remains to this day one of the supreme gems from the Silver Age of Viennese operetta. The story, originally written for a Johann Strauss operetta more than a decade earlier, centers on a plot hatched by Prince Basil to secure an aristocratic title for the opera singer Angèle, whom he wishes to wed. He arranges that she first marry—and soon thereafter divorce—the penniless, and thus easily bought, Count René. The concocted wedding takes place with René and Angèle on opposite sides of a screen, never within view of each other. Lehár’s music is replete with toetapping marches, jaunty polkas, and sensuous waltzes.

By general acclaim, the greatest of the Edwardian musicals that graced the stages of London in the post-Gilbert and Sullivan era, The Arcadians boasts a bewitching musical score, a comic and satirical plot, and an ever-relevant final message that have entertained audiences on three continents for well over a century. When London aviator James Smith bails out of his plane over Arcadia, near the North Pole, he discovers a society in which truth reigns supreme and lies are loathed. When he himself is caught in a lie, he is dipped in the Well of Truth and, with his new comrades, sets off to London to rid the city of prevarication. Little do they know what they’re in for. Song gems include “The Girl with a Brogue,” “Charming Weather,” “The Pipes of Pan,” and the stirring march “All Down Piccadilly.”

We are truly grateful for your steadfast support of the Ohio Light Opera.  As we enter our 45th season, we are pleased to celebrate some of our “favorite things,” including many wonderful people: our cast, orchestra, production staff, front of house team, and—most of all—our patrons! The upcoming season will be a memorable one and we hope that you will take in as many productions as you can.

The journey of OLO from its humble beginnings in 1979 as a Gilbert and Sullivan repertory company to its current position as the nation’s leading purveyor of operetta and classic musical theater could not have been realized without the enthusiasm, encouragement, and backing of tens of thousands of fans like yourself, who share in the company’s unique history and artistic vision. The mission statement on the next page provides some insights into our accomplishments, operations, and guiding principles—please take a look.

The 2024 festival features a terrific repertoire of beloved operetta and musical theater titles. The Sound of Music, Guys & Dolls, and Me and My Girl are three engaging musicals that you should not miss.  One of our favorite Gilbert & Sullivan shows, The Gondoliers, returns with much enthusiasm after an 11-year hiatus. Both The Count of Luxembourg and The Arcadians are also making a much-anticipated return to our programming.  Please look within the pages of this brochure and on our website (www. ohiolightopera.org) for additional information about the upcoming season.

As we plan for the 2024 season and beyond, we are dedicated to maintaining both the highest production values and the continued exploration of the lyric theater repertoire. Some of the finest young instrumentalists in the country perform in The Ohio Light Opera Orchestra. In addition to accompanying all productions, they will again be featured in a special holiday event. The Company announces the 22nd annual Pops Concert, to be performed on the evening of July 4th. This is a free concert on the public square in Downtown Wooster and has become a very well-attended annual event.

OUR MISSION

Vision

As a resident professional company of The College of Wooster, the Ohio Light Opera seeks to preserve the tradition of operetta and musical theater with engaging and accessible productions that uplift, educate, and entertain a diverse present-day audience.

Mission

For 44 seasons, The Ohio Light Opera (OLO) has dedicated itself to exploring and producing the best of traditional operetta and musical theater. Although the repertoire has evolved over the past four decades, “Light Opera” in our title reflects the rich tradition of OLO’s origin. The company was founded by James Stuart as a Gilbert and Sullivan repertory summer festival and has grown to encompass all forms in the light opera canon. This includes the complete Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire and both the recognized treasures of Viennese, French, German, British, and American operetta and the rare gems of artistic value that were popular in their day but have long since been forsaken. In recent years, the company has expanded its offerings to include traditional musical theater—its forgotten musical gems and popular Broadway titles that are nevertheless being produced less often today.

The historical performance practices of each work are delicately balanced with the resources of a state-of-the-art theater, audience accessibility, and engaging performance values. A revolving repertoire season with at least six titles and over 50 performances allows patrons, throughout the summer, to attend performances of a specialized grouping of titles: three operettas or three musicals in two days, or all the titles of a summer season in four days. No other company offering a similar repertoire can provide this unique performance opportunity.

