Double your impact, double your joy
There’s nothing like a Holiday Concert at Severance. The hall fills with friends and families. The decorations glitter. Familiar tunes ring out onstage. These concerts are only possible with support from great friends like you. And right now, you can make twice the impact for this special tradition and the music you love.
All donations to the Orchestra are being doubled by matching funds until December 31. Make twice the difference with your tax-deductible gift today.

Welcome

Dear Friends,
Season’s Greetings! On behalf of all the musicians, staff, and volunteers of The Cleveland Orchestra, welcome to Severance Music Center for our 2022 Holiday Concerts. We are delighted to share these wonderful festivities with you, whether you are joining us for the first time or participating in a longstanding family tradition.
Among the many joys of the holiday season — dazzling decorations, thoughtful gifts, and delicious meals — music, especially shared in the company of loved ones, truly touches our souls. From Handel’s Messiah, written more than 280 years ago to John Williams’s moving score to Home Alone, there’s nothing like the power of music, particularly choral music, to bring us together in celebration with our community.
This season, more than 300 musicians, including over 200 volunteer singers from the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, Blossom Festival Chorus, Wooster Chorus, and both the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus and Children’s Chorus, will grace the stage of Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Concert Hall to make our holidays in Northeast Ohio a bit brighter and a little more harmonious. These holiday concerts are infused with their stirring passion and enduring dedication to music-making. We are also grateful for the continued support of our Presenting Sponsor CIBC, without whom these concerts would not be possible.
For the third year in a row, we are also happy to offer The Cleveland Orchestra’s Holiday Delights: Visual Album on our streaming platform Adella. This exceptional selection of seasonal favorites by the Orchestra and Chorus is packed full of merriment.
From our family to yours, we wish you a tuneful holiday and a very Happy New Year!
From your vision

Completely engaged. That’s how Joe Coyle feels about his life at Judson Manor.

“Expanding my curiosity about life

is what it’s all about.”
An award-winning journalist who has lived in Paris, Santa Fe, and New York City, he arrived in July 2020 via the suggestion of a fellow resident. He’s been delighted ever since. “As a writer, I enjoy spending time alone, and these surroundings are perfect: my apartment is quiet, and the views overlooking the Cleveland Museum of Art are lovely. But by far the best part of Judson is the people. Everyone is so knowledgeable about art and culture. I wanted to have stimulating company to spend my time with, and I’ve found that here. These are wonderful, interesting people,” says Joe. Read the full story at judsonsmartliving.org/blog

Now in its second century, The Cleveland Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director Franz Welser-Möst since 2002, is one of the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world. Year after year, the ensemble exemplifies extraordinary artistic excellence, creative programming, and community engagement. The New York Times has called Cleveland “the best in America” for its virtuosity, elegance of sound, variety of color, and chamber-like musical cohesion.
Founded by Adella Prentiss Hughes, the Orchestra performed its inaugural concert in December 1918. By the middle of the century, decades of growth and sustained support had turned it into one of the most admired globally.

The past decade has seen an increasing number of young people attending concerts, bringing fresh attention to The Cleveland Orchestra’s legendary sound and committed programming. More recently, the Orchestra launched several bold digital projects, including the streaming broadcast series In Focus, the podcast On a Personal Note, and its own recording label, a new chapter in the Orchestra’s long and distinguished recording and broadcast history. Together, they have captured the Orchestra’s unique artistry and the musical achievements of the Welser-Möst and Cleveland Orchestra partnership.
The 2022–23 season marks Franz Welser-Möst’s 21st year as Music Director, a period in which The Cleveland Orchestra earned unprecedented acclaim around the world, including a series of residencies at the Musikverein in Vienna, the first of its kind by an American orchestra, and a number of acclaimed opera presentations.
Since 1918, seven music directors — Nikolai Sokoloff, Artur Rodziński, Erich Leinsdorf, George Szell, Lorin Maazel, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Franz Welser-Möst — have guided and shaped the ensemble’s growth and sound. Through concerts at home and on tour, broadcasts, and a catalog of acclaimed recordings, The Cleveland Orchestra is heard today by a growing group of fans around the world.

From the Composer
Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at Holiday time.
I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted that the magnificent Cleveland Orchestra has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie.
I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event…and I hope that tonight’s audience will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year.
WilliamsJohn Williams
Composer
In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and the concert stage. He remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He served as music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra for 14 seasons and remains its laureate conductor. He has composed numerous works for the concert stage including two symphonies and more than a dozen concertos commissioned by some of America’s most prominent orchestras. He has received five Academy Awards and 52 Oscar nominations, seven British Academy Awards, 25 Grammys, four Golden Globes, and five Emmys.
