ABOUT YOUR VISIT

Dear Friends,

Season’s Greetings! On behalf of The Cleveland Orchestra, I am delighted to welcome you to Severance Music Center for our annual Holiday Concerts. As we gather to celebrate this special season, we are filled with gratitude for your continued support and enthusiasm for the music we create.

For this year’s Holidays Concerts, we welcome back a familiar friend, conductor Sarah Hicks, and a new face, vocalist Jimmie Herrod . They join members of five choruses — The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, the Blossom Festival Chorus, The Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus, The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus, and The College of Wooster Chorus — for a program of beloved classics and newer musical selections that will surprise and delight. We’ll ask you to join us for a sing-along during the performance, and there may even be a visit from a special guest! A profound thank you to Presenting Sponsor CIBC for its generous support of these concerts.

We also hope you enjoy our other offerings this month. Sarah Hicks leads two performances of the seasonal favorite, The Muppet Christmas Carol, featuring The Cleveland Orchestra playing live alongside the film. We also welcome Canadian Brass back to Severance for the first time since 1987. Their festive programming, stellar sound, and charming wit are sure to put a smile on your face.

For eight decades, The Cleveland Orchestra has been proud to be part of our community’s holiday traditions, and we look forward to continuing that legacy with you. Whether this is your first visit to Severance or you’re returning for another memorable concert, thank you for choosing to spend part of your holiday season with us.

From all the musicians, staff, and volunteers of The Cleveland Orchestra, we wish you a happy holiday and a music-filled New Year!

Warmly,

Join us on , the digital home of The Cleveland Orchestra, for a collection of seasonal favorites, including John Adams’s El Niño and a holiday playlist, plus a new holiday special premiering on December 23. Use the code HOLIDAYS for a free 30-day trial.

Jimmie Herrod, vocals

A once-in-a-generation talent hailed for his “glorious vocals” (Broadway World ), Jimmie Herrod brings singular power and expressivity to his global career as a singer, songwriter, recording artist, and entertainer. He performs with some of the top orchestras, festivals, and venues in music ranging from Broadway and orchestral pops to jazz, soul, funk, and his own singer-songwriter originals.

Herrod rose to worldwide prominence as a finalist and “Golden Buzzer” winner on the NBC nationally broadcast television show America’s Got Talent, where judges raved about his multi-show appearances, with Howie Mandel hailing Herrod as “the best male vocalist in the history of AGT” and Heidi Klum stamping him as “a million-dollar act.”

As a solo artist, Herrod has appeared to critical and audience acclaim with the symphony orchestras of San Francisco, Houston, St. Louis, Bozeman, and Nashville. He was a featured soloist for PBS’s globally televised Joni Mitchell Songbook concert with the National Symphony Orchestra, where he shared the stage with musical luminaries like Renée Fleming, Lalah Hathaway, Raul Midón, and Aoife O’Donovan. Since 2017, he has also toured as a featured guest vocalist with world-pop band Pink Martini and appears on several recordings with the band.

This season, Herrod launches a major American solo tour with his jazz trio in support of a forthcoming full-length album titled Pretty is What

Changes, performs as a vocal soloist with top American orchestras, debuts with SFJAZZ and the Bishop Arts Theatre Center jazz series in Dallas, and continues touring with Pink Martini.

Other recent appearances include a star turn as Angel in the world premiere symphonic version of Rent at The Kennedy Center with conductor Steven Reineke, headlining the inaugural Seaside Jazz & Blues festival, co-headlining a weekend of concerts with Storm Large and the Oregon Symphony, and a new project with pianist Cédric Hanriot featuring jazz interpretations of French and American art songs, which toured to Paris, Seattle, and Nashville.

Herrod is an alum of the Cornish College of the Arts and Portland State University.

ABOUT THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA

NOW FIRMLY IN ITS SECOND

CENTURY, The Cleveland Orchestra, under the leadership of Franz Welser-Möst since 2002, is one of the most sought-after performing ensembles in the world. Year after year, the ensemble exemplifies extraordinary artistic excellence, creative programming, and community engagement. In recent years, The New York Times has called Cleveland “the best in America” for its virtuosity, elegance of sound, variety of color, and chamber-like musical cohesion.

Founded by Adella Prentiss Hughes, the Orchestra performed its inaugural concert in December 1918. By the middle of the century, decades of growth and sustained support had turned the ensemble into one of the most admired around the world.

The past decade has seen an increasing number of young people attending concerts, bringing fresh attention to The Cleveland Orchestra’s legendary sound and committed programming. More recently, the Orchestra launched several bold digital projects, including the streaming platform Adella.live and its own recording label. Together, they have captured the Orchestra’s unique artistry and the musical achievements of the Welser-Möst and Cleveland Orchestra partnership.

The 2024 – 25 season marks Franz Welser-Möst’s 23rd year as Music Director, a period in which The Cleveland Orchestra has earned unprecedented

acclaim around the world, including a series of residencies at the Musikverein in Vienna, the first of its kind by an American orchestra, and a number of celebrated opera presentations.

Since 1918, seven music directors —  Nikolai Sokoloff, Artur Rodziński, Erich Leinsdorf, George Szell, Lorin Maazel, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Franz Welser-Möst — have guided and shaped the ensemble’s growth and sound. Through concerts at home and on tour, broadcasts, and a catalog of acclaimed recordings, The Cleveland Orchestra is heard today by a growing group of fans around the world.

Synopsis

The Muppets perform Charles Dickens’s classic holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Gonzo, as Dickens, narrates the story with the help of Rizzo the Rat. The film also features Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit, Fozzie Bear as Fozziwig, and Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim. When the grumpy Scrooge receives Christmas Eve visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, they show him the error of his self-serving ways. Though the miserable old man seems beyond any hope of redemption and happiness, the kind and humble Bob Cratchit, his family, and the Spirits open Scrooge’s eyes — and his heart — to the true meaning of Christmas.

The original score was composed by Miles Goodman (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Little Shop of Horrors) with songs by Oscar®, Emmy®, and Grammy®-winning songwriter Paul Williams (“Rainbow Connection,” “Evergreen”).

With an international reputation as one of the most popular brass ensembles today, Canadian Brass has truly earned the distinction of the world’s most famous brass group.

Masters of concert presentations, Canadian Brass has developed a uniquely engaging stage presence and audience rapport. What set Canadian Brass apart in 1970 was the relentless search for repertoire that was both loved by its performers and embraced by a growing audience. Each of their concerts exhibit a full range of musical styles, from trademark Baroque and Dixieland tunes to J.S. Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Joplin, Gershwin, and Ellington to ballet, opera, and new compositions and arrangements created especially for them.

With a discography of over 135 albums, Canadian Brass has been an important pioneer in bringing brass music to audiences everywhere. They have received a combined total of 24 Grammy and Juno nominations and won the German Echo Award for Goldberg Variations. Their most recent album, Canadiana, features unique arrangements of many Canadian superstars including Joni Mitchell and Drake. Touring legends with an enthusiastic fan base, Canadian Brass plays to packed houses worldwide and were the first Western brass ensemble to perform in the People’s Republic of China as well as the first brass group to take the main stage at Carnegie Hall.

Canadian Brass has made appearances on The Tonight Show, Today, Entertainment Tonight, Evening at Pops with John Williams and the Boston Pops, Beverly Sills’s Music Around the World, numerous PBS specials — including a celebrated appearance on Sesame Street — and is a frequent guest of many major symphony orchestras.
