She won Tuesday Musical scholarships in 2012 and 2014, and made her solo debut at Carnegie Hall this past June. A native of Moscow, soprano Dina Kuznetsova is an alumnus of The University of Akron School of Music and the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago. She won a Tuesday Musical scholarship in 1996. Since then she has attracted the attention of the world’s major opera companies for her outstanding musicianship and compelling stage presence. Kuznetsova has performed in many of the world’s greatest opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Berlin’s Staatsoper, The Bolshoi Theatre, and the San Francisco and Chicago lyric operas.

The Artists So¯ Percussion “Through a mix of consummate skill and quirky charm, this mercurial quartet has helped to ignite an explosive new enthusiasm for percussion music old and new.” – The New York Times
W
ith innovative multi-genre original productions, sensational interpretations of modern classics, and an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam,” (The New Yorker), So¯ Percussion has redefined the scope and role of the modern percussion ensemble. Their repertoire ranges from “classics” of the 20th century by John Cage, Steve Reich, and Iannis Xenakis, et al, to commissioning and advocating works by contemporary composers
such as David Lang, Steve Mackey, and Paul Lansky, to distinctively modern collaborations with artists who work outside the classical concert hall, including vocalist Shara Nova, electronic duo Matmos, the groundbreaking Dan Deacon, legendary drummer Bobby Previte, jam band kings Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Wilco’s Glenn Kotche, choreographer Shen Wei, and composer and leader of The National, Bryce Dessner, among many others. So¯ Percussion also composes and performs their own works, ranging from standard concert pieces to immersive multi-genre programs – including Imaginary City, Where (we) Live, and their newest endeavor, A Gun Show, which will be performed throughout the current season, most notably in a multi-performance presentation
Members of So¯ Percussion ERIC CHA-BEACH, a member of So¯ since 2007 • I grew up in Perry Township – the one right between Massillon and Canton (not the one where the nuclear power plant is). Go Panthers! • My dad taught philosophy and religion at Malone College when I was a kid, but he’s teaching at Walsh now. My mom worked at Aultman Hospital in the neonatal department. JOSH QUILLEN, a member of So¯ since 2006 • I grew up on the mean streets of Dover, Ohio. My mom taught French and Spanish at Strasburg High School and my dad was a salesman. I played in Joan Wenzel’s steel band at Dover High School (she is also a graduate of The University of Akron School of Music). Went to The University of Akron and studied with Dr. Larry Snider. • I rooted for the Cavs, the Browns, and the Indians my whole life, and actually had LeBron James in a class I taught at his high school. I did NOT get a Nike shoe deal. I watched the Cavs game in Scotland and cried my eyes out like a fool. • Good to be home. 10
ADAM SLIWINSKI, member of So¯ since 2001 • Bernie Kosar is my biological father. • I set the Cuyahoga River on fire personally. • My great-grandfather had a chance to invest in the zipper because he was friends with the guy from Akron who invented it. He thought it was the dumbest idea he’d ever seen. (This one is true.) • My parents live in Hudson, Ohio, where my mom directs an amazing youth choir called the Hudson Community Youth Chorus. My dad has worked for Ernst & Young for 20 years. My brother started the “superfans” club at Hudson High School. JASON TREUTING, founding member of So¯ • I grew up in Westlake Village, a suburb north of Los Angeles and a nice 11-mile hike to the beach. • I also generally cheer for the Lakers and was pulling for the Golden State Warriors this last time around. This is time for the Ohioans, I concede.

as part of BAM’s 2016 Next Wave Festival. In these concert-length programs, So¯ Percussion employs a distinctively 21st century synthesis of original music, artistic collaboration, theatrical production values and visual art, into a powerful exploration of their own unique and personal creative experiences. So¯ Percussion began the 16/17 season with critically acclaimed performances at the Lincoln Center Festival, including a complete performance of Steve Reich’s Drumming, and a sold-out trilogy of So¯ commissions and masterworks of the percussion repertoire. Other highlights of the season include an original work, From Out a Darker Sea in England’s East Durham, supported by Forma Arts; an appearance at Carnegie Hall for a celebration of Steve Reich’s 80th birthday; an appearance at the Eaux Claires Festival with Shara Nova and Buke & Gase; a return to London’s Barbican for Sound Unbound 2017; performances throughout the US, and much more. Recent highlights include a featured performance at Carnegie Hall with Glenn Kotche and Shara Nova; a collaboration with Dawn Upshaw and Gil Kalish for the season

opener of Da Camera of Houston; international tours to Poland and Ireland; performances of David Lang’s percussion concerto man made with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil; Bryce Dessner’s Music for Wood and Strings at the Barbican in London, and the Bonnaroo Music and Art Festival; and an original score for a live performance and broadcast of WNYC’s Radiolab with Jud Abumrad and Robert Krulwich at BAM. Rooted in the belief that music is an essential facet of human life, a social bond, and an effective tool in creating agency and citizenship, So¯ Percussion enthusiastically pursues a growing range of social and community outreach. Examples include their Brooklyn Bound presentations of younger composers; commitments to purchasing offsets to compensate for carbon-heavy activities such as touring travel; and leading their So¯ SI students in an annual food-packing drive, yielding up to 25,000 meals, for the Crisis Center of Mercer County through the organization EndHungerNE. Program Notes David Lang (b. 1957) man made for Percussion Quartet and Orchestra
D
avid Lang wrote of man made, composed in 2013 for So¯ Percussion and Orchestra on a commission from the Barbican Centre in London and the Los Angeles Philharmonic: “I have worked with So¯ Percussion for a very long time now and I know them really well. When I got the opportunity to write a concerto for percussion I wanted to make it specifically for them, for the things they have been concentrating on for the past few years. They are frequently theatrical, they invite found objects into their performances, they build their own instruments, etc. I wondered if I could make the unusualness of their musicality the centerpiece of this concerto, but how could an orchestra of ‘normal’ instruments doing mostly ‘normal’ things find common ground with them? “My solution was to set up a kind of ecology between the soloists and the orchestra, using the orchestral percussionists as ‘translators.’ An
idea begins with the soloists on an invented instrument, the percussionists in the orchestra hear the solo music and translate it into something that can be approximated by more traditional orchestral percussion, the rest of the orchestra hears and understands the orchestral percussion, and they join in. The opening, for example, begins with the soloists snapping twigs, which the orchestral percussionists translate into woodblocks, marimba and xylophone, which the orchestra takes up and embellishes, eventually overwhelming the soloists. “This process of finding something intricate and unique, decoding it, regularizing it, and mass producing it reminded me of how a lot of ideas in our world get invented, built and overwhelmed, so I decided to call it man made.”
It’s time for a new identity. One that tells the story of creativity in Ohio and illustrates it.
