You’ve already experienced some of the changes: We’re prioritizing our collective well-being with ticket guarantees, socially distanced seating, no intermissions, no bar in the lobby, and other stringent safety protocols. Yet, the most important aspect endures: Together, we’re again sharing and celebrating our love of great live music. Clarinetist Anthony McGill and Pacifica Quartet Tuesday, May 4 Pacifica has won nearly every top award in chamber music with a reputation for luscious virtuosity and edge-of-your-seat exuberance. Anthony McGill is one of classical music’s most recognizable and brilliantly multifaceted figures. He serves as the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — that orchestra’s first African-American principal player — and maintains a dynamic international solo and chamber music career. Sphinx Wednesday, May 26 Featuring top Black and Latinx musicians from around the country, Sphinx is coming to Akron with a compelling and timely program. During the past few months, Sphinx musicians have been collaborating with students at Firestone High School on an art project and in February they participated in our free Music Careers Webinar for students and teachers throughout Ohio. Chanticleer Tuesday, July 27 Chanticleer’s seamless blend of 12 male voices shines with Renaissance to jazz, gospel to new music. If social distancing and other health protocols allow, we’ll all enjoy a reception after the concert! 3

The Artist

B
orn in modern day Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. Mr. Ax made his New York debut in the Young Concert Artists Series, and in 1974 won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. In 1975 he won the Michaels Award of Young Concert Artists, followed four years later by the Avery Fisher Prize. Highlights of the 2019/20 season included a European summer festivals tour with the Vienna Philharmonic and long-time collaborative partner Bernard Haitink, an Asian tour with the London Symphony and Sir Simon Rattle, U.S. concerts with the Rotterdam Philharmonic and Lahav Shani, in addition to three concerts with regular partners Leonidas Kavakos and Yo-Yo Ma at Carnegie Hall in March 2020. Additional recitals and orchestral appearances last spring were postponed due to Covid-19 and like many artists around the world, Mr. Ax responded to these unprecedented circumstances creatively. He hosted “The Legacy of Great Pianists,” part of the online Live with Carnegie Hall highlighting legendary pianists who have performed at Carnegie Hall. Last September, he joined cellist Yo-Yo Ma in a series 6
of surprise pop-up concerts for essential workers in multiple venues throughout the Berkshires community. With orchestra he can be heard in Houston, Baltimore, Atlanta, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Montreal and Philadelphia. In Europe he can be heard with orchestras in London, Frankfurt and Rotterdam. Mr. Ax has been a Sony Classical exclusive recording artist since 1987, his most recent being Brahms Trios with Yo-Yo Ma and Leonidas Kavakos. He has received GRAMMY® Awards for the second and third volumes of his cycle of Haydn’s piano sonatas. He has also made a series of Grammy-winning recordings with cellist Yo-Yo Ma of the Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for cello and piano. In the 2004/05 season Mr. Ax contributed to an International EMMY® AwardWinning BBC documentary commemorating the Holocaust that aired on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. In 2013, Mr. Ax’s recording Variations received the Echo Klassik Award for Solo Recording of the Year (19th Century Music/Piano). Mr. Ax is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and holds honorary doctorates of music from Skidmore College, Yale University, and Columbia University. I
n demand as both a performer and a composer, Edgar Meyer has formed a role in the music world unlike any other. Hailed by The New Yorker as “…the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument,” Mr. Meyer’s unparalleled technique and musicianship in combination with his gift for composition have brought him to the fore. His uniqueness in the field was recognized by a MacArthur Award in 2002. As a solo classical bassist, Mr. Meyer can be heard on a concerto album with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra conducted by Hugh Wolff featuring Bottesini and Meyer concertos both alone and with Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell. He has also recorded an album featuring three of Bach’s Unaccompanied Suites for Cello. Mr. Meyer was honored with his fifth GRAMMY® Award in 2015 for Best Contemporary Instrumental album for his 10
Bass & Mandolin collaboration with Chris Thile. As a composer, Mr. Meyer has carved out a remarkable and unique niche in the musical world. His music has been premiered and recorded by Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Hilary Hahn, and the Emerson String Quartet, among others. Collaborations are a central part of Mr. Meyer’s work. He has been and remains a member of numerous groups whose members include Chris Thile, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Mark O’Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Mike Marshall, and Amy Dorfman, among others. Mr. Meyer began studying bass at the age of five under the instruction of his father and continued further study with Stuart Sankey. Program Notes Suite No. 1, BWV 1007 J.S. Bach

ach’s six cello suites were written by a non-cellist — “the first non-cellist composer to give the cello its first big break as a lead actor,” writes musicologist Ann Wittstruck. Bach drew on Baroque social dances for the form of the pieces, which increase in complexity as they go. The prelude is looser, with arpeggios circling around an open bass note that gives the first half “gravitas.” As the piece shifts away to the dominant D major, then to “cloudy” diminished and minor chords, its mood shifts too; within simple harmonies play a complex of emotional tensions. Its second half wanders through an improvisatory, dissonant passage on its way back to D major. Bach’s Prelude resonates deeply in a fragmented world. It’s a piece that acknowledges dissonance and disorder even as it surrounds them with the joyful, stylized movements of social dances. Music critic Wilfrid Mellers described Bach’s cello suites as “monophonic music wherein a man has created a dance of God.” But they were not recognized by his contemporaries with such high praise. Composed “just before Bach moved to Leipzig,” leading Bach scholar Chritoph Wolff writes, “the cello suites, now musical and emotional touchstones, were little known until the 1900s. It was thought, even by some who knew

of them, that they were merely études, nothing you’d want to perform in public.” Little did they know! Enter Pablo Casals, who revived and recorded the cello suites in the early 20th century. The suites have since been performed and recorded by many renowned cellists and have been transcribed for numerous other instruments; they are considered some of Bach’s greatest musical achievements.

I
have wanted for a while to compose a piece for unaccompanied bass that is different than other pieces that I have written before. I wanted to attempt a larger form and language that is slightly more complex than I have used in shorter pieces or that I could improvise. Although I have not finished this piece, there is enough written to be able topresent a working version. This current version has opening and closing movements thatare complete for the moment. In between them there will be 1 or 2 movements yet to bewritten that may or may not include the second movement that I will use tonight, and the outer movements may end up modified somewhat in reaction to whatever happens with the middle movements or just to correct existing flaws. In the meantime, I am excited to present a “Work in Progress.” — Edgar Meyer
