Choral Dances
Since the first music was created, music and dance have been constantly entwined. From chapels and courts to cinemas and clubs, this program rejoices in choral music inspired by dance. Juxtaposing Renaissance music with jazz and pop creates a rare mix of the ethereal and angelic, along with pure foot-tapping fun: a showcase for VOCES8’s inimitable stage presence.

The ensemble is a Decca Classics artist and alongside releases on its own label, VOCES8 Records, has released acclaimed recordings that have all reached the top of the classical charts; a major new album with Decca Classics, Infinity, was released in August 2021. Dedicated to supporting promising young singers, the group annually awards eight choral scholarships through the VOCES8 Scholars initiative. These scholarships are linked to the annual Milton Abbey Summer School at which amateur singers of all ages are invited to work and perform with VOCES8. Through the separate VOCES8 USA Foundation there is another set of talented Scholars. VOCES8 is proud to be working with Roxanna Panufnik as the group’s Composer-in-Residence and Jim Clements as Arranger-in-Residence. Program Notes
Inspiring generations of music lovers Leading up to tonight’s concert, the singers of VOCES8 have been working closely with students and educators at Coventry High School and The University of Akron. At The University of Akron, VOCES8’s teaching residency was supported by the School of Music’s Kulas Concert Series along with School Director Dr. Mark Reed, Manager of Special Events Patricia LaNasa, and especially Director of Choral Activities Dr. Marie Bucoy-Calavan. At Coventry High School, VOCES8 was welcomed by Director of Choirs Julie Strebler and her students. Thank you, all, for collaborating with Tuesday Musical to inspire generations of music lovers throughout our community.
The University of Akron School of Music’s Choral Program enables vocalists to participate in high-level music making, regardless of their major. The Chamber Choir is the UA School of Music’s premier auditioned choir. As the flagship and touring choral ensemble for the university, the group has been invited to perform nationally, regionally, and internationally — including with The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall and with the Madrigalchor at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theatre in Munich, Germany. The ensemble has worked with such nationally renowned conductors and composers as Robert Porco, Jerry Blackstone, Paul Rardin, and Jake Runestad. 8

The group performs a multitude of genres at a high level, ranging from Renaissance and Baroque music to contemporary compositions and spirituals. Dr. Marie Bucoy-Calavan has been Director of Choral Studies at The University of Akron since 2014, where she conducts the choirs and teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level conducting and choral literature. Dr. Bucoy-Calavan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Master of Music in Choral Conducting from California State University-Fullerton, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting and cognate in Music History from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. Coventry High School students have enjoyed working in the past with both Cantus and Chanticleer through Tuesday Musical. The school’s choral program consists of a Treble Choir, a Tenor-Bass Choir, and an auditioned a capella SATB Chamber Ensemble. The various ensembles have received superior ratings at OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Event in class AA, A, B, and C throughout the years. Coventry students have also participated in choral festivals through Kent State University and The University of Akron. Julie Strebler, who is in her 20th year at Coventry High School, leads the choral program. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Ashland University and a master’s degree in music education from Kent State University. Ms. Strebler performs in the Cleveland Chamber Choir, is an assistant director for the Cleveland Institute of Music Children’s Choir program, was a past OCDA chair for the elementary choral festival, and spent two years directing the Ashland University Women’s Choir.