Between 15 and 20 thousand patrons each season see productions in The College of

Wooster’s intimate Freedlander Theatre. Over 100 company members from throughout the United States are selected each year to participate in our residency program. The 30 performing artists who make up the vocal ensemble are chosen for their abilities to perform and work at the highest level in all disciplines demanded by the company’s specialized repertoire: singing, acting, and dancing. The 30 members of OLO’s orchestra perform full and original orchestrations of each season’s historical titles.

The Ohio Light Opera has built and earned a reputation for producing historical titles in the spirit of fidelity and faithfulness to the original material. This commitment over 40-plus years has brought over 750,000 patrons to our festival seasons. OLO balances past artistic practices with the sensitivities expected from today’s society. Whereas the music and orchestrations remain sacred, modifications to lyrics and dialogue and elimination of blatant stereotypes are at times undertaken to mitigate prejudices prevalent at the time of a work’s creation. To completely ignore these prejudices would be the same as not acknowledging or recognizing that they existed.

With 154 titles produced, and over 2750 performances, the Ohio Light Opera has become the forerunner in promoting the lyric theater genre. The company’s contribution to the preservation and promotion of traditional lyric theater has received recognition in prominent national and international publications, and its work is frequently cited by leading scholars of operetta, light opera, and musical theater. In residency on The College of Wooster campus, the summer festival offers a country setting with an inviting community that is proud of the unique service that this company has given to its many patrons and the art form.

Tickets being exchanged must be RECEIVED in the ticket office no later than 48 hours prior to the performance date on the original tickets. Exchanges may be made in person or by mail. There is a $3.00 PER TICKET charge for exchanges. No other exchanges are possible.

Unused Tickets: Ticket holders unable to use or exchange their tickets may notify the ticket office so that those tickets can be resold. These “turnbacks” make seats available to other music lovers and can provide additional income to OLO.

Lost Tickets: If you lose your original tickets, duplicates can be made for you.

Parking Information: Parking is FREE in all College of Wooster signed lots. Spaces fill up quickly so please plan to arrive early. Visit the website for more information on parking at Freedlander Theatre, as well as directions to the theatre and any known road construction.

Air Conditioning: Freedlander Theatre is air conditioned. Some Ohio Light Opera patrons might like to bring a sweater or jacket to wear during the performance.

Decorum Reminder: Freedlander Theatre is an intimate space. Please keep in mind that talking during the overture and/or throughout the performance is distracting to fellow audience members as well as to the performing company. Also, please refrain from opening noisy candy or gum wrappers during the show. Please turn off all noise-emitting devices before entering the theater. Photography and recordings of any kind are prohibited.

Late Seating: All performances begin promptly at 2 p.m. for matinees and 7:30 p.m. for evening shows. In deference to the comfort and listening pleasure of the audience in the house, latearriving patrons will not be seated while the performance is in progress. Latecomers are asked to wait quietly until the first convenient break in the program, when ushers will assist you into the theatre. These arrangements are at the discretion of the house manager in consultation with the artistic director and performing artists. Thank you for your cooperation.

Pre-Performance Talks Friday and Saturday Evenings at 6:30 p.m.: Enhance your enjoyment of the evening’s performance by learning lesserknown facts about the show’s history and tips to recognize the unique special pleasures of each show. We feature lecturers seasoned in the experience and study of operetta. No reservations are necessary. Lectures begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and are held in the Lean Lecture Room, down the hall from Freedlander Theatre lobby. Check for signs in the lobby for the location of these informative and free gatherings!

JULY 5 – KIDS DAY The Sound of Music, 1-2 p.m. Lean Lecture Room (adjacent to Freedlander Theatre). Aye Aye Captain! Join us for The Sound of Music and get a backstage tour of the theater, meet cast members, make a captain craft and learn a song from the show!

JULY 25 – SPECIAL EVENT A special concert celebrating our 45-year history. Please contact the box office if you are interested. This concert, offered by the artists of our summer festival, features vocal selections drawn from the repertoire that has, and will continue to, define our unique mission to present both the acknowledged masterpieces and neglected gems of operetta and musical comedy.
